The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said “You cannot step into the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” The river is a force to be both respected and enjoyed. McCall is the perfect basecamp to discover your own stretch of water. Explore some of our favorite ways to experience our treasured rivers this summer. Continued page 8

McCall is in a unique position being central to some of Idaho’s most wild and scenic rivers. Flowing right through town is the Payette River. Starting high in the mountains, the North Fork flows first into Payette Lake then south into Cascade Reservoir before meeting up with the South Fork in Banks. Eventually, the Payette River joins with the Snake River near the town of Payette. To the west, the 1,078-mile Snake River winds along the border of Idaho, Oregon and Washington where it empties into the Columbia River. The crown jewel of the Snake River is Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge. The terrain in Hells Canyon features dramatic changes in elevation, climate and vegetation and is set below the dramatic peaks of the Seven Devils Mountains.

To the northeast is the longest free-flowing, undammed river in the lower 48 states, the Salmon River. Also known as The River of No Return, the Salmon runs through 85 miles of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. The river is divided into three sections: the Middle Fork, the Main, and the Lower Salmon. Each is unique and attracts recreationalists. Continued page 10

With all the variation in water and terrain, rivers are always changing. “The river is at the whim of Mother Nature,” says Lauren Curtis of Salmon Raft. “Rapids are exciting all year long, they just change with each season.” Because of the variable nature of the river, we recommend working with a licensed outfitter to make the most of your experience. “The benefit to going with a guide is that they have seen the river at every flow,” says Demo. “We have extensive river logs to reference which helps ensure that there are very few surprises and that everyone stays safe on the river.”

Idaho is known as the Whitewater State and for good reason. There is certainly no shortage of rapids to satisfy thrill seekers around the McCall area. “We have the highest concentration of different rivers you can run all within an hour of McCall,” says Chris Demo of Salmon Raft. “You can find everything from meandering water all the way up to Class V water that people from all over the world come to run.” From half day trips to week long adventures, the Payette, Salmon, and Snake Rivers offer countless ways to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Get your feet wet with a single day trip. If you want to stay close to McCall, try a guided trip down the Cabarton stretch of the Payette River with Tamarack Resort’s guided service. The float starts off nice and easy before flowing into Class II and III rapids. Single day trips are also available on the Salmon River leaving from Riggins, Idaho. Mountain River Outfitters and Salmon Raft both offer half and full day trips that take you through Class I, II and III rapids with stops at pristine white sand beaches. If you are looking for a more immersive experience, a multi-day whitewater trip is your best bet. Multi-day trips range from two days to five days, but in each case, the trip is a fully catered experience. “We provide hearty river cuisine, rafting equipment, and camping accommodations including tents, sleeping pads, and freshly washed sleeping bags,” says Curtis. “We even do the dishes!” There are plenty of options for multi-day adventures. The Salmon River is divided into three sections: the Middle Fork, the Main, and the Lower. Mountain River Outfitters and Salmon Raft both offer a wide variety of trips along the Salmon. On the Snake River, Hells Canyon is the stretch of choice. Trips through Hells Canyon are available from Hells Canyon Adventures and Mountain River Outfitters. Every section takes you into some of the most untamed terrain in Idaho where you can expect to see ample wildlife, scenic canyons, untouched wilderness, and even historical artifacts from Idaho’s early inhabitants. And the best part? No cell phone service. “The best feedback we get from our guests is that they are able to connect with their families without the distractions of day-to-day life,” says Curtis.

When it comes to choosing which river trip is right for you, Brenda Baugh with Mountain River Outfitters recommends considering what you want out of your trip, how much time you have, and who will be in your party. No matter what trip you choose, we can promise it will be an experience to remember. “I love it all,” says Baugh. “There is nothing like being able to raft rivers with white sand beaches and 70 degree water temperatures in July and August.”

Pro Tip: As a general rule, most outfitters will not take kids under seven years of age on a whitewater trip. Continued page 12

There are not many things that compare to the feeling of hooking a fish. Watching your line suddenly disappear beneath the surface of the water with a quick tug is always thrilling. Pair that thrill with being in the middle of stunning scenery and it is no wonder that fishing is a hugely popular way to enjoy the river. “Even if you don’t catch a fish, you are always in an amazing place,” says Robert Monroe of Taylor Outfitting. But Monroe says the odds of not catching a fish in this area are pretty slim. And there is ample opportunity to test your luck. Early in the season, before the winter runoff raises the water level, we recommend the Payette River. In June as the water starts to come back down, Fish and Game will start stocking areas along

the North Fork of the Payette and you can expect to catch trout and bass. The easiest way to fish along this river is from the shore. Along the Salmon River, fishing by boat is the way to go. Whether by drift boat, jet boat or as part of a rafting trip, the Salmon River is teeming with opportunity. In the spring, Chinook Salmon are king. In the summer months, smallmouth bass are the fish of choice. When the weather turns cooler, steelhead fishing takes over. If hooking a monster fish is your dream, the Snake River is your best bet. White sturgeon are plentiful here and can grow to be 12 feet long, weigh up to 400 pounds and live for hundreds of years. You can also catch plenty of bass and trout in the Snake.

No matter which river you fish, the one thing you can expect is solitude. “I can count on one hand how many times I have seen another angler on the river when I am fishing,” says Monroe. “It feels like you have the water all to yourself.”

season dates, catch limits, and general rules and regulations if you strike out on your own. Those ages 14 and older will need a valid fishing license to drop a line. Additional fishing permits are required for salmon and steelhead. Visit the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for full details: idfg.idaho.gov/fish. If you are new to fishing or unfamiliar with the area, we highly recommend working with an outfitter. These experienced guides can help you hone your fishing skills and get you to amazing stretches of water. Continued page 14

Jet Boat Tours

The Salmon and Snake Rivers are impressive no matter how you choose to enjoy them, but exploring these waters by jet boat offers something truly unique. While most river activities move downstream with the flow of the river, a jet boat can go against the grain. Running up a rapid is a whole new experience. Not only that, a jet boat tour allows you to sit back and enjoy the ride, making this an accessible river adventure for everyone regardless of age or ability. Many outfitters offer short half-day trips, but if you have the time, we would highly recommend booking a full day or overnight package to really savor the experience. On the Salmon, full day tours start at Vinegar Creek near Riggins, Idaho and cover upwards of 70 miles roundtrip. Along with jetting through lots of whitewater, tours also include stops at historical sites. “I truly love the history on this river,” says Brenda Baugh of Salmon River Tours. “Being able to stop at places like the Polly Bemis Ranch and Buckskin Bills Museum makes the experience so much richer.” With so much to take in, many opt to turn a full day tour into an overnight stay. Mackay Bar Outfitters offers private rooms and cabins at the Mackay Bar Ranch. After a day on the river, they provide a home cooked meal and time to kick back and relax on the white sand beaches or in front of the fireplace in the spacious Main Lodge before resting up for the return trip home in the morning.

Salmon River Tours also offers overnight and multi-day stays at the Ram House Lodge at Mackay Bar or the China Bar Lodge. Pair a night at either lodge with a jet boat tour or fishing trip or opt to make them your primary destination for a couple’s getaway, family reunion or even a wedding! The Ram House Lodge sits on 43 acres and features three stories, five bathrooms and four fireplaces. The China Bar Lodge is comprised of four cabins and a large community hall. Both sites are completely off-grid and the China Bar Lodge was recently featured in the DIY Network’s “Building off the Grid.” On the Snake River, Hells Canyon Adventures lives up to their name. Tours run through Hells Canyon on the “Wild River Section” where the biggest rapids and deepest elevations can be found. Hells Canyon Adventures offers everything from a mellow half-day trip to a two-day tour with overnight lodging. Along the way, listen up as your guide regales you with stories from the past and points out the plentiful wildlife.

Pro Tip: Bring your camera! You will want to snap pictures 14

along the way and capture the whole experience.

For most of us, kayaking big water is not typically on our vacation bucket list. It takes a lot of skill and practice to be able to navigate whitewater in a tiny boat. However, we can’t talk about the river without paying homage to a specific 15-mile stretch of water along the North Fork of the Payette River. The section of the Payette just north of Banks, Idaho is home to the longest stretch of Class V whitewater in the country. The big water has become one of the most feared and respected sections of river and draws kayakers from all over the world who come and try to tame its rowdiness.

Kayaking

To showcase this huge water, the North Fork Championship brings together the most talented kayakers in the world for an extreme kayak race each June. This is not a weekend warrior event. Athletes who compete in this three day event are experts and put on a show anyone can appreciate. We highly recommend putting this event on your itinerary to take in some of the best kayaking in the world. The event includes three races: the Expert Division, Boater X, and the Elite Division. The Expert Division kicks off the North Fork Championship and is a one-mile sprint through the whitewater. This race also serves as a time trial for the AWP World Series. The next day, athletes compete in Boater X where heats of six kayakers race through the “S-Turn” rapid. The final race is set up like a giant slalom comprised of seven gates through the “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Golf Course” Class V rapids. This Elite Division race is timed with a five second penalty given to a racer each time they hit a gate. Photo courtesy North Fork Championship

For spectators, there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. The entire event takes place along Highway 55 just north of Banks, Idaho. Ample signage will let you know as you get close to the event zone near milepost 86. Parking is limited to availability along the Highway, so be prepared to go slow for pedestrian traffic and be patient until you find a safe space to park. To find your perfect vantage point for the events, walk along the banks of the river with the rest of the crowd. Continued page 16 Photo courtesy Eric Parker

Pro Tip: The river bank can be slippery so make sure to wear shoes

you can hike and be comfortable climbing in. Bring extra sunscreen and pack plenty of water and snacks. There are some food vendors available, but most won’t be accepting credit cards—cash is king! For full event details, visit northforkchampionship.com.

Easy Access

Sometimes, a whole day or overnight adventure on the river isn’t feasible. Luckily, there are several places to easily access the rivers near McCall for a quick dip or afternoon adventure. Kelly’s Whitewater Park in Cascade is free for kayakers, tubers, rafters, stand-up paddle boarders and canoeists of all ages to enjoy. The pristine whitewater park has five in-water features that provide a thrill from beginner to advanced paddlers. Practice your skills in the water or simply watch the action from the 2.5-mile walking trail along the river, “The Stand.” The park is also home to a large visitor’s center, volleyball and bocce ball courts, and horseshoe pits. All this adds up to an easily-accessible place to enjoy family fun along the river. If a slow paddle is more your speed, the Upper North Fork of the Payette River is an ideal place to experience the serenity of the river. This meandering stretch of water flows into Payette Lake near North Beach and is ideal for an afternoon canoe, flatwater kayak or stand up paddle board session. The water is crystal clear so you can see schools of fish dart beneath you along the way. Wildlife is abundant and there is a good chance you will see deer, eagles, fox and even the occasional moose along the bank.

There is a softer side to the river that we don’t always acknowledge. “There are many things that draw people to the river, but it usually comes back to the flow,” says Elizabeth Price of Yoga Inbody. “The river is always moving, but is never in a rush.” This is particularly refreshing in the fast-paced world we live in. The river gives us a chance to rest and digest and connect with those around us. Price has spent her life chasing rivers. Having rafted more than 10,000 river miles around the world, she kept coming home to Idaho because of how clean and pristine the water is. “I guess you could say the river taught me how to live life with a higher purpose, to live life based on my core values,” she says. And now she is working to share her experiences with others by combining yoga, meditation and reiki practice with the river. “Watching the river has the same effects as meditating,” Price says. To take advantage of these parallels, Yoga Inbody has created unique yoga vacations for all abilities. One option is an all-inclusive four day rafting trip on the Salmon River that begins with sunrise meditation and yoga class before heading out each morning. Price also hosts private yoga retreats at the Inbody Hideaway in Riggins, Idaho. This riverfront home has all the amenities of a top notch hotel with a river deck ideal for sipping coffee and practicing yoga.

Big Theater in Little McCall

The Seven Devils Playwrights Conference 2018 Dates: June 4-16 By Lindsey Harris id Theater and Seven Devils have been bringing professional plays to McCall for 18 years. Every June, playwrights, actors, and directors, both amateur and professional, descend on McCall from all over the country. What exactly is the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference? Seven Devils is a unique theatrical experience that allows national and local playwrights to submit their work, see their plays presented, and then get feedback from a live audience. Though it looks a lot like any other theater performance, actors do not memorize their lines, but instead read from scripts. At the end of a play, audience members are encouraged to participate in the process by offering their feedback. The company calls this risk-free dialogue “talkbacks.” The “talkbacks” provide vital information that helps the playwright refine their play. “In the beginning years, before people understood how important the conversation is for the playwright’s process, they left before the talkbacks,” said Producing Artistic Director Jeni Mahoney. “Now, even if people are confused by a play or the story it tells, they stay to be a part of the conversation.” Every event is FREE and no part of the conference is off-limits. From rehearsals during the day, to the live performances at night, the public can attend. If someone is feeling extra brave, they can partake in an “Insta-Play.” The “InstaPlay” is an event that invites anyone, from those with zero theater experience to professionals, to construct short plays together and then perform them. Side note, this creation process all happens in a matter of 90-minutes- what a rush!

26

Immerse Yourself in the Creative Process with the Seven Devils Playwrights Conference idtheater.org | idtheater.org/seven-devils.html

To describe the overarching feel of Seven Devils, Mahoney says “We create a company that has everything in it from youth to award-winning playwrights, amateur, to emerging, to professional, because we all make each other better. Audience engagement is a large component of that process.” The youth Mahoney refers to are local high school drama students who participate as playwrights, actors or stage hands. McCall native Ben Verschoor was one of the local playwrights featured in 2004 and is now pursuing a career in dramatic writing. When asked what impact Seven Devils had, he says “I don’t know where I would be without id Theater and the Seven Devils. They have supported me every step of the way.” Ben was selected as The Dramatist Magazine list of 50-to-Watch and is currently completing an MFA Writing for Screen and Stage program at Northwestern University in Chicago. The conference attracts an influx of creatives from all over, who otherwise wouldn’t likely come to rural Idaho. The stunning region and its community often surprises people. “These creatives could be coming all the way from Broadway in New York City or fresh off a sitcom set in L.A. It is a melting pot of people and what makes Seven Devils so unique” Mahoney explains. This is a win-win: locals get to see professional theater and the participants get to experience true McCall by exploring Burgdorf Hot Springs, touring Payette Lake with McCall Lake Cruises, or even blowing-up local Karaoke night at Forester’s Saloon.

Insider Tip: for true entertainment, attend Thursday night Karaoke at

Forester’s Saloon during the Playwrights Conference. You will not be disappointed you went out on a “school night” for this one. Or head on over to Bistro 45 after the plays conclude in the evening for the official “unofficial” after party spot for the cast and crew!

SIP & Breakfast doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. When the lure of a perfect summer day calls, it is easy to opt for a grab-andgo option on your way out the door. We know that adventure beckons, but a warm summer morning is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy a savory meal. We asked two of our favorite brunch stops to share their signature breakfast recipes.

Tradition UNLIKE ANY OTHER

The McCall Amateur By Michael Hayes

There is a magical week that takes place every summer in McCall. A week where khaki shorts and polo shirts can been seen in every restaurant, every hotel, and every store. It is McCall Amateur week. Much like the hype of Masters Week for the PGA, the McCall Amateur holds a special place in the heart of our community. Since 1934, golfers have gathered in our little slice of heaven to compete. This isn’t just a golf tournament. The McCall Amateur is one of the most unique weeks of golf found in Idaho. Photo courtesy McCall Golf Course

The tournament is comprised of three separate competitions, junior, women, and men, and is held at the McCall Golf Club. The McCall Golf Club is an idyllic 27-hole course set close into town. It’s an easy walk and has challenges to match the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Wildlife is abundant, conditions are always good, and the course boasts a vibrant golf culture. The McCall Amateur draws close to 600 men, women, boys, and girls, ages 5 to 85, to the community to bask in the perfect weather while testing their mettle on the course.

The tournament is a lot of fun, but it is also very challenging. I know from personal experience. For the past three years I have had the privilege to play in the Men’s Tournament. The field of competition is wide and deep, and invitations to play at the McCall Amateur are coveted. For me, it took seven years of writing letters to the tournament committee expressing my interest in participating as a competitor. Each year I would play a round of golf in the morning before the tournament teed off just to be Continued page 34

available if a competitor dropped out. Then the magical day came. Three years ago, while playing the 8th hole of the Birch course, McCall Golf Club’s head Professional drove up to my group with a smile on his face. I was in! While I am now on the course as a player for part of the tournament, I have also spent many years as a spectator. The McCall Amateur is a great opportunity for the whole family to get out on the course and see some truly spectacular golf. With a full week of events and competition, read on for a few tips on how to make the most out of your McCall Amateur experience.

Junior and Women’s Amateur Amateur week kicks off with two tournaments on Monday and Tuesday. The women take to the golf course in the mornings and play a 36-hole stroke play event. Some of the finest collegiate players from around the northwest highlight the Women’s tournament. The afternoons turn into a fun-filled frolic when the Junior Tournament is held. Boys and girls ages 5 to 18 participate in this contest. The youngest play three holes per day while both 18 and 36-hole competitions are offered for older juniors.

Men’s Amateur It all starts with a big Calcutta on Wednesday evening. A Calcutta is where you can bet on a group of golfers to win their respective flights. A portion of the money raised supports local junior golf, so be generous! Thursday is full of anticipation. Roles are reversed, families are now watching their husbands and fathers compete. The Men’s tournament is match play. Head to head battles, no strokes given, whoever wins the most holes prevails. A field of 352 men are divided into 16 player brackets of similar skilled golfers (32 players compete in the Championship flight). Think March Madness on the links.

The Experience McCall Amateur week is a family affair. Back in the day, Marie Strode, the matriarch of the Spalding family, would play on Monday and Tuesday, as would her great grandson Nick Spalding. Her son, Will, and grandson, Mark, played in the Men’s Amateur on the weekend. Where else in the world can four generations of golfers compete on the same course during the same week? Only in McCall! Many like myself, spend the afternoons watching one sibling play, while waiting on a text message to find out how their brother or sister is fairing on the opposite side of the golf course. Another aspect that makes the McCall Amateur unique are the people. Every group on the golf course has a gallery following play, and it can get a little crazy at times! Both the Aspen and Birch courses come together and share the 8th tee. Two adjacent greens and a refreshment stand make this a central hub of activity, sometimes with over a hundred spectators and dozens of competitor’s present. To really get a sense of how vibrant a golf community we have here in McCall, just come walk the tournament!

Viewing Tips If you have never watched a golf tournament in person, this is the perfect tournament to start! Brush up on golf spectator etiquette and consider these few tips to make the most of your viewing experience. • On the course: Cheering on your favorite golfers and showing appreciation for a great shot are highly encouraged, just not as a golfer is making a shot. The general rule is to remain quiet and stand still (yes, stop walking if you come upon a competitor lining up their next shot). • Never touch a ball! This may seem like common sense, but it can be hard to resist if you are in the gallery and a player’s golf ball comes close. • Dress code: While the McCall Golf Club does not have a strict dress code, we recommend dressing the part. The general rule is no jeans. Opt for shorts, slacks or a skirt for women. While July in McCall is typically warm, always bring a few layers to keep you comfortable throughout the day. A light rain jacket you can stash in a bag is also a good idea! • Viewing: Family and friends will typically walk with a group the entire course, but if you are there to take it all in, we recommend stationing yourself at a particular hole to see all of the competitors come through. • Food and Drinks: Please refrain from bringing your own food and drinks to the tournament. The McCall Golf Club has a fabulous restaurant where you can get items to go and also has a great snack shack near the 8th tee of Aspen and Birch. Continued page 36

For both destinations, the trail starts with a small bridge that crosses a creek and places you into a stunning wildflower meadow. If you have dogs with you, please keep them on leash or under control as cattle are often grazing here in the summer months. Past the meadow, you will come to another creek crossing. Hopscotch across the rocks or opt to traverse one of the large downed trees across the creek to make your crossing. From here, the trail takes a slow meander upward. At .5 miles, you will come to a signed junction. Stay right to keep course to Twin Lakes or take the left fork to access Granite Mountain Lookout.

If you choose to visit Twin Lakes, the destination will be another half mile from the signed junction. The well-marked trail summits just as the lake comes into view. Although named Twin Lakes, it is actually one large body of water formed in a figure eight shape. When the water level drops in the fall, the lake looks more like two, hence the name. The lake is set against the north face of Granite Mountain, an impressive 8,479-foot peak. Follow one of the footpaths that circle the lake to find campsites or a nice picnic spot. At the far west end of the lake, a creek splashes over granite slabs and into the lake. This also makes a great place to drop a line and see if the fish are biting. For those opting to take the Granite Mountain Lookout trail, the route will take you through a section of recovering forest. Burned trees loom large against a backdrop of wildflowers. The grade is fairly gradual until about 1.5 miles in. From here, the forest drops away and you will come to a grassy saddle. A cairn marks the place where you can take a short side trip by walking north to enjoy a stunning view of Twin Lakes. Back on the main trail, the ascent moves steeply up rocky terrain. Keep an eye out for cairns that mark the way over areas of granite slabs. Another mile will bring you to the summit of Granite Mountain. If you decide to explore the Lookout, keep in mind this is an active fire lookout and announce yourself as you arrive.

WELCOME TO BEAUTIFUL PAYETTE LAKE!

Jim Warren discovered gold in the 1860’s in what would eventually became known as Warren, Idaho. During the gold boom Warren was one of the largest settlements in the Idaho Territory and was even considered to be the Territory Capital at one time. In those days a wagon trail and pack string trail headed north along the west side of Payette Lake moving supplies to the gold mines and outlying areas. That trail became what we know today as Warren Wagon Road. With ever increasing demands for lumber and mining supplies in the back country the lake route offered larger weight haul and shorter haul time. THE LYDA was one of the early work boats powered by steam transporting from what was known as Lake Port, now McCall, to the north end of Payette Lake, reloading here on wagons and pack strings to head for the gold bearing mines farther north.

THE LYDA would haul passengers along the route for site seeing to help cover the cost of operations. Life was thriving in the area. THE LYDA could be seen hauling passengers and towing a "dancing barge" for local events. After THE LYDA retired a new vessel, the 60' WINSTON was built to replace her. The WINSTON took over the haul route until the demand of freight hauling shifted to more economical motorized means. For many years after the initial mining boom, Brown Tie & Lumber Company used the lake as a means of transporting and storing logs for their lake-front sawmill, formerly located where you’ll find “Mill Park.” In 2012 THE IDAHO started cruising on beautiful Payette Lake offering luxury cruising with a heated interior, restrooms, full beverage and snack bar and an open upper deck area. Today McCall Lake Cruises offers a variety of public and private cruises on beautiful Payette Lake: PUBLIC SCENIC CRUISES: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday. 90 minutes in length covering the main part of Payette Lake. See McCall like you’ve never seen it before. Hear about local history and points of interest during your cruise. Kids, keep an eye out for “Sharlie” our lake monster. 2 HOUR EVENING SUNSET CRUISES: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday. Watch the sunset on a relaxing cruise with your favorite beverage in hand. As the sun sets so does the temperature. Please bring a jacket. Thursday nights are adults only with live piano music on board. THE IDAHO is also available for private events tailored to your special occasion such as a Wedding Ceremony, Rehearsal Dinner, Reunion, Birthday or a Company Outing. We work with local caters offering a variety of menu items. THE IDAHO is docked lake-side behind the Yacht Club Building at 203 East Lake Street, downtown McCall. Reservations online @ McCallLakeCruises.com, or contact us @ 208-634-LAKE(5253) or info@McCallLakeCruises.com While visiting McCall check our local Chamber of Commerce.

Trailhead Directions: From downtown McCall,

head north on Highway 55 and turn right on Goose Lake Road. Stay left as you come to Brundage Mountain Resort. The road will turn to dirt. When you come to the Y junction, keep left toward Hazard Lake on Forest Service road 247. Travel approximately seven miles until you see the sign for “Granite Mountain/Twin Lakes Trailhead on your left. There is a large parking area at the trailhead, but no restroom facilities.

Slice of Life:

Managing Forests for Future Generations By McKenzie Kraemer This past September, McCall’s G. Ikola Inc. Logging Company was named the 2017 Logging Business of the Year by Timber Harvesting Magazine. “It was a big surprise to us,” says President Gerry Ikola. “We had no idea anything like this was in the works.” According to Timber Harvesting Magazine, the Ikola Logging Company was chosen for their “long-term performance, exemplary integrity and outreach efforts.” This praise extends to the entire Ikola team, a third generation family business. George Ikola, Gerry’s father, grew up in McCall and worked at the saw mill. “The mill was such a central part of McCall and a lot of people got their start there,” says Gerry. In 1947, George had an opportunity to go into business for himself, starting G. Ikola Inc. Gerry took over management of the company in the 1970s with his wife Capella and today, their three children, Erika, Gerry Jr., and Gabe, play integral roles in the operation. Erika has taken on more of the bookkeeping and business management work, although she is no stranger to working in the woods alongside her father and brothers. Gerry Jr. runs the cable skidding crew as an experienced equipment operator. Gabe also holds a variety of positions, now focusing on running the grinder crew. “As a parent, I am so proud that they all get along so well,” says Capella. “That is not always the case and it is really special that they have a mutual respect for one another and always try to understand things from each other’s perspectives.” Mutual respect is a concept that has many applications for the Ikola family. As a logging contractor, one of the biggest challenges they face is public perception. “Many people aren’t familiar with how our business works,” says Erika. “As a contractor, we don’t just decide to go into the woods and cut down any tree we want.” Instead, the method of forest management is chosen by land managers, down to the exact trees selected for harvest, and then contractors like Ikola are hired to carry out the harvest plan.

A big part of Ikola’s business is working with land managers like the Payette National Forest to actively manage forests through selective harvest. The goal of this type of logging operation is to thin forests to help prevent catastrophic forest fires. At the same time, this also creates recreation access points for the public. “If you were to take someone to a forest that had never been logged and then to one that had been logged and ask them which area they would rather recreate in, very few would choose the untouched forest,” says Capella. “You just can’t get into it.” In addition to their typical contracts, Ikola Logging has also been very involved in several projects that directly benefit recreationalists in the area. Ikola was the contractor who cleared the area for the ski lifts at Tamarack Resort and is also actively working with the Forest Service to thin the area around Bear Basin for fire mitigation. “Stewardship contracts are starting to involve a lot more than logging,” says Erika. “Many contracts also include hand pruning and piling brush to make areas look like a park. We have also done everything from installing signage and gates to concrete outhouses in recreational areas.” As part of the changing landscape of the logging industry, Ikola has been working hard to recognize new methods and integrate them to improve operations in an environmentally sensitive manner. “One of the biggest resources we are always working to protect is water,” says Gerry. To do this, Ikola uses a machine unique to Central Idaho. Crews will go into an area on foot to fall a tree. Once the trees are down, Ikola then uses a Cat with a tong-throwing attachment to collect the timber. “This allows us to stay a safe distance away from creeks and other water sources as well as ensure that there are no tracks or trails left behind,” says Gerry.

% 80 Another new addition to the Ikola arsenal is a grinding machine. In the past, slash piles from logging operations were burned each fall. “Our grinding machine turns slash into Continued page 52

Of Idahoans believe mining can be done in an environmentally responsible manner.

wood chips that are then hauled to the mill,” says Capella. “This reduces the need to burn and means a lot less wood smoke in the air which reduces the carbon footprint.” The modernization of the timber industry also means that technology plays a large role in forest management. “It may surprise people to know that just about every acre of forest you see driving through the valley has been harvested not once, but twice in a lot of cases,” says Gerry. “There are now sophisticated computer modeling applications that enable us to make accurate predictions on what we can safely harvest to sustain a forest indefinitely.” This type of sustainable management means that there are now more trees growing in the forests surrounding McCall than there were 70 years ago.

“McCall is probably one of the most diverse areas in Idaho,” says Gerry. The combination of high mountain lakes, scenery, ski mountains and recreational opportunities attract a lot of visitors on the tourism side. However, the area also has strong industry with farming, ranching, mining, logging and sawmilling. “I have always thought that is our strength as a community.” And that strength continues to grow. Ikola employs between 20 and 100 people depending on demand who call the McCall area home.

Unique Winter Lodging When the snow starts to fall, these unique lodging options get you out of town and into some beautiful scenery. Cozy up in these rustic retreats that make a perfect basecamp for your winter adventures.

Lake Cascade State Park If you need to accommodate a crowd, look no further than the Osprey Point Group Yurt Camp at Lake Cascade State Park. Three large yurts can house up to 30 guests and come equipped with a wood stove, dining and cook tables, chairs, lanterns, a cook stove and bunks. Potable drinking water is also available on site. Tell stories and roast marshmallows at the group fire ring or explore the area on snowshoes. Gold Fork Host Springs also makes a great day trip for the group! The yurts are accessible by car. To book, visit parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/lake-cascade.

Jug Mountain Ranch Alpine Cabin Set on the shoreline of the Upper Jug Reservoir, the Alpine Cabin is a converted shipping container that offers a unique lodging experience. Accessible only by snowshoe, fat bike or Nordic skis,

78

PARTING SHOT the cabin is a great option for those seeking solitude. Amenities include a wood stove, lighting, gas cook stove, cookware, dishes, utensils, water, furniture and sleeping bunks. Guests will need to pack in sleeping bags, clothing and food or arrange for Jug Mountain Ranch staff to bring these supplies in. The cabin makes a perfect basecamp to explore the large network of winter trails right outside the front door. To book, please visit jugmountainranch.com/alpine-cabin.

Lick Creek Summit Yurts Located on Lick Creek Summit (elevation 6930’) and operated by Payette Powder Guides, these two yurts provide instant access to more than 30,000 acres of untracked powder just waiting for you to explore. Complete with a wood stove, sauna and outhouse, the yurts can be booked as part of a full service guided trip or as a self-catered rental. For those looking to rent the yurts independently, keep in mind that a “trip leader” must be designated and have Level I Avalanche Safety training. The yurts are open early December and operate through April. To book, please visit payettepowderguides.com.
