9 of Our Favorite Ski Area Experiences in McCall
6
Photo taken by John J. Webster at Brundage Mountain Resort
The McCall area has always been a haven for snow seekers. From ski jumping competitions held at Blackwell Ranch in the 1920s to the development of three ski areas—the Little Ski Hill in 1937, Brundage Mountain Resort in 1961 and Tamarack Resort in 2004—a love of winter sports has always been at the heart of the McCall community. Having so many winter playgrounds to choose from means that there is a perfect place to find whatever terrain is beckoning. We rounded up our favorite experiences at the Little Ski Hill, Brundage Mountain Resort and Tamarack Resort to celebrate the big offerings of this little ski town. Continued page 8 7

Best Family Ski Experience
BEARTOPIA at Brundage Mountain four mid-length beginner runs, two freestyle runs with terrain park features and a sampling of intermediate/advanced runs. Beartopia even has its own eatery. The Bear’s Den is open Fridays through Sundays and holidays and features hearty fare like meatball sandwiches, chicken and waffles and mac and cheese. Bear Chair lift tickets are less than half the price of a full-mountain ticket, so not only is this learning environment ideal, it is also incredibly affordable.
Best Way to Catch Some Air
Little Ski Hill’s Outback Terrain Park
If big air is on your bucket list, the Little Ski Hill’s Outback Terrain Park is the place to go. Close to one-third of the ski area is devoted to this park’s table top jumps, spines, volcanoes and rails. Features are constantly changing to give you an exciting ride from top to bottom. A fleet of more than 20 rails is mixed into those changing lines and creates a second rail garden at the base of the mountain so there is always something new to explore. On top of all this, the Little Ski Hill puts its terrain park on display every year with a number of free ride events including Rail Jams, Slopestyles, Big Airs and, the local favorite, Banked Slalom. For families just starting out on their alpine adventures, the Beartopia Fun Zone at Brundage Mountain can’t be beat. Newbies start on the gentle terrain surrounding the Easy Rider Conveyor, then step up to the Easy Street Triple Chair which allows them to practice skills and build confidence on any of five short beginner runs. The best part? Both the Easy Rider Conveyor and the Easy Street Triple Chair are absolutely free. Once a skier or boarder can stop and turn consistently, the next step is the Bear Chair. This opens up a world of adventure on 100 acres of terrain featuring
Best Top-to-Bottom Run
Bliss at Tamarack Resort If you’re a fan of the lactic acid burn and jaw-dropping view corridors, Bliss is your run. Technically separated into Upper Bliss and Lower Bliss, when combined together it is one of the longest runs at Tamarack—clocking in at just under 2 miles with more than 2200 feet of vertical. The undulating run also provides plenty of spots to take a breather and enjoy views over snowcovered Lake Cascade and the valley floor. Continued page 12

Best Place to Ski Under the Stars
Little Ski Hill
When the sun goes down, the skiing heats up. There is something special about hitting the slopes under the stars. A quiet settles in, the temperature drops and the same runs you took during the day take on a whole new look. The Little Ski Hill is McCall’s only area for night skiing (and the third oldest ski area in Idaho!) and the experience is one you won’t forget. Jump on the T-bar for a lift to the top then head down one of the trails lit with floodlights. At the bottom, warm up in the Lodge with a bite and a beer. Night skiing is open until 8pm Tuesday through Thursday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday.
Best Place to Ski Powder for the First Time
Front Side of Brundage Mountain

or
t
By now, you’ve ripped down some of the ridiculously wide top to bottom groomers. You think you’re ready to try the powder, but what’s the best approach? This is where the front side of Brundage Mountain truly shines. Off to the side of any of the main groomed runs—North, Main Street, Alpine, Engen, 45th Parallel—you’ll find a generous swath of ungroomed snow. Frequent storms refresh Brundage Mountain with some of the softest, most forgiving snow you’ll R in find anywhere in the Northwest. Fresh snow and easy access make it a ta n ou M breeze to ‘dip in’ for a few low-angle powder turns to work on your e ag und r B technique—without getting committed to a path with no easy exit. While expert es y our t Photo c powder skiers swear by ‘the trees’, there are plenty of open slopes that appeal to those still building their off-piste confidence. And if you’re worried your gear won’t keep up with your ambitions, look no further than the Fall Line Shop. Demo packages with ‘unlimited switchouts’ are available and affordable, so you can push yourself in the powder in the morning and finish the day carving up the groomed runs with the perfect set of boards to fit either adventure. “The Grove” at Tamarack Resort When you look up at West Mountain in the fall from Highway 55, it’s hard to miss Tamarack Resort’s namesake. On the resort’s northern edge grows a large grove of Western Larch, also known as tamaracks, which turn a brilliant gold as temperatures drop. As one of the few deciduous conifers, the tamaracks then drop their needles and leave behind a glade of pines with striking view lines for skiers and riders. With no pine needles to obscure your view, stellar visibility creates better lines for tree skiing. No pine boughs mean little to no tree wells. When crowds tear up the powder elsewhere on the mountain, the gladed terrain off Wildwood holds on longer for the ultimate tree skiing experience. Continued page 16

Brundage Mountain’s Lakeview Bowl
By the time you reach the 7,640 foot summit at the top of the BlueBird Express, you’ll already be overwhelmed with nearly 360-degrees of stunning Rocky Mountain views. But frequent visitors to Brundage Mountain know there’s another special spot where the beauty of the surrounding mountains and lakes can knock you out of your ski boots. Head South from the summit toward the Lakeview Bowl and you’ll be greeted by an army of “Snow Ghosts” – pine and fir trees dressed in a uniform of pure white. Take some leisurely turns down the pristine Kickback corduroy or a more direct shot down Dropline and watch the gorgeous Payette Lake, McCall and Long Valley landscapes unfold right in front of your eyes. The trip back up the Lakeview Triple is equally as satisfying. This nearly untouched playground looks like a real-life snow globe each time storms dish up a new serving of the Best Snow in Idaho™ and is definitely worthy of a photo op stop.
Tamarack Resort Grabbing first tracks or that mid-afternoon pick-me-up comes a bit easier at Tamarack thanks to the state’s largest offering of ski-in ski-out lodging. And the options for staying slopeside will increase exponentially this winter with the opening of the first phase of The Village at Tamarack with studio to 3-bedroom condominiums. Whether you’re looking for a hotel room, cottage, chalet, townhome or estate home large enough for a family retreat—the resort has options to fit all shapes and sizes of winter getaways. With Village amenities just a stroll, skate or slide away—apres lasts just a bit longer at the resort’s slopeside bars and restaurants. Continued page 18 16

Best Way to Mix It Up
Nordic Lessons at Bear Basin The Little Ski Hill is steeped in McCall ski heritage. When the area originally opened in 1937, ski jumping and cross-country trails were the main attractions. It wasn’t until later that the alpine runs we know today were built. While a run through the Outback Terrain Park is a great way to pay homage to the ski jumping history of the hill, the Nordic trails at Bear Basin, part of the Payette Lakes Club that includes the Nordic area and the Little Ski Hill, offer a traditional way to get out and enjoy the snow. If you haven’t ever swapped your alpine skis for cross-country ones, Bear Basin has you covered. Saturdays in the winter are the perfect time to mix it up and try your hand on the Nordic trails. Group lessons for beginner to intermediate skiers run each Saturday with an 11am session for classic skiing and a 1pm session for skate skiing. If you drop in for instruction, plan to bring your own equipment (several retailers in town offer rental packages). Each session costs $25, is open to all ages and abilities, and includes one hour of instruction along with a day pass to Bear Basin so you can practice your new skills. Private lessons are also offered by reservation.

Relax, Refresh and Feel Restored in McCall By McKenzie Kraemer The term “wellness” has become a buzzword. There are thousands of books, websites, podcasts, television programs and products dedicated to helping people integrate wellness into their lives. But what does that really mean? “Wellness is a kind of equilibrium,” says Renee Silvus, a Whole Health Educator, massage therapist, yoga instructor and the energy behind Luminaire coaching. “Wellness is having life balance, a solid sense of yourself from a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual perspective.” Physical wellness involves movement, exercise and nutrition; emotional wellness thrives on building relationships; mental wellbeing is about keeping your mind alive with reading, studying and learning; spiritual wellness gives purpose and meaning to life. In addition to these core areas, there is a fifth…shadow work. “Shadow work is really interesting because it focuses on your blind spots,” says Silvus, “trying to identify those things that you are not aware of.” 22
In the field of wellness, Silvus says that there is a lovely sense of collaboration, not competition, especially in the McCall area. “Our job as the people behind the door is to support you on your journey.” This sense of collaboration paired with area amenities makes McCall uniquely situated to help you find your door.
The landscape itself, with miles of trails to explore and access to endless recreation, provides ample opportunity to feed your wellness with fresh air. Gathering places like the Manchester Ice Center, local coffee shops and the Brundage Mountain parking lot offer easy places to meet and mingle and join in the culture of community. Our area non-profits provide programming and events to bring people together, teach new skills and support a meaningful cause. to cou r

In the world of to-do lists, deadlines and packed schedules, it can seem a bit daunting to make room for dedicated self-care in all of these areas. The good news? It is easier than you might think! “You just have to find the door you are willing to walk through,” says Silvus, “that one entry point to start you on a restorative path.” The key, says Silvus, is to find the thing that speaks to you and do it first every day. “If you save your self-care for later in the day,” she says, “it will get hijacked.”
And when it comes to meeting your edge, that uncomfortable place that can help you identify your shadow areas, there is no shortage of opportunity. “The edge is where growth is,” says Silvus. Learning a new sport or skill, joining a group that puts you out of your comfort zone or challenges your norms, or even listening to and accepting the differences among people at a gathering place can be an edge point for growth. With all of these options for adding purposeful self-care to your life, perhaps the easiest door to walk through is a visit to a spa. “People tend to think of a spa treatment as an indulgence, a treat,” says Silvus. “The reality is that a massage or a facial or a pedicure gives you time to plug back into yourself and get restored.” So take that first step. Make the appointment. Walk through the door and find your equilibrium with a customized experience at one of our local wellness providers. Continued page 24 23
If you are seeking a truly unique experience in McCall, look no further than Alpenglow Salt Spa. Their services include on-trend treatments like sound bowl therapy, Thai yoga massage and CBD oil-infused treatments, as well as traditional Swedish and deep tissue massages and essential oil applications. But the cornerstone of Alpenglow is salt. This isn’t regular old table salt. Alpenglow specializes in Pink Himalayan, Hawaiian Red and Black Charcoal salts. These salt compounds have highly concentrated, naturally occurring minerals and elements that aid in health and healing by pulling toxins from your skin. When combined with massage, which helps detoxify the body by stimulating the circulatory and lymph systems, a salt treatment elevates your spa experience and leaves you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. We love the Himalayan Salt Stone Massage and Scrub to get the full experience with this amazing compound. And you can even take it home with you. Alpenglow offers a unique “Scrub and Glow” salt bar where you can mix your own signature salt blend. On top of that, they also carry one-of-akind products like matcha green tea body butter, charcoal mint soap, sandalwood and lavender beard oil (for you gents out there!), candles in scents like “Coconut Bourbon” and “Merlot” and a full line of CBD infused products to carry on the therapy at home. Oh, and they give amazing hugs. Sometimes, that is just what the doctor ordered. Continued page 26

Some of the most sought-after treatments include dermaplane, microneedling, their signature European facial and spray tanning. Dermaplaning is by far the most requested service at Mountain Renewal. This chemical-free exfoliation scrapes away dead skin cells and peach fuzz facial hair to leave skin ultra-smooth, fresh and glowing. Microneedling is a minimally invasive collagen induction therapy. Often confused with dermarolling, microneedling uses a dermapen to help stimulate the skin’s collagen and elastin production. This procedure can help with a wide spectrum of skincare issues including acne scarring, wrinkles and skin discoloration.
Mountain Renewal’s European facial goes above and beyond. This experience is fully customized to your specific skincare concerns and begins with a four-step deep pore cleansing system to ensure subsequent skincare products will be properly absorbed. Following the deep cleanse, the facial includes an exfoliating mask, hydrating anti-aging mask and ending with an anti-inflammatory, SPF moisturizer. Each facial also includes eye and lip care plus a face, arm, hand, neck and shoulder massage. Yes please! For sun-seekers wanting a mid-winter glow, Mountain Renewal also offers spray tanning in two colors: Tahitian, a medium golden bronze and Lava, with a deeper red undertone. And for those wanting an at-home skincare routine to maintain a fresh glow, pick up everything you need with Image Skincare products. Best-sellers include the daily tinted moisturizer with SPF 30, Vital C anti-aging serum, bio molecular Masques and the plum Brightening Powder.

This cozy hideaway is equal parts style and skincare. As a women’s consignment boutique, Mountain Renewal offers gently used fashion, covering the spectrum from Michael Kors to The North Face. The walls are lined with artfully placed selections of tops, jeans, sweaters, cocktail dresses, handbags, heels, boots and jewelry. Mixed into the rows of colorful clothing are Image Skincare products, offering an initial glimpse of the wide range of professional esthetician services also offered at Mountain Renewal.

Another popular service for both sun and snow seekers is the Dermaplane skincare treatment. This gentle treatment exfoliates the epidermis, leaving skin smoother, brighter and free of fine hair. It’s the perfect way to combat the climate’s effects on your skin after hours spent adventuring in the elements.

Aside from the professional treatments offered, perhaps the most sought-after experience at Spa del Sol and Shanti Yoga is the atmosphere created by the staff. The expert team of spa professionals blends beauty and wellness together with passion, creativity and innovation…with an approachable, laid back vibe that will leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling. 5 Questions
Avalanche Dogs Photo courtesy Heather Thiry
An Inside Look at These Amazing Human/Canine Teams For most of us, an avalanche is something we never expect to be caught in. Savvy backcountry skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers know to pack safety gear, read forecasts and recognize the signs. For those of us who ski inside the ropes, an avalanche is rare and not something we typically worry about, or even prepare for. But every so often, it happens. And after an avalanche, seconds count. That is when having a dog on the team can make all the difference. “An avalanche path that would take 12 people three hours to clear can be cleared by a dog in about 30 minutes,” says Heather Thiry, a professional ski patroller at Tamarack Resort and firefighter/paramedic at McCall Fire. Thiry is one of several ski patrollers at Tamarack Resort who are avalanche dog (aka “avy dog”) handlers. Bergen, her five-year-old German Shepherd, is a certified avy dog who is also employed by Tamarack Resort and McCall Fire. 36
At Brundage Mountain Resort, the reintroduction of avy dogs to the patrol team is in its second year. Janna Allen is one of the women leading the charge in this arena. Allen was just named the Ski and Mountain Patrol Director at Brundage, an elite title for a woman in the ski industry – less than 15 percent of Patrol Directors in the U.S. and Canada are women. She is also in the process of training her 1-year-old Golden Doodle, Linus P. Doodle, to be a certified avy dog. Brundage also has another puppy in training who will work with the Cat Skiing program.
To say we are inspired by these hard-working dogs and their dedicated handlers is an understatement. To get a behind-the-scenes look at what life is like as an avy dog team, we sat down with both women to learn about the program.
The presence of avalanche dogs in the McCall area has seen a recent resurgence. Tamarack Resort’s program has been in place essentially since the mountain opened in 2004, when a number of experienced avy dog patrollers from Colorado joined the team and brought their dogs with them. Currently, Bergen is the most senior dog on staff at Tamarack, joined by three puppies in training and two semi-retired avy dogs.
#1 Can any dog be an avalanche dog? Yes and no. “There was a time when most avy dogs were only purebreds,” says Thiry, “but that has really proven to be unnecessary for a dog’s success as long as they have the right qualities.” That includes a high prey and play drive, an ability to use their nose and a desire to work. On top of that, avalanche dogs are mountain ambassadors, taking pictures with families and interacting with kids, so they also have to be sociable. When selecting a puppy, most handlers will use some variation of the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test to assess their overall temperament and fit for life as an avy dog. “Size is another consideration,” says Allen. “We have to be able to pick a dog up and carry them if conditions call for it, plus, there are sometimes weight restrictions for flying on a helicopter.” Generally, most avy dogs are between 40 and 70 pounds and have coats well-suited to their snowy work environment. Current popular breeds include German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Doodles, Border Collies, Duck Tolling Retrievers and Belgian Malinois. Continued page 38
37
#2 What type of training is required? Training is always ongoing, for both the dog and the handler. “Puppies start out with basic obedience training and hide and seek games,” says Allen, “then work up to avalanchespecific skills like riding a chairlift, being belayed off of a chairlift, running between skis, riding a snowmobile and helicopter, going down a snow hole and finding a person in a burial.” Like any skilled profession, practice is key. “We try to do at least two, 10-minute sessions of nose work every day,” says Thiry. “I think a lot of people underestimate the amount of commitment it takes to train an avy dog,” she says. “It is daily work.” Allen agrees. “One of the most important things we do as a handler is to understand our dogs, learn their language,” she says. “And that takes a lot of work, a lot of listening to your dog.”

For both Thiry and Allen, a lot of their own training is dependent on their dedication to self-driven continued education. Idaho does not have a formal avalanche dog training program, so both rely on the expertise of other, well-established organizations, reading books, shadowing experienced trainers and traveling to training events around the region. Thiry and Bergen have participated in programs hosted by the Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment Team (C-RAD) and the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) while Allen and Linus are planning to attend training in Colorado and Utah this winter as he enters his second training season. “Our local resorts also try to work together,” says Allen. “Everyone trains a bit differently, but we all rely on the expertise of one another and patrollers who have worked with programs in other states.”

#3 How dangerous is this type of work for a dog?
“As a handler, we would never go into an area that had not been cleared,” says Allen. “Our first priority is scene safety.” Handlers must have avalanche experience to do this type of work. Thiry holds Pro Level 1 Avalanche Certification and Allen holds a Pro Level 2 Avalanche Certification and if they are deployed, the handler and dog team would be accompanied by an Avalanche Tech who has at least that same level of certification, if not higher. “We would never give a command to search unless we know it is safe,” says Thiry. “It is always a weighed risk, we will likely risk more to save more, but we don’t send a dog in blindly, the handler is going into the same situation as the dog and safety is always a top concern.” Continued page 40

#4 How should the public approach an avy dog? Part of the appeal of having avalanche dogs at a resort is that they are fabulous mountain ambassadors. “They really help patrollers be more approachable,” says Allen. “If we are talking to a group of kids about safety—skiing with a buddy, wearing a helmet, not stopping where you can’t be seen—a dog can be a great way to make it fun.” But before you run up to snap a photo with an avy dog, both Thiry and Allen have the same piece of advice…always ask first. “The same is true for any dog,” says Thiry, “but especially true for working dogs.” Even though their temperament and training makes an avy dog socialized, they can also be more intense so it is important to get permission from the handler before you run up to pet an avy dog. “There are also special considerations for the environment,” says Allen. Ski edges can cut a dog’s leg quite easily, so she typically asks people to take their skis off before approaching.
#5 What do you like most about being a handler?

For Thiry, it is a love of watching Bergen work. “I have never seen another person or another dog get as excited as him to go to work,” she says. And the way he works is amazing. “Being a Shepherd, he figures things out differently than a Lab or a Collie,” Thiry says. “I can see him work through a problem, see him get frustrated, and then get super stoked when he figures it out.” Another perk of the job? Getting to spend all day with your best four-legged buddy. Allen says that is one of her favorite parts of being a handler…“I mean, who wouldn’t want to bring their dog to work every day?”

Craftworks
Drop-In Art and A Gathering Place for Creativity By McKenzie Kraemer It is a pretty safe bet that at some point in your life you stared at a television screen, mesmerized by Bob Ross painting his “happy little trees.” There was a soothing quality to his voice as his brush floated around the canvas, dabbing paint here and there until the patchwork of odd shapes and random colors suddenly morphed into a perfectly organized (and beautiful) landscape scene. Even as he walked us through the steps, it never felt like we could create something as perfect as Bob, but we wanted to whip out the paints and brushes and give it a shot. That spirit has carried over into the growing popularity of interactive art classes. Paint and Sips, knitting clubs and instructional classes teaching everything from watercolors to pottery are popping up all over the place. And McCall is no exception. “I think people love the social aspect of it,” says Deborah Billingsley of McCall Craftworks, “they love getting to go home with something they created.” Deborah and her husband Aaron opened McCall Craftworks in June of 2018, and are a big part of the growing interactive art opportunities that can be found throughout town. They have offered classes including painting on canvas, pillow painting, introduction to watercolors, introduction to acrylic painting, mixed media, Japanese stab binding, beginner crochet, drawing, rock painting and mandala painting. Not to mention the hugely popular make-your-own Christmas ornament series. 44
Aaron says they would love to be able to offer a variety of classes every week, but it can be difficult to find instructors and fill classes with such frequency. As a result, McCall Craftworks has been quietly growing a less structured, more relaxed social art scene. “It really started with the Christmas ornaments,” says Deborah. Aaron says that when their own kids were young, the family would make ornaments together. As the years passed, they started buying ornaments instead of making them, but they were never quite as special. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to bring back that tradition,” says Aaron, “so we created a drop-in program where we would have all of the supplies ready to go and people could come by to make an ornament whenever they wanted.” And the community ate it up. “There were times when there were so many people in the store wanting to make ornaments that we would have to ask newcomers to wait until a chair freed up,” says Deborah.
This idea of a drop-in art event grew further when a group of women who typically met each month for wine asked if they could meet at McCall Craftworks instead and do a “Cork and Color” night. “The ladies brought the wine and we supplied the coloring books and pencils,” says Deborah. A match made in heaven. The success of unstructured events like these has spurred the Billingsley’s to grow similar self-directed art events. They are currently offering drop-in mandala rock painting and will offer Christmas ornament crafts in similar fashion again this year. They have also continued to host groups wanting a space for a social art gathering, from the Girl Scouts to birthday parties to groups of moms and kids. “We are really open to anything you can dream up,” says Deborah. “Just come with your idea and we can provide the supplies and some direction to get you started.”
For the future, the Billingsley’s are working to expand McCall Craftwork’s offerings with more mediums including macramé, pottery, woodworking, vintage ski projects and even glass blowing. “Our hope is to expand to a point where we can offer studio space for the community to use,” says Aaron. In the meantime, McCall Craftworks will be offering a variety of structured classes this season and is always open to anyone who wants to drop in and get creative. “We really want to offer a comfortable space for people to gather and share ideas and be inspired by one another,” says Deborah.

Slice of Life:
Behind Plow the
By McKenzie Kraemer
It isn’t magic. When school bus routes across the county are cleared of snow by 6am, it wasn’t elves that did the work. When the snow in downtown McCall has disappeared overnight, it wasn’t because a magician waved a wand. When you can make it to the local coffee shop for your daily dose of energy after a big storm, it wasn’t because a band of faeries lifted the snow from the roads. All this is made possible by an army of dedicated humans who give up sleep, family time and vacation days to ensure daily life in the mountains can go on despite the snow.

To maintain the vast network of roads in Valley County, it takes a massive coordinated effort between the county, cities and private contractors. Aside from Highway 55 which is maintained by the Idaho Transportation Department, these teams are responsible for clearing all winter-maintained roads from Smiths Ferry to McCall to Yellow Pine. Each entity has a general guideline for snowfall amounts that trigger crews to head out, generally between three to four inches, but they also look at the type of snow falling. “It really depends on the type of snow and the road,” says Jeff McFadden, Valley County Road Department Superintendent. “Six inches of fluffy snow on a side road may accumulate before a plow comes through, but an inch of heavy, wet snow on a road like Farm to Market can become a real safety concern.”

In the winter months, snow removal is a full-time job and for a plow driver, that means a lot of sleepless nights. “A typical winter day starts at midnight,” says McFadden. “We wake up, and look out of the window.” If it is not snowing, they go back to bed and wake up again every hour to check the weather. If snow is falling, Continued page 50

One of the reasons snow removal crews start so early is because there are fewer obstacles to contend with—like traffic and pedestrians—and visibility is better. “We are backing huge pieces of equipment out onto the highway,” says McFadden. “Each intersection takes three or four passes and that is a lot of time in the roadway. At night, we can see headlights coming.” On top of that, crews are working under deadlines. For the county and the cities, school bus routes are a top priority. “We have some bus routes that start running at 6am,” says McFadden, “so we have to get roads cleared in time.” For private contractors like Luke Crawford of Crawford Landscape, many of their business clients require snow removal to be complete by 5am so customers can access the business location. “It is actually really nice to be out in the middle of the night by yourself watching the snow come down, listening to your tunes,” says Crawford. “I enjoy it.”
Aside from the long days and early mornings, driving a plow or loader takes a lot of skill. “We have a hard time hiring people,” says Malvich. Crew members have to have experience driving heavy equipment, but experience isn’t always enough. “I have hired a couple million-mile truck drivers who spent a few days behind a plow and quit,” says McFadden. “They told us we were nuts.” That’s because there is a steep learning curve that can only be navigated with time behind a snow plow, learning the unique nuances of the job. Plow blades are angled at 30 degrees so a plow is always pulling to the left. To break through the combination of snow, drifts, ice chunks and, sometimes, hard, frozen snow that has been shoveled into the roadway from a residence, drivers have to maintain a certain speed. But hitting that debris at 30 miles an hour can cause a plow to jump off of the ground or into the middle of a roadway, so drivers always have to be alert and aware. On top of all that is the issue

they head to work. For most crews, the work day starts at 1am. “When three or four inches fall, most of our routes take eight hours,” says Chris Malvich, City of McCall Street Superintendent. “But that same route can take upwards of 16 hours if eight or ten inches fall.” So crews like to get an early start. When the weather won’t let up, road crews will take a break in the evening between 6pm and midnight then head back out for another early morning.
of visibility. “I have been plowing a road with six foot berms on either side and you can barely see the telephone poles,” says McFadden. But drivers get it done, experimenting with yellow and purple lenses, using their spotlights as a guide along a road’s edge or using reflective road markers tied to willow branches to mark a roadway and, perhaps most importantly, knowing their routes like the back of their hands. Following a winter storm, crews don’t get a day off. “We don’t take vacation from November to March,” says Malvich. The initial snow removal is only part of the job. Once roadways have been opened, the cleanup begins. “It usually takes several days to clean up a route,” says McFadden. That includes widening roads, cutting snowfloor and salting and sanding. “We are also cleaning up to make sure melted snow after a storm doesn’t linger to freeze and create more problems down the road,” says Crawford. On top of the sixteen hour days and specialized skills this job requires, there are also other challenges. There tend to be several public misconceptions about snow removal operations and techniques. For Valley County, one of the biggest challenges is long plow routes. “Once we start a route,” says McFadden, “we can’t go back to plow the same section of road twice or we would never get through the entire route.” The only exception to this is the school bus routes. During ongoing storms, crews will plow for school in the morning then re-plow the route to ensure kids can get safely home from school. But for most homeowners, that usually means a plow will only go by once in a 24 hour period, even if the snow continues to fall. In the City of McCall, berms and snow gate operation garner a lot of attention. A snow gate is used in residential areas to limit the amount of snow pushed in Continued page 52

front of driveways. After they finish with the downtown core, drivers will swap out their buckets for plows and snow gates. As the plow moves down the road, a three-foot snow gate is lowered along the length of a driveway then lifted once past a residential entrance. “Gates are only good to hold snow for about 20 feet,” says Malvich. “After that, snow starts to boil over.” While snow gates can be an effective tool, during larger storms where snow accumulates in greater amounts, a gate’s effectiveness can decrease. That said, however, the City still utilizes the gates as much as possible. “Even if a snow gate doesn’t entirely eliminate a berm in front of a driveway,” says Malvich, “the berms are much smaller, usually six inches to a foot tall, rather than leaving three or four feet of snow behind.”

With the immense amount of time, energy and challenge that goes into snow removal, crews become family. “Everybody stays until the last person finishes the last route,” says Malvich. “Everybody helps.” That mantra carries over into all parts of the community. In 2019, Cascade received four feet of snow and McCall received five feet of snow in 27 days. County routes were taking so long to plow that equipment would run out of gas. “Our mechanics were running fuel out to stranded plow drivers,” says McFadden. “It was all hands on deck.” For the public, there are several ways to support the snow removal effort. First, don’t park on roadways. “We don’t have a no-parking rule to be mean,” says Malvich. “We need a clear path to be able to do our job.” Second, be patient and respectful of snow removal equipment. “Our plows are 12 feet wide,” says McFadden, “when you see us coming, slow

WE’LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES
Another challenge specific to municipalities is the need to completely remove snow from downtown streets by trucking it away. In the downtown McCall core, from Colorado Street to Albertsons, snow is scraped from roads and sidewalks with loaders and hauled to snow storage areas. This creates two challenges: first, an increase in the amount of time it takes to clear the area and second, snow storage shortages. For private contractors like Crawford Landscape, snow storage is always a concern. “Each of our clients will designate an area we can use for storage,” says Crawford. “But at the end of a season, or with continuous storms like we received in February of 2019, that storage space can get full.” If that happens, snow would have to be loaded and trucked to a private holding area off-site, adding both time and expense.

down and move over – we will do the same.” Clearing potential obstacles is also a huge help. Digging out mailboxes and adding reflective tape make it easier for drivers to avoid them. Trash cans are another factor. If possible, set cans at the edge of your driveway and out of the main roadway then move them back as soon as they have been emptied. Above all, keep in mind that the people behind the plow are human. “After 12 or 14 hours working for the community, drivers go home to remove snow from their own driveways,” says McFadden. Berms and all.

DeTails Pet Grooming 302 E. Lake St., McCall (208) 271-2669
Wednesday – Saturday 9am – 5pm
Chef Steve Topple apparently listened to the idle community chatter. From neighborhood gossip to small talk on the street, everyone agreed McCall needed Thai food. Enter Jasmine + Ginger, Chef Topple’s latest creation located on the lake level of the historic Yacht Club building. Having successfully opened Ragazza di Bufalo in Donnelly, featuring delicious northern Italian cuisine, he jumped at the opportunity to open a new Thai restaurant. Chef Topple has lived around the world serving up his culinary skills and received international recognition for his talents. In launching Jasmine + Ginger, Chef Topple will focus on his love of seafood and Thai cuisine with classic dishes such as chicken fried rice, Tom Yum Noodles, Pad Thai and Massaman Beef Curry. After dinner, order up one of their Thai desserts (think mango sticky rice, homemade coconut ice cream, and more). Plus, there are plans for lunch service in the works. Stay tuned!

Northwest Passage Bed & Breakfast 201 Rio Vista Blvd., McCall (208) 315-1951 northwestpassagebandb.com Like many of our businesses, the new owners of the historical Northwest Passage Bed & Breakfast, Jennifer and Colby Peters, dreamed of living in McCall. This special spot was a property in great need of some TLC and a very specific, motivated owner with a vision. Jennifer’s creativity and culinary skills, Colby’s construction background and their army of close-knit family (all handy folks) make them the perfect people for the job. Together, they breathed new life into this beautiful bed and breakfast, located on the west side of town in the peaceful Rio Vista neighborhood. The original building was constructed in 1938. The renovation, which took the structure down to the studs, took a year and a half to rebuild and reimagine. This past spring, they opened the doors to a finished product that is homey and bright, with special touches in every corner. Guests at the B&B enjoy a delicious homemade breakfast every morning (think savory stuffed French toast with a blueberry sauce) and a walk through history with the preserved relics honoring the property’s illustrious history as the house that accommodated the cast and crew of “Northwest Passage,” a Spencer Tracey movie filmed right here in McCall. The Peters opted to keep the name, “Northwest Passage Bed & Breakfast,” to pay homage to the history and were able to salvage the original sign that continues to greet guests at the front of the property. We would highly recommend putting this unique stop on your McCall bucket list!

Ranch View Venue & Campgrounds 3523 South End Rd., New Meadows (208) 412-7756 ranchviewvenue-camping.com
This stunning historical ranch, set among 560 acres of private property in Meadows Valley, is one of the newest wedding and event venues in the area. Seeing a need for a rustic, easy-going event location, owner Karan Eby converted her family ranch property and 100-year-old barn into the Ranch View Venue & Campgrounds. One of the things that makes this venue stand out from the rest is onsite RV and dry camping so your guests can stay where the action is. Knowing guests have a safe and convenient spot to stay means more time to have fun and relax. A certain number of chairs are provided with featured packages and the venue can host up to 200 people. Karan also has décor, beverage, furniture, and more available onsite for rent. The simple and bucolic setting, with its 360-degree view, is the perfect spot to make memories with your loved ones. Plus, who doesn’t love a photobombing cow or horse? Additionally, separate camping is available for those just passing through in need of a spot to RV or dry camp for the night!
In addition to these new businesses, we want to welcome our new McCall Area Chamber members to the family! AAUW Long Valley

Winter may be here, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a taste of sunshine! When the cabin fever starts to set in, whip up a warm, sunny boost with these delicious recipes that will serve a crowd.
FRENCHIES ON THIRD CHELADA YAYA Frenchies is a cozy neighborhood hangout and a convenient place to score a quick scratch-cooked meal or settle in to enjoy a cold drink and a game. Their specialties include Burgers, Po Boys, Southern Soups and Blue Plates with a special Sunday brunch as well! The Chelada Yaya sips perfectly with everything on the menu, but goes especially well with the Cubano Burger, Shrimp Po Boy, Crawfish Chowder and Sunday Morning Biscuits and Gravy. Try the Frenchie’s Southern spin on a classic Mexican Bloody Beer at home.
INGREDIENTS: For rim of glass: Tajin (Can be found in produce and spice sections of grocery store) Cajun Blackening Seasoning Fresh Lime For Chelada: 1 bottle Clamato (or Tomato Juice) 6 T. Worcestershire 3 T. Soy Sauce 10 dashes Crystals Hot Sauce (We choose a nice middle ground to satisfy most. By all means, put some extra out for people to choose) 3 T. key lime juice 1 T. Tajin-Blackening Seasoning Mixture
DIRECTIONS: Mix Equal Parts Tajin and Cajun Blackening Seasoning in a shallow bowl. Set aside 1 Tablespoon. Slice lime into wedges with a slit in the center. Run lime along the rim of a pint glass. Dip the rim into the seasoning mixture and coat liberally. Next, mix ingredients for the Chelada. Fill the glass ¼ full of the Chelada mix. Add ice to the rim. Slowly pour a Modelo or your choice of Mexican Lager to the top. Stir gently and garnish with a fresh lime wedge.

DUTCH OVEN DEN’S PEACH COBBLER We tend to associated Dutch ovens with campout cooking and meals on a river trip, but Dutch Oven Den is bringing the tradition of camp style Dutch oven cooking—and the delicious, hearty meals that come with it—out of the campfire and into catered events. Their mobile commercial kitchen means that everything they prepare is hot, fresh and cooked from scratch on site. The menu is mouthwatering…Prime Rib, Country Style Ribs, Mac and Cheese, Dutch Oven Spuds, Stew and, our favorite, a huge variety of Cobblers. After 18 years in business catering weddings, company parties, family events and groups upwards of 1,200 strong, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on one of their crowdpleasing recipes. Bake this recipe in a traditional oven or try your hand at a camp style Dutch oven. Either way, this Peach Cobbler is sure to have you licking the plate clean.
INGREDIENTS: Sliced peaches 1 1/3 cup sugar 1 ½ cup flour ½ tsp salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 cubes butter ¼ cup dry Quick Oats (optional)
DIRECTIONS: Fill a 10-inch Dutch oven with sliced peaches (or a 9x13 pan if you plan to cook in a traditional oven) and sprinkle with sugar. Mix dry ingredients together and cut in cold butter. Sprinkle over Peaches.

208.634.1646 delishcatering.com
IN A TRADITIONAL OVEN: Layer ingredients in a 9x13 pan and bake at 375º for 50 to 60 minutes.
IN A DUTCH OVEN: Layer ingredients in a 10-inch Dutch oven. Ring the top of the lid with briquettes and put 2 in the center (approximately 16 to 18 total). On the bottom, make a ring of 8 briquettes and 2 additional in the center of the ring (10 total). In 30 to 45 minutes, rotate the whole oven 180 degrees and the lid 180 degrees to aid even cooking. When the top is browned nicely the cobbler is ready to eat. Pair with your favorite ice cream (we like Vanilla Bean the most!).

The patio is open! One of our favorite things about warm sunny days in McCall is dining al fresco and sampling the delicious fare of our local restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Just about every eatery has a place to take advantage of the sunshine or pick up something to go and picnic at Legacy Park along the shores of Payette Lake. The Farmers Market is also open each Wednesday and Saturday and a great place to find fresh local produce, meat and baked goods.

McCall’s Mountain Bike Scene Keeps Evolving
82
While beach cruisers may rule the streets of downtown McCall, mountain bikes are king when it comes to the trails. And McCall has an ever-growing network of premier singletrack. Bear Basin, Brundage Mountain Resort, Jug Mountain Ranch, Ponderosa State Park and Tamarack Resort are all adding new trails to explore. In addition to the efforts at these riding destinations, one group is taking on a project of epic proportions to complete a trail that encircles the entirety of Payette Lake.
The first phase opens up trails that can take you from downtown McCall to the Brundage Lookout Road (FS 451), climb to the Red Gate Road (FS 459) and continue north on singletrack ending at the north end of Payette lake on Warren Wagon Road. For a quick introduction to the Payette Lake Trail, start at the Brush Creek snowmobile parking lot on Warren Wagon Road to access a 4 mile loop along Copet Creek. For details on this route, and others along the Payette Lake Trail, visit trailforks.com.
The Central Idaho Mountain Bike Association started work on the Payette Lake Trail seven years ago. From scouting possible routes, obtaining permitting, flagging alignments and fundraising, the project has been a beast. In the summer of 2019, a grand opening was held for the first phase of the project, connecting the key western routes around the lake. With these new sections of trail in place, and utilizing existing pathways from the City of McCall and Ponderosa State Park, the Payette Lake Trail has been expanded to 20 miles. At its completion, the trail is planned to be 33 miles.
The coming years will see work continue on the Payette Lake Trail, focusing on the eastern side of the project as well as adding signage and enhancing sections of trail already in place. To build out the final phase, CIMBA will be partnering with the Idaho Department of Lands and the Payette National Forest to permit, plan and build more trail. If you would like to stay up-to-date on the progress or join the effort by volunteering or donating, please visit cimbarides.org.
