Get to know the city's artistic side
WITH A U K U L E L E IN EVERY GUEST ROOM, Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel (139 E. Kilbourn Ave.) isn’t your average hotel. Which makes sense, because Milwaukee isn’t your average city. A vibrant arts scene and a growing creative class showcases how Milwaukee’s manufacturing roots have blossomed into a maker culture with strong DIY aesthetics. At Saint Kate, you can see a performance in the 90-seat Arc Theatre, take in a free gallery exhibition just o the lobby at MOWA | DTN (a downtown extension of the Museum of Wisconsin Art), or even sleep in the middle of a work of art in one of five specialty rooms designed from start to finish by local artists. It’s one of many places where the arts come to life all over the city. Let your creative side out during your visit…

Sculpture Milwaukee (sculpturemilwaukee.com) is a free, outdoor exhibition that takes over Wisconsin Avenue, downtown’s main thoroughfare, with 20+ world-class, monumental sculptures through October. A popular corridor in the East Tosa neighborhood was transformed in 2019 with a series of six juried murals along North Avenue. Whether you’re dining on tasty tacos at BelAir Cantina (6817 W. North Ave.) or picking up a dozen hand-crafted doughnuts at Cranky Al’s (6901 W. North Ave.), you can enjoy creative murals by international artists. There’s even a “bonus mural” unrelated to the other six at Alfa Flower Shop (7001 W. North Ave.), home to bouquetmaking classes, custom floral arrangements, and unique gifts. Get a feel for an “Up North” cabin complete with log furniture and taxidermy at Camp Bar (6600 W. North Ave.) or stop in at The Fermentorium Barrel House (6933 W. Bark Break ➞ Don’t leave your best friend at home when you travel! There’s no reason man’s best friend can’t also be man’s best travel companion when you visit a dog-friendly city like Milwaukee. The Iron Horse Hotel (500 W. Florida St.), the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel (310 E. Chicago St.), and Hilton Milwaukee City Center (509 W. Wisconsin Ave.) roll out the red carpet for four-legged guests. Check the resources section for more pet-friendly properties (pg. 46). Your pet can join you on the patios of many popular restaurants, and even join you inside the taproom at Black Husky Brewing (909 E. Locust St.), where you'll find plenty of gear made with pups in mind. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on Milwaukee Boat Line tours and inside Milwaukee Kayak Company kayaks and canoes. Enjoy leashed walks along over 100 miles of trails through Milwaukee County Parks, or visit off-leash parks like the 26-acre Runway Dog Park (1214 E. Rawson Ave., Oak Creek) featuring a covered pavilion, agility equipment, and a separate fenced-in area for small dogs.
