PRESENTED BY: Isosceles in association with Useful Idiots presents

SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL…SHE WAS UNSINKABLE…SHE WAS DOOMED…

On April 15th1912, the Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, slipped below the frigid waters of the Atlantic.

Yet J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line, stepped into a lifeboat and sailed away from the stricken ship, sailed away from his passengers, sailed away from the cries and screams and tears.

‘The Man Who Left the Titanic’ evokes that terrible voyage and asks whether Bruce Ismay only did what any of us might have done in the same circumstances, or should his actions that night consign his name to infamy?

Was he a coward, or merely human?

This play has toured throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for a number of years to enormous acclaim. www.isosceles.biz

ON THE BEACH

DATE: Thursday 9 February – Friday 3 March TIME: During Opening Hours PRICE: FREE

An exhibition of sculptures and collage concerning climate change. The world is understood to be an interacting life supporting system that we are a part of and are sustained and affected by. Relentless exploitation has created an imbalance that has brought consequences. Central to the exhibition is a collection of small sculptures, “On the Beach”, as in “all washed up”. Consider these as fragments of architectural ornamentation, perhaps remnants of buildings overwhelmed by rising sea levels. Imagine the forced abandonment of cities. Supporting this installation are collages that are a response to school-strike demos and other efforts to raise awareness of climate change. We are living in a difficult time, pressed up against the reality of a changing climate. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and that any action is inadequate. Can art make a difference? We work with the hope that the experience of art can alter our world view, so we can at least sense something of what needs to be done.

BELFAST PRINT WORKSHOP

DATE: Thursday 9 March – Friday 31 March TIME: During Opening Hours

PRICE: FREE

Down Arts Centre has graciously come through the many lock-downs, honouring the agreement between Belfast Print Workshop (BPW) to host an enticing exhibition of 7 artists working in the realms of printmaking, painting, video, installation, sculpture and other disciplines.

There is no theme, only that artists are now once again relishing the opportunity to exhibit work in venues that have reopened to showcase the work of people that had found it challenging to exhibit work physically. Contrastingly the isolation increased awareness of how important creativity is, as part of our collective well-being through particularly troubled times.

This exhibition showcases the work of professional artists and printmakers from BPW, a resource for artists in the disciplines of printmaking situated in the centre of Belfast. A resource that allows artists to practice in areas such as screen printing, etching, lithography, wood relief printmaking and many more traditional methods of creating and printing works within the realm of the visual arts.

The art of printmaking and its many hybrid forms can be demonstrated by the diverse range of artists work on display at Down Arts Centre. Many concepts and ideas may begin or even manifest as a drawing, a print and possibly arrive as an edition or suite of prints
