St. Bronagh’s Bell This ancient bell, whose ringing had been heard for centuries, was discovered hidden in an old oak tree. Now hosted in St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, it will grant any prayer if rung three times.
Kilbroney Graveyard Near the site of St Bronagh’s 6th century convent are the ruins of a medieval church, an ancient cross marking her burial place, a holy well offering cures for throats and eyes and the grave of the world’s tallest man, Giant Murphy.
Barrack Green United Irishman Tom Dunn was flogged to death here for refusing to reveal his comrades’ names. A festival is held in the village each year to honour him.
The Square Little changed in centuries, it was here General Patton addressed US troops in the Second World War. Each July it is the hub of the Fiddler’s Green Festival.
Ross Monument The 100ft obelisk towering over the entrance to the village honours local man General Ross of Bladensburg, whose troops burned down the White House and whose actions inspired the American national anthem.
Crag Graveyard The ruins here are those of St Pauls, the village church which was dedicated in 1732 and which preceded the current parish church. Elizabeth, widow of General Ross, is buried here.

Rostrevor, Star of the North Myths, magic and music “That part of Rostrevor which overlooks Carlingford Lough is my idea of Narnia.” So said CS Lewis, the author of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and the other Narnian stories, for whom Rostrevor was a truly inspirational place. At the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, on the shore of spectacular Carlingford Lough, magical Rostrevor is barely changed from its Edwardian heyday. From the charming Narnia Trail and pony and trap rides to its world-class mountain biking trails, Kilbroney Park offers a host of attractions, while Carlingford Lough is home to sailing, banana boating, canoeing, windsurfing, water skiing, powerboat racing and much more. The Ross Monument, which towers above the entrance to the village, celebrates the local man whose actions inspired the writing of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’, while Rostrevor’s fascinating heritage includes links to ancient mythology,

The village of Rostrevor is becoming increasingly popular among holidaymakers for its idyllic location, folk music and abundance of activities, including adventure sports, mountain biking, hill walking and horse riding. Visitors exploring the 4,000-acre Rostrevor Forest are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from a variety of viewpoints, such as the world famous Cloughmore Stone. Left by a receding glacier 11,000 years ago, it stands almost 1,000 feet above the village. Atmospheric pubs, enticing eateries and superb accommodation attract visitors all year around. An ideal base to explore Carlingford lough and the Mourne Mountains, Rostrevor is just an hour’s drive from Dublin and Belfast.
