Mennonite Heritage

From bierocks to zwiebacks, Newton’s Mennonite Heritage is alive and well in its food traditions. Find bierocks — traditional beef and cabbage stuffed buns — on the menu at several restaurants, including daily at The Breadbasket. Looking to sample more? Breadbasket hosts a full German buffet on Friday and Saturday nights. Local festivals also feature many traditional Mennonite and German flavors, too.

Looking for something sweet? Druber’s is a downtown institution with late-night hours, frequented by college students, locals, and Amtrak passengers looking for food and coffee in the middle of the night. Open at 11:30 most nights, it serves glazed and cake donuts and local favorite peanut butter rolls until 1 p.m.

Blue Sky Sculpture

Newton’s newest mural is the first project of the Newton Murals & Arts Project. It is located on the back side of the building at 526 Main St. Grab a cup of coffee and take a look as you explore Newton’s historic downtown.

No art lover’s trip to Newton would be complete without a visit to the Blue Sky Sculpture. Listed as one of 8 Wonders of Kansas Art, this sculpture is located in Centennial Park and captures the whimsy of the everchanging Kansas sky. Enjoy it from a distance at the observation bench, or check it out up close. Steps lead up to the sculpture’s platform.

Warkentin House

Ever wondered just how Kansas earned its reputation as the “Breadbasket of America”? Bernhard Warkentin made significant contributions to that. Visit his family’s large Victorian home, which still contains 75% of its original contents and learn how this Newtonian influenced the agricultural history of Kansas.

2 Historic Walking Tour Newton’s Main Street is a National Historic District, lined with buildings dating to the 1800s. Pick up a copy of the Downtown Historic Walking Tour and learn more about the buildings that today house locally-owned restaurants and shops. Guides are available at Newton City Hall, Newton Public Library and Anderson’s Book & Office Supply.

History buff

Carriage Factory Art Gallery

History meets art in this former Newton Carriage Works turned art gallery. Come see one of the current exhibitions, or join us for an opening reception or monthly Third Thursday entertainment. While you’re there, pick up a unique, locally made piece to take home. If you love artisan-made items, also visit Clayworks Gallery, Gathered Goods and Eau Lily while you’re downtown.

Chisholm Trail Born a trail head on the Chisholm Trail in 1871, Newton’s first years were rowdy. Though little remains of the cattle trail days, a few significant sites are still visible. A new historical marker tells the story of the Hide Park Massacre, and swales from the running of the cattle can still be seen near the Kauffman Museum in North Newton. Sand Creek Trail

Known as the “Trail of Two Cities,” Sand Creek Trail winds along its namesake creek from the heart of Newton into North Newton. Round trip, the trail covers 7 miles. In Newton, it is mostly paved and features several parks and playgrounds, restrooms, a boat dock for paddlers and water fountains for people and pets. In North Newton, interpretive signs tell about the area’s history and heritage and a dirt path leads into a wooded grove at Bethel College’s Memorial Garden.

If an afternoon on the golf course is your type of outdoor fun, don’t miss Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Host site of the last-ever USGA Amateur Public Links tournament in 2014, this course regularly hosts NCAA tournaments and hosts its first pro tournament in May 2019. Look for special rates and public tournaments throughout the year.

Athletic Park

Grab the family and a picnic basket and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in Athletic Park. Shelters and barbecue grills make enjoying an outdoor meal easy. The kids can enjoy a playground and the municipal swimming pool. Other activities include sand volleyball, horseshoes, tennis, basketball and even camping. Don’t miss the Mennonite Settler Statue while you’re there.

Parks & trails Fresh air and family fun await in Harvey County’s outdoor spaces Newton City Parks The City of Newton maintains 17 public parks. Here are some of the most popular. Athletic Park 700 W. 1st, Newton Home to Fischer Field, the municipal swimming pool, and the Mennonite Settler statue, this nearly 40-acre park features many amenities including sand volleyball courts, horseshoes, community shelters, restrooms, playgrounds and tennis courts. Centennial Park & Dog Park 1500 N. Kansas, Newton This park features Newton’s baseball and softball complex, a disc golf course, the Blue Sky Sculpture, a sledding hill, flag football field, restrooms and community shelters. Ask the locals ... What’s a great snack to take to the park? Spicy Pretzels 1 regular size bag of pretzel sticks 1 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. lemon pepper 1 ½ tsp. garlic powder 1 package Hidden Valley Ranch dry mix ¾ cup canola oil Gallon size zip-top bag Put the pretzels into a gallon size zip-top bag. Mix cayenne pepper, lemon pepper, garlic powder, ranch and canola oil together and pour mixture over the pretzels in the bag. It is best if you can leave the pretzels in the bag overnight but a couple hours will work, too. Shake the bag occasionally to help mix the seasonings with the pretzels. Ride the train Amtrak information Newton’s Amtrak Station is located at 414 N. Main in downtown Newton. The facility features an enclosed waiting area, wheelchairaccessible restrooms, checked baggage service and a ticket office.

Parking

Long-term parking is available approximately one block west of the station behind the Post Office. The parking lot can be accessed from W. 4th or W. 5th. There is no charge for the parking. Shuttle service to Wichita

Amtrak offers a bus shuttle service to and from Wichita to connect passengers to the Newton rail station. The northbound bus leaves daily at 1:10 a.m. from the bus station at 214 S. Topeka, Wichita, to catch the 2:45 a.m. train in Newton. The southbound bus leaves Newton at 4 a.m. for Wichita. The bus shuttle also connects the Southwest Chief and Heartland Flyer lines. Route

Newton is on the Southwest Chief route, which runs daily from Chicago to Los Angeles via the American Southwest. The route is part of the Trails & Rails Program, and at times National Park Service guides are onboard the Southwest Chief between Albuquerque and La Junta, Colo.; and Chicago and La Plata, Mo. The train departs Newton westbound for Los Angeles at 2:45 a.m. daily. It departs Newton eastbound for Chicago at 2:19 a.m. daily.
