xplore
Newton was founded in 1871 as the Santa Fe Railroad chugged westward across the plains and cowboys drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail from Texas. Newton’s early years as a cowtown were brief but rowdy. Though the cowboys soon moved farther down the trail, the railroad continued to shape the town as Mennonite immigrants from Germany and the Ukraine, including Bernard Warkentin, helped establish Newton as an important influence in Kansas’ agricultural future. The Mennonite influence is still felt in Newton’s food, culture and history. Today, Newton and neighboring North Newton feature an active arts community, three National Historic Districts, a variety of museums and attractions, Bethel College, a championship golf course, first-class convention center and many other amenities. Newton is also an Amtrak-served community. History buffs, families, outdoor enthusiasts, art lovers and others will find plenty to see and do in Newton. We welcome you and invite you to explore our community. For more information about Newton and local attractions, contact the Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau at 316-284-3642 or visit www.ToNewton.com.

Public Art
Located on the north-facing wall of 304 N. Main St., “The Imagineers” is a mural featuring people gathered at a table, which symbolizes the people of community coming together. The figures are surrounded by symbols of Newton and North Newton and references to the railroad, Hispanic heritage, Bethel College, Harvey Girls, the Mennonite community, wheat farming and the Chisholm Trail, among others. The mural was created in the summer of 2010.
Blue Sky Sculpture
Newton’s Blue Sky Sculpture captures the whimsy of the ever-changing Kansas sky. This sculpture is located in Centennial Park near the intersection of 12th and Kansas Avenue and has been designated one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Art. It was designed through the joint efforts of artists Phil Epp, painter; Terry Corbett, ceramist; and Conrad Snider, ceramist. The sculpture invites the viewer to consider how the natural Kansas sky and the art installation work together. The sculpture also lends inspiration for the cloud motif on the town’s water tower and directional signs. Centennial Park is always open and admission is free.

Mennonite Settler Statue
This 17-foot tall statue was built in 1942 out of Kansas limestone in Newton’s Athletic Park. The statue was financed through contributions of wheat as a joint project of a Newton community initiative and a Works Progress Administration (WPA) art project. Matt Nixon was the sculptor. The sculpture honors Mennonite farmers and Kansas’ wheat heritage. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Athletic Park is always open and admission is free.

They share their music in businesses and at special events and are frequently found at the Third Thursday gatherings at Carriage Factory Gallery. The NUTS perform at Prairie Harvest. German flavors are part of Newton’s history The Mennonite migration of the late 1800s not only brought more people to the Newton area, it also brought food traditions that have remained a part of the community’s food culture ever since. One of the most popular is the bierock, a yeast roll filled with meat, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, seasonings and sometimes cheese. These can be found at regional street fairs and festivals as well as on the menu daily at The Breadbasket (219 N. Main). Breadbasket also offers locals and visitors a chance to sample an array of German fare such as zwieback, a rich, sweet bun; verenika, a dough pocket filled with a cottage cheese mixture and topped with ham gravy; and borscht, a soup of Ukrainian origin often made with beets. The restaurant offers a German buffet each Friday and Saturday evening.
