Nauticus
2025 is set to be a transformational year in the history of Norfolk, with a variety of projects set to be unveiled over its course. From nature preserves to sustainable initiatives, expanded cycling options and a deeper dive on the area’s maritime history, this year promises a lot for visitors to explore. At Norfolk Botanical Garden, grand ambition meets a beautiful, immersive experience in the Garden of Tomorrow, coming in fall. The highlight will be the stunning Perry Conservatory, a two-story 26,000-square-foot structure that will house threatened plants from around the world and become a centerpiece of the garden’s conservation efforts. Art and culture lovers will find much to love at the Chrysler Museum’s newly-expanded Perry Glass Studio. Tripling in size and offering more educational programs, the museum will further cement the studio’s reputation as a world class glass institution. Just down the road, Nauticus has undergone a major renovation. The $21.5 million Reimagine Nauti-

cus project features new interactive exhibits, a planetarium, a maritime simulator and a public plaza with stunning views of the Elizabeth River. Norfolk is also committed to sustainability and resilience, as evidenced by the recently-opened Ryan Resilience Lab. Part of the Elizabeth River Project, this “living lab for a warming world” showcases innovative building practices and offers educational programs on climate change and environmental protection. The lab is located on a site that is projected to be overtaken by sea level rise, serving as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for climate action. Cyclists, runners and those looking for a lovely stroll will be glad to hear the Elizabeth River Trail is expanding in 2025. The ERT’s new trailhead at the Larchmont Library will feature a kiosk, kayak launch, improved signage and outdoor recreational spaces. This expansion will make the trail even more accessible and enjoyable for visitors.
Norfolk is also excited to become a popular cruise destination. Starting in February, Carnival Cruise Line will offer year-round cruises to ports in the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas on the Carnival Sunshine, bringing a renewed sense of excitement for travelers to and from Mermaid City. Norfolk’s ever-popular Naval Station Bus Tours have returned, offering a true behind-the-scenes glimpse into life on Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval installation. The 60-minute tour includes the homes of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, Chambers Field Air Station and the fleet’s ships. Finally, the ever-popular Selden Market on Main St. gets a refreshed look in 2025, with a new color palette, upgraded furniture, remodeled bathrooms and a new kitchen space. These improvements will make the business incubator a more inviting and enjoyable place to visit local vendors.

ocated just outside Downtown and next to Ghent, the NEON District is known as the city’s most vibrant neighborhood. Art museums, public murals, and local businesses add to the vibrancy of this neighborhood making it perfect for a day of exploring.
Dive into the city’s vast art community by exploring over 30,000 works of art and artifact at the Chrysler Museum of Art. With a range of art spanning centuries and a vast collection of glass art, this museum sparks creativity just walking in the door. Learn more about the beauty and skill that comes with glass art blowing at the Perry Glass Studio, part of the Chrysler Museum of Art, this separate building across the street has undergone a massive expansion inviting visitors to blow their own glass pieces or watch the master at work as they create more complex pieces. Be sure to enjoy the sunny days and warm weather with a stroll throughout the neighborhood as you hunt down the vibrant murals that decorate buildings. See beautiful pieces tucked into alleys and hiding in corners along with larger works of art on the sides of buildings along the main streets. You’ll also find additional artwork for sale in the main gallery from various artists. Get a taste of Norfolk’s performing arts with an opera show at the Harrison Opera House. Celebrating NEON in October: Dynamic, spirited and community-focused, the annual NEON Festival takes place over a pair of nights each October. The event showcases the district’s creative energy through a variety of performances, exhibitions and interactive experiences. The streets are closed down to vehicle traffic, allowing visitors to safely explore the festival’s multiple venues, including the recently-opened new portions of Chrysler Museum’s Perry Glass Studio. During the fest, visitors can enjoy performances from several genres, from indie to rock to hip-hop, along with visual arts including painting, sculpture and installation art. There’s also street art – of both the temporary and the permanent variety, such as the dozens of murals that adorn the walls around the NEON District. The Triple-A Baltimore Orioles affiliates, the Norfolk Tides, play at Harbor Park, offering stunning views, an old-school atmosphere and seriously competitive games. For visitors to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, wheelchairs are available for rent. The garden’s trams, garden pathways, picnic shelters and other facilities are all wheelchair accessible.

Transportation Getting around Norfolk is a snap. At the Norfolk international Airport, access ramps greet you in the parking lots, while inside passengers can borrow wheelchairs and luggage carts for easy movement from Point A to Point B. Riding Amtrak is a convenient way to move up and down the east coast, with Norfolk as a major hub. Onboard its Northeast Regional train, ADA restrooms and accessible seating are available, while at the station, Amtrak-provided wheelchairs are available as is assistance boarding and deboarding the train. Getting around town, Hampton Roads Transit welcomes service animals and offers free fares via its Paratransit services.
