From Christmas Day, 1941 through April 1st, 1946, local volunteers met each and every troop train traveling through North Platte on the main line of Union Pacific railroad, the predominant corridor for troop movement across the country. During the 54 months of operation, the North Platte Canteen extended home town hospitality to more than six million service men and women.
