The Sunndal mountains consist of 23 peaks reaching over 1800 meters and is an Eldorado for hiking, summer as winter. Demanding hikes are rewarded with amazing fjord views. Aursjøveien was originally an access road for the construction work on Aursjøen in 1947. The 55 kilometre toll road is said to be tougher than Trollstigen, featuring a walk out to Aurstupet as the absolute highlight. On the way you can have a picnic in picturesque surroundings, eat and sleep at Aursjøhytta, make a detour on foot searching for the wild reindeer or a dip in the mountain lakes. Aursjøveien is perfect for a roundtrip with Mardølafossen and Eikesdalen in Nesset.

VINNUFOSSEN
Approaching Sunndalsøra from Oppdal, you will pass by Vinnufossen, Norways tallest waterfall. The waterfall springs out of Vinnubreen, the largest glacier in Møre og Romsdal, and cascades down the mountain, dropping about 860 meters in several stages. Vinnufossen can be experienced from an information point right next to R70, but the greatest view of it can be had if you walk the foot- and bike-path a few hundred meters up from the parking.

FRESH WATER FISHING Such big land areas provide a paradise for fresh water fishing, regardless of the level of skill or adventure seeking. This Eldorado is almost unexplored, and provides great potential for finding your own fairy tale kingdom. In Trollheimen more than 200 fishing lakes have been mapped out, and Sunndal has over 100 lakes with fish in. The museum Leikvin is a very picturesque collection of fold buildings, perfect for romantic occasions like weddings. Placed between two of the tallest waterfalls in the world, this museum presents the whole local history from stone age up to today, especially featuring the British upper class coming to fish salmon in the 1800s. The museum is open 15. June - 15. August + by booking. The rest of the park is open, but unmanned the whole year.

Surnadal Camping Brekkøya is a large caravan site situated in the centre of Surnadal. The caravan site has its own river stretch and good knowledge of fishing and good spots. The site features cabins, caravans and space for motorhomes. Modern communal areas and the option of additional services like breakfast and dinner. Excellent starting point for river fishing, but also for daytrips in the area, along fjords or in the mountain.
Along the fjords there’s ample opportunity to find your own little bay, or you can visit the places where we have adapted facilities for bathing.
There are many other small providers of cabins and other sleeping arrangements, and we have also not touched on all the activities or hikes in the area. Get in touch with out Touristinformations if you want help planning your trip!
Opp & Ut is situated furthest out in the Surnadalsfjord and offer activities and experiences based in an old family farm. The farm has been in this family for centuries and has 15 intact houses. Several of the houses were built in the early 1600s and “Masstua” at the farm is probably the oldest two storey building in Nordmøre still to be intact. The farm itself in an experience, but there are also other things to see and do. Furu Laksvald og Campingsenter is situated just outside Sunndalsøra in the direction of Oppdal and is a perfect starting point for salmon fishing in Driva or trips in the area. The caravan site has its own fishing rights and good knowledge of fishing and good spots. Here you’ll find cabins with communal sanitary facilities and good space for caravans and motorhomes. The caravan site is a member of the NB Bobilcamp – chain and NBCC Topp Camping.
Fjordruta is a relatively new tour. This route takes you from the sea in Kristiansund to Hemne in Trøndelag. A trip providing mountain experience, fjord views and family friendly stages. Many of the cabins here are nice daytrips from Surnadal and the cabin network is made so you can walk from Fjordruta over to Trollheimen via cabins in Surnadal.
NESØYA BRYGGE
Down by the water in idyllic Todalsøra, just by the steamboat pier, you’ll find Todalen Brygge. A great starting point for trips on the fjord or in the mighty mountains of Todalen. Big fishermen’s cottages of high standard. Sauna. Fishing boat hire. At Todalen Brygge owner and manager Erling has created his own pub selling wine, beer and spirits.
Salmon fishing has great tradition in Nordmøre. In the late 1800s the area was very popular with English aristocracy, and that has left a mark. The most famous visitor was the Scottish Lady Arbuthnot, who settled down in Sunndal. Surna is still one of the best salmon rivers in the country, but you can also fish in Driva, Bøvra, Toåa and Rinna. Norsk Laksefestival is hosted annually in Surnadal. Nesøya is a 321 acre island, covered in woodland, and placed in the middle of the fjord between Meisingset and Stangvik. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and has road access to the cabin door. Nesøya Brygge has modern, spacious cabins and fishermen’s cottages with direct access to the sea. The cabins offer privacy, being set in the forest just above the road, surrounded by great hiking terrain. The fishermen’s cottages are waterfront, making it practically possible to fish from your veranda. Fugelvåg camping is idyllically placed by Ålvundfjorden, between Sunndal and Surnadal. The caravan site has its own beach, nice communal areas, great space for motorhomes or caravans and cosy cabins, all beachfront. The site has areas for one day- and season visitors. You can hire a boat/canoe for fishing, or go hiking in the surrounding mountains. The site is also an excellent base for excursions to Trollheimen, Dovrefjell og Sunndalsfjella Nasjonalpark, Innerdalen and Atlanterhavsvegen.

While the weather beaten Gammelhytta(1889) charm many visitors, Innerdalshytta (1989) has all the modern facilities you can want. The lounges are light and cosy and the kitchen serves traditional Norwegian food and a variety of drinks. FJORDFISHING
Gjøra Camping is peacefully placed by the road to Åmotan and Sunndalsfjella. The caravan site features cabins with bathrooms, kitchen and TV, sanitary facilities of a good standard and a pleasant common room by the reception. The site sells fishing tickets, has free internet and a dump station.
Gøran Bolme has quickly built up a wide ranging offer of activities and experiences through iTrollheimen. Gøran cooperates with Den Gode Maten on local food, but personally he’s open to travelling far away to give his guests a wonderful experience, be it through guiding in Trollheimen, travelling teambuilding or troll-tours in Helgetunmarka.
Trollheimen is an especially rich mountain area containing a variety of vegetation and animals. There are many starting points for hikes in Trolheimen, the most famous being Innerdalen, Kårvatn in Todalen and Folddalen in Rindal /Surnadal. Kårvatn can also sport the air quality measuring station for Europe. Trolla, the highest peak in Trollheimen can be accessed from Innerdalen. Snota is another popular destination, and can be accessed from several starting points in Surnadal/Rindal. Innerdalen is often referred to as the most beautiful valley in Norway, and offers the hike Bjøråskaret-Innerdalen.

The English built villa Nyheim Lodge is situated in Gjøra, where you take off towards Åmotan and Grøvudalen. The lodge has kept its original interiors and runs a summer restaurant featuring homemade food and beer, wine and spirits. With some luck you’ll drop by on a day where the house fish soup is on the menu, it’s well worth a taste! Nyheim has four bedrooms, kept to a simple but authentic standard where the guests share a bathroom.
Gråhaugen is an excellent starting point for hikes in Trollheimen, with Snota as mail destination. Follow the road from Øvre Surnadal to Gråsjø. In summer the road is open to cars all the way, in winter you park at the power station below the dam and walk the last 300 metres. The facilities have 42 beds, spread between the main house, and smaller cabins. Phillipshaugen is situated in Øksendal, run by young outdoor enthusiasts and is the perfect starting point for trips in the Sunndal mountains. Phillipshaugen Lodge was built in 1899 by Ethelbert Lort Phillips, one of the British upper class tourists visiting the area for its salmon fishing at the time. The lodge has a libraby, a grand lounge dripping with atmosphere and quality beds. At the top of Sunndal you can visit a unique nature phenomenon in Norway. Steep mountain hills, moraines and plateaus create a fan shaped river system where five rivers meet, three of them making spectacular waterfalls. Even though this brochure is not for the tourist association cabins, we make an exception for Todalshytta. Todalshytta is a good starting point for rambling, but can also be reached by car and the manager strives to make this the most cultural of the rambler cabins in Norway. The cabin offers sleeping accommodation, dinners and outdoor concerts through the summer. Todalshytta is also part of the legacy from the era of «salmon lords» and the old timber building has its walls and soul intact.

Øksendalsøra has been declared the most preserved village in Møre og Romsdal and is a hidden gem. Fishing, bathing or just strolling around, it’s up to you. From Øksendalsøra you can continue up the valley to Phillipshaugen Lodge and the Eldorado of peak hiking.

KALKSTRANDA IN SURNADAL
The museum garden is family friendly and idyllically placed by Todalsfjorden. A wonderful place to experience a unique botanical garden with abundance of colorful rhododendron, trees and plants from all over the world. Attached you’ll also find a marked footpath, Svinvikrunden, a circuitous walk of 4,6 km suitable for everyone. Walking these roads, you can enjoy great views of Todalsfjorden. By the entrance of the garden lies a charming summertime café selling home baked goods. The rhubarb cake baked by these women alone is well worth the trip! Surnadal has long traditions of lime mining and there is still mining going on right next to the Surnadalsfjord, in direction of Hamnes. The white lime also provides the community with a lovely beach. Locals and visitors alike can now use this spectacular white beach for sunbathing and recreation. There is parking right next to the beach and all necessary facilities are available.

Rindal does not have any fjords, but Igltjønna is a popular place to gather in a sunny day. Tjønna is situated practically in the village and has all necessary facilities for people to spend the day. Rindal Skimuseum is placed just next to it.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES ALONG TROLLHEIMSVEIEN SETERLANDA Today there are three summer farms still running along Trollheimsveien. All these summer farms have their season about the same time as the summer holiday in Norwegian schools. If you’re planning a visit at the end of the season, it could be wise to check availability, as the season will vary a bit with the weather. 23
INNER GAMMELSETRA
Gammelsetra offers courses in traditional summer farming. Young and old can participate in milking, separating, making cheese or grooming the animals. You can also buy fresh produce from the farm. Every year the event “Grøvudalshelg” makes live music and dancing occupy the summer farm well into the night. Turn off the main road at Gjøra and drive to Hallen, at the start of Grøvudalen. From here it’s about a two hour walk in easy terrain along the river. The standard in Vårsøg hotell is slightly above what’s usually expected of a rural hotel: Newly decorated rooms and tasteful communal areas. The hotel is incorporated with the local culture house and is a great starting point for hikes and activities in the area. This museum tells the story of making skis, a craft Rindal is famous for, both as a local traditional craft and on industrial scale. The many skiers who have used these skis are also featured in the exhibition. SURNADALSØRA Surnadalsøra used to be the municipal centre and trading village back in the days when boat transport was key to the area. The houses are closely hugging each other, and are now becoming homes to a growing artist environment with galleries and workshops. Annually there is a market in Øra, filling the road with local crafts work, food and people. The market is usually held in June/July. The holiday and business hotel Sunndalsøra Hotell is situated in the middle of the village with a panorama view of the mighty mountains surrounding Sunndalsøra. Svealia ANS is a family business in Svealia in Upper Surnadal. In Svealia they harvest what the nature provides of herbs and berries. The family also do beekeeping and processing produce by old traditions as well as new methods. It is documented that the area has some of the cleanest air and water in Europe. The farm sells regular honey, and Elisabeth’s herbal honey, developed to cure colds. Elisabeth is trained as a phytotherapist. Phytotherapy is the knowledge of how herbs effect the body. In the summer they offer walks in Svealia including exploring medicinal plants and honey production.

Renndølssetra is found in Innerdalen and are the first buildings you encounter when you reach the valley. The grandfather of today’s manager was possibly the first person in Norway to take actions against damming up the area – and luckily he was heard! At this summer farm you can stay over, participate in the summer farming or buy traditional food. Turn off the main road at Ålvundeid, head towards Innerdal and stay on the road as far as you can. Trædal hotell is placed right where you enter Litjdalen, just outside Sunndalsøra village on the way to Aursjøvegen. This facility gives you the choice of hotel standard, hostel or camping.

Tuppen og Lillemor is a fairy tale story of two farmers’ wives wanting to create their own employment. With great courage and stamina, they have built the business providing locally produced eggs from free roaming chickens. The eggs can be purchased in most of the grocery stores in the area and the women’s pink truck is constantly running supplies.

TRÆDALSSTUENE
Torbuvollen is a detour on Aursjøveien, road access all the way. The summerfarm has cattle and goats and produce sour cream, butter and different cheeses for sale. Cured ham is also for sale. You’ll also be able to buy coffee, “lefse” and lunch, and traditional «rømmegrøt» can be ordered. If you find it too hard to leave the idyllic scene, you’re welcome to put up a tent on the summer farm.
Trædalsstuene is located with Trædal hotell and serves locally sourced food in atmospheric rooms from the heyday of salmon tourism. Dinner must be booked in advance. Trædalsstuene also runs Trædalsstuenes Cafe in Sunndalsøra, serving traditional Norwegian food based on locally sourced produce of great quality. The café is open every day 0900-1700 (Sundays 13-18).

When visiting Todalen, do drop by Wenche and Gudmund in Viastua. Here, you can buy a range of wood products made by Gudmund: Ladles, butter forms and rocking chairs, to mention a few. Wenche bakes traditional “lefse” and “flatbrød” from old recipes and sells hides from their own sheep.
