With the E20 motorway, the Great Belt Bridge and public transport winding its way through the town, we hope you’ll think that our town is the obvious place to meet up with your loved ones. Tour de France As a sport, cycling is the epitome of something inhumanly fascinating: A battle against one another. A battle against time. A battle with the elements.

And in Nyborg, we look forward to welcoming you to the buzzing atmosphere of cheers, a cycling race in a class of its own and Nyborg dressed in yellow when the world’s largest cycling race takes over our town on 2 July 2022! In Denmark, we have been gifted with 3 stages of the Tour de France, with the official start in the world’s best cycling city – Copenhagen. The 2nd stage from Roskilde to Nyborg will be a 202 km long and windy day across Zealand and the Great Belt! In Nyborg, however, we’re more than ready to do our utmost to keep the spirits of both the spectators and the world’s best cyclists high when they finish here!

We’re very much looking forward to being the meeting place for the whole of Denmark and host city for the riot of yellow that will hit us before, during and after the 2nd stage of the Tour de France ends on Storebæltsvej. We have a fantastic programme planned for the days and will of course ensure that the whole city exudes a party atmosphere! But before the world’s fastest sprinters have the opportunity to show the other riders who’s boss on the 2.7 km long stretch from the west bridge’s exit to the finish line, a long and exciting stage awaits, where the wind on the Great Belt Bridge can play a decisive role in the classification. The chances of a spectacular crosswind drama are extremely high on the short 18 km stretch from Korsør to Nyborg, where the riders will be exposed to the wind. So come and join us for an absolute blast when the world’s biggest cycle race – Tour de France – comes to Funen with our historic town as its destination.

The Tour de France in Nyborg is once in a lifetime occasion – and EVERYONE has the opportunity to volunteer and become part of the team behind this summer’s mega event. Some tasks require muscle, others demand good organisational skills, and yet others that you have a great sense of humour and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves. Whatever the task, the aim of all volunteers is to make the Tour de France a humdinger of a yellow people’s party. All volunteers will receive a clothing pack and meals.

On 11 June 2022, 16,000 amateur cyclists will have the opportunity to take part in the Tour de Storebælt, whatever their cycling background or equipment. It will be a historic experience – not least the opportunity to cycle over the Great Belt Bridge.

The Tour de Storebælt is an amateur bike race to mark Denmark’s historic hosting of the first three stages of the Tour de France 2022 – also known as the Grand Départ. Come and take part in the biggest official side event of the Grand Départ Copenhagen Denmark 2022, when Nyborg provides the setting for an almighty celebration for participants and spectators alike.

Did you know that.. A cyclist burns approx. 130,000 calories on the entire Tour, which is equivalent to 252 double cheeseburgers?

Outdoor Activities

An outdoor adventure without equal awaits you if you’re planning to experience the outdoor activities that Nyborg and East Funen have to offer. Here, outdoor is synonymous with water activities below and above the waves, angling, cycling, hiking and much more besides. In Nyborg, we have more than 45 kilometres of coastline, where you’ll find some of Funen’s best beaches. And the Great Belt is sure to entice you to enjoy a cooling swim on a hot summer’s day and an icy dip in the winter. Above the surface, however, Nyborg is also a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, where you have every opportunity to experience the Great Belt in a kayak, on an SUP board and as a windsurfer when the wind really picks up. And if you’re curious about life under the sea, the Great Belt offers several exciting diving areas. If you’re into angling, the Great Belt is brimming with fish! And no matter whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, you’re always in with a good chance of landing a good catch, whether you’re fishing for sea trout, cod, flatfish, mackerel or something else entirely. And quite unique to Nyborg is the opportunity to fish for pike in selected parts of our moat system. There are many cycle routes in and around Nyborg, which take you to the coast, woodland and market town idyll. Whether you want to enjoy nature on a cosy bike ride with the family or race on an MTB, you’ll find everything you need for a fantastic cycling holiday in our East Funen kingdom. And if you need to pump your tyres, fill your water bottle or perhaps even borrow a puncture kit or a toilet, our Bike Friends are there to help. If you love exploring, Nyborg’s numerous walks have been put together in such a way as to guarantee that there’s a route to suit you. Along the Knudshoved peninsula between the Great Belt and the fjord, you can explore Nyborg Nature Reserve overlooking the lighthouse and the Great Belt Bridge. And if you’re into historical walks, you can step into the Middle Ages on the hilly ramparts at Nyborg Slot and explore the battlefield of the Swedish War in 1658 on the outskirts of Nyborg.

CYCLING HOLIDAYS All roads lead to Nyborg! That’s how it’s been for 1,000 years – and it still is to this day. Whether you arrive via national cycle route 8, you cycle across Funen via route 6 or you choose one of the many other Funen cycle routes, Nyborg is at the heart of them all. No matter what your level of keenness when it comes to cycling, Nyborg and East Funen offer fantastic and very different cycle routes, both for the whole family and for those looking to break a sweat. So, if you have your road bike, mountain bike or gravel bike with you, we have lots of challenging tracks and routes where the contour lines and the number of kilometres will definitely get your heart rate up. Are you a big fan of the Tour de France and fancy having a go at the 2.6–2.7 km long home strait, along which the world’s best cyclists will be sprinting against one another in Nyborg on 2 July 2022? Well, now’s your chance to cycle over the finish line ahead of the Tour elite. If a somewhat more sedate pace is what you’re after because you want to be able to take in everything from the coast and forest to art, castles, ancient monuments and cosy breweries, East Funen promises great experiences for the whole family. CYCLING TRAILS We’ve made it easy for you to jump on your bike and explore the East Funen countryside. We have cycling trails of various lengths and different themes, which you can download directly to your phone or bike computer. They all provide detailed information such as elevation, stretches on gravel and much more besides.

BIKE FRIENDS AND BIKESTATIONS If you need to pump your tyres, fill your water bottle – or maybe even borrow a puncture kit or use the toilet – just follow the red Bike Friends signs. There’s always help to be had here from our good cycling friends when you do. You’ll also find a number of Bike Stations, where you can adjust your bike with the bike service station’s tools.

HIKES AND WALKS Nyborg has several large areas of natural beauty where you can enjoy the peace and quiet, and the changing seasons. The landscapes are characterised by their expansive fields, hedgerows and impressive manors and estates with their own grounds, many of which are open to the public. With its varied landscape, East Funen is a gem for those who like to explore. Town or country, you can travel short distances or cover many kilometres. The numerous walks can be adapted to give you the route that suits you. Along the Knudshoved peninsula between the Great Belt and the fjord, you can explore the nature reserve overlooking the lighthouse and the Great Belt Bridge. You can also step back in time at Nyborg Slot and on the picturesque ramparts.

Take your family to Strandhøj park and playground. The 16 hectares of parkland and gardens, situated on the coast of the Great Belt, offer sensory experiences for people of all ages. THE BEST BEACHES ON THE GREAT BELT Nyborg offers more than 45 kilometres of coastline, including some of the best beaches on Funen. Here, you’re guaranteed clean water and great surroundings for a fun or relaxing walk on the beach, with stunning views of the Great Belt Bridge from several vantage points. The coast of East Funen is perfect for wind and kite surfing, SUP, diving or sea kayaking. The Great Belt invites relaxation, activities and experiences above and beneath the waves.

BLUE FLAG BEACHES There are four Blue Flag beaches in and around Nyborg. The Blue Flag is a certification scheme that lets you know you’re on a beach where the water is clean and there is lifesaving and first aid equipment as well as information boards and more besides.

DOG WOODS

There are three dog woods in Nyborg, where you can let your dog off the lead. The dog must always be under control and must not be a nuisance to other visitors to the wood and beach. Dogs can also run freely on our blue flag beaches from 1 October to 31 March.

ANGLING Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, the Great Belt is a great place for angling or spearfishing. Along the entire coast in Nyborg, you’ll find countless angling spots where you can cast your line. The chances of reeling in a catch in the Great Belt are high, whether you’re fishing for sea trout, cod, flatfish, mackerel or something else entirely. At Knudshoved, you can fish from both the coast and jetties, and you’ll always meet others with bait on their hook. If luck is not on your side, you can make your way to Nyborg Marina and see the cutters return with the day’s catch – so you may still be able to bring some fresh fish home with you.

Here, you have the opportunity to both embrace the quiet town life and to meet with friends and family to enjoy everything from historical sights to contemporary attractions. The Land gate and Nyborg Castle welcome you If you wish to follow the original road into the heart of Nyborg, the route through Landporten is the one you should choose. And before the mighty gate gives you access to our royal town, you should be sure to take note of just how extensive the fortifications’ entrance to Nyborg town centre actually is, when the darkness in Denmark’s longest barrel vault makes you focus on the light at the end of the gate. From this side of the royal town, the castle welcomes you – the royal castle in Denmark, where the first constitution was signed, where the first female regent was a regular visitor and where the king chose to settle permanently in 1525, making Nyborg the country’s first capital. If you’re a fan of everything from castles and manor houses to all things maritime, we invite you in to a wide range of exciting attractions, where you follow in the footsteps of the Middle Ages on our grand ramparts, encounter Renaissance life at Borgmestergården and in the stately rooms and beautiful manor grounds where Hans Christian Andersen himself drew inspiration. If you want to get right up close to one of the world’s longest bridges – the Great Belt Bridge – you can experience it both from land and sea.

NYBORG CASTLE Slotsgade 34, 5800 Nyborg

There’s no getting away from the significant role Nyborg Slot has played in the history of Denmark. The castle was founded under the reign of Valdemar Sejr (1202–41) in around 1200. It was built at one of the kingdom’s most important hubs, by the crossing through and across the Great Belt – at the heart of the kingdom of Denmark. Both routes could be monitored and controlled from the tower on Nyborg Slot. By virtue of its central location, Nyborg Slot was chosen as the meeting place for the so-called Danehof, the country’s legislative and judicial assembly. Here, the king met with representatives of the church, the nobility and the people. The Danehof was the parliament of that time and Nyborg Slot served as the medieval Christiansborg in the days of the itinerant court or travelling kingdom. In fact, the kingdom’s first constitution was signed at Nyborg Slot in 1282, and a Danehof was held there until 1413. A little over 100 a century later, in 1525, Nyborg became the permanent residence of the king, and both the castle and the town underwent extensive expansion to render them befitting of the Renaissance king of Protestant Europe’s largest kingdom. The unique cultural heritage of the castle must be protected, disseminated and made accessible. Nyborg Slot is therefore currently under restoration and closed to visitors. Experience the castle’s majestic walls and towers by taking a walk along the preserved ramparts behind the castle.

BORGMESTERGÅRDEN Slotsgade 11, 5800 Nyborg

Within walking distance of Nyborg Slot is the beautiful half-timbered building, Borgmestergården (the mayor’s house), built in 1601 by mayor and merchant Mads Lerche. The building houses a museum that focuses on life at a wealthy merchant’s house during the Renaissance, presented with children in mind. In 2022, there will be a special exhibition on cycling history to mark the arrival of the Tour de France in Nyborg. The free town and castle walks start at Borgmestergården.

THE WATER TOWER Møllebakken 10, 5800 Nyborg

The water tower from 1899 is an example of the industrial building of the day. It is unique in that the water installations are largely intact. Art exhibitions are held in the water tower throughout the year.

THE LAND GATE Lindealleen 1, 5800 Nyborg

Landporten (the land gate) in Nyborg dates back to the mid-16th century, when it was built by Christian III. The purpose of Landporten was to protect Nyborg and at the same time create a road through the town so that the greatness of the king could be seen in Nyborg Castle, among other places. Up until 1869, Landporten was the only public access road to Nyborg.

Nyborg was a strategically important fortress town for some 700 years. Large sections of the ramparts have been preserved and restored. Go for a walk in the unique historic surroundings of Nyborg Vold ramparts and see the impressive cannons that once protected Nyborg. Experience the big cannons being fired when Nyborg salutes the summer.

Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady) is located in the heart of Nyborg on the old town square. Appearance-wise, the church today is a classic Gothic church. Construction of the church began in the late 14th century under Queen Margrethe I, back when the Danehof was held at Nyborg Slot. It was completed in 1428, when it was consecrated to Our Lady, Mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary. The beautiful medieval church houses a wealth of items from all periods of the church’s history. In the centre of the church hangs the Gothic chancel crucifix, which is as old as the church itself, and the latest items are the altar crucifix (2011) and the altar window (2015), created by Danish artist Maja Lisa Engelhardt, with its tree of life symbols inspired by the chancel crucifix, with the sprouts of eternal life at the edge. The resurrection motif in the tree of life crucifix on the altar continues up into the branches of the altar window, reaching up and across the windowpane, and which together with the light in the iridescent glass mosaic symbolises the sprouts of eternal life. The glass mosaic has been mounted in the frame of the original window, uniting old and new in the most beautiful way. Opening hours: June–August 10.00–18.00 Other months 10.00–16.00. Nyborg Marina is scenically situated at the end of Nyborg Fjord with 620 berths divided between several exciting areas close to the town centre. The area around the marina offers play facilities for children, barbecues, modern toilet facilities, a pleasant harbour promenade and much more besides. CASTLES & MANORS The king and the king’s vassal lived at the main castle, Nyborg Castle. The most important ministers also had their estates and manor houses on the island of Funen. The king’s war minister, for example, lived at Egeskov Castle, and the prime minister at Hesselagergård. These are just three out of 123 manor houses on Funen, more than 10 of which are located in east Funen. The fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen was a frequent guest at the castles and manors of Funen, where he drew inspiration for his stories, which can still provide us with answers to some of life’s big questions. THE GREAT BELT BRIDGE Hjejlevej 107, 5800 Nyborg

The Great Belt is, and has always been, a vital connection in Denmark. Back in the Middle Ages, King Valdemar the Great built fortresses in Nyborg, Korsør and on the island of Sprogø to protect the Great Belt and the traffic that regularly crossed it against hostility. Today – more than 800 years later – the Great Belt is still an important hub for infrastructure in Denmark, where the construction of the 18 km long Great Belt connection, which, with its two bridges and a tunnel, connects Denmark and makes our country smaller than in the decades when ferries and queueing in the ferry berths was all part of the routine when travelling across the Belt. Ever since the royal family’s Krone 2 Daimler inaugurated the Great Belt Bridge by breaking the red-and-white ribbon across the motorway on the East Bridge in June 1998, the permanent link across the Great Belt has made a huge difference to our social and cultural ways of meeting and being together. We no longer have to plan ahead when we need to cross the Belt. Now, we get from Korsør to Nyborg and vice versa in less than 15 minutes by train or by car. Nyborg in yellow! This summer, the Great Belt Bridge and Nyborg will play a key role in the start of Tour de France 2022. So, are you a big fan of the Tour de France and fancy having a go at the 2.7 km long home strait, along which the world’s best cyclists will be sprinting against one another in Nyborg on 2 July 2022? Yes? Well, then you can jump on your bike now and do battle with the end of the 2nd stage before the tour arrives. The home stretch runs from the exit of the west bridge to the finishing line on Storebæltsvej.

VIEWPOINT BY THE GREAT BELT BRIDGE Enjoy the view over the Great Belt and experience the Great Belt Bridge at close range from the viewpoint, where you can stand around 2 metres beneath the unique construction and experience the bridge from a different but impressive angle. Drive out along Hjejlevej and park at the end of the road or at Monarch. From here, you have to walk the last 500 or so metres to the viewpoint under the Great Belt Bridge.

EVENTS In Nyborg, it is something of a tradition of ours to hold fun events for children and adults of all ages all year round. You probably remember it yourself if you ever visited Denmark as a child? Perhaps you were on a camping holiday, a cycling holiday or a weekend trip to another city that featured events that you can still remember? And which you might want to pass on? Here in Nyborg, we’ve gone to great lengths to put together a number of experiences for the whole family! Experiences that contain everything you need to take happy memories home with you from our town. We have, among other things, followed in the footsteps of King Christian III and pay homage to the authentic medieval spirit that has been brought to life in the restoration of Nyborg Torv, so that now – as then – we have plenty of space to welcome all parts of Denmark to major historic markets and jousting tournaments – to the Danehof festival and Christmas in the ancient royal town. If you visit Nyborg on the evening of Common Prayer Day, you can both experience our four 18-pound cannons firing from the Queen’s Bastion – where they stand just as they did when the fortress closed in 1869 – and take a look inside the water tower, where a number of artists will be exhibiting their works from Common Prayer Day to late summer. If you like sailing, you have the opportunity to experience the Great Belt, see Nyborg from the water and get right up close to the Great Belt Bridge’s impressive architecture. If you’d like to paddle yourself, a canoe trip along our medieval moat is just the thing for you, and you can listen to stories about the moat at the same time. And while we’re on the town’s historic events, you’re welcome to follow “Tappenstregen”, when our soldiers are called home to the barracks from the town’s beer taverns. The march takes you through our old streets, and together we visit the drinking haunts of the soldiers.

It is 125 years since the building, which today houses Nyborg’s culture house, was built. This will be celebrated with the ‘ANNO 1897’ festival, which takes place on 7 and 8 May. The season kicks off with a major joint exhibition, at which a number of artists will be exhibiting one or more works. From 13 May to late summer, there will be a succession of changing exhibitions, when individual artists will be using the unique setting of the water tower to exhibit their works. Take a bus ride around the castles and estates of East Funen. The tour takes you past 12 impressive castles and estates as well as a number of other historic sites. It includes a guided tour of Ørbæklunde by the lord of the manor himself. Usually closed to the public, Ørbæklunde is being opened quite uniquely for participants on this tour. The tour also includes a light lunch and coffee and cake – locally produced on East Funen, of course! There are a limited number of tours and tickets for this unique experience.

In celebration of the fact that the Tour de France is coming to Nyborg in summer 2022, the museum tells us about 150 years of cycling history, about freedom, sport and everyday life on two wheels. Seven Funen bicycles, each with their own cool history, have been selected and show that cycling is an integral part of life on East Funen. The exhibition is at Borgmestergården from 9 April to 31 October.

THE TATTOO

The tattoo is an old military ceremony to the accompaniment of music. The ceremony dates back to the mid-18th century and was used in most Danish garrison towns to call the soldiers home from beer taverns and canteens to their quarters and barracks. This practice has also been used in other European cities. The melody, which characterises the tradition, is said to originate from an English folk song from 1720.

Christian III (1536–1559) often spent Christmas in Nyborg. The aroma of firewood, spruce, roasted meat and spiced cakes would permeate the town as an unmistakable sign that the usual Christmas preparations were in full swing. We still celebrate Christmas in the ancient royal town with a large Christmas market in Nyborg’s authentic historical setting. The town buzzes with life and energy, just as if preparations were under way for the king’s big Christmas party. A host of stalls, activities, experiences and events are to be found throughout the town in the first and second weekends of December.

The site has playgrounds, bouncy castles, beach volleyball, pétanque, dwarf goats, free boat winches, cabin rental and a kiosk.
