What’s New? By Greg Horton
The speed at which new development is happening in Oklahoma City is dizzying, even for locals. For visitors, there can be a “new city” feeling every time you visit. Here’s a quick list of just a few of the new attractions, shopping and dining options in OKC that have popped up in the last year.
RIVERSPORT Rapids One of the most exciting developments to come to OKC in 2016 is the RIVERSPORT Rapids whitewater rafting and kayaking center in the Boathouse District. This $45 million facility opened last May, playing host to the U.S. Olympic trials for canoe/kayak slalom. Purchase a day pass and enjoy whitewater rapids for ages 8 and up. There’s a river boarding and tubing area also available, as well as dining options at Big Water Grill. Hours of operation are limited October through March, so be sure to check out www.riversportokc.org for the latest schedule.

The Criterion
4
The metro’s newest live music venue, The Criterion, is located in east Bricktown. This 4,000-capacity theater makes Oklahoma City a hot destination for independent music fans. The owners partnered with Live Nation to guarantee the venue has access to A-list acts from every genre of indie music at the regional and national level.
Located in a former Ford Motor Company Model T assembly plant, the 135-room boutique hotel is the sixth in the 21c portfolio and by far the largest. Like their other concepts, this one features outstanding dining, a vibrant bar scene and a world-class art museum. Located at 21c, Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge brings upscale casual dining to the western edge of the urban core. The menu features classic American cuisine with chef-driven flair, from downhome favorites like okra and cornbread to seafood specialties, chops and charcuterie.

Wheeler Ferris Wheel Towering over the south shore of the Oklahoma River just west of downtown, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel is a new attraction with a storied past. It started its life on the famed Santa Monica pier, but now it treats visitors to a stunning view of downtown OKC from 100 feet up. Single rides or day passes are available.
Chisolm Creek
www.VisitOKC.com
On the city’s northern edge, Chisolm Creek is home to an array of dining, shopping and recreation options, with more to come throughout 2017. It’s anchored by Topgolf, a golf entertainment complex with games, dining and drinking options that can be enjoyed by beginners and seasoned veterans alike. Cabela’s is next door and has an indoor archery range, café, some amazing taxidermy and, of course, some great shopping for outdoor enthusiasts. And nearby is iFLY Indoor Skydiving, which provides a super fun solution for those interested in skydiving but not so interested in actually jumping out of a plane. Enjoy the experience of freefalling in a completely safe environment. All the gear is provided, and they even have family packages.

In this case, the name says it all – this district is full of adventure for the whole family. From the can’tmiss National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, to the rush of live horseracing at Remington Park, to visiting Oklahoma City’s wildest residents at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, there’s plenty of fun for the young and young at heart.
Make friends with the animal kingdom at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Experience the thrill of scientific discovery at Science Museum Oklahoma.
You can feed giraffes at the Giraffe Feeding Platform or Lorikeets at Explorikeet Adventures, and you can touch stingrays at Stingray Bay.
Kids of all ages will love exploring eight acres of handson science experiences with thousands of space, aviation and cultural artifacts in the mix. This is especially true in the “CurioCity” exhibit, a 20,000-square-foot area of discovery that uses interactive devices and creative settings to encourage learning through play.
Sample Oklahoma City’s Western heritage at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. In addition to its world-class art and exhibits, this museum is also home to Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-thecentury cattle town.

Asian DISTRICT
Film R
Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific.
Grab a bowl of pho. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Favorites with the locals include Pho Cuong and Pho Lien Hoa. Eat beyond Asia.

Want to experience an up-and-coming district right in the heart of downtown? Equal parts historic and revitalized, Film Row was once home to the film distribution offices for Hollywood’s major studios. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more.
Grab a bite at one of OKC’s family-owned eateries. Located at the corner of Sheridan and Shartel avenues, Caeli’s Sweets, Eats & Bar offers sandwiches and sweets all made fresh. Grab a slice of pizza at Joey’s Pizzeria or plan for a nice dinner at one of the newest restaurants to hit Film Row, Mary Eddy’s at 21C Museum Hotel. We highly suggest their charcuterie board! Relive the rad ‘80s at Flashback RetroPub. With its vintage arcade games, Rubik’s Cube cocktail tables and ‘80s-themed karaoke, you’ll feel like you’ve gone “Back to the Future” at OKC’s only ‘80s-themed bar. Enjoy a drink and take on Mario, Donkey Kong, Qbert or any of the more than 30 arcade games. Leg warmers and Hammer pants are optional.
Get your kicks on Route 66.
Check out Oklahoma art.
Along old Route 66 stands the 1930s Milk Bottle Building, one of Route 66’s most iconic buildings. The 350-square foot triangular building sits across Classen Boulevard and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Contemporary art is at the heart of the 21c Museum Hotel experience with rotating exhibitions and cultural programming, and it’s always free even if you’re not staying the night. The misting steel tree welcomes you as you arrive, and penguins are everywhere in sight.
www.VisitOKC.com
The district’s culinary influences travel far beyond Asian cuisine. Be sure to visit Cafe Kacao for a Guatemalan-style brunch. Or grab a cup of joe and a vegetarian meal from The Red Cup, another café that perfectly captures the bohemian and ecclectic vibe of this district.

Located north of downtown along Broadway Avenue, the Automobile Alley district was originally home to the city’s car dealerships, a fact that is immortalized in the neon signs that still hang from its original buildings. The past and the present combine to make this district effortlessly cool with lots to offer, including some of Oklahoma City’s best shopping, dining and nightlife.

Bring your appetite to one of the local restaurants. HillBilly’s brings a sophisticated twist to its po’boy sandwich, and its bar is a haven for moonshine lovers everywhere (all of their cocktails are moonshine-based). For a refined take on the urban chophouse concept, Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse offers woodfired meats and handcrafted cocktails. Wet your whistle with whiskey or wine. For wine lovers, Waters Edge Winery offers more than 50 different locally-made wines from the world’s finest grapes. You can even create, bottle, cork and label your own private vintage to commemorate your visit. For stronger libations, check out Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar.
Y
Sidecar offers beer and wine on tap, single-malt scotch and local house cocktails. And with bar food that consists of smoked salmon, gourmet paninis and fresh hummus, you can count on this bar to elevate your happy hour to the next level. Treat yourself to a souvenir at one of the local shops. Be sure to visit The Factory, an upscale clothing boutique; SHOP GOOD, a philanthropic-minded shop offering jewelry, clothing and gifts; PLENTY Mercantile, a sustainably-focused shop that offers a variety of goods; and Rawhide, a luxury ranch lifestyle store with everything from boots to custom furniture.

D I S T R I C T Get on the water with a RIVERSPORT Adventure Pass.
Enjoy an aquatic adventure at the RIVERSPORT Rapids. In May 2016, OKC’s newest state-of-the-art whitewater rafting and kayaking facility opened offering both family fun and elite athlete training. Lower flow channels offer great family rafting and kayaking experiences, and
Climb to new heights on the SandRidge Sky Trail. This 80-foot structure is the tallest adventure course of its kind in the world. With six levels of challenges, the higher you climb, the harder it gets! From the top, you can speed down the 72-foot Sky Slide – America’s tallest dry slide – or free fall from the Rumble Drop. The Sky Trail also includes the SandRidge Sky Zip, a 700-foot zip line across the Oklahoma River and back.

Whether you want to train like an Olympian or just have some fun, the Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River is a hotspot for outdoor recreation. Located within walking distance of the Bricktown Entertainment District, it’s the official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/kayak and hosts numerous regattas throughout the year.
This day pass will allow you to sample all the activities offered at the Boathouse District, including rafting, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and more. The Boathouse District also offers more than 13 miles of paved trails for running, walking or cycling for those who prefer to stay on land.
the higher flow channels allow Olympic whitewater athletes the chance to train in Oklahoma City. No matter your athletic ability, this course is a must-do OKC experience.

Bricktown
E N T E R TA I N M E N T D I S T R I C T Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, this former warehouse district is filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. From taking a cruise along the Bricktown Canal to catching an Oklahoma City Dodger’s game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown is a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. And just north of Bricktown is historic Deep Deuce, where you can find more great restaurants and nightlife options.
As one of Bricktown’s newest attractions, Brickopolis is amping up the district’s level of family-friendly fun by offering miniature golf, laser tag, arcade games and multiple dining options.
districts
Schedule a play date at Brickopolis.
Enjoy a night out on the town. Bricktown has plenty of nightlife options, but we recommend the rock-and-roll dueling pianos of Michael Murphy’s. Part concert, part comedy roast, this show is sure to have you rolling with laughter and tapping your toes to the requestdriven music. Cruise the mile-long Bricktown Canal on a Bricktown Water Taxi. This 40-minute trip is the perfect way to tour through Bricktown, from the eastern edge of downtown all the way to the northern edge of the Oklahoma River. All taxis are staffed by ambassadors that narrate points of interest along the way and give a feel for the unique history and culture of the area. Explore Deep Deuce like a local.
www.VisitOKC.com
The Deep Deuce District, located just north of Bricktown, was the heart of Oklahoma City’s African-American neighborhood in the 1920s and 30s, and during that time the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both called Deep Deuce home, as did Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like WSKY Lounge, a whisky club offering more than 250 bottles of whisky and almost 400 spirits. Other local favorites include Slaughter’s Hall, Leaf+Bean, Belle Kitchen, Urban Johnnie’s and Anchor Down, which is a gourmet corn dog eatery (yes, we said gourmet) located in a shipping container. Trust us, it is worth trying.

Uptown 23rd Midtown On the northern edge of downtown and just west of Automobile Alley, the Midtown district connects the hustle and bustle of downtown with the stately historic neighborhoods to its north. With a mix of local restaurants, neighborhood pubs and unique shops, it’s a great place to experience the best of OKC’s recent urban renaissance.
Grab a cup of joe at Elemental. Elemental Coffee Roasters imports and roasts some of the finest coffees available and serves them at its coffee shop, which offers a full menu of espresso-based drinks, brewed coffee and fresh food. Be sure to pay a visit during the weekend to sample its delicious brunch menu. Strike out at Dust Bowl. This 12-lane bowling alley harkens back to the heyday of bowling with its retro-inspired décor (think wood paneling and shag carpets). Located below Fassler Hall, you can bowl a few frames and then walk upstairs to enjoy beers and brats at this German-inspired beer garden. If you enjoy the vintage-bar vibe, take a short walk and pay a visit to R&J’s Supper Club as well. Find food truck fare at Bleu Garten.
Do some serious dining. Restaurant options are abundant in Uptown, from fast casual to more upscale. Visit Pizzeria Gusto for authentic Neapolitan pizza from a wood-fired oven. The Drake offers upscale family-style seafood platters. For more of an eclectic menu (and one filled with Phish/ Grateful Dead references), Guyutes offers elevated street food drawing inspiration from a wide range of cuisine styles. Fill up (your glass) at The Pump Bar. The Pump Bar began life in 1929 as a Texaco service station. It’s now one of the hippest new places to grab a drink in OKC. Be sure to venture out back to the gaming area to make new friends over a game of cornhole. Test your puzzle-solving skills. Think you’re a whiz at solving mysteries? Test your chops at The Escape OKC, a live-escape game where you have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles and mysteries of a locked room. The easiest game room has a 38 percent escape rate, so good luck. You’ll probably need it.
www.VisitOKC.com
With a rotating schedule of food trucks, you’ll never get tired of the cuisine at Bleu Garten. Its open-air dining includes lawn games, a fire pit, a full-service bar and several large TVs, making it a great place to catch a Thunder game during basketball season.
Uptown is gaining quite the local reputation as a fun, easy place to dine, shop and drink. The attractions are casual, very accessible and are largely owned by local proprietors.

ARTS DISTRICT

Known for its eclectic art galleries (many attached to working artists’ studios) and shops, as well as its distinctive Spanish Revival architecture, the Paseo Arts District has a bohemian vibe that’s great for exploring on foot. Situated around a curvy, tree-lined street, Paseo is home to more than 80 artists, plus shops, bars and restaurants.
Embrace your inner artist. Whether you want to add to your art collection or brush up on your own artistic skills, this district will act as your muse and provide all the inspiration you need. Rub elbows with the locals at the Paseo’s bars and restaurants. Paseo is surrounded by neighborhoods on all sides, so it makes sense that this district offers some of Oklahoma City’s favorite local hangouts. Be sure to check out the Red Rooster Bar,
Picasso Cafe and the Other Room, just to name a few. Explore Paseo during the First Friday Gallery Walk. Want to experience the best the district has to offer, all at the same time? First Friday Gallery Walk happens (you guessed it) on the first Friday (6-10 p.m.) of each month. Art receptions, discounts at restaurants and shops and a fun street scene await at one of the oldest art walks in Oklahoma City.
districts
Plaza DISTRICT Sample some of the best craft beer in Oklahoma. Oak & Oar lives up to its slogan of “Craft Beer and Craft Fare” by keeping 36 always-rotating Oklahoma beers on tap. When combined with its selection of unique appetizers, salads and hearty knife-and-fork sandwiches, you’ve got a dining experience that can’t be beat. Go for brunch and try their Banana Bread French Toast infused with ginger and clove honey. Satisfy your sweet tooth. It doesn’t get much better than Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, a food truck turned permanent
establishment that scoops up the best salted caramel ice cream in existence (in our humble opinion). Roxy’s Ice Cream pairs nicely with the nearby Pie Junkie’s tasty options. Buy pie by the slice or get the whole thing – we won’t judge. Shop for the perfect OKC t-shirt and other only-in-OKC gifts. Check out the t-shirt selection at Tree & Leaf or the affordable art and locally-sourced clothing, accessories and gifts at DNA Galleries or Collected Thread.
www.VisitOKC.com
If you’re the sort that likes to check out the hip and happening, you’ll find it in the Plaza District; an enclave of locally-owned shops, neighborhood bars, quirky galleries and fun-and-funky restaurants. Named for the historic Plaza Theater (built in 1935), the area has become a hub for creativity and a magnet for local businesses. Its namesake theater is now the nationally-renowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre, where you can catch live performances in season.

Eat like a ranch hand at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse.
Find some proper cowboy duds.
The oldest continually-operating restaurant in Oklahoma City and a nationally-known Stockyards City staple, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been visited by presidents, movie stars, pro athletes and music icons, among others. It’s worth a visit for a delicious steak, some everpopular lamb fries and a thick slice of coconut cream pie. If you’re out and about early, they serve one of the hardiest (and best) breakfasts in town as well.
Explore the vast selection of boots, hats, pearl snaps and more at Langston’s Western Wear. There are also custom-made boots and more at Little Joe’s Boots and custom hats at Shorty’s Caboy Hattery. Tap your toes to live music at the Rodeo Opry. If country music is your jam, then attend one of the shows at the Rodeo Opry along Exchange Avenue. This family-friendly venue serves up live tunes every Saturday night.

Western AVENUE From upscale to accessible, contemporary to antique, the Western Avenue district has a little bit of everything. From the local dives on Western avenue to the chic shops along Classen Curve, this district has you covered for shopping and eating.
Explore Classen Curve.
Hunt for vintage and vinyl.
Some of OKC’s most fashionable shops are in the Classen Curve shopping area along Western Avenue between Northwest Grand Boulevard and Classen Boulevard. National retailers include lululemon athletica, Anthropologie and West Elm.
If curated treasure hunting is more your style, visit one of Western Avenue’s many antique stores, like Antique Avenue. Western Avenue is also home to Guestroom Records, which sells new and old vinyl albums for your listening pleasure.
Shop local.
If all the shopping Classen Curve has to offer gives you an appetite, dine at RePUBlic Gastropub, Upper Crust Pizza or Café 501 while you’re there. Along Western, Deep Fork Grill, The Drum Room and Musashi’s all have creative menus that are sure to please your palate.
www.VisitOKC.com
Classen Curve has lots of local retailers too, like Balliet’s, On a Whim and Liberté. Outside Classen Curve, there are local favorites like Weldon Jack, which is part old-school barbershop and part hip retailer with art, apparel, motorcycle gear and grooming products.
Dine Local.

Iconic OKC
A full-fledged visit to OKC isn’t complete without a trip to these uniquely-OKC destinations.
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Dale Chihuly glass sculptures in the world, including the 55-foot Eleanor Blake Kirkpatrick Memorial Tower in the atrium of the museum. More works can be seen in the permanent exhibit, which is full of colorful glass and drawings. Chihuly is widely heralded as the most important artist working in glass since Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the museum’s collection represents more than three decades of his finest work. Be sure to take a selfie when you’re in the hall of Chihuly glass — it’s the perfect backdrop.

If you’ve never been inside the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, or it has been years since your last visit, it’s definitely worth a stop. Last year the Memorial went through a $10 million renovation upgrading the museum with state-of-the-art technology, hands-on exhibits and new displays of artifacts. Detailed information on the investigation as well as the trails of evidence that were left behind are all a part of the new enhancements. Also added to the museum is a 40foot glass overlook creating a seamless connection between the museum and the memorial outside.

Eat Lamb Fries at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse A trip to OKC isn’t complete without trying the lamb fries at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, Oklahoma City’s oldest continuously operated restaurant. A specialty at Cattlemen’s, they’ve been frying them up for more than 100 years, feeding the faces of movie stars, rodeo legends and politicians such as Ronald Regan and George H.W. Bush.
Chow Down on an Onion Burger The fried onion burger is an Oklahoma original, created in the 1920s by frugal chefs that used shredded onions pressed into their patties as a way to make their beef stretch farther. Today it’s just a delicious OKC staple. Ask a local where to grab one and chances are they will tell you Tucker’s Onion Burgers. There, you can get a single, a double or, if you dare, triple the beef with the Mother Tucker. Each comes with a mound of perfectly caramelized onions and your choice of additional toppings.

A Night (and a day) on the town by Greg Horton
You can talk about nightlife all you want, but the truth is the city offers fun all day long. Whether you want to spend a day with your girlfriends, tour Oklahoma City’s excellent breweries or spend a romantic day together, we have adventures aplenty.
nightlife
Girls Outing A day with girlfriends should start with brunch, and you can find Saturday and Sunday options in several areas of the city. For a modern take on Italian, try Stella Modern Italian’s Sunday brunch. Located in the heart of Midtown, brunch at Stella puts you within a few blocks of Bricktown, Deep Deuce, Downtown and Uptown 23rd. On Saturdays, pop over to downtown for Kitchen 324’s unique culinary options beginning at 7 a.m.—not that you want to be up that early. If you are farther north, West on Western also has Saturday and Sunday brunch, or you can split the difference and hit the oyster bar at The Drake in Uptown 23rd. West on Western puts you close to Memorial Road, an area with dozens of shops, Quail Springs Mall, and Topgolf, and it’s only 15 minutes from downtown.
Shopping districts are located all over Oklahoma City, so if malls are not your thing, hit up the
Midtown shopping includes stationery, clothing, gifts and art. Explore Black Scintilla for women’s clothing, accessories, gifts and home décor, and then pop over to Automobile Alley for an amazing assortment of stuff you never knew you needed at Plenty Mercantile or Urbane. Here, too, you will find two excellent bars, one at Broadway 10 and the other across the street at Sidecar. Before the big night of fun, head up to Vast on the 49th floor of the Devon Tower for an amazing view of Oklahoma City and surrounding areas. Grab a cocktail at the bar while you enjoy the view, or take a table in the lounge. The wine list is outstanding, too, and the menu is overseen by Oklahoma’s most decorated chef, Kurt Fleischfreser. If it’s dancing you’re after, the locals still swear by Groovy’s. Their mixture of rock, pop, hip-hop, country and R&B makes for an eclectic crowd and a wonderfully casual atmosphere.
www.VisitOKC.com
After a mimosa (or wine) brunch, head to the spa for pampering. Udander downtown is one of Oklahoma City’s most elegant spas. If you plan your day right, you can brunch at Kitchen 324 and walk across the street to Udander, which features a full range of spa services, including facials, massage, sauna, and skin treatments. One of the best features about Udander is the quiet elegance; even the atmosphere and décor are relaxing.
shops at Classen Curve. The shopping center on the Curve is one of OKC’s most striking modern architectural developments, and you can choose from national, regional and local brands: lululemon, Anthropologie, Impeccable Pig, Balliets and more. You really don’t even need to leave the Curve, as you can find lunch or happy hour cocktails at RePUBlic Gastropub.

nightlife
Beer Tour Believe it or not, Oklahoma City is home to a number of excellent breweries. Several of them offer brewery tours, and many of our local bars and pubs carry a great selection of local brews. You can start on either side of town, and please Uber your way across the city if you don’t have a designated driver. If you start on Memorial on the north edge of the city, visit Chisholm Creek. There you’ll find RePUBlic Gastropub, a local eatery that keeps more than 300 beers on hand, including 100 on tap. From there, head south to Plaza District. Oak & Ore features one of the city’s largest selections of local beers. The no-nonsense décor makes it possible to focus on what matters— the beer.
www.VisitOKC.com
Midtown is the next stop. McNellie’s Public House carries approximately 350 beers. Yes, 350, and dozens of those are on tap. The menu is broken down into countries and styles, making it easy to find favorites. Just a couple miles from McNellie’s is Bricktown, an area of the city that contains our oldest beer mecca: TapWerks Ale House.
38
The building itself is remarkable, but so is the beer selection. TapWerks looks and feels like a pub. There is just something reassuring about brass and dark wood when it comes to picking
a beer joint. Their menu is nearly as extensive as McNellie’s, and they definitely have more beers on tap, including those local options you need to be trying: Anthem, Black Mesa, COOP, Mustang and Roughtail, to name some of the local favorites. At some point, you will want to hit up a brewery, and COOP opens their taproom every Saturday from 1-5 p.m. for sampling and purchase, and the tours are at 2-4 p.m. COOP was one of the city’s first craft breweries, and they remain the handsdown favorite among locals. COOP is located about as far west as is possible to still be called Oklahoma City, but you can hit up another brewery on the way there or the way back. Mustang Brewing Company is located just off Interstate 40, making it super easy to get to. The taproom is open every Friday from 3-7 p.m. Closer to downtown, you can find Anthem, and their brewery is open from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For late night carousing, head over to Deep Deuce. WSKY and Slaughter’s Hall are located right next door to each other. One of the city’s best whiskey selections is available at WSKY— assuming you are ready to switch from beer. If it’s still beer you want, step into Slaughter’s Hall and sample their selection of locals beers along with excellent pub food.
nightlife
Couple’s Outing This part of choose your own adventure is a little trickier. Are you an active couple? An artsy couple? Food and wine lovers? You can plan an entire day in any of those categories. While the winter months do put a damper on some of the city’s best options, you can still find activities that fit your more active lifestyle. For the real hearty types, a jog through the Myriad Gardens showcases one of the city’s prettiest locations, even in the winter. Depending on when you’re here, you may find the downtown ice skating rink open. Courtesy of Devon Energy, it’s located in Myriad Gardens, too. If it’s a competition you want, Topgolf at Chisholm Creek is fun for experienced golfers and beginners—and yes, the bays are heated.
Date night options abound in Oklahoma City. For wine lovers, head to The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro for one of the city’s best wine lists and a wonderful menu. For a dose of food and art, Mary Eddy’s restaurant in the 21c Hotel + Museum features outstanding American food from Chef Jason Campbell and an extensive gallery of art from the company’s private collection. If you are staying closer to downtown, Ludivine is the choice for locals who consider themselves foodies. In fact, it isn’t just locals who love Ludivine; they’ve been featured in publications around the country. The menu rotates constantly, so check social media for the current menu. Their wine list is small but excellent, and the cocktails are some of the best in town. Bricktown is home to The Mantel, a fine dining restaurant with an ambience that is perfect for a romantic date. The cuisine features the best seafood in town, and there are fifty wines by the glass. If you want Italian, head over to Stella in Midtown. It’s also a great date restaurant, featuring modern Italian cuisine and the largest list of Italian wines in the city.
The largest arts district in town is The Paseo. Located in the center of Oklahoma City, this historic district has dozens of galleries that feature working artists. There is almost no limit to the variety of media you will find, and drinks and dining are available at Picasso Café or Paseo Grill.
If you are not ready for the evening to end, dance the rest of the night away at Groovy’s, or for the country and western lovers, Moonshiners Music House in Bricktown is an upscale country dance hall.
www.VisitOKC.com
For the artsy couple, there are a number of museums and galleries, including the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. A traveling, rotating exhibit is always located on the first floor, and the collection of world famous glass artist Dale Chihuly on the third floor is breathtaking. The museum puts you close to ballet, symphony and Film Row, where you will find the IAO Gallery.

nightlife
Music Lovers Oklahoma City is home to some iconic music venues and only getting better with new venues like The Criterion in east Bricktown. The 4,000seat Criterion has adaptable seating to allow for smaller, more intimate shows, a state of the art sound system and a full bar for concert-goers. A partnership with Live Nation means The Criterion draws the best local and regional acts, especially singer-songwriters, alternative rockers, bluegrass and country artists.
www.VisitOKC.com
The Criterion is owned by the same group that made the Wormy Dog Saloon a household name around the state. Originally a Stillwater club, the Wormy Dog in Bricktown hosts top regional talent just about every weekend. Oklahoma City is only a few hours north of Austin, so the roots, Americana, bluegrass and Red Dirt artists who make Austin such a musical mecca make the trip up Interstate 35 regularly to play the Wormy Dog. One of the side benefits of the venue is that it’s a dance club as well, so feel free to two-step your way through the shows.
40
The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma is actually a degree program through the university, but it is also an event center that features a wide range of artists. ACM@UCO is actually in Bricktown and it focuses on several different genres. The venue regularly hosts performers—including comedians—with regional and national profiles. As it is contemporary in focus, the artists tend to be across genres, so it’s possible to see jazz, rock, country, swing or just about any other style you can imagine. Finally, for the serious music fan, the Blue Door is Oklahoma City’s best venue for listeners—no crowd noise, cigarette smoke or nonsense allowed at Blue Door. There are shows nearly every week, and the list of bands and musicians features some of the best local, regional and national acts, especially in the genres of Americana, folk, roots and new grass. Since they don’t sell alcohol or food on the premises, you are free to bring your favorite bottle of wine or an ice chest full of beer to enjoy during the show.

No trip to Oklahoma City is complete without a visit to some of the city’s many locally-owned gift shops, clothing stores and home decor boutiques. This guide was created to help you navigate the many stores and shopping districts this city has to offer, allowing you to plan your perfect OKC shopping experience.
Located north of OKC’s Central Business District on Broadway Ave., Automobile Alley was developed in the 1920s as a commercial district for the city’s burgeoning auto industry. At that time, the late 19th century wood frame homes in the area were demolished to make way for the iconic two to five story brick buildings the district is known for today. These charming buildings with expansive glass windows have been renovated to make way for many of the city’s premier shops and restaurants. Western Avenue
Nichols Hills
An exciting area for dining, shopping, and nightlife, this sprawling district spans three full miles along Western Avenue from NW 36th Street to Wilshire Avenue. The district is home to antique stores, a wide variety of restaurants, and more than a few historic establishments.
This exclusive residential community was developed by Dr. G.A. Nichols in 1929 as an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily city life. Residents enticed to move to Nichols Hills (then the northern edge of the city) were motivated as much by its high end shopping plazas as they were by its beautiful sprawling homes. While stores here certainly still retain the prestige this district is known for, there is something here for everyone.
Antique Avenue With more than 20 dealers and 20 years in business, this premiere antique boutique is the best spot for sought after collectibles and decor items. Balliet’s For 80 years Balliet’s has been the go-to place for fashionistas inspired by high-end design. The store’s discerning clientele trust Balliet’s personal shoppers to provide them with exclusive brands and a unique shopping experience. Luxe Objects This luxury home and gift boutique offers one of a kind pieces for sophisticated clients. Whether you go in for custom bedding, a vintage accent piece or just a gift for a girlfriend, you will leave feeling inspired. R Meyers Now owned by Cindi Shelby, a longtime employee of the iconic founder Ruth Meyers, this 40 year old high end boutique has been given a fresh new attitude. Plaza District For far too long the commercial strip known as The Plaza was full of cobwebs and memories of the good old days. Thanks to the efforts of a handful of small businesses and neighbors, 16th Street between Pennsylvania and Classen Avenues has been revitalized into the family friendly, walkable shopping and dining area it was meant to be. Bad Granny’s Bazaar One of Plaza’s pioneer businesses, Bad Granny’s is a staple for second hand shopping in the city. Each vendor has a unique collection of vintage, costume and nostalgia to keep you coming back.

Best of the Arts By Greg Horton
Oklahoma City’s art scene runs year round, so depending upon your preference, there are options in visual and performing arts every day. Most of the city’s arts options are located in or near downtown, making it very easy to access more than one choice.

Oklahoma City Ballet
46
Oklahoma City Ballet’s season runs from October through April. The company boasts an international group of dancers, many trained in some of the best schools in the world. Artistic Director Robert Mills has a repertory that includes classical works like Giselle, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet, as well as more contemporary masters like George Ballanchine and Agnes de Mille. Both will be featured at this seaon’s triple-bill premiere: Ballanchine’s “Serenade” and de Mille’s “Rodeo.” If you are in town with little ones, the OKC Ballet presents “The Nutcracker” every December. For visitors from larger cities, the ticket prices will be a very pleasant surprise.

The Oklahoma City Philharmonic The Oklahoma City Philharmonic offers shows year round, and the season is a combination of classics, pops, and discovery family series. Conductor Joel Levine oversees an outstanding collection of musicians, and world-renowned guest conductors, musicians and vocalists are featured every season. This season features Pops performances of the music of the Rolling Stones, Disney and Frank Sinatra. Classical works will include Beethoven, Brahms and Dvorak, among others. Concerts are at the Civic Center Music Hall downtown, and the area has plenty of parking and easy access to some of the city’s best restaurants. www.VisitOKC.com
Oklahoma City Museum of Art
48
Also in the downtown area is the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKC MOA). Visitors are greeted by a massive Dale Chihuly glass piece as they walk into the foyer, a not so subtle promise of what the third floor holds. The first floor is always occupied by a traveling, rotating exhibit that features
classic and contemporary artists in a wide range of media. The second floor holds several rooms where selections from the OKCMOA’s permanent collection are displayed—everything from mixed media, to painting, to sculpture. The third floor of the museum is home to a collection of Dale Chihuly glass exhibits. Ranging from the whimsical to the serious, Chihuly’s work is always remarkable, and the OKCMOA has done a wonderful job of staging the separate assemblages as a voyage of discovery. From Oct. 15-Jan. 8, 2017, illuminated manuscripts from the St. John’s Bible, Book of Hours, Qur’an and Torah will be on view at the museum. Called “Sacred Words: the Saint John’s Bible and the Art of Illumination,” the exhibit features seventy folios from the St. John’s Bible, the “first illuminated, handwritten Bible of monumental size to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in the modern age.”
CityRep
The art scene in Oklahoma City shifted dramatically with the arrival of 21c Hotel and Museum. The boutique hotel chain based in Bentonville, Ark., features an art museum in all their concepts. The art is spread throughout the hotel and Mary Eddy’s restaurant. Each exhibition is separately themed—“Fanciful” at Mary Eddy’s and “Labor and Materials” in the hotel—and the art represents some of the most original, contemporary art available today.
Oklahoma City has several excellent theatre companies offering Broadway style shows, as well as classic and contemporary plays and musicals. CityRep Theatre partners with Oklahoma City University and national and regional artists to offer a full slate of outstanding live performances. Many of the OCU students are well on their way to being the next Kristin Chenoweth or Megan Mullally, both OCU alumnae, meaning CityRep features some of the best young talent in the country.
Individual Artists of Oklahoma Less than a mile from the OKCMOA is the official gallery of the Individual Artists of Oklahoma (IAO), an organization that supports and features local artists from all over the state. The gallery is located in the Film Row district, close to plenty of food and entertainment. Exhibits rotate regularly, and the work on display comes from every conceivable genre, including film. A venue in the rear of the building regularly features poetry and music, as well. Exhibits rotate approximately every two months, so check the IAO website for current exhibits.
The Paseo Arts District Anyone serious about the visual arts has to head to The Paseo, Oklahoma City’s historic arts district. The area is home to more than 20 galleries that feature the work of approximately 80 artists. The first Friday of every month, all the galleries are open from 6-10 p.m. for the monthly Art Walk, even in the winter.

Lyric Theatre Lyric Theatre has performances in their home theatre in the Plaza District, as well as a full season of bigger shows at Civic Center Music Hall. Lyric has established itself as a staging ground for shows that are being groomed for Broadway, and so their seasons often feature regional or national premieres. This season’s shows will include “Fully Committed,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” and “A Christmas Carol.”

OKC Eats

With a booming food scene, eating local is one of the best ways to experience OKC. But with so many options, the choices can be daunting. Sometimes it’s best to ask the experts, and Katie Johnstonbaugh literally wrote the book on food in Oklahoma. She’s the author of “Food Lovers’ Guide to Oklahoma: The Best Restaurants, Markets & Local Culinary Offerings” and covers all things food on her popular blog, “Dishin & Dishes.” Here are just a few of her suggestions for a gastronomic tour of OKC
Guyutes This new and hip eatery located in the Uptown 23rd district has an eclectic menu of elevated street food like the Tequila Sunfryz, a platter of crispy waffle fries topped with pulled pork, tequila queso, diced jalapenos, onions and tomatoes and drizzled with avocado crema and capped off with a fried egg. They also offer up a varied menu of wraps, pizzas, salads and more and have a fantastic roof-top patio where you can relax and sip one of their specialty drinks or a variety of beer.
Pizzeria Gusto
Neapolitan Pizza made with imported Italian flour, tomatoes and other fine ingredients are the draw at Pizzeria Gusto along with a variety of small plate appetizers, salads and desserts. The pizza is fired over a 900-degree grill giving it that crispy crust goodness. Whether you’re a meat lover feasting on their Italian Sausage pizza with red onion, broccoli rabe pesto, fontina, Italian sausage and mozzarella-provolone cheese or choosing lighter fare like smoked salmon with tomato, caper, arugula, red onion, orange-pepper crema, there’s sure to be a pie to please everyone.
This trendy gourmet, grilled cheese eatery anchors the hip, ever-evolving Plaza District and serves up some fine drinks as well. Start out your meal with some amazingly delicious fried cheese curds and then select from one of their salads or a sandie like the Cortez made on jalapeño cornbread and filled with braised short ribs, peperoncino cheese, grilled jalapeño, caramelized onion and a spicy aioli. Wash it down with one of their craft sodas, regular or beer cocktails, shots or a choice off their large beer selection.
Waffle Champion
If you want a seat at this fun eatery featuring savory or sweet waffles, you’ll need to get there early as the line usually wraps out the door on weekends. Waffle Champion offers savory deliciousness like the buttermilk fried chicken with chicken tenders and crispy leeks wrapped up in a savory waffle and topped with Tabasco honey. As an added bonus, there are also Liege waffles, milkshakes and soups and salads on the menu.

Reservations are recommended at this quaint café as it fills up quickly. The menu is decidedly fine dining meets southwest spice and you can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu. Favorite starters include the roasted chicken and pepperjack strudel. Their chicken fried steak with jalapeno cream gravy is legendary along with their mixed seafood tamales. Cheever’s also serves up an amazing brunch on the weekends that is very reasonable and outstanding.
Breakfast & Brunch Spots Kitchen 324
Located inside the upscale Northpark Mall, Rococo’s is one of the few places around featuring cruise style brunch dining, and it is a winner right down to its build-your-own Bloody Mary Bar. Rococo’s is also one of the best seafood and finedining local places around, but their brunch shines featuring both hot and cold lines, custom made omelets, a carving station, mimosas and desserts.
Steakhouses Cattlemen’s Steakhouse
Featured nationally on “Diner’s Drive In’s and Dives,” Southern Living, Bon Appétit magazine, and the Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food,” Cattlemen’s in the historic Stockyard City is an Oklahoma legend and staple. Try the Presidential choice T-Bone steak which is what former President George Bush prefers to dine on when traveling to Oklahoma City. And if you’re brave, order some lamb fries on the side.
www.VisitOKC.com
Kitchen 324 not only has a beautiful ambiance, but is a delicious breakfast and brunch experience (as well as lunch and dinner). The airy atmosphere and lofty windows invite, while the seasonal and fresh menu inspires. Consisting of breakfast items like fried green tomatoes Benedict and pastry items like their Joenut of the Day, their brunch menu is also loaded with unconventional sides like Israeli couscous with feta, almonds and wild mushrooms. There are also hand carved sandwiches and the menu item that gets the most buzz – the fried chicken pot pie, a pastry-topped pot pie with a fried chicken drumstick poked down into the crust.

Dine at one of their booths and close the ornate curtains for a private and romantic dining experience. Try their melt-in-your-mouth Chilean sea bass or their Maple Leaf Farms duck breast. Meatloaf may not be the regular fine dining menu item, but Paseo Grill’s is one of the best ever made from ground beef tenderloin and a chipotle red wine demi glace. At lunch you must get there early for the chicken pot pie because it sells out early. When in Oklahoma City you can’t miss the Devon Tower looming above all other downtown buildings. High atop the building sits Vast, which offers a breath-taking, 360-degree-view of the city while featuring the most delicious cuisine around. Diners at lunch will be tempted from any
Pho Lien Hoa
While there are plenty of Pho restaurants in the large Asian District of Oklahoma City, Pho Lien Hoa is a top choice for locals. With a dining room packed with folks waiting on the delivery of large trays full of steaming bowls of pho soup with its rich deep broth that keep coming from the kitchen. Try the fresh and/or fried spring rolls and the avocado smoothie or a sweet glass of Vietnamese coffee dripped over glasses while you wait. Also don’t miss the fresh, crisp, steaming sesame balls brought around the dining room and offered for dessert.
Fung’s Kitchen
Dine family-style at Fung’s Kitchen at one of the large round tables with a lazy Susan wheel in the center and share amazing authentic Hong Kongstyle cuisine. Pick a whole roasted duck from the glass case at the front of the restaurant or order off either the American menu or the traditional Chinese menu. The wait staff is excellent about helping with recommendations from the Chinese menu. On the weekend, visit Fung’s for a dim sum experience and select various “small bites” brought around by the wait staff for you to choose.

RePUBlic Gastropub
This contemporary American public house is a cross between an upscale eatery and a good ol’ pub, with an extensive beer collection made apparent by their towering wall of hundreds of beer bottles behind the trendy bar and sporting events playing on the TV’s. But make no mistake, RePUBlic is much more than just the beer. Even non-beer drinkers would still swoon over the menu choices like the RePUBlic burger topped with caramelized onion-apple wood smoked bacon relish, blue and gruyere cheeses, arugula and a perfectly fried egg all nestled in a homemade pretzel bun. Their snack menu elevates pub food to a new level with items like truffled potato skins, and don’t miss the Mimi’s donuts for desserts as they come out hot and rolled in spiced sugar with three fantastic dipping sauces.

BBQ in OKC Earl’s Rib Palace
Born and bred in the heart of Oklahoma, you can visit them in one of their six locations around the city. They feature dry-rubbed, smoked meats and a variety of sauces. Try the Smokestack sandwich, a layering of chopped brisket, sliced hot links and topped with sweet creamy coleslaw.
Swadley’s Bar-B-Q

Leo’s Bar-B-Q
Leo’s Bar-B-Q has been featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diner’s, Drive In’s and Dives” and the atmosphere is classic, authentic diner-style BBQ joint. The hickory-smoked goodness and homestyle sides are worth the visit, and the complimentary glazed strawberry banana cake always steals the show.

Iron Star Urban Barbeque
Named for a notorious Oklahoma female outlaw, Iron Star Urban Barbeque has some fantastic BBQ. But people come back for their amazing side dishes like fancy mac & cheese, dutch oven sweet potatoes and corn pudding.
Bedlam Bar-B-Q

Fans of Bedlam love to hang out on the lovely patio with a huge outdoor fireplace and feast on their smoky BBQ and one of their many pies, cakes or bread pudding for dessert.
The Flying Pig BBQ
While technically a food truck, The Flying Pig is more mobile smokehouse, serving out delicious BBQ with some unique sauces like pineapple and mango habanero. Check them out on Facebook and Twitter to see where they’ll be located daily.
