SKY HIGH
The SandRidge Sky Trail at the Oklahoma River is one of OKC’s latest can’t-miss adventures. You can conquer the Sky Trail (the world’s tallest adventure course), get your adrenaline pumping on the Sky Slide (the tallest stainless steel slide in the country), experience the Rumble Drop (an 80-foot free-fall base jump) and more (check out page 48 for more details).
WET & WILD Three new H2O-centric attractions opened in 2013, making it easier than ever to stay cool during summer fun in OKC: RIPQURL and Pipeline Wave at White Water Bay and Wild West Water Works at Frontier City Theme Park.
UNDER THE SEA With more than 2,000 animals spread over 119 acres, it’s hard to believe the Oklahoma City Zoo could get any cooler. But it did. Now you can get your hands on (that’s right, this is a hands-on experience) a collection of 30 stingrays at the new Stingray Bay.
TAKE A BITE The Myriad Botanical Gardens & Tropical Conservatory, OKC’s urban oasis, is now home to two new eateries, the Ice House and Park House. The Ice House offers authentic Nic’s burgers (a legendary OKC meal), as well as fries and shakes (because who wants to eat a burger without those?). If you’re in the mood for something a little more upscale, then Park House is the place. Great food right smack in the middle of amazing scenery.
RETAIL THERAPY Some of the latest and greatest additions to OKC’s rapidly growing shopping scene include Nordstrom Rack, Michael Kors, new local shops at Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads, and even more additions to the awesome Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City. Also, Von Maur will be opening at Quail Springs Mall in fall 2014. With all these new shopping options, you may want to bring an extra suitcase. 12
ABOUT OKC

Coming
CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL OKC is the place to be for collegiate championships in 2014. OKC will play host to the NCAA Division I championships in wrestling (March 20-22), softball (May 29-June 4) and volleyball (December 18-20) this year. Plan your visit now to make sure you don’t miss a minute of the action.
REST YOUR HEAD The hotel options in downtown OKC just keep growing. Hotels set to open in 2014 include The Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites (in Bricktown), Aloft Hotel (in Deep Deuce), the Holiday Inn Express (in Bricktown) and the Ambassador Hotel (in Midtown). For more information, visit VisitOKC.com/hotels.
MAKE SOME FURRY FRIENDS While you may not be able to cuddle the residents of the Oklahoma City Zoo, you can get up close and personal with them at the Joan Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital, a $9 million veterinary hospital designed to educate Zoo visitors on the health and welfare of the Zoo’s animals which is planned to open in 2014.
PARDON OUR PROGRESS
www.visitokc.com
The renaissance in downtown OKC continues. A recent $176 million renovation has made our city’s center more pedestrian friendly while also adding beautiful landscaping, public art, bike lanes, sleek street lighting and more. Those empty lots just west of the Chesapeake Energy Arena are the future site of our new convention center, set to open in 2019. And all that land south of where the convention center will be is the future home of a 70-acre park, which will connect the downtown core with activities along the Oklahoma River. The first phase of construction on the park is set to begin in 2014.

Adventure District
18
If you’re looking to fill the day (or weekend) with family-friendly adventures, Oklahoma City’s Adventure District has you covered. This two-mile area includes the can’t-miss National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the nationally-renowned Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens and plenty of hands-on family fun at Science Museum Oklahoma. It’s also home to Remington Park Racing Casino, the state’s premier horse racing facility with Oklahoma City’s only casino.
local take
Eat… dinner at Gabriella’s Italian Grill & Pizzeria, where everything is homemade. We suggest the brick oven pizzas. Or the house-made pastas. And the calzones. Oh, and if you can save room for dessert, be sure to grab a cannoli.
Enjoy… feeding the stingrays at Stingray Bay, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s newest exhibit, where you can touch stingrays as they fly and glide through their 16,000-gallon saltwater pool. These guys and gals have been enjoying their new home since July 2013. And don’t worry, at Stingray Bay, each stingray’s barb is carefully trimmed from their tail. Stingray Bay is a seasonal attraction, open March through October.
Experience… live science experiments at Science Museum Oklahoma. The “Science LIVE!” show takes place twice daily during the week and three times each day on the weekends giving plenty of opportunities for the kiddos to wowed by this amazing show.
My favorite thing about the Adventure District is you can enjoy some of Oklahoma City’s most treasured, nationally-acclaimed attractions all within a few blocks. Aaron Martin
Director of Tourism Marketing & Volunteer Coordinator, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
ABOUT OKC
Eat… authentic Vietnamese at Lido Restaurant. Experience the unique fusion of Vietnamese cuisine and its colonial French counterpart with dishes like Vietnamese Curry Frog Legs.
Enjoy… some Phõ. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. There’s a plethora of Phõ restaurants in the Asian District, but you can’t go wrong with Phõ Lien Hoa. You can also get some great, authentic Chinese food from Grand House China Bistro.
Experience… a shopping experience that’s hard to find outside of Asia at Super Cao Nguyen. Known to draw customers from neighboring states because of their extensive selection of hard-to-find Asian foods, this store is a must-see for foodies.
An influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s transformed the area surrounding Northwest 23rd Street and Classen Boulevard into a vibrant enclave of Asian culture. It’s where you’ll find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC including some of the most authentic (and delicious) Vietnamese food this side of the Pacific.
I love being able to go into the Asian District to eat some of the best and most authentic Asian foods outside of physically traveling halfway around the world. Ba Luong

Eat… an Elvis burger at S&B Burger Joint. A mouth-watering burger topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion and peanut butter. Yep, peanut butter. While this location has a great patio, you can also grab the Elvis burger (and other popular menu items) at other S&B Burger Joint locations around the metro.
Enjoy… a margarita on the patio of Iguana Mexican Grill. With one of the most extensive tequila selections in the state, any of Iguana’s 200+ tequilas can be used to make your perfect margarita. Frozen or on the rocks; it’s your call.
Experience… shopping at locally-owned shops. Plenty Mercantile, Shop Good, Bow & Arrow Boutique and Rawhide are locally-owned and locally-loved, so we’re sure you will find the perfect piece of Oklahoma City to take home with you. And be sure to check out OKC’s first container store, Perch’d, located on NW 9th Street. You can’t miss the bright teal metal container store next to S&B Burger Joint.
I love that Automobile Alley has such a rich history that’s being highlighted and restored by its property owners and shop proprietors. It’s a wonderful place to have a meal and linger a little while for some gift shopping — all right in the heart of downtown! Audrey Falk

ABOUT OKC
Boathouse District Eat… a healthy snack on-the-go from Shop24 robotic convenience store. Located east of the Chesapeake Boathouse, this giant refrigerated vending machine is a convenient way to grab a bite while staying active along the river. It’s open 24/7 and also sells souvenir hats and t-shirts.
Enjoy… a pleasure cruise along a seven-mile stretch of the Oklahoma River on an Oklahoma River Cruiser. Regular ferry service runs from Wednesday to Sunday between the Boathouse District (Regatta Park Landing), Stockyards City (Exchange Landing) and the Meridian corridor (Meridian Landing). There are also a number of specialty cruises offered throughout the year, like Sunset and Cocktail Cruises.
Experience… a bike ride along the Oklahoma River Trails. Rent a bike at the Chesapeake Boathouse (or bring your own) and enjoy 13 miles of unimpeded trails on the banks of the Oklahoma River.
The facilities at the Boathouse District are phenomenal. You have everything you need for training right at the tip of your fingers - coaches, equipment and technology. Kaitlyn McElroy
Member, Flatwater Canoe/Kayak National Team

local take
The Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River is a hotspot for outdoor recreation. It’s the official U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/kayak and hosts numerous regattas throughout the year. But there’s plenty to do for non-Olympians too. Anyone can enjoy kayaking, dragon boating, stand up paddle boarding and cycling, with rentals from the Chesapeake Boathouse. There’s also the world’s tallest adventure course, the tallest stainless-steel slide in America and more. Read more about all there is to do in the Boathouse District on page 48.

ABOUT OKC
Bricktown/ Deep Deuce This former warehouse district is now Oklahoma City’s most popular entertainment and dining district. Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, Bricktown is filled with restaurants, shops and entertainment options. Catch a foul ball at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Enjoy a matinee at Harkins Bricktown Cinemas. Jump on a Bricktown Water Taxi. And eat to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content. Travel a few blocks north to Deep Deuce where you can find great restaurants, bars, and more.
Eat… a slice of pizza (or the whole pie!) at The Wedge Deep Deuce. As the twin brother of its Western Avenue location, The Wedge serves up gooey pizza goodness from its wood-fired oven, made fresh daily with local ingredients.
Enjoy… a drink and an Oklahoma sunset on a Bricktown patio. Need a few suggestions? Try a Jalapeno Cooler at Yucatan Taco Stand, a COOP Ale Works’ F5 IPA at Skinny Slims, or a Purple Bar Tini at the Purple Bar at Nonna’s Euro-American Ristoranté & Bar. The sunset provides all the entertainment you need, but don’t be surprised if you have some live music to accompany the view.
Experience… a few frames at RedPin Bowling
2014 Oklahoma City Visitors Guide
Lounge. Located on the canal level in Lower Bricktown, RedPin features 10 sleek, contemporary-styled bowling lanes perfect for a night out with family and friends.
22
local take
I love the diversity. What Bricktown is depends upon when you are there. If you are here on weekdays, you would think it is a business district combined with a neighborhood. Come on weekend days, you’ll see families and strollers. Weekend nights it comes alive with clubs and bars. During sporting events, it’s all about that sport. Come in the summer, you’d be amazed by the visitors from all over the country and the world. Chad Huntington
Manager, Bricktown Water Taxi
ABOUT OKC
Midtown
Eat… at a food truck favorite that’s always in the same place. Waffle Champion started as a mobile kitchen filling stomachs in OKC with delicious waffle-ness. These days, they’ve put their roots in Midtown with a brick and mortar location that oozes syrupy goodness. Dive into their Buttermilk n’ Sage Fried Chicken (served on top of your choice of a savory or sweet waffle) or build your own Sweet Waffle (we suggest you include speculoos spread – aka cookie butter).
Enjoy… a rooftop with a view. Located on the east side of Midtown, Packard’s New American Kitchen was once a Packard dealership, but today it’s one of OKC’s newest restaurant success stories. Stroll the original tile showroom floor and head up to the rooftop deck for a Pack Mule or maybe the Duke of Earl (don’t worry, those are cocktails) and one of the most incredible views in Oklahoma City.
Experience… a local brew at McNellie’s in Midtown
local take In a very short amount of time it has become a hot spot in OKC and more and more is happening every day. Lori Tyler Owner, Stella Modern Italian Cuisine
www.visitokc.com
(James E. McNellie’s Public House if we’re being proper). Worried about the selection? Don’t be. With more than 350 beers offered, you can sample everything from hard-to-find draught beers to great local brews like COOP Horny Toad, Marshall Sundown Wheat, Choc American Wheat and more. (Read more about local brews on page 59.)
Want to eat like a local? Midtown is the district for you. It’s filled with OKC staples like Brown’s Bakery, the Boulevard Cafeteria and Kaiser’s American Bistro and fan-following favorites like Irma’s Burger Shack and Elemental Coffee. Once you’ve stuffed yourself silly, you can take a Spokie bike rental on a spin around the historic neighborhoods that fill the district.

ABOUT OKC
Paseo
2014 Oklahoma City Visitors Guide
Developed in 1929 as the first shopping district north of downtown, the Paseo Arts District is now home to 17 galleries and more than 60 artists. The curved, two-block street is filled with Spanish revival architecture, not to mention great restaurants, a coffee house, boutiques, gift shops and more.
24
local take
Eat… classic American fare in the comfortable confines of the Paseo Grill. Located right smack in the middle of the Paseo district, Paseo Grill is an intimate retreat without a hint of stuffiness. If you find yourself here at lunch, we highly recommend the Chicken Pot Pie. At dinnertime, sip on a glass of red wine while devouring the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast.
Enjoy… art. Everywhere. From public art on the streets to oils and watercolors filling each gallery to the brim, if you’re an art lover, this is your place. If you happen to be in the Paseo on the first Friday and Saturday of the month, you can even experience the district’s monthly gallery walk.
Experience… live music. As one of OKC’s artsiest districts, the Paseo is also a great spot for enjoying live music at places like The Picasso Café and Sauced on Paseo.
Not only is the Paseo Arts District one of the most creative art venues in the country, it’s one of the most eclectic. You can enjoy a glass of wine and cherrywood smoked salmon in a more sophisticated atmosphere or a cold beer and a slice on a casual outdoor patio! It all works together to create a very special, colorful and intimate environment. Joy Reed Belt, Ph.D.

ABOUT OKC
Plaza

Eat… a grilled cheese worth writing home about at The Mule. “Grilled cheese?” you ask. Yes, but not just any grilled cheese. Try the Macaroni Pony (three-cheese macaroni and cheese, chipotle barbecue pulled pork and pickles on jalapeño cornbread) or the Cortez (jalapeño cornbread with braised short ribs, Peperoncino, grilled jalapeño, caramelized onion and spicy aioli). And don’t skip the tomato soup. Trust us.
Enjoy…
a show at the cozy Lyric at the Plaza. Oklahoma City’s Lyric Theatre calls the Plaza District home for half of the year (the other half is spent at the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown OKC). The smaller, 270-seat theater makes for an intimate and incredible, show stopping experience. (Turn to page 65 to find out more about Lyric’s 2014 performances.)
Experience… fun and funky local shopping. No vacation is
local
All of take the shops and restaurants in the district are local, so it’s a great place to experience the local creativity of Oklahoma City artists and entreprenuers. Retail, theater, dance, music, food and art all come together in the Plaza District to create a unique flavor that’s all our own! Kristen Vails Executive Director, Plaza District Association
www.visitokc.com
complete without a few take-homes, right? The local shops of the Plaza District are perfect for souvenir shopping. Hop into Tree + Leaf for some OKC apparel (like an OKC Thunder shirt, because we know you’re a fan). DNA Galleries is filled with great OKC-centered accessories including Oklahoma key chains, stickers, koozies and even an OKC coloring book for your favorite little one.
Talk about an up-andcomer. More than $15 million in recent investments has transformed Northwest 16th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Classen Boulevard into a funky creative hub filled with art galleries, specialty shops, and great local restaurants.

Stockyards City A visit to Stockyards City is a great way to experience the authentic American West that’s still alive and well in this modern metropolis. Home to a number of shops specializing in all things western, you can outfit an entire ranch (cattle included) or just find a new pair of boots and enjoy a great steak.
local take
Eat… like a ranch hand at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse. Oklahoma City’s oldest restaurant has been serving up steaks to cowboys and city-folk alike for more than 100 years. Their steaks are legendary, but their lamb fries, dinner rolls and homemade desserts are just as delicious.
Enjoy… live country music at The Rodeo Opry. Located in the Rodeo Theatre along Exchange Avenue, this family-friendly venue serves up great live music every Saturday night.
Experience… live cattle auctions every Monday and Tuesday at the Oklahoma National Stock Yards. Stockyards City’s namesake first opened in 1910 and is the world’s largest stocker-feeder cattle market. Visitors are welcome to trek across the catwalk spanning the outdoor holding pens to the auction house, where cattle are paraded through in lots and sold to the highest bidder. If you’re looking for an authentic western experience (or a few head of cattle), you’ve come to the right place.
What I love most about historic Stockyards City is that it is authentic — the “real deal”. Still having our bustling, active stockyards and period shops, visitors get to see real cowboys and be immersed in the period when cowboys and the western lifestyle were prevalent. Uptown Eat…
a uniquely-Oklahoman burger. Onion burgers in Oklahoma go almost as far back as Oklahoma itself. What was introduced during the Great Depression to help cafes stretch their beef is now just plain deliciously good food. So while you’re in town, head over to Tucker’s Onion Burgers for a, well, onion burger. If you’re particularly hungry, try the Mother Tucker – triple the onion burger goodness of a single onion burger. And what good is an onion burger if it isn’t accompanied by fresh cut fries and a hand-dipped shake? Our mouths are watering.
Enjoy… a classic (smoke-free) watering hole. Grandad’s Bar is OKC’s premier smoke-free honky-tonk located in the heart of Uptown. You can grab a cold Oklahoma brew (or the domestic or import beer of your choice), listen to some great live music and experience one of Uptown’s greatest offerings.
Experience… story time at its best. Whether you’ve brought

the kids along or you’re just a kid at heart, you don’t want to miss out on Storybook Hour at Cuppies & Joe. Held every first and third Saturday at 9 a.m., your kiddos will be enthralled by an enchanting tale while you find yourself equally enthralled with any and everything on the menu at Cuppies and Joe. From coffee and tea to cupcakes, pies and more morning-friendly treats, this is a must-stop-shop for the whole family.
Uptown is one of OKC’s oldest districts, but also one of the newest to make a comeback. Home to some delicious dining options like Big Truck Tacos, Cheever’s, Back Door BBQ, Pizza 23 and more. Uptown is on its way back up. Stop by and see the revitalization in action.

Western Avenue/ Classen Curve Western Avenue and Classen Curve combine for the perfect blend of old and new in Oklahoma City. Western Avenue’s charming neighborhoods and quaint ambiance go back to the days of historic Route 66. Classen Curve is the new kid on the block, with a sleek, modern design recently built from the ground up. Both provide the perfect place for perusing an eclectic mix of local restaurants and bars, retail shops and boutiques, antique and home décor stores and fine art galleries.
local take
Eat… your way through Western Avenue and Classen Curve. For breakfast, we recommend The Wedge Pizzeria (daily Grab-N-Go breakfast) or Café 501 (Saturday breakfast and Sunday brunch). When lunchtime rolls around, head over to Saturn Grill or The Iguana Café both located in Nichols Hills Plaza. Dinner calls for a burger at Irma’s Burger Shack or downhome barbeque at Earl’s Rib Palace. For dessert, Green Goodies offers some of the best made-from-scratch cupcakes in OKC. They even have specialty cupcakes including gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, vegan and diabetic-friendly.
Enjoy… a glass of vino at Flip’s Wine Bar & Trattoria. A favorite happy hour spot among locals, Flip’s is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m…which means happy hour can easily turn into dinner, and dinner into late night snacking. An OKC staple since 1994, Flip’s great wine list pairs wonderfully with their authentic Italian dishes including homemade pasta, sauces and pizzas.
Experience… some “me” time in Classen Curve. For the gentlemen of the trip, mosey on over to Carwin’s Shave Shop for a straight razor shave by OKC’s finest barbers and follow it up with a brew at RePUBlic Gastropub. For the ladies, enjoy a day of pampering at Balliet’s. Indulge with a Chamomile & Honey Soothing Facial and get all dolled up by Balliet’s Beauty Team who will design a makeup palette just for you.
If I had just a few hours to spare in Classen Curve, the first stop would be a facial from Balliets and a to-go salad from Café 501. Next would be to get a blowout at Blo, and then would come shopping. I’d grab a new pair of running shoes at Red Coyote, check out the cutting edge eyewear at Black Optical and hit up one of my favorite stops, Lululemon. Andrea Mason

There’s no doubt about it: Oklahoma City has been Thunder-struck. Since our boys in blue arrived in 2008, OKC has fallen in love with this team. And with playoff appearances four out of the past five seasons, including a run to the NBA Finals in 2012, this team has been easy to love. The Thunder has also been ranked as one of the top five professional
with the
sports franchises in ESPN The Magazine’s Ultimate Standings the past two years – No. 1 in 2012 and No. 4 in 2013. So, you want to get in on the Thunder action? Here’s your guide for how to Thunder Up like a local.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
A Night Out with the Thunder: (based on a 7 p.m. tip-off) 5 p.m. Get to downtown early to grab a bite to eat. You’ll find plenty of choices in the Downtown and Bricktown areas for whatever your foodie heart desires (and plenty of beverage options as well). 6 p.m. Walk over to Love’s Thunder Alley on Reno Avenue (the street directly north of the Chesapeake Energy Arena) to enjoy some pre-game entertainment. This family-friendly street party includes music, games, face painting, Thunder merchandise available for purchase and much more. 6:30 p.m. Time to find your seat! You don’t want to miss the
pre-game, in-arena entertainment before the lights go down and the Thunder starts to roll.
7 p.m. It’s game time… Let’s Thunder Up! 9:30 p.m. Don’t want to unwind from the Thunder victory just
yet? Head on over to the patio at FLINT, the restaurant at the Colcord Hotel, for a post-game drink and bite to eat. Or make your way to Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse in Bricktown where you might even catch a glimpse of a Thunder player or two. Of course, actual tip-off times may vary, so be sure to check the Thunder schedule first. And, as always, enjoy Thunder game nights responsibly. Alternative transportation back to your hotel is always available.
Don’t have tickets? Never fear, there are plenty of options for you to enjoy a Thunder game in OKC regardless if the game is home or away. For home games, head to the Kia Thunder Rewards Zone outside of the Chesapeake Energy Arena where fans can enter to win or purchase the final 100 pairs of tickets to each home game. RIVERSPORT
48
The Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City is a hot-spot for urban recreation. Home of the OKC National High Performance Center, the Boathouse District is an official U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Site for rowing and canoe/kayak. But don’t let the Olympic hopefuls have all the fun. Here are some of the ways you can play on and along the river in OKC.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Chesapeake Boathouse
Located within walking distance of the hotels and restaurants of the Bricktown Entertainment District, the Chesapeake Boathouse serves as Oklahoma City’s community boathouse and the focal point for OKC RIVERSPORT rowing, kayaking, running, cycling and fitness programs. It’s also located next to the Bricktown Landing, where the Bricktown Canal meets the Boathouse District. You can take a Bricktown Water Taxi down to the landing and be dropped off feet from where Oklahoma River Cruisers pick up passengers for trips down the Oklahoma River.
OKC RIVERSPORT
OKC RIVERSPORT offers hourly recreational kayak, stand up paddleboard and water bicycle rentals daily, March through October, at the Chesapeake Boathouse. Bicycle rentals are available daily up to one hour prior to the boathouse closing.
Kayak
A great group activity, dragon boating has been popular for centuries in Asian countries and has grown in popularity throughout the world in recent years. Originating from Chinese fishing vessels, these festive boats are decorated with fierce dragon heads, colorful bodies and elaborate tails. You can schedule groups for 11 or 21 person boats.
Stand Up Paddleboard
Stand Up Paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing watersports around, and the calm waters of the Oklahoma River are a great place to experience it. And similar to kayaking, the OKC RIVERSPORT staff can help first-timers get started with basic instructions.
www.visitokc.com
Kayaking is an easy way for ages 8 and up to get out on the water. OKC RIVERSPORT staff can show you the basics you need to have fun and stay safe on the water. Kayakers can paddle dam-to-dam in the Eastern basin of the Oklahoma River. No reservations are required, but reservations for groups of six or more are recommended.

Sky Trail Towering six stories above the north bank of the Oklahoma River, the SandRidge Sky Trail is the world’s tallest adventure course. The 80foot structure features six levels of challenges that increase in difficulty the higher you climb. And since you’re securely fastened to the Sky Trail with a full safety harness, you can safely explore as high as your nerves will allow. Once you’ve made your way to the very top, you can slide back down the Sky Slide, the tallest stainless
steel slide in the country, at speeds up to 17 miles per hour. Or the more adventurous can skip the slide and go straight for the Rumble Drop, where a safety cable slows your descent while you get the rush of jumping from 80 feet up. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes (no flip flops) if you plan to do the Sky Trail, Sky Slide or Rumble Drop. The SandRidge Sky Trail is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on all weekends, March through May and September through October.
youth zone
The Youth Zone packs in plenty of adventure for the younger set. The Sky Tykes adventure course is a scaled-down version of the SandRidge Sky Trail. Parents can comfortably walk with their kiddos as they experience the challenges just a few feet off the ground and always safely harnessed in – just like the big kids. There’s also the Cloud Bounce, a 40-foot inflatable pillow offering bouncing fun for all ages, a miniature zipline that’s available for both children and adults, and the Extreme Air bungee lets you jump and flip to thrilling heights. Kids can also enjoy all the fun of the free Boathouse District playground.
With plans for two additional boathouses, permanent windscreens and grandstands for watching regattas and other events, the Oklahoma River will continue to shine as one of the premier rowing and canoe/kayaking venues as well.
Coming soon
www.visitokc.com
There are more outdoor adventure options coming soon to the Boathouse District, including an Adventure Zip Line that will run across the Oklahoma River from the top of the SandRidge Sky Trail and an indoor surf park at the SandRidge Youth Pavilion. A $35-million whitewater rafting and kayaking center is set to open in 2015, which will bring water sports to a whole new level in OKC.

Take Refuge Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge is a 1,000-acre wildlife refuge just a short paddle from the Route 66 Boathouse on the east shore of Lake Overholser. If you’re in OKC anytime between March and October, head over to the Route 66 Boathouse, rent a kayak and escape the hustle and bustle without ever leaving the city.
Off the Grid Biking and hiking enthusiasts will find a myriad of options in Oklahoma City. The Bluff Creek Trail, located on the northwest corner of West Hefner Road and North Meridian Avenue, is a single loop of more than 2.5 miles with tight turns around trees and some moderately difficult terrain. The Lake Stanley Draper Trail, located at Southeast 74th Street and Douglas Boulevard, has three connecting loops that can be ridden consecutively for a distance of 12 miles.
Game, Set and Match The Oklahoma City Tennis Center at Will Rogers Park is a public facility with 24 outdoor courts. With a modern pro shop, upgraded lighting, misting stations and covered seating areas, you can play like a pro or cheer from the sidelines.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Runner’s Guide Your daily run is a great way to explore Oklahoma City while also getting in a little exercise. With more than 140 miles of trails throughout the city, you’re never far from a great running path. But to help you narrow it down, here are a few of the favorite running routes for locals.
Lake Hefner – Bert Cooper Trails Lake Hefner is a haven for sports and recreation enthusiasts. Here you’ll find nearly 10 miles of paved, multipurpose trails surrounding the lake with markers every half mile.
Oklahoma River Trails Some of the newest trails in OKC, the Oklahoma River Trails offer 13 miles of unimpeded, paved paths along the Oklahoma River.
Downtown While you’re bound to come across stop lights, crosswalks and cars, downtown also offers some great running routes. Here’s one that will take you by a few of downtown’s best sights, and help you clock nearly two miles – not bad for vacation. • Start at the southwest corner of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum (North Harvey Avenue & Northwest 4th Street). • Head west on Northwest 4th Street and go south on North Hudson Avenue. • You’ll run south on North Hudson Avenue for three blocks until you reach the Oklahoma City Museum of Art at Couch Drive.
• When you get to South Robinson Avenue, you’ll be able to see the Chesapeake Energy Arena. • From here, head back north on Robinson Avenue until you reach Northwest 4th Street. • Go back west on Northwest 4th Street for one block and you’ll find yourself back where you started – at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. If you’d like something simpler, here’s our suggestion – head over to the Myriad Botanical Gardens & Tropical Conservatory. It only takes one-and-a-half trips around the exterior sidewalk to go one mile.
• From here, head west on Couch Drive over to North Walker Avenue where you’ll see the Civic Center Music Hall.
• Run east along West Reno Avenue for three blocks – you’ll run by the Myriad Gardens (it will be on the north).

First Friday: Paseo Gallery Walk The First Friday Gallery Walk is held on the first Friday of every month in the Paseo Arts District. With more than 60 artists and 17 galleries open for the evening, there is bound to be something to satisfy your creative soul. Enjoy live music on the patio of Sauced on Paseo, grab a drink at Picasso Café and peruse the eclectic mix of art styles as you explore the two-block district.
Third Friday: Premiere on Film Row As OKC’s newest Friday night event, Premiere on Film Row is the place to be in OKC on the third Friday of each month. Where else can you catch a flick at an old Paramount Pictures distribution warehouse like The Paramount OKC or grab a glass of wine and gourmet pizza in an old film exchange building like at Joey’s Pizzeria? Located on West Sheridan Avenue in downtown, Premiere on Film Row features musicians, artists, performers, food, drinks and more.
Second Friday: LIVE on the Plaza With a fun theme each month (think Luau on the Plaza and Love on the Plaza!), LIVE on the Plaza is OKC’s second Friday destination. Shops stay open late. People mingle up and down Northwest 16th Street in the Plaza District. Live music fills the air. Artists showcase their work in shops and on sidewalks. And restaurants have tasty treats (and beverages) for all to enjoy. It’s perfect for a casual night out in one of OKC’s trendiest districts.

Last Friday: H&8th Night Market www.visitokc.com
Located in the area surrounding North Hudson Avenue and Northwest 8th Street in downtown Oklahoma City (hence the festival name H&8th), this street party wraps up the month (March-October) with a bang. What started out as a small gathering of food trucks and area shops extending their Friday hours has grown into one of OKC’s most popular Friday night hangouts. This family-and-pet-friendly street festival includes live music on the main stage, an entire city block of food trucks and Oklahoma craft beer from Oklahoma City’s own COOP Ale Works.

DINING
72
Every major city has a signature food -- Philly has their cheesesteak, Chicago’s deep-dish pizza, Baltimore’s blue crab. And Oklahoma City has its share of culinary originals as well.
We sat down with Dave Cathey, Food Editor at The Oklahoman, to discuss what can’t-miss and won’t-find-them-anywhere-else foods you will find in OKC.
DINING
Fried Onion Burgers
Steak
The fried onion burger is an Oklahoma original, created by frugal chefs in the 1920s looking to make their beef stretch a little farther. They started pressing heaping piles of thinly shredded onions into their beef patties and found that the recipe wasn’t just more economical, it also tasted great. From these humble beginnings, fried onion burgers soon became a staple across Oklahoma. Here are two OKC diners that serve up some of the best Onion Burgers you’ll find anywhere in the state.
As the home of the world’s largest stockerfeeder cattle market, we know a thing or two about good beef. And while we already mentioned the iconic Cattlemen’s, there are plenty of other places to find a good steak in OKC.
Modern Vintage Tucker’s Onion Burgers Opened in 2011, Tucker’s is a relatively new purveyor of this classic dish. Their sleek, retro diners in Uptown 23rd and Classen Curve serve up fresh onion burgers as well as hand-dipped shakes, fresh cut fries, homemade lemonade and more.
Classic Bunny’s Onion Burgers Bunny’s is one of the classic Onion Burger joints in OKC, having served up onion burgers and other diner fare for more than 50 years. Visit their original location northside or their newest location southside.
Contemporary RedPrime Steak Try a superb steak in a sleek setting. With 18-foot ceilings and skylights, this dining experience will leave you both full and in awe of the meticulously renovated Buick Building in the heart of Automobile Alley.
Intimate The Mantel Wine Bar & Grill Take your choice of steak at a quiet, private and romantically-lit table. Savor your meal at the steakhouse recognized by Cornell University as one of the country’s best ‘gourmet’ restaurants.
Lamb Fries If you have to ask, you may not want to know. While this breaded and fried delicacy isn’t exclusive to Oklahoma City, it is a must-try item on the menu of one of Oklahoma City’s most beloved restaurants: Cattlemen’s Steakhouse.
Iconic Cattlemen’s Steakhouse
www.visitokc.com
In the heart of Stockyards City, Cattlemen’s is Oklahoma City oldest continually operating restaurant. They’ve been serving up steaks to cowboys and city-folk alike for more than 100 years. And while they certainly serve some of the best steak you’ll find anywhere, no trip to Cattlemen’s is complete without at least sampling a lamb fry or two.

Not just any steak
Since
Hungry for steak? Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been recognized by Gourmet Magazine, Southern Living and Bon Appetit. We’ve also been featured on the hit television shows Man Vs. Food and Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Cattlemen’s has won the Best Steakhouse Award by The Oklahoman and the Oklahoma Gazette every year for nearly two decades. Even the President dropped in for a great steak. But the best proof of just how great our steak is – is to come taste for yourself.

Chicken Fried Steak
Farm-to-Table
If you really want to eat like an Okie, it’s hard to beat chicken fried steak. In fact, chicken fried steak is part of the official meal for the State of Oklahoma. And while you can find this simple breaded cutlet dish of tenderized cube steak throughout the Southern United States, we like to think ours is some of the best you’ll find anywhere.
You may be familiar with the farm-to-table movement, but at Nonna’s Euro-American Ristoranté & Bar it’s more like farm-AND-table.
Fancier Cheever’s Cafe Cheever’s is a contemporary mix of fine dining and comfort food. Their chicken fried steak is a good example of that. They use top sirloin steak and cover it with jalapeño gravy.
Not-so-fancy Ann’s Chicken Fry House Ann’s is a popular stop along Route 66 and home to some of the best chicken fried steak you’ll find on or off the mother road. It’s a classic, and so is the food.
Locally GrownNonna’s Euro-American Ristoranté & Bar Avis Scaramucci, owner of Nonna’s, decided to start growing her own produce shortly after opening the restaurant. What started with a tiny greenhouse on the edge of town is now Cedar Spring Farms, where Scaramucci grows tomatoes, lettuces, microgreens, wheatgrass, edible flowers and fresh herbs. All the produce is handpicked and delivered daily to her iconic restaurant in the heart of the Bricktown Entertainment District.
Vietnamese Oklahoma City has one of the largest per-capita Vietnamese populations in the country. This means we also have some of the best Vietnamese restaurants you’ll find anywhere in the states. Centered mostly around the Asian District, Phõ and other traditional Vietnamese dishes are abundant and delicious.
Traditional Phõ Lien Hoa Phõ is a savory noodle soup which usually includes beef or chicken. It’s a popular street food in Vietnam and a popular dish in a number of Vietnamese restaurants in OKC. Phõ Lien Hoa is a great place to sample this classic Vietnamese food.
Contemporary – Guernsey Park www.visitokc.com
Guernsey Park could be considered the next generation of Vietnamese food in Oklahoma City. The chef and owners are descendants of Vietnamese immigrants that came to OKC en masse in the 1970s. Its menu reflects the chef’s authentic Vietnamese roots and classicallytrained background.

LOOKING TO
Eat
Yes, you’re on vacation, so we think you should live it up. But sometimes you don’t have time for fine dining, or you’d rather save that splurge for souvenirs. Here in OKC we’re all about getting great quality without spending a great quantity. Here are a few tasty local dining options for you to munch on that won’t break the bank.
Sonic Sonic may be called “America’s Drive-In” but since their headquarters are here in OKC, we claim it as our own personal drive-in. With tons of options and locations all across the city, it’s the perfect place to have a quick and delicious meal in between your extensive sightseeing.
Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs Mutt’s Amazing Hot Dogs offers just what the name says – amazing hot dogs. But you can get more than ketchup and mustard on your frank. They have a variety of choices (you can even get a duck dog if you want) to spice up your favorite food.

Braum’s
76
Braum’s is an Oklahoma favorite. It all started in Tuttle, Okla. in 1933, and today you’ll find Braum’s locations all across OKC (as well as the state and some neighboring states). Their ice cream is legendary. Their burgers are scrumptious. Their breakfast is comforting. Basically it’s all so, so tasty.
Big Truck Tacos Looking for a unique meal on the cheap? Big Truck Tacos is a can’t-miss spot where you’ll find an innovative mix of Mexican street tacos and a variety of other tasty treats like burritos, gorditos and more.
Café 7 Delicatessen and Pastaria Café 7 is quite a gem – actually, gems, as there are two locations in OKC (one on the northside and one downtown). They serve up a variety of pizzas, pastas, salads or sandwiches. With each entrée priced under $10, you’ve got a scrumptious meal for not a lot of dough.
Nic’s Grill There are quite a few places in town that serve good burgers. And a few that serve burgers so good you should run out, buy a postcard and write home to Mom about them. Nic’s Grill falls into the latter category. You can visit the original location on 1201 N. Pennsylvania Ave, or grab a Nic’s burger from the Ice House near the Myriad Botanical Gardens downtown, open March through October.
Saturn Grill If you’ve got some picky eaters in your bunch, Saturn Grill might be the answer to your dining dilemmas. They’ve got a little bit of everything – sandwiches, soups, pizza, salad, pastas, desserts and more. And with the most expensive menu item topping out at $9.50, you can make sure everyone leaves with a full stomach without emptying your wallet.
DINING
Looking to Oklahoma City has an extensive selection of unique restaurants and fine dining establishments that will satisfy any craving. Below are a few local dining options that are perfect for a night on the town.
Nonna’s Euro-American Ristoranté & Bar A Bricktown staple for nearly 10 years, Nonna’s Euro-American Ristoranté & Bar has the best of everything – great drinks, fabulous entrees, delectable desserts and more – all set in a renovated warehouse (but you’d never know once you step inside). Be sure to get a personal-size cream pie for dessert.
Sushi Neko Located on Western Avenue, Sushi Neko has what sushi-lovers want – an assortment of delicious and fresh sushi options. For those less adventurous, their menu also includes a number of Japanesestyle entrees – from chicken and salmon to steak and shrimp.
Ranch Steakhouse
As one of Oklahoma City’s most unique dining experiences, guests at VAST will dine on a whole new level. More than 720 feet above downtown Oklahoma City, VAST occupies the 49th floor of the tallest building in Oklahoma – the Devon Energy Center. Here you will enjoy fine cuisine and an unbeatable view of the entire city.
The Coach House Since 1985, The Coach House has been one of Oklahoma City’s finest upscale restaurants. Under the experienced hand of Chef Kurt Fleischfresser, The Coach House offers an ever-changing seasonal cuisine highlighting the best local produce and regional specialties, prepared with classical perfection.
