In this case, the name says it all – this district is full of adventure for the whole family. From the can’t-miss National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, to the rush of live horseracing at Remington Park Racing Casino and visiting Oklahoma City’s wildest residents at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, there’s plenty of fun for the young and young at heart. Go all in with the OKC Zoo’s Wild Encounters experiences. Go behind-the-scenes with an animal caretaker to get an up close look at some of the Zoo’s amazing animals. Sample Oklahoma City’s Western heritage at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. In addition to its world-class art and exhibits, this museum is also home to Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-thecentury cattle town.

Film Row Asian District Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific.
Want to experience an up-and-coming district right in the heart of downtown? Equal parts historic and revitalized, Film Row was once home to the film distribution offices for Hollywood’s major studios. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more.
Grab a bowl of phõ. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Favorites with the locals include Phõ Cuong and Phõ Lien Hoa.
Fun Food Starts Here Enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner, as well as live music and craft cocktails, at The Jones Assembly where the Instagram-worthy patios are a destination unto themselves. Or grab a Strawberry Cactus Pear hand tart for breakfast at Okay Yeah. The tart is reminiscent of a familiar childhood breakfast treat, but oh so much better, and pairs perfectly with their Ca Phe Sue Sa Vietnamese Coffee.
Eat beyond Asia. The district’s culinary influences travel far beyond Asian cuisine. Be sure to visit Cafe Kacao for a Guatemalan-style brunch. Or grab a cup of joe and a vegan meal from The Red Cup, another café that perfectly captures the bohemian and ecclectic vibe of this district.
Relive the rad ‘80s at Flashback RetroPub. With its vintage arcade games, Rubik’s Cube cocktail tables and ‘80s-themed karaoke, you’ll feel like you’ve gone “Back to the Future” at OKC’s only ‘80s-themed bar. Enjoy a drink and take on Mario, Donkey Kong, Qbert or any of the more than 30 arcade games. Leg warmers and Hammer pants are optional.
Get your kicks on Route 66. The Milk Bottle Building, located at 2426 North Classen Boulevard along old Route 66, was built in 1930 and is an icon of the Mother Road in OKC. The 350-square foot triangular building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Check out contemporary art. Known for its eclectic art galleries (many attached to working artists’ studios) and shops, as well as its distinctive Spanish Revival architecture, the Paseo Arts District has a bohemian vibe that’s great for exploring on foot. Situated around a curvy, tree-lined street, Paseo is home to more than 80 artists, plus shops, bars and restaurants. Embrace your inner artist. Whether you want to add to your art collection or brush up on your own artistic skills, this district will act as your muse and provide all the inspiration you need.
@dancetheghostwithme
Rub elbows with the locals at Paseo’s bars and restaurants. Paseo is surrounded by neighborhoods on all sides, so it makes sense that this district offers some of Oklahoma City’s favorite local hangouts. Be sure to check out the Paseo Grill, Picasso Café, the Other Room and Sauced, just to name a few.
@eatlikealocalokc
Explore Paseo during the First Friday Gallery Walk. Want to experience the best the district has to offer all at the same time? First Friday Gallery Walk happens (you guessed it) on the first Friday (6-10 p.m.) of each month. Opening receptions for featured artists and a fun street scene await you at the oldest art walk in Oklahoma City.
ABOUT OKC
Western Avenue From upscale to accessible, contemporary to antique, the Western Avenue district has a little bit of everything. From the local dives on Western avenue to the chic shops along Classen Curve, this district has you covered for shopping and eating. Explore Classen Curve. Some of OKC’s most fashionable shops are in the Classen Curve shopping area along Western Avenue between Northwest Grand Boulevard and Classen Boulevard. National retailers include lululemon athletica, Anthropologie and West Elm.
@rustandbonesokc
Shop local. Classen Curve has lots of local retailers too, like Balliet’s, On a Whim and Liberté. Outside Classen Curve, there are local favorites like Weldon Jack, which is part oldschool barbershop and part hip retailer with art, apparel, motorcycle gear and grooming products.
@blindarmadillo
Hunt for vintage and vinyl. If curated treasure hunting is more your style, visit one of Western Avenue’s many antique stores, like Antique Avenue. Western Avenue is also home to Guestroom Records, which sells new and old vinyl albums for your listening pleasure.
@choathouse
Dine Local. West on Western Avenue offers contemporary American food with favorites such as the Zucca Chips, but you’ve been warned – they are addictive. Stop in Big Sky Bread Co. for their daily offerings of made fresh daily cookies, muffins and rolls. For a large selection of beer paired with several TV’s, dine at RePUBlic Gastropub in Classen Curve. It’s a perfect spot to watch a game or go out on a date.

Uptown Deep Deuce
Uptown is gaining quite the local reputation as a fun, easy place to dine, shop and drink. The attractions are casual, very accessible and are largely owned by local proprietors.
The Deep Deuce District, located just north of Bricktown, was the heart of Oklahoma City’s AfricanAmerican neighborhood in the 1920s and 30s, and during that time the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both called Deep Deuce home, as did Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man.
Uptown, Funk You Up. The newly re-opened Tower Theatre adds live music options to the Uptown mix. Visitors get a true taste of Oklahoma culture while historic architecture from the heyday of Route 66 adds a neon glow to your adventures.
Explore Deep Deuce like a local. Deep Deuce is recapturing its glory days as a vibrant urban neighborhood. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like Stag Lounge, a whiskey club offering more than 250 bottles of whiskey and almost 400 spirits. Other local favorites include Slaughter’s Hall, Wedge Pizzeria, Leaf + Bean, Belle Kitchen, Urban Johnnie’s, Wheeze the Juice, and Anchor Down, which is a gourmet corn dog eatery (yes, we said gourmet) located in a shipping container. Trust us, it is worth trying. Get inspired by the art. Stop by [Artspace] at Untitled to view their many rotating exhibitions. Or if you feel inspired, sign up for one of their many creative workshops.
Get a taste of Uptown. Nationally recognized, locally loved, Uptown 23rd has long offered great food in a casual setting. Try The Drake for fresh seafood daily or a local favorite, Cheever’s, for classic American cuisine in a vintage flower shop. Pizzeria Gusto uses an authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza oven to make your meal. Or, savor soft Korean buns stuffed with plenty of options at UR/Bun as well as housemade soft-serve. Visit Guyutes for craft beer or The Rockford Cocktail Den and the Bunker Club for retro atmosphere. Nice weather? Hit The Pump Bar for a drink on the patio. Uptown with the family. Think you are a whiz at solving mysteries? Test your chops at The Escape OKC, a live-escape game where you have 60 minutes to solve the puzzles and mysteries of a locked room. The easiest game room has a 38 percent escape rate, so good luck. You’ll probably need it.

Shop local. Shopping local is easy in Midtown. Ladies can find the perfect outfit at Mode or Black Scintilla. For the men, Trade Men’s Wares has a collection of men’s clothing, bags, high-end grooming products and accessories. You can grab some fresh roasted coffee at Elemental Coffee Roasters. And Chirps and Cheers is one of the cutest stationery shops around with its picturesque window display and curated collection of paper and gift items. Get a strike at Dust Bowl. This 12-lane bowling alley harkens back to the heyday of bowling with its retro-inspired décor (think wood paneling and shag carpets). Located below Fassler Hall, you can bowl a few frames and then walk upstairs to enjoy beers and brats at this German-inspired beer garden. If you enjoy the vintage-bar vibe, take a short walk and pay a visit to R&J’s Supper Club as well. Nibble notable Midtown noshes.

Plaza District If you’re the sort that likes to check out the hip and happening, you’ll find it in the Plaza District; an enclave of locally-owned shops, neighborhood bars, quirky galleries and fun-and-funky restaurants. Named for the historic Plaza Theater (built in 1935), the area has become a hub for creativity and a magnet for local businesses. Its namesake theater is now the nationallyrenowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre, where you can catch live performances in season. Sample some of the best craft beer in Oklahoma. Oak & Oar lives up to its slogan of “Craft Beer and Craft Fare” by keeping 36 always-rotating Oklahoma beers on tap. Other popular restaurants in the district with extensive beer selections include The Mule, which offers up crafty grilled cheese sandwiches and beer battered fries, and Empire Slice House, where mind-blowing pizza is served until 2am Monday – Saturday and midnight on Sunday. Satisfy your sweet tooth. It doesn’t get much better than Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, a food truck turned permanent establishment that scoops up the best salted caramel ice cream in existence (in our humble opinion). Roxy’s Ice Cream pairs nicely with the nearby Pie Junkie’s tasty options. Buy pie by the slice or get the whole thing – we won’t judge. Shop for the perfect only-in-OKC gifts. Check out the t-shirt selection at Tree & Leaf or the affordable art and locally-sourced clothing, accessories and gifts at DNA Galleries or Collected Thread. They’re all steps away from one another.

There, you can get a single, a double or, if you dare, triple the beef with the Mother Tucker. Each comes with a mound of perfectly caramelized onions and your choice of additional toppings.

Oklahoma’s tremendous economic development over the past decade has also affected the growth of our craft beer industry. Local brewers are producing award-winning beers, like Black Mesa’s Gold Medal at the World Beer Fest for their Endless Skyway Bitter, and getting their products noticed well beyond Oklahoma City. COOP Ale Works has a presence in more than 1,000 locations, including four other states.
C O O P A L E W O R KS COOP Ale Works is not the oldest craft brewer in the state, but they are largely responsible for getting the craft-brewing ball rolling in Oklahoma. Their F5 (IPA), DNR (quad) and Native Amber are ubiquitous in bars and restaurants in the metro. They also have a selection of grocery store beers available locally, all of which you can sample at the brewery. COOP offers tours of their facility, including a walkthrough of the processes, every Saturday at “around” 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. They say “around” because they make beer for a living, and one of the reasons you choose that gig is so you don’t have to start everything on a rigid schedule. The tour is free, as are the samples. Their beers are available for purchase on site. COOP is open to the public for samples and purchases from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 1-5 p.m. Saturday.
B R I C K TOW N B R E W E RY A N D BELLE ISLE BREWERY The two best-known brewpubs in Oklahoma City are Bricktown Brewery and Belle Isle Brewery. Both are located close to the center of the city, and both have multiple, locally crafted brews. Bricktown Brewery keeps eight taps of madein-house local beers, and Belle Isle has seven. In keeping with the brewpub theme, both joints have extensive food menus that range from wings and nachos to burgers and entrees. Bricktown is open seven days a week, and Belle Isle is closed only on Sunday.

SHOPPING BY DISTRICT By Britta Newton-Tarron and staff
No trip to Oklahoma City is complete without a visit to some of the city’s many locally-owned gift shops, clothing stores, and home decor boutiques. This guide was created to help you navigate the many stores and shopping districts this city has to offer, allowing you to plan your perfect OKC shopping experience.
Automobile Alley Located north of OKC's Central Business District on Broadway Ave., Automobile Alley was developed in the 1920’s as a commercial district for the city's burgeoning auto industry. At that time, the late 19th century wood frame homes in the area were demolished to make way for the iconic two to five story brick buildings the district is known for today. These charming buildings with expansive glass windows have been renovated to make way for many of the city's premier shops and restaurants. Rawhide - 1007 N. Broadway Ave. - This boutique offers a stylish take on western culture. Offerings include ranchstyle home furnishings, clothing, and accessories. Choose Rawhide to take a piece of the old west home with you and add a bit of cowgirl flare to your life. Plenty Mercantile - 807 N Broadway Ave. - Products found in this "mercantile" always check boxes for sustainability, authenticity, and stylishness. Plaza District For far too long the commercial strip known as The Plaza was full of cobwebs and memories of the good old days. Thanks to the efforts of a handful of small businesses and neighbors, 16th St. between Penn and Classen has been revitalized into the family friendly, walkable shopping and dining area it was meant to be! Bad Granny’s Bazaar - 1759 NW 16th. - One of Plaza’s pioneer businesses, Bad Granny’s is a staple for second hand shopping in the city. Each vendor has a unique collection of vintage, costume, and nostalgia to keep you coming back. Bison Shop - 1745 NW 16th Suite F4 - Located in a community space tucked just off of 16th St. in a murallined alley, this adorable shop always has a fresh collection of gifts and goods thoughtfully selected by owner Blakely Hiner. Collected Thread - 1705 NW 16th - Much like the Plaza district itself, this “handmade shop” has grown and evolved over the years. Today Collected Thread is the community’s first stop for children’s clothing, jewelry or accessories. Honorable mentions: DNA Galleries, Tree and Leaf, Reference Point.

This exclusive residential community was developed by Dr. G.A. Nichols in 1929 as an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily city life. Residents enticed to move to Nichols Hills (then the northern edge of the city) were motivated as much by its high end shopping plazas as they were by its beautiful sprawling homes. While stores here certainly still retain the prestige this district is known for, there is something here for everyone. ARTS
ARTS IN OKC By Greg Horton and staff Oklahoma City’s art scene runs year round, so depending upon your preference, there are options in visual and performing arts every day. Most of the city’s arts options are located in or near downtown, making it very easy to access more than one choice. And the best part, Oklahoma City offers unique art that you can’t find anywhere else. Here’s what you can expect next time you’re in town.
The Oklahoma City Ballet The Oklahoma City Ballet has expanded its season to include five shows, with only The Nutcracker repeating annually. The ballet company is comprised of dancers from around the world, including Japan, Korea, Brazil and Ukraine, as well as a few homegrown artists from Oklahoma. Thanks in part to artists like principal dancers Miki Kawamura and Dayoung Jung, the company has achieved international respect, and their popularity in the state grows every year. In addition to The Nutcracker, the 2017/2018 season features Swan Lake (Oct. 20-22) with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, as well as a show for all ages: The Little Mermaid (Feb. 16-18). The season always concludes with a triple bill, typically one that includes a modern dance piece, and the 2018 triple bill is Petite Mort (April 13-15).

21c Museum Hotel The 21c Museum Hotel offers the public free access to their museum 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The bulk of the museum is located on the ground floor of the hotel, but smaller installations are available on guest floors, as well. On Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 pm, the hotel offers a free docent tour to the public. The museum at 21c focuses
primarily on modern art, and the installations rotate between hotels in other cities. Currently, the Oklahoma City 21c has OFF-SPRING: New Generations, an exhibit that explores cultural, domestic, institutional and religious rituals. The exhibit is on display through April 2018.
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Over its more than sixty-year history, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum has attracted more than ten million visitors from around the world. Many come to see classic works by legendary Western artists Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and James Earle Fraser, but the museum also has an extensive collection of contemporary artists. Through April 2018, the museum is featuring a collection of cartoons and comics by “cowboy artist” Tom Ryan. Ryan’s iconic images of the 6666 Ranch near Guthrie, Texas, helped shape Western art, especially cowboy art, but he had a long career as an illustrator and designer before moving into Western art. This remarkable collection, Cartoons & Comics: The Early Art of Tom Ryan, includes sketches and drawings from as far back as Ryan’s high school and Coast Guard years.

E AT A R O U N D THE CLOCK By Greg Horton
Breakfast Breakfast may have become one of the most fast food focused of all meals. Some of that is due to hours that restaurants keep. Outside of breakfast joints like IHOP and Waffle House, many full-service restaurants don’t even open for breakfast, and many that do don’t open until sometime between 7:30 and 9 a.m. That’s not terribly helpful if your day starts at 8 a.m. or before.Fortunately, Oklahoma City has several breakfast options for early risers. That means breakfast is available before 7 a.m., and in the case of some of these restaurants, as early as 6 a.m.
Sunnyside Diner 916 NW 6th St.
Flint 15 N. Robinson Ave. Flint starts serving breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Get the biscuits and gravy. Seriously. Just get them, and then add a side of their ridiculously good bacon. Think all bacon is the same? You won’t after trying Flint’s thick, peppered bacon. Another local favorite: buckwheat pancakes with rum, banana sauce. You can get traditional syrup if you like, or roll up a sausage link with grape jelly like our grandparents did. They were probably the ones who taught us to love breakfast anyway.
Sunnyside Diner has a counter like the diners you went to growing up. The coffee is very good and the smiley sun on your mug helps put you in the proper mood. Plus, the food is really good. The Classic is eggs cooked to order, and you can sub brisket or pulled pork for the more traditional breakfast meats. Eggs in Purgatory is a local favorite: poached eggs in spicy marinara, and you’ll want the sourdough toast to get all the marinara.
Esca Vitae 1114 Classen Dr. One of the newest breakfast spots in town is Esca Vitae, a European-style bakery with excellent coffee and freshly baked pastries. The morning roll is a local favorite, featuring brown sugar and orange zest. They’re baked fresh
every morning. Not a sweets person? The lattice is a beautifully prepared pastry with lattice crust, ham and cheese, and paired with a cup of coffee, you’re out the door for about $6. Their specialty, though, is a French toast breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, pepper jelly and fresh tomatoes. It’s spicy, sweet, savory and wonderful.
Hatch 1101 N. Broadway Ave. Hatch in Automobile Alley is one of the new “diners” we see popping up all over the country. They’re not diners in the traditional sense, but Hatch gets a nod because they open at 6:00 a.m., the food is excellent, and the menu is creative. There is one thing you simply have to have, and that’s the hash brown tumblers. Imagine if hash browns and tater tots had kids. Yes, that’s them. Enjoy. WWW.VISITOKC.COM

Brunch Adding eggs to a dish does not necessarily make it a brunch item, and while it seems nearly every concept offers brunch these days, Oklahoma City is home to several restaurants that have always done brunch well.
Picasso Café
La Baguette Bistro
3009 Paseo
7408 N. May Ave.
Finally, if you’re feeling a little more hippie-esque, head over to the Paseo Arts District for a super casual brunch at Picasso Café. While their breakfast burrito is by far the most popular item on the menu among locals, they are also well known as one of the few quality vegetarian brunch options.
Ever tried French country dining? La Baguette Bistro serves breakfast seven days a week, so brunch is technically available every day. Befitting a French bistro, the menu includes excellent hollandaise options, fluffy omelettes and savory crepes. The Crepes Normandie with spinach and bacon are a local favorite, and the Croque Madame is hands-down the best in Oklahoma City. The Buthion brothers keep an extensive wine list, including the best by-the-glass rosé selection, which, again, is appropriate behavior from real Frenchmen.
The Hutch on Avondale 6437 Avondale Dr. The Hutch is the newest iteration of one of the city’s most beloved restaurants: The Coach House. A model of fine dining for thirty years, The Coach House reinvented itself for a new generation, including passing the ownership baton to the founder’s son. Brunch features a fantastic black angus burger with bacon, and be sure to add a fried egg or pimento cheese. The breakfast burrito uses beef tenderloin with potatoes and white cheddar for a hearty breakfast. Classic options like eggs benedict and omelets are also available, as is a kid’s breakfast with scrambled eggs and French toast sticks. A full bar with excellent wine list is available, as is one of the city’s best whiskey selections. We’re not going to judge how you brunch.
Mary Eddy’s at the 21c Museum Hotel 900 W. Main St. An injection of new blood can be really good for a city, and 21c brought the metro a whole new flavor profile with Chef Jason Campbell’s food at Mary Eddy’s. The Florida native specializes in Gulf States cuisine, something that was difficult to find around the metro before his arrival. All the menus change regularly, as the restaurant attempts to use fresh and local ingredients as much
as possible. However, the brunch menu consistently features an outstanding burger, the city’s best charcuterie (cured in-house), a delicious fried chicken biscuit and wonderful use of local fruit, as in the local peach salad with ham, hazelnuts, mustard greens and lemon vinaigrette dressing. Look for chef-y takes on Okie favorites, too, as when chef makes his own fromscratch “Frito chili pie,” featuring house-made corn chips.
Cheever’s 2409 N. Hudson Ave. Cheever’s Cafe has long been a brunch favorite in Oklahoma City. The eatery specializes in comfort food with a Southwestern flair. Their signature dinner dish—a chicken-fried steak the size of a dinner plate—is served in a smaller portion for brunch, and it’s also the star of Cowgirl Benedict, which comes with skillet potatoes and red chile hollandaise. Other popular favorites include roasted chicken enchiladas and the green chile pork stack. Lighter fare is on the menu, as is a full bar that includes a solid wine list.

Lunch Oklahoma City’s diverse culinary landscape is most obvious at lunch. While breakfast and dinner options abound, there are more dining options for weekday lunch than any other time slot. Given the city’s size, it often makes the most sense to eat near where you are, and fortunately there are excellent choices in every quadrant of the city.
The Mantel Wine Bar & Bistro 201 E. Sheridan Ave. Bricktown is one of the hottest spots in Oklahoma City for dining and entertainment, and The Mantel has been a fine dining favorite since 1999. Like dinner, lunch at The Mantel moves at a leisurely pace, so you can take time and enjoy the fresh seafood—flown in three times a week from the Gulf, East Coast and Hawaii. You may have heard not to get seafood in a land-locked state, and that was probably true before there were motorized vehicles, but it comes in fresh every day now, and The Mantel does fresh fish like nobody else in town. Choose from an excellent selection of steaks, chops and salads too, as well as one of the city’s most extensive wine lists, featuring more than forty by-the-glass options.

Packard’s New American Kitchen 201 NW 10th St. Primarily known for their outstanding rooftop patio bar, Packard’s is also a lunchtime favorite in the Midtown area. Featuring an eclectic menu of comfort food, vegetarian options, and the rightly famous Piggy Burger, Packard’s delivers amazing flavors at reasonable prices. Because the menu is diverse, lunch is easy for a group, even a group of picky eaters. The lentil curry served over basmati rice is popular with local vegetarians, and the vegetable plate is one of the city’s best. The daily board offers delicious menu additions like fish and chips every Friday, and other features from Baja tacos to Cajun specialties.
Pizzeria Gusto 2415 N. Walker Ave. In a hurry for lunch? Gusto serves Neapolitan-style pizza almost as fast as you order it. The custom-built Stefano Ferrara oven burns at more than 700 degrees, so your pizza is done in less than two minutes. The full-service pizzeria features traditional pizzas with a twist, like the Margherita the Queen with buffalo mozzarella. You can build your own, too. A large selection of small plates is available, including vegetarian and vegan options, as well as lamb chops, gnocchi and what are perhaps the city’s best meatballs. Gusto features a full bar with an outstanding selection of local beers.

Dinner Dinner should be an experience, not just a meal. In Oklahoma City, there is a select group of restaurateurs who have been providing outstanding dining options for decades, with delicious food, impeccable service and remarkable wine lists.
Vast
The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro
Ranch Steakhouse
333 W. Sheridan Ave, 49th floor
6418 N. Western Ave.
3000 W. Britton Rd.
Built to be the crown jewel of Oklahoma City dining, Vast provides the state’s best view for lunch and dinner. Located on the 49th floor of the Devon Tower, this destination restaurant features fine dining with Oklahoma flair. Helmed by the state’s most decorated chef, Kurt Fleischfresser, Vast offers true fine dining, as well as a more casual experience in the cocktail lounge—full menu is available. The signature dishes are the seared gulf shrimp with sweet potato polenta and the rack of lamb, featuring smoked lamb ribs and roasted loin. The wine list is so extensive that it’s probably best just to ask one of the well-trained staff for help. Reservations are strongly recommended, and a dress code is enforced.
The Metro has been a gold standard in local fine dining for nearly thirty years. Owner LaVeryl Lower made a conscious decision 28-years ago not to put televisions in her restaurant—a bold move in a state obsessed with college football. Consequently, The Metro is a go-to for business lunch and special occasion dinners. The lamb potstickers are an absolute must, as is the seafood special. Locally, The Metro is famous for veal liver and onions, too. The wine list features more than 400 selections, and the by-the-glass list is the city’s finest.
Oklahoma has long been a cattle state, and while it pains us to do so, it’s only fair to mention that we, along with our neighbor state to the south, produce some of the best beef in the world. The quality of our beef is on display at Ranch Steakhouse seven nights a week. All of Ranch’s steaks and chops are certified prime, including the remarkable prime rib eye, and while there are toppings available, like compound truffle butter, sometimes it’s just best to let the steak speak for itself. If you’re not a steak person, there are excellent chops, salads and seafood options.

Dessert Dessert can be the finale of a meal or it can be a stand-alone indulgence. You will find no shortage of the former in Oklahoma City, and there are two dessert specialists that are exemplars in the latter category. As luck would have it, they are located in the same area: Plaza District.
Roxy’s Ice Cream
the coffee. Customers also have the option to purchase desserts to go at the bakery counter. Choose from chocolate mice, truffles, classic French pastries, fruit tarts and even local Oklahoma favorites like pecan pie.
1732 NW 16th St. Hang around Oklahoma City long enough and you’re going to hear someone mention an ice cream sandwich from Roxy’s. It’s very likely they will speak of it as if it is magical. That’s because it sort of is. Roxy’s makes their own ice cream in-house to stay as true as possible to their oldtime ethos. The ice cream sandwiches use fresh-baked cookies, so everything you taste is made from scratch. There is at least one vegan option per day too, and now a second location is open in northwest Oklahoma City at 12220 N. MacArthur Blvd.
whole trip to OKC. And if it’s local Okie flavor you’re looking for, get a slice of the Drunken Turtle—graham cracker crust, chocolate fudge filling, topped with salted bourbon caramel. Don’t worry; there is fresh brewed coffee on hand to wash it down.
Pie Junkie
La Baguette Bistro
1711 NW 16th St. Pie Junkie is one of the places you never hear about unless you’re a local. That might be because Okies like it so much we want to keep it all to ourselves. Seriously. They make a limited number of pies per day, and when they are out, they’re out. However, it seems the word is getting out, as they’ve been featured in “Vogue” and “USA Today.” If you think you’ve had key lime pie before, you need to try Pie Junkie’s. Cheever’s Cafe 2409 N. Hudson Ave.
7408 N. May Ave. The Buthion brothers were on a crosscountry vacation from their native France when they came to Oklahoma City. They never left. After a brief partnership in three other concepts, the brothers took sole ownership of their bistro at the turn of the millennium. The dessert counter and bakery have been a staple of the metro’s north side ever since. Many of the items are available on the dessert menu, and the food is excellent at La Baguette, as is
Located in one of the city’s most historic buildings—the first baby born in Oklahoma City owned the building as an adult—Cheever’s Cafe serves regional comfort food and some amazing desserts. Best known for their dinner-plate-sized serving of chicken fried steak, Cheever’s does everything to the same scale. The chocolate cake is seven layers of creamy indulgence. You’ll need a to-go box for the remainder. The roasted pecan ice cream ball is a local favorite, too. Vanilla ice cream is rolled in brown sugar and red chile-seasoned, oven-roasted pecans and then finished with chocolate sauce. Decadent doesn’t quite say enough. If you must go lighter, the strawberry sweet biscuits with lemon curd and whipped cream is a brilliant and tasty take on strawberry shortcake.

QUINTESSENTIAL OKC By Greg Horton
Oklahoma cuisine is hard to categorize. You are as likely to find biscuits and gravy as Vietnamese food, and our barbecue ranges from Fort Worth-style, to Kansas City to the Carolinas. Still, there are some dishes that locals consider quintessentially Oklahoma City.
Lamb Fries
Pho
Barbecue
Onion Burgers
Cattlemen’s Steakhouse has been in operation in Stockyards City for more than one hundred years. For a good part of that time, they’ve been locally famous for their lamb fries. While many people are familiar with calf fries, lamb fries are actually more tender. The overall experience is of delicious fried meatballs dipped in ranch dressing or cocktail sauce. If you’re an adventurous eater, this is a must.
Due to an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s, Oklahoma City is now home to some of the best pho in North America. The noodle dish is usually made with beef stock, but vegetarian pho is available in most locations. If you’re unfamiliar with the Vietnamese staple, the soup is hearty and fragrant with spicy options available. Pho Lien Hoa is the standard for pho in the metro, but there are a dozen good options, including Pho Ca Dao and Pho Cuong.
Oklahoma City is in the heart of beef country, and it’s located almost midway between two barbecue Meccas: Kansas City and Fort Worth. The barbecue style here ranges from sweet and smoky, to savory and spicy, and Chef Jason Campbell at Mary Eddy’s has been known to throw in some vinegary, mustardy Carolina barbecue, too. Maple’s uses prime beef to make their brisket, and it might be the best in Oklahoma City. For the other barbecue, try the dry-rubbed pork ribs at Iron Star, or hit longtime, local favorite Leo’s for pulled pork and bologna.
One thing that was definitely created in Oklahoma is the onion burger. While locals argue about who came first, they’re pretty settled on who is now the best. If you can get into Nic’s Grill, we encourage you to do so. The place is tiny, but the burgers are widely believed to be the best in the state. If you don’t want to stand in line, hit Tucker’s Onion Burgers for an excellent alternative, including a turkey version, or Irma’s Burger Shack, where you can get an onion burger with our local NoName Ranch beef.
