ABOUT OKC

O N LY I N O K C Great events fill the calendar year-round in OKC. But each summer, there are some truly unique, mark-your-calendar, only-in-OKC events. Here’s the 411 on some of the top annual events in the 405.

Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon – April 30 The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon combines the personal challenges of running a marathon with the remembrance of a shared national tragedy. The marathon is centered on the mission of the Memorial and starts with 168 seconds of silence at the Start Line to remember the 168 persons killed in the April 19, 1995, bombing. More than 24,000 runners from nearly 50 states and 10 foreign countries participate each year in this Boston-Marathon-qualifying USATF-sanctioned event on a certified 26.2 mile, single loop course. Runner’s World Magazine listed it as “one of 12 must-run marathons in the world.” Those looking to run have a choice of the full marathon, half, 5K, relay and kids marathon.

ABOUT OKC

Adventure District In this case, the name says it all – this district is full of adventure for the whole family. From the can’t-miss National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, to the rush of live horseracing at Remington Park Racing Casino, to visiting Oklahoma City’s wildest residents at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, there’s plenty of fun for the young and young at heart. Make friends with the animal kingdom at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens. You can feed giraffes at the Giraffe Feeding Platform or Lorikeets at Explorikeet Adventures, and you can touch stingrays at Stingray Bay. Sample Oklahoma City’s Western heritage at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. In addition to its world-class art and exhibits, this museum is also home to Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-the-century cattle town. Experience the thrill of scientific discovery at Science Museum Oklahoma. Kids of all ages will love exploring eight acres of hands-on science experiences with thousands of space, aviation and cultural artifacts in the mix. This is especially true in the “CurioCity” exhibit, a 20,000-square-foot area of discovery that uses interactive devices and creative settings to encourage learning through play.

ABOUT OKC

Film Row Asian District Oklahoma City’s foodie scene is alive and well in the Asian District, where an influx of Vietnamese immigrants in the 1970s created a hub now known for its Asian fusion cuisine. Here you will find some of the best Asian restaurants in OKC, including authentic Vietnamese food that rivals any found this side of the Pacific. Grab a bowl of pho. The Asian District is best experienced through food, and it’s hard to beat this traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. Favorites with the locals include Pho Cuong and Pho Lien Hoa. Eat beyond Asia.

Want to experience an up-and-coming district right in the heart of downtown? Equal parts historic and revitalized, Film Row was once home to the film distribution offices for Hollywood’s major studios. It’s now home to a mix of artistic businesses, locally-owned restaurants and more. Grab a bite at one of OKC’s family-owned eateries. Located at the corner of Sheridan and Lee avenues, Noir Bistro & Bar offers soups, salads and sandwiches made with fresh seasonal ingredients. Grab a slice of pizza at Joey’s Pizzeria or plan for a nice dinner at one of the newest restaurants to hit Film Row, Mary Eddy’s at 21C Museum Hotel. We highly suggest their charcuterie board! Relive the rad ‘80s at Flashback RetroPub.

The district’s culinary influences travel far beyond Asian cuisine. Be sure to visit Cafe Kacao for a Guatemalanstyle brunch. Or grab a cup of joe and a vegetarian meal from The Red Cup, another café that perfectly captures the bohemian and ecclectic vibe of this district.

With its vintage arcade games, Rubik’s Cube cocktail tables and ‘80s-themed karaoke, you’ll feel like you’ve gone “Back to the Future” at OKC’s only ‘80s-themed bar. Enjoy a drink and take on Mario, Donkey Kong, Qbert or any of the more than 30 arcade games. Leg warmers and Hammer pants are optional.

Get your kicks on Route 66.

Check out Oklahoma art.

Along old Route 66 stands the 1930s Milk Bottle Building, one of Route 66’s most iconic buildings. The 350-square foot triangular building sits across Classen Boulevard and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Contemporary art is at the heart of the 21c Museum Hotel experience with rotating exhibitions and cultural programming, and it’s always free even if you’re not staying the night. The misting steel tree welcomes you as you arrive, and purple penguins are everywhere in sight.

ABOUT OKC

Automobile Alley Located north of downtown along Broadway Avenue, the Automobile Alley district was originally home to the city’s car dealerships, a fact that is immortalized in the neon signs that still hang from its original buildings. The past and the present combine to make this district effortlessly cool with lots to offer, including some of Oklahoma City’s best shopping, dining and nightlife. Bring your appetite to one of the local restaurants. Cultivar Mexican Kitchen delivers an innovate take on traditional Mexican fare with fresh, sustainably-sourced ingredients from local farms and other trusted sources. Their guacamole is a can’t-miss. For a refined take on the urban chophouse concept, Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse offers wood-fired meats and handcrafted cocktails. Wet your whistle with whiskey or wine. For wine lovers, Waters Edge Winery offers more than 50 different locally-made wines from the world’s finest grapes. You can even create, bottle, cork and label your own private vintage to commemorate your visit. For stronger libations, check out Sidecar Barley & Wine Bar. Sidecar offers beer and wine on tap, single-malt scotch and local house cocktails. And with bar food that consists of smoked salmon, gourmet paninis and fresh hummus, you can count on this bar to elevate your happy hour to the next level. Treat yourself to a souvenir at one of the local shops. Be sure to visit The Factory, an upscale clothing boutique; SHOP GOOD, a philanthropic-minded shop offering jewelry, clothing and gifts; PLENTY Mercantile, a sustainably-focused shop that offers a variety of goods; and Rawhide, a luxury ranch lifestyle store with everything from boots to custom furniture.

ABOUT OKC

Midtown On the northern edge of downtown and just west of Automobile Alley, the Midtown district connects the hustle and bustle of downtown with the stately historic neighborhoods to its north. With a mix of local restaurants, neighborhood pubs and unique shops, it’s a great place to experience the best of OKC’s recent urban renaissance. Shop Local. Shopping local is easy in Midtown. Ladies can find the perfect outfit at Mode or Black Scintilla. For the men, Trade Men’s Wares has a collection of men’s clothing, bags, high-end grooming products and accessories. You can grab some fresh roasted coffee at Elemental Coffee Roasters. And Chirps and Cheers is one of the cutest stationery shops around with its picturesque window display and curated collection of paper and gift items. Strike out at Dust Bowl. This 12-lane bowling alley harkens back to the heyday of bowling with its retro-inspired décor (think wood paneling and shag carpets). Located below Fassler Hall, you can bowl a few frames and then walk upstairs to enjoy beers and brats at this Germaninspired beer garden. Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, this former warehouse district is filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. From taking a cruise along the Bricktown Canal to catching an Oklahoma City Dodger’s game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown is a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. And just north of Bricktown is historic Deep Deuce, where you can find more great restaurants and nightlife options.

ABOUT OKC

Bricktown

Schedule a play date at Brickopolis. Brickopolis has amped up the district’s level of familyfriendly fun by offering miniature golf, laser tag, arcade games and multiple dining options. Enjoy a night out on the town. Bricktown has plenty of nightlife options, but we recommend the rock-and-roll dueling pianos of Michael Murphy’s. Part concert, part comedy roast, this show is sure to have you rolling with laughter and tapping your toes to the request-driven music. Cruise the mile-long Bricktown Canal on a Bricktown Water Taxi. This 40-minute trip is the perfect way to tour through Bricktown, from the eastern edge of downtown all the way to the northern edge of the Oklahoma River. All taxis are staffed by ambassadors that narrate points of interest along the way and give a feel for the unique history and culture of the area. Explore Deep Deuce like a local. The Deep Deuce District, located just north of Bricktown, was the heart of Oklahoma City’s African-American neighborhood in the 1920s and 30s, and during that time the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Music legends Jimmy Rushing and Charlie Christian both called Deep Deuce home, as did Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like WSKY Lounge, a whisky club offering more than 250 bottles of whisky and almost 400 spirits. Other local favorites include Slaughter’s Hall, Leaf+Bean, Belle Kitchen, Urban Johnnie and Anchor Down, which is a gourmet corn dog eatery (yes, we said gourmet) located in a shipping container. Trust us, it is worth trying.

C O K C TA I L S by Greg Horton Oklahoma City has a remarkable abundance of talented mixologists, and our craft cocktail culture has matured rapidly as a result. Local bartenders infuse their own spirits, make their own syrups in house, and even create their own bitters and shrubs. You will ďŹ nd talented bartenders in many local joints, and we suggest you start with these four.

The Garrison Finish Ludivine Black-tea-infused Bourbon is mixed with lemon juice, agave nectar and a blackberry-thyme shrub to create a cocktail that is equal parts sweet and sour. The contrasts are startling and layered. The bartenders at Ludivine are some of the most creative in Oklahoma City, and they also specialize in creating cocktails according to your own tastes. Sit at the bar, have a Garrison Finish or a seasonal cocktail, and then let their bartenders experiment to make you a custom cocktail.

The See-Through Carré The Hutch on Avondale Managing partner Kyle Fleischfresser was one of the driving forces behind the craft cocktail movement in Oklahoma City, and he’s carried his love of mixology into the bar at The Hutch. The See-Through Carré is one of Fleischfresser’s creations, using one of his favorite spirits: rye whiskey. He’s also in love with Bourbon, which will be obvious when you see the back bar. The blend of unaged rye and immature brandy make for a fascinating, complex cocktail, with plenty of kick, but nice floral, tropical and candied notes too.

LOCAL BREWS Oklahoma City craft breweries have been producing outstanding local beers for more than a decade. Don’t miss out on these local favorites and award winners.

Black Mesa Endless Skyway Bitter This is a World Beer Cup gold medal winner, and its name comes from a lyric from Oklahoma’s own Woody Guthrie, giving locals even more reasons to love it. Black Mesa consistently produces remarkably balanced beers, but this is the flagship. Their beers are available on draught all over the city.

Anthem IPA While many examples of this popular style can be bitter bombs, Anthem went for a balanced, enjoyable brew. Pine and citrus come through, thanks in large part to the hops, but the floral notes round out a very quaffable beer. Anthem’s taproom is open for tastings and purchases Monday through Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.

Elk Valley Coffee Nemesis

COOP Ale Works Native Amber

This is one of the city’s newest breweries, and the guys like to call themselves brewers who like beer as much as beer drinkers. In other words, they let the beer speak for itself. The Nemesis is an Imperial Stout that is rich, malty and assertive without being aggressive. The Elk Valley taproom is open Thursday through Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m.

Native Amber is an excellent introduction to the brewery that pushed the OKC craft brewing industry into high gear in 2009. It’s malty, citrusy and approachable. COOP’s taproom is open for tastings and purchases Thursday and Friday from 4 to 8:00 pm and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

The space is home to an eclectic collection of businesses, including the Plant Shoppe and a wood workshop. Their hand tarts are reminiscent of a childhood breakfast treat, but oh so much better. The Strawberry Cactus Pear pairs perfectly with their Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese Coffee). Take it to go or settle in. Okay Yeah Co has no ego. It’s totally approachable and a refreshing way to start the day. 46

Here you’ll find local entrepreneurs in their pseudo-office, business meetings in progress, students studying and friends chatting. Elemental is a local roastery and coffee shop. The coffee is direct-sourced, traveling from all over the world to await a tumble in the big red roaster that sits in the corner. Can coffee get any fresher? We recommend you taste it in its truest form - a pour over. Everyone’s welcome here – whether vegans, vegetarians, meatlovers or gluten free, everyone unites at the common tables. Grab a breakfast burrito or sandwich and a locally baked, sensibly sweet Holey Roller’s Donut – a local favorite is Lavender Vanilla. You can also find Holey Rollers rolling around town in their adorable retro fab trailer. Find a seat and cozy up with some coffee.

Biscuits ‘n’ Gravy and a Thank You Very Matcha Cocktail from Sunnyside Diner Make a stop at Sunnyside Diner where, as they say, it’s always Sunday morning. Pull up a seat at the bar for a quick meal or settle in at a table or booth and take your time. Sentimental, cozy and reminiscent of a small town diner, the food at Sunnyside Diner is anything but small. Expect heaping portions, hot off the griddle and fast to your table. Their biscuits are tall and square, covered in housemade gravy, topped with cheddar cheese and finished with two Sunnyside eggs. They’ll keep the coffee flowing, in true diner fashion. If you’re feeling adventurous, get a Thank You Very Matcha cocktail with white rum, muddled basil, matcha green tea simple syrup, lemon and topped with soda.

Brunch Tikal Breakfast and EÔTÉ Coffee from Cafe Kacao

Chicken Fried Steak and Brunch Punch from Cheever’s Adding an egg does not make it brunch. Not everything deserves an egg and certainly not everything needs an egg. Some mornings, especially weekend mornings, you wake up and want to jump straight to lunch - that’s what brunch was made for, right? Cheever’s Chicken Fried Steak could easily cover all three meals for the day - they aren’t messing around with their Oklahomasized serving topped with house-made jalapeno cream gravy and red-skinned garlic mashed potatoes. Start with the Brunch Punch, which varies on the whim of the bartender each weekend. It’s a special treat and made to share.

Guatemalan fare as authentic as the smiling faces of the staff can be found at Cafe Kacao. The Del Cid family knows their way around the kitchen and has found their way into the hearts of OKC. It’s a difficult choice, but a can’t-miss suggestion for brunch is the Tikal Breakfast. Named after an ancient Mayan city, the Tikal breakfast covers all the essentials of a Guatemalan breakfast - Carne Asada flank steak, Longaniza (Guatemalan sausage), scrambled eggs, relish, refried black beans and plantains. If you’re feeling in the mood for something sweet, order a side of mosh or a Good Morning Mango Pancake to share with the table. Your coffee cup will never run dry at Kacao when you order a cup of locally-roasted EÔTÉ Coffee. You can also try one of their EÔTÉ espresso creations like the Horchata Latte or the Crème Brûlée Latte.

Oklahoma Pancake and A.M. Hero from Hatch Not a morning person? Hatch OKC may just convert you. It’s such a happy place with food that will turn any morning into a good mood. The Oklahoma Pancake is not only adorable, it’s delicious, using local pecans and bacon. The Chieftain's Revenge is full of flavor and will leave you full. Rough morning after last night? The A.M. Hero to the rescue, made with locallybrewed Anthem Arjuna, Cointreau, orange juice and a house sour mix. WWW.VISITOKC.COM

Lunch Queso Fundido and Tacos from Revolución Taqueria & Cantina

Wood-Fired Pizza, Salad and Dessert from The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen & Food Truck Both their food truck and newly opened restaurant are equipped with a woodfired (and only wood-fired) oven that imparts an excellent, artisan touch to their perfectly paired toppings that unite to put a modern twist on classic pizza. Try the Matt, with so many flavors you won’t know it’s vegetarian, or the Samwise, which features cream cheese, bacon and jalapeno (did we have you at bacon?). Don’t let the name fool you though: The Hall Family can do more than sling dough. Add a salad and dessert to really round out your meal. Get the Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie and have a friend get the daily dessert so you can have the best of both. 48

Would you like a peek at the OKC locals in their natural habitat? Go to Revolución. With Chihuahua & Monterey jack cheeses, house chorizo verde and pickled Fresno chile, Revolución’s Queso Fundido is made to share. Share it so you don’t get too full, because you have to have the tacos. They keep it simple, but the flavor is anything but. The Cauliflower Al Pastor made with caramelized onion and pineapple is a great option for vegetarians or meat eaters alike. The Barbacoa Flautas are excellently crispy and flavorful. Round out your meal with a Kicking Mule. You’ll be kicking your heels up while headed out the door, or keep the vibes going and settle in at the bar. Their tequila selection is impressive and they serve it up right.

Weinerschnitzel from Ingrid’s Kitchen Willkommen auf Ingrid’s Kitchen, where they offer traditional German dishes as well as American deli offerings. When at Ingrid’s, order Weinerschnitzel, a plate-sized serving with sauerkraut, red cabbage, German potato salad and house-baked bread. The food is authentic and polished, and the atmosphere is quirky and entertaining. On Saturdays you’ll find a live band and the regulars dancing. Be warned, you won’t be able to leave without something extra when you see their bakery case full of homemade cookies, cake, bread, pastries and bagels.

Dinner Beef Skirt Adobo Fajitas and Frozen Avocado Margarita from Barrio’s Fine Mexican Dishes

Pork Chop and Paired Wine from Packard’s New American Kitchen Packard’s New American Kitchen takes its name from the former Packard Automobile dealership in which it’s housed. Their service is consistently polished and welcoming. Their interior is beautiful and full of history. Their bar selection is carefully curated and manned by some of the nicest bartenders in town. You’ll know this by how many locals settle in there. Their fare changes seasonally, but you’ll always find Chef McKenna’s Pork Chop, perfectly cooked and accompanied with hearty, seasonal sides. Try a wine flight or ask what pairs best. Before you skip merrily out the door, order another round and a Cracked Caramel Sundae to share with the table. Can’t make it for dinner? Be sure to check out their award-winning brunch. They were named one of the 50 best places for brunch in the country by Food Network this year.

Barrio’s may be the only OKC restaurant that boasts as much patio seating as indoor seating. If the weather’s nice, or on the verge of nice, you can guarantee the patio will be buzzing. A little chilly in the evening? They’ll light the fire, provide blankets, and the staff will don serapes. Toasty? They’ll keep the ice water flowing. The decor is carefully crafted to accompany the unique blend of flavors - tex-mex, cali-lite, authentic street food. We suggest you start with the Valencia Orange & Salmon Ceviche with plantain chips and order the Beef Skirt Adobo Fajitas. They’ll keep the housemade chips and salsa coming to your heart’s content. The Frozen Avocado Margarita is refreshing and will cool down any lingering heat of a perfectly spiced dish.

Seared Beef Ceviche and Fried Brussels Sprouts from Guernsey Park Guernsey Park is nestled behind other local hideouts in Uptown and named for the street their tri-level building sits on. A tip of the hat to the Asian District just north of Guernsey, they offer a modern translation of Asian fare. Start with the Seared Beef Ceviche and Fried Brussels Sprouts and let the menu guide you on a culinary adventure. Wherever that journey takes you, be sure to close with Carrot Cake and their twist on Vietnamese Coffee using locally made liqueur Prairie Wolf Dark.

QUINTESSENTIAL O K C E AT S : Lamb Fries from Cattlemen’s Steakhouse If you have to ask, you may not want to know. While this breaded and fried delicacy isn’t exclusive to Oklahoma City, it is a must-try item on the menu of one of OKC’s most beloved restaurants: Cattlemen’s Steakhouse. Often erroneously referred to as Calf Fries, Cattlemen’s serves Lamb Fries. The reason for this? Consistency. Let’s just say Calf Fries don’t make the cut for Cattlemen’s.

Steak from Red Prime Oklahomans look for any reason to eat steak. A steak dinner from Red Prime offers high-end dining with a modern flair. They offer prime cut, aged beef and wagyu. Choose a crust and sauce for your steak. We recommend the brown sugar and sea salt and the creamy horseradish sauce. Their other menu offerings are all created to pair perfectly with their specialty: prime steak.

Pho from Pho Lien Hoa Oklahoma City actually has one of the largest per-capita Vietnamese populations in the country, and in Oklahoma City’s Asian District you’ll find a concentration of more than twenty family-owned Asian restaurants. The always hopping Pho Lien Hoa serves Pho, egg and spring rolls, Vermicelli, tea, Vietnamese coffee and boba smoothies. Pho, pronounced “fuh”, is a meticulously prepared, clarified bone broth served with rice noodles, meat, fresh basil, limes, bean sprouts and jalapeno. You build your own and largely control the flavor and spice. Don’t get carried away with the sriracha or other condiments - taste the broth for its purity.

Onion Burger from Tucker’s The fried onion burger is an Oklahoma original, created by frugal chefs in the 1920s looking to make their beef stretch a little farther. Ground beef is pressed onto the griddle with very thin slices of onion and repeatedly pressed throughout the process. There have been many interpretations of the true Oklahoma Onion Burger, but we think Tucker’s consistently nails it. They offer a variety of toppings, crispy fries and milkshakes to round out the experience.

BBQ from Bedlam Bar-B-Q Wet vs. Dry, Hickory vs. Oak, Pork vs. Beef dominate the barbecue debate from the Carolinas down to Texas. And while Oklahoma doesn’t have a signature style, OKC is home to some serious barbecue that benefits from a blending of regional influences. While their name hints at the rivalry between our two big Oklahoma college teams, there is no division over the fare at Bedlam. Fans of Bedlam love to hang out on the lovely patio with a huge outdoor fireplace and feast on their smoky BBQ and one of their many pies, cakes or bread pudding for dessert. Wash it all down with a local beer or their famous Malachi Tea. WWW.VISITOKC.COM

ARTS

Oklahoma City boasts a wide variety of world-class museums, from historical to fine art. And while the permanent collections at these venues are worth a visit year-round, here’s what’s new this spring and summer at some of the top museums in town.

Oklahoma City Museum of Art The Oklahoma City Museum of Art houses three floors of exhibits ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to French impressionism to contemporary art – a great mix of subjects. It also houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Dale Chihuly glass in the world, including a stunning 55-foot tower in the lobby.

"Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic" On display from June through September, this exhibition presents an overview of the artist's career including around 60 of his oil paintings, stained glass and sculpture. The exhibition highlights the range of Wiley's production, starting with examples of early paintings executed around the time of his 2001 residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem. These figurative canvases of African-American men, inspired by Wiley's observation of street life in Harlem, mark the beginning of his focused exploration of the male figure. The exhibition will also include a selection from his ongoing "World Stage" project, which he initiated in 2006 by establishing a satellite studio in Beijing. In addition, the exhibition will include portrait busts and stained glass "paintings," as well as female portraiture from Wiley's recent series "An Economy of Grace." WWW.VISITOKC.COM

“Coded_Couture” From June 29 to Aug. 10, this traveling exhibit, which debuted at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York and has been featured in Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily, will explore the relationship between fashion and technology. International designers Marloes ten Bhömer, Melissa Coleman, CuteCircuit and others merge textiles and interactive code into garments, drawings, sketchbooks, video projections and other interactive opportunities. Works engage biological, cultural, psychological and synergistic themes to create highly individualized fashion shaped by technology and the visitors input.

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

“Jeffrey Gibson: Speak to Me” Internationally known multimedia artist Jeffrey Gibson’s first Oklahoma solo exhibition will feature recent artworks that draw upon his Native American heritage (Choctaw and Cherokee) and intertribal aesthetics and traditions. Gibson’s art draws thoughtful attention to cultural and historical traditions while affirming their vitality and relevance to contemporary life. Gibson’s practice includes painting, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, video and performance, and the centerpiece of Speak to Me is a video, one becomes the other, that Gibson produced during a residency at the Denver Art Museum. This exhibit runs June 11.

America’s remembrance of the 168 people killed here is deepened by the sense of unity, compassion – even heroism – shown in response to the bombing. In touchscreens, galleries and theatres, a powerful story unfolds – one that’s as relevant today as ever. As is a mission to meet violence with vigilance.
