OULU
– your kind of city!
Oulu is Northern Finland’s largest city, with easygoing inhabitants and a vibrant cultural life. Oulu is so close to nature that you might even spot an elk in a park some evening. In addition to the green zones and urban atmosphere, you will enjoy its Arctic magic: the Northern Lights in the winter and a summertime sun that never sets. ATTRACTIONS Classic sights that are bound to stand out for first-timers in Oulu include The Bobby, a statue on Market Square, the impressive eighteenth-century Oulu Cathedral, and the lively Rotuaari pedestrian district in the town centre. Oulu also has many fascinating smaller buildings, such as the old granaries at Market Square and Tähtitorni Café. The Café was established in 1912 and continues to serve customers in its original location, an old observatory. Brand-new buildings have been built in the centre in recent years. They offer a

wide selection of shopping opportunities, for fashion, recreation and much else. Kivisydän, meaning Heart of Stone, is an underground car park with nearly 1,000 spaces. It makes the city centre conveniently accessible to shoppers and other visitors. Oulu also has more than 10 parks and green areas, providing a nice, calming contrast to urban life.
LIFE IN OULU You’ll soon notice that Oulu is highly popular among Finnish and foreign visitors alike. The locals are always happy to stop and give

A COMPACT AIRPORT WITH TOP-CLASS SERVICE AND SAFETY Oulu Airport is Finland’s second-busiest airport, with a steady stream of Finnish and international business and holiday travellers throughout the year. We asked passengers what they think of our recently refurbished airport.
1. Where are you coming from? Where are you headed? 2. Do you visit Oulu often? 3. What are your impressions of Oulu Airport?
STAN FROM THE UNITED STATES: 1. I just arrived from New Jersey. I’m here for business for a couple of days. 2. This is my first time in Oulu! 3. My first impression is that everything looks great. This seems to be every bit as international and well-functioning as airports in the US. Judging from the cabs and buses in front of the airport, the transport connections are excellent as well. I could use a little more English on the information boards, though. EERO FROM FINLAND: 1. I’m from Vantaa. I was here for business and am heading home. 2. I usually come through here a couple of times a year. So I’ve been here a lot over the years. 3. This is a very compact airport. Everything runs smoothly and there are no delays. That goes for car rentals and other services too. It is also more accessible than the smaller airports in Finland, which makes it ideal for transit.

CHRISTIAN FROM BELGIUM: 1. I’m here on business. 2. This is my first time in Oulu. 3. I like it! This is a clean, modern airport that looks quite like Helsinki Airport. As far as I know, Finnish airports have a very good reputation, and Oulu Airport fits that description. MITSUKO FROM JAPAN: 1. I’m here to visit a friend. Now I’m waiting for my flight back home. 2. This was my third visit to Oulu. This time I got to see the Northern Lights, which was amazing! 3. I love this airport. It is so peaceful and safe. It’s the complete opposite of the airport in my hometown! The staff is always so friendly and helpful here.

NALLIKARI Fun in the water and sun on the beach! Nallikari on Hietasaari island in Oulu is a popular destination, and it’s easy to see why. The beach runs for a kilometre by the beautifully blue sea, inviting holidaymakers for some fun in the water. We asked two mothers and their families how they had enjoyed their holiday at Nallikari.
“It’s usually quite difficult to find a destination for the whole family, but we definitely wanted to come back here after the first time,” say Jaana and Maarit.
Water fun, sandcastles and laughter from morning till night For Jaana and her family, it was love at first sight, even though they have to drive hundreds of kilometres from the south. “We drove past here a couple of years ago and noticed the sign to the beach. We stopped with the intention of having just a quick swim, but we were so impressed that we decided to stay for two days. The sea view behind the green park area is simply magnificent. So much so that we’ve come here for our holiday for three years in a row,” says Jaana. “This year, we were planning to visit other places as well. But we ended up staying here for more than two weeks, because
28
we enjoyed ourselves so much!” Bicycles are available for hire at the campsite, which makes it easy to visit the nearby areas and the centre of Oulu. Several restaurants and sites are nearby, such as the Nallikari Restaurant and the Vauhtipuisto amusement park. “One day, when the weather was a little cooler, we decided to visit Vauhtipuisto. We were surprised by the amount of rides and equipment, including a big bouncy castle, a supersize slide and a racing car track for kids. After our visit to Vauhtipuisto, we had lunch at the Nallikari Restaurant. They have wonderful meat and archipelago-style dishes, as well as children’s portions. The service there was excellent!”
Relaxing at a cottage Nallikari is an important place for Maarit and her family. “It’s easy to get away from
everyday routines here. My husband and I love watching the sunset from the Nallikari Lighthouse and enjoying some peace and quiet. Our children love to spend the day at the beach. They have plenty to do there: swimming, beach volleyball, a net for climbing, a miniature golf course and a huge playground, for example.” If it’s raining in Nallikari, you can enjoy water fun and the tropical atmosphere at Break Sokos Hotel Eden. Enjoy a massage or a pampering body treatment, and of course a whirlpool bath. For Maarit, Eden is a chance to enjoy some much-needed time alone. “A visit to Eden is a must for me each time we come to Nallikari. It’s important for me to recharge with a relaxing massage, followed by a steam sauna and a whirlpool bath. Our children really enjoy the waves in the large pool, and the treats at the poolside bar.”

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN
VisitOulu Magazine 2017
WINTER ADVENTURES IN THE OULU REGION You can spend an enjoyable, activity-filled winter day riding a husky sledge or having fun at the Nallikari Winter Village, among many other sites. A Winter Village by the frozen sea Every year, the Winter Village is set up in the impressive seaside setting at Nallikari. It has a range of activity sites built from snow and ice. You can try tube sledding, explore snow tunnels and enjoy a packed lunch by a campfire. “Children love tube sledding here so much that they usually refuse to stop until they’re absolutely exhausted,” says Kalle Komulainen, the business owner of the Winter Village. Visitors can also ride a reindeer sledge in the nearby area and an ATV on the frozen sea. According to Kalle, the sledge rides are great for families and offer a memorable Arctic experience. “The frozen sea is an incredible sight, especially for first-timers. One time, a family attended three consecutive sleigh
rides, as they just couldn’t get enough of the frozen, wide-open sea. A reindeer sleigh ride feels a little like travelling with Santa Claus!” The Nallikari Winter Village is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. between 18 February and 2 April 2017 and every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. between 6 and 12 March 2017. talvikyla.fi
Snow safaris with adorable huskies Nowhere in Finland is it more likely to snow than in Syöte. The husky sleigh rides in the area are particularly suitable for families with children. Huskies are friendly dogs that can’t get enough exercise and activity. “Huskies love spending time with people, and they also love
a workout,” says Janne Määttä, the business owner of Syöte Wilderness Services. On a winter safari, the huskies take visitors across the snow-heavy landscapes of Syöte. Here nature is on display in all its Nordic splendour: perfect silence, with pure, untouched snow. The experience is guaranteed to calm the minds of everybody, young and old. “The safaris take a fairly short and easy route, making them ideal for children. After the ride, visitors are treated to hot drinks and sweet buns. They can also get to know the dogs better. We often have husky puppies, which children absolutely adore.” syotteenerapalvelut.fi
