INTRODUCTION: DEAR FRIEND!

DEAR FRIEND! You are holding a magazine about Oulu, my hometown. I have been asked to write about my work and experiences as Oulu’s best-known police officer. I’m Bobby, and you will find me in the market square. Pleased to meet you!

I’m quite well aware of everything that goes on in the marketplace. It is busy even in the winter, but the high season usually begins on May Day, when Oulu residents gather together to celebrate spring. People are feeling good, which is always nice to see. Around Christmas, someone usually wraps a winter scarf around my neck. Throughout the year, I’m tempted by the delicious scents from the Market Hall. Let’s just say that I’m very huggable, even in terms of size! In addition to giving me a hug, local residents and visitors usually want one of those selfies with me. Last summer, I was visited by nearly 200,000 travellers from near and far, from the Nordic countries, Europe and all around the world. There are no language or other barriers around me. Oulu residents are jovial people – the best people in the world, in my opinion. I love my job so much that I seldom feel the need for a day off. If I took a day off, I would probably spend it on Nallikari beach. I would take the Potnapekka city train there. I think I would also enjoy a walk on the Hupisaari islands, a beautiful park area next

6

to the city centre. It would be a break from the busy atmosphere of the marketplace, which I also enjoy. In addition, I would like to try the Kaarle double-decker bus, which would take me on a tour of the city centre. I would learn about the most significant sights, as well as hotels, restaurants, shopping places and activities. As I love culture and education, I would also enjoy visiting the Luuppi Museum and Science Centre. You will find me in the middle of the city, but the entire Oulu region is definitely worth exploring. Syöte, the southernmost fell area in Finland, with its ski slopes and services, is located only a short distance from here. Other examples include the natural environments shaped by the Ice Age in Rokua, the beautiful beaches in Kalajoki and the Liminka area, which attracts birdwatchers from around the world. In the Kainuu region, Ukkohalla and Vuokatti offer activities and experiences in nature and are quickly and easily accessible from Oulu. Welcome to Oulu, the capital of the North! Come and give me a hug! - Bobby

INTRODUCTION: HOW MAY I HELP YOU? WORKING AT THE AIRPORT

Kyösti Määttä, Leena Ylitalo, Elina Kauppila

HOW MAY I HE LP YOU? WORKI NG AT THE AIRP ORT Oulu Airport is the second busiest airport in Finland after Helsinki. In recent years, extensive renovations have been carried out at Oulu Airport, both indoors and in the traffic areas.

Airport operations involve representatives of many professions who ensure that each passenger has a nice day and a nice trip. We asked professionals working at check-in, security check, the restaurant and the information desk about their typical day. 1. What does your work include? 2. How long have you been working at Oulu Airport? 3. How does your work help the passengers? 4. What kind of feedback do domestic and international passengers give regarding Oulu Airport?

14

KYÖSTI MÄÄTTÄ, AIRPRO DUTY OFFICER 1. I work as a supervisor at security check. 2. I recently completed my 12th year here. 3. My work primarily involves customer service. I answer questions about security guidelines, for example. 4. The security check methods have become more customerfriendly. One of the aspects we receive a great deal of positive feedback on is the swipe test for residues of explosives. It’s a quicker and easier way to check randomly selected passengers than manual checking.

LEENA YLITALO, AIRPORT SERVICE MANAGER 1. I’m one of five airport service managers. We are responsible for the operations at the terminal: the information desk, parking, check-in, the restaurant and security check. 2. I have worked here since 2009. 3. I help passengers navigate the airport. I answer their questions, both on-site and on the phone. People often want to know, for example, what type of ID is needed for their destination. International passengers also have questions about Oulu, about the price level and getting around in the city. 4. After the renovation, we have received a lot of positive feedback on how comfortable the gate area is, especially from international passengers. The rag rugs, rocking chairs and piano make for a pleasant atmosphere – such elements are not found at just any airport.

ELINA KAUPPILA, RESTAURANT MANAGER, SSP FINLAND 1. I work as restaurant manager at the airport restaurant. 2. I have worked here since the opening of the restaurant in 2011. 3. We serve fresh coffee and pastries to passengers, with a friendly smile that makes even the busiest travellers feel better. 4. According to the feedback we receive from passengers, Oulu Airport is easy to navigate, even though we are the second largest airport in the country. Everything works here, and the gates are near.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN: THE BEST DAY OF THE SUMMER!

24

THE BEST DAY OF THE SUMMER! Time flies when you are enjoying a day out with your children in the seaside scenery of Oulu. There is plenty to do – but can the parents keep up? We followed a family for a day in Nallikari. Vili, 7, had come to Oulu with his parents, Kati and Mikko.

9 A.M. BREAKFAST AT BREAK SOKOS HOTEL EDEN IN OULU An abundant breakfast buffet is a nice way to start the day. Guests enjoy breakfast with a view in the spacious restaurant. Vili checks out the wide selection of foods and takes his pick. Fruit and freshly baked Karelian pasties are popular choices this morning. The view from the restaurant is absolutely beautiful, and Kati and Mikko are taking it in. Vili, however, has something else in mind: he has spotted a chocolate fountain. “How does this work?” Vili soon learns how to dip a marshmallow in the chocolate. Sweet! 10 A.M. BICYCLES AND A PEDAL CAR FROM THE NALLIKARI EQUIPMENT RENTAL SHOP After breakfast, the family decides to explore the Nallikari and Hietasaari areas. They visit the equipment rental shop at the Nallikari Holiday Village, with a bicycle trip

in mind. Vili’s eyes light up once he realises that the shop rents out pedal cars, in addition to colourful Jopo bicycles. He has no trouble learning how to drive the little car: “Daddy, look!” His parents need to pick up their pace to keep up with the young driver. Vili enjoys the speed, and there is no need for the parents to worry: the pedal car is safe and easy to use. Cycling is an excellent way to explore the beautiful Hietasaari area. The seaside boulevard is well kept, and there are plenty of bicycle routes. “We will definitely be coming back here,” Kati says. “This is the best!” says Vili. 12 NOON LUNCH AT THE NALLIKARI RESTAURANT Vili smells something delicious while driving his pedal car. “Mummy, I’m hungry!” There is a nice restaurant nearby. Located next to the Nallikari lighthouse, the Nallikari Restaurant serves an archipelago-style buffet with light, summery foods and seafood. The selection of fish is impressive, as is the scenery. Vili gets to

choose from the children’s menu. “What a lovely place! And the food is delicious,” Kati and Mikko say. 1 P.M. VAUHTIPUISTO “Let’s go to Vauhtipuisto!” Vili is hurrying his parents along. He has visited the Vauhtipuisto amusement park in Hietasaari before and wants to experience it again. Cars seem to be his theme for the day, and Vauhtipuisto has exciting Lokari cars. They are equipped with a real engine. Children can drive them on their own or with a parent. Vauhtipuisto is easy to navigate with children. The area is conveniently compact, so parents can follow their children from one ride to another – or easily keep an eye on their children, who can try the rides on their own. Visitors of all ages enjoy the merry-go-rounds, and time seems to disappear in the bouncy castle. Parents appreciate the safe, compact environment that encourages children to enjoy the rides alone, under their parents’ watchful eye.

CITY OF OULU: SAARA AALTO – WINTER PRINCESS FROM OULU

SA AR A A ALTO – WINTER PRINC ES S FROM OULU Singer-songwriter Saara Aalto hails from the Oulu region. She came second in X Factor UK in 2016 and has mostly performed abroad in recent years. However, Saara visits her home region as often as possible. “Today, Oulu is something very positive and nostalgic to me. When I lived in Finland, I did not fully realise how special a place it is. When I have told people abroad about my background, I have understood that I come from a very beautiful, exotic city,” says Saara

Saara used to tell her foreign friends that she came from Finland, without mentioning her home town. In recent years, however, her home town has become particularly significant and dear to her. “I proudly tell people that I grew up in the north, in a city where it gets dark and sometimes really chilly in the winter. People look at me with disbelief when I tell them that I would ride my bicycle to school around the year, even when the temperature dropped to -30 °C in the winter.” Saara also likes to tell people about the success that her home town enjoys as the Nordic technology capital. Oulu and its people create success stories under circumstances that may seem exotic to outsiders.

32

STILL SPEAKING OULU When Saara visits Oulu, she loves to spend time with her parents and grandparents. “I remember how much I enjoyed visiting Ainola Park and the Tietomaa science centre as a child with my grandparents.” Nowadays, if she has time, she goes to Torinranta to enjoy the marketplace atmosphere and nearness of the sea. You can still hear the Oulu dialect in Saara’s speech, especially when she talks with other Oulu people. “People from Oulu are easy-going, open and down-to-earth – this is what I’ve been told when my dialect has given my home town away,” says Saara. She agrees to this description and says that the people play a major role in making Oulu what it is: proudly unique.

CITY OF OULU: THE CAPITAL OF AIR GUITAR

THE CAPITAL OF AIR G UITAR In addition to the 24-hour daylight, a sure sign of summer in Oulu is the Air Guitar World Championship. The event brings people from all over the world to the town. The annual “summer camp” for airheads worldwide will take place once again in 2018.

We asked Air Guitar World Championship (AGWC) winner of 2012, Justin “Nordic Thunder” Howard, to interview some of the participants of 2017. Justin is himself a huge fan of Oulu, and is a regular visitor. He even ran for Mayor of Oulu in 2016! Here’s what the international class of ’17, including winner Matt “Airistotle” Burns, had to say about Oulu, the Capital of Air Guitar! 1. Who are you, and where are you from? 2. Is this your first time in Oulu/How many times have you been to Oulu? 3. What is Oulu like? 4. Where do you go when in Oulu/Have you had the chance to check out any specific places in Oulu? 5. What are the people in Oulu like?

40

MARC “AIRBREAKER” DUMONT 1. Airhead of a family with two kids living in Langenfeld, Germany. 2. This was my first time in Oulu. I am quite sure it will not be the last. 3. Take Oulu Airport for instance: One of the most relaxing places I have ever been. A grand piano waiting to be played by guys like me. When we arrived in noisy Berlin I thought to myself: Let’s take the next flight back to Oulu. 4. My favorite was the rock bar 45 Special. Still have neck pain from head banging. 5. I was amazed about the frankness of the people. Their placidity is admirable. PATRICK “EHRWOLF” CULEK 1. Munich, Germany born and raised son of Syrian/Slovenian immigrants. 2. This was my second time in Oulu. I’ve been here in 2015, but only for three days, which was way too short. 3. It reminds me a bit of my hometown, where you can enjoy the advantages of a modern, yet clean city, with its diverse cultural offerings, yet still are close enough to nature, if you need to escape for a day or two. 4. I like the Kauppatori market place near the ocean, and the Valve cultural center in Hallituskatu, with their different offers throughout the year. At night time I would recommend one of the many Karaoke Bars and the 45 Special for sure. 5. The people of Oulu are very honest in

my experience. You won't get a fake smile here. When you are true to yourself, they might open their hearts and can become true friends. SHOTA “SHOW-SHOW” MONDEN 1. I am from Sendai city, Japan. I study architecture in high school. 2. It’s first time for me to come to Oulu, and my first trip abroad. 3. It’s wonderful city, because the nature is rich and it’s a peaceful town. Meanwhile, Oulu has a modern aspect. Especially, my favorite in Oulu was the public “gymnastic park” near the air guitar stage. I went there every day. 4. Just before coming to Oulu, I saw a Japanese TV program introducing Oulu, and I already checked the location of the Toripolliisi statue. Us Japanese call Toripolliisi “Uncle Oulu!” 5. When the big disaster hit my hometown, Sendai in 11 March 2011, the citizens of Oulu gave us a lot of donations and warm support. Everyone I met in Oulu on this trip was friendly and I was touched by their kindness. Kiitos! NICOLE SEVCIK AKA “MOM JEANS JEANIE” 1. I'm a 34-year-old mother and wife from the United States. I live with my family near Atlanta. 2. This was my second visit to Oulu (making that 2 consecutive years).

Nicole Sevcik, aka “Mom Jeans Jeanie”

3. Oulu is neat little city, blending history with a modern lifestyle. It's noticeably cleaner than many cities and easy to navigate by foot. 4. The places that stand out the most to me are the Kesän Sauna (floating sauna) and the international market. Venturing outside the city for a walk or berry picking is a special treat to those of us foreign to the region. 5. The people in Oulu love their families and their black rock band hoodies! They're not afraid to kick back and relax, welcoming visitors to join in with song and drink. The city has a safe feel to it because of the people. MATT “AIRISTOTLE” BURNS 1. I am a 28-year-old waiter from Staten Island New York. 2. This was my 5th trip to Oulu, and it certainly won't be my last! 3. Oulu is a wonderful, small, quiet little town. It's very easy to walk around, and the locals absolutely love giving and getting high fives! 4. Like most small quiet towns, Oulu is an absolutely wonderful place to party! The 45 Special has repeatedly ranked amongst the best bars in the world, and the neighboring karaoke bars are a blast! 5. The people of Oulu are awesome! Always a good time with the people of the city, especially with local superhero Jaakko Jokipii and Oulu’s adopted son, my idol, Nordic Thunder!
