Culture Holiday in P채rnu

Sunny experiences from Pärnu! The rich history and the lively modern life of Pärnu offers experiences for all tastes. Classical music and theatre, clubbing and modern art, romantic cafés and adrenaline-releasing activities, it is all at your disposal, as well as handicraft workshops and art galleries. The historic city centre, the beautiful parks, the promenade and the resort area with its famous sand beach invite you for a walk. Four different thematic walking paths help you to discover the signs of medieval times, the history of fortress, the elegant seaside resort and the fast developing modern life of Pärnu. We recommend you also to take a look outside the city. Across the sea there lies the pearl of Pärnu County – Kihnu Island and its culture which is listed in UNESCO world heritage list. To the north of Pärnu there lies a romantic shore full of islets, wild sandy beaches and the rich culture life of Tõstamaa and Tõhela. There are also a peat railway and the prehistoric stronghold of Soontaga in the area. In south there are pine forests on dunes, endless beaches, ancient forests, bogs and the colourful culture of fishermen. Heading east you´ll find Tori Church and Tori Hell standing just side by side and also the fifth season – spring time floods in Soomaa. C.R Jakobsons Farm Museum at Kurgja and the bog hiking trails with its clean air are welcoming you. The unique song festival tradition of Estonia has partly its roots in Pärnu – Uulu parish song festival in 1867 is registered as one of the first song festivals in Estonia. It listed 7 choirs from Pärnu and nearby parishes. The repertoire consisted of religious songs. More than thousand people came to listen.

Pärnu architectural pearls and parks Pärnu architecture and street network is full of variety, showing the exciting history of the city through the different time periods. The four thematic walking paths show you around in the city focusing on its history, sights of interest, resort life and the modern city life. Ask for the information folders at Pärnu Tourist Information Points. A walk in the city centre tells the story of Pärnu as a Baroque fortress. It also introduces you to the old churches and houses. Pärnu churches and music are inseparable. The Elisabeth Church is famous for its organs. The Baroque city centre is connected to the river and the sea by the Vallikäär (Moat) which tells us about the history of the fortification. Near the only surviving rampart gates of 17th century in the Baltic countries, on the rampart, there are illuminated walking paths. The Vallikäär with its park and magnificent fountain is one of the jewels of Pärnu. Heading towards the sea you´ll walk past stylish villas and old wooden lace houses under the trees of the alleys. The walking tour of holiday-makers takes you along the streets, lined with cafés and alley trees, towards the sea introducing you to the Pärnu resort architecture. You´ll see the most romantic place in Pärnu – the old pier. Legend has it that the lovers who kiss each other at the far end of the pier will stay together forever. You will also be able to enjoy the walk in the Beach Park with its picnic places and children´s playgrounds or stroll down the promenade. One of the most stylish and almost fully preserved Art Nouveau buildings in Estonia – the spell bounding Ammende Villa – is also hiding here in the green shadows of Beach Park. Today it houses a hotel and a restaurant. You can also enjoy the exhibitions and chamber concerts here.

CAFÉS

Café Supelsaksad has a warm atmosphere thanks to its retro interior decoration, evening candle lights and tasty pastry. Café Mahedik in the city centre has organic food on the menu. There are several other great cafés and restaurants here – Jazz Café, Piccadilly Chocolate and Wine Store, sushi bar Ahoy. Some of the locals` favourites are Steffan´s Pizza Restaurant, Edelweiss and the Theatre Café.

The unique look of Pärnu is created by Olev Siinmaa who was Pärnu city architect in 1925- 1944. He has deigned new residential areas, restaurants, cafés, health resort centres and parks. He is also the author of the elegant Beach Hotel and the ”mushroom” Beach House, which is still the business card of Pärnu.

World culture is spending its holidays in Pärnu Pärnu is a cheerful city, which keeps inviting you back to fill you with the local energy. January is the month of modern art and Pärnu Contemporary Music Days. In february when the winter covers the river and the sea with ice and the time is ripe to brush the dust off your skates and skis, then once again, families from all over the world find themselves heading for Pärnu. Pärnu Ice Festival brings the busy tumult of summer back to the snow-covered resort and wraps the city into its colourful blanket for 9 days. In February we also celebrate the birthday of the Estonian Republic. In April there are folk music days and in May a ballroom dance tournament in Pärnu. June marks the beginning of summer concert parade – Pärnu International Opera Music festival and and all summer long Organ Festival. For popular music lovers we have the Water Festival on the program. July is the real treat with one festival following another. It never gets dark and people stay on the beach until the early hours of the morning. In July Pärnu celebrates its membership of the powerful Hanseatic League. Pärnu Hanseatic Days present old skills and medieval culture. The historic Vallikäär is the centre of activities and the medieval fair venue. In July you can also visit several traditional festivals: the Suveaaria series of opera performances, one of the Estonia´s oldest film festivals Pärnu Film Festival, line dance festival and choir festival. One of the most popular composers in Estonia, Raimond Valgre, is the theme for a number of concerts in July. For the classical music friends we have the Oistrakh Festival and the JärviFest under the leadership of two renowned conductors, Neeme and Paavo Järvi on the menu. JärviFest is the celebration of symphony orchestras and internationally recognized conductors. In summer ”Pärnu is dancing”. Reiu Rock is about to form into the music festival to be reckoned with. July is also the month for lace, porcelain and mouth harmonica. 8

For the joy of children and family The low and warm water of Pärnu Bay and the beautiful sand beach are especially attractive for the families with small children. To be on the beach is a pure pleasure. There are fountains and a playground for the little ones. The beach promenade is inviting you for a walk and for a ride in the mini-cars you can rent here. Surf clubs, rental bicycles and roller skates make sure you have a good time while here. Pärnu, the city of sea and the river, is the place to explore the secrets of sailing. The training equipment simulates the actual sailing situations, so you don´t even have to go to the sea. Although the real thing in the company of a true sailor is of course an experience to remember. The picturesque cruises are taking you to small islands and to the Pärnu River. If the weather is cold, then there are plenty of indoors facilities, such as the water park of Tervise Paradiis, the biggest of its kind in Estonia. Pärnu Mini-zoo has a collection of bigger and smaller reptiles. Outside the city there is a sandy public beach, Valgerand, waiting to be discovered. The view from the 9 metre high watch tower on the beach is wonderful. Just as magnificent is the view from the tree tops of Valgeranna Adventure Park where the adrenaline rush is guaranteed.

THE GREEN RIVER LAND The Sun Circle trails of Green River Land are connected to the Pärnu River. One of the favourite events for young people in July is Reiu Rock (8.-9. July), open air event by Reiu River. There are still signs of prehistoric settlement at the place where the Pärnu and Reiu Rivers become one. The places worth visiting are Sindi, the former textile town, rich with parks and Tori, famous for its horse farms, Tori Hell and church. The heart of the Green River Land is Soomaa, where we miraculously have a fifth season – the season of floods. This is the home of log boats and the place where you can learn how to build a such. The boat building process is full of rituals, such as fire and water ceremony. The making of the log boat is a celebration where everybody is welcome. At the border of Pärnu County lies Kurgja, Carl Robert Jakobson Farm Museum, introducing the life and the work of a great mind of 19th century Estonia. The museum is an operating farm with cattle and agriculture. You can look at and try the old farm life and tools. The summer performances, calender holiday celebrations and freshly baked bred attract both locals and tourists.

THE LAND BY THE BLUE SEA The Sun Circle roads winding along the blue sea take us to Audru, Tõstamaa and, if you are interested - to Manilaid Islet and Kihnu Island. You can watch birds, enjoy a swim in summer and spend a winter holiday here. Tõstamaa islets, juniper fields, light houses and the road along the coast through old fishermen villages, are guaranteed to impress you. Kihnu, the island of unique folk traditions, has maintained the old way of living, folk costumes and legends. The modern Kihnu is a curious combination of present and past. Wedding traditions have not changed and the cemetery is just as holy as the church for Kihnu people. You keep your voice down in cemetery and you never go there after the sunset, because you don´t want to disturb the dead. Close to the main gates of the cemetery there is a grave of the famous captain Enn Uuetoa, also called Kihnu Jõnn. The memorial stone of Kihnu Jõnn is located in Rootsiküla, marking the birth place of this tough man. Kihnu Museum built in 1974, received a total make-over in 2009. In one part of the house the exhibition shows the art of Kihnu naive artists and the famous Kihnu men – Theodor Saar, the local historian, captain Enn Uuetoa alias Kihnu Jõnn, silver smith Peeter Rooslaid. The other part of the house introduces the everyday life of Kihnu: tools, clothes, handicraft, furniture. Kihnu lighthouse was built of parts made in England. The song and the dance traditions are kept alive by the folk group ”Kihnumua”. In December 2003 Unesco declared the Kihnu Cultural Space a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The Blue Sea Land trails take you to the heart of Terra Maritima, the ancient land by the sea, where the signs of strongholds and Livonia crusade battles are still there. Soonatagana stronghold has been a hiding place through the centuries accessible only by the secret road in the bog. Romantic Coastline is a trail which will introduce you to the beautiful landscapes along the coastline, to the culture-, nature- and historic sights. The visitors on the Romantic Coastline will be received with love and warm hearts. (www.rannatee.ee)

FROM THE BLUE SEA LAND INTO THE GREAT ANCIENT FORESTS The southern trails of the Blue Sea Land Sun Circle take you from Pärnu to the Latvian border along the sea coast. You will get to know the coast culture and fishermen villages, you will experience the wideness of sea and nature, sandy beaches, reed beds, piers, dune forests and meadows. This is an important area also from the culture point of view. One of the first song festivals of Estonia took place here. The first president of the Republic of Estonia, Konstatin Päts, was born here. On windy days the sandy Reiu beach is invaded by kite surfers. Southern beaches, Piirumi, Rannametsa and Kabli observation towers are popular among the bird watchers. Häädemeeste and Ikla are connected with each other by the picturesque old Pärnu-Riia road, which used to be the primary Tallinn - Riia postal road in the 18. century. The road runs through several romantic coast villages. Häädemeeste, Lepanina Hotel and Kabli bakery are the perfect places to stop for a meal. Small roads take you from the dune forests by the sea into the heart of the ancient forests with bogs and swamps. This is a real refuge if you seek peace and quiet. In the past this was the landscape of war roads and hiding places for freedom fighters. The real treasure of the area is nature – the flooded meadow forest, so rare in Estonia and its flora, the Rae Lake with its family friendly facilities and the 2771 ha of undisturbed bogs of Nigula Nature Reserve with its observation towers and hiking trails. The town of Kilingi-Nõmme which has formed itself through the history along the Pärnu-Valga road is memorable thanks to the wooden houses along its main street.

Heading towards Tihemetsa you´ll pass by the underground caves of Allikukivi ancient valley. The legend tells about the rich farm which sunk into the ground here after not giving alms to a beggar during the wedding festivities. Peebu raft sauna at the Rahu lake is surprising you with the floating sauna, a swim in Hell Barrel´s warm water and canoe trip to the Beaver House. If you are interested in ostriches, pay a visit to Palu farm close by. Saarde Katariina Lutheran Church was built in 1686. The church has been renovated and rebuilt several times. There are three birch trees growing by the road. The trees are the last remains of the one-kilometre-long alley, planted here in 1820. The alley marked the peasants emancipation from serfdom in 1819. The old road connecting Laadi to Pärnu offers a number of beautiful views.
