WINTER WINTER IS JUST AS EXCITING AS THE SUMMER
WINTER IN PENTICTON IS JUST AS MUCH FUN AS SUMMER. Imagine watching snowflakes gently falling as you warm yourself by the fire, or being out on the slopes under a brilliant blue sky enjoying fresh powder – before anyone else. The climate in Penticton makes enjoying the great outdoors easy and fun. When you visit Penticton you will realize that the weather experienced depends on the altitude. Like California, you can ski and golf here in the same day, without the hassle of crossing the border. An elevation change of 1,800 m ensures that the mild winter conditions in the valley bottom doesn’t affect the pristine skiing conditions at Apex Mountain Resort • Snowshoe in the moonlight to a roaring fire in the woods with dinner prepared for you and yours by a local chef • Lace up your skates and skate around the Apex Mountain Skating Loop • Rent a fat bike or a pair of snowshoes and ride or hike along the Kettle Valley Trail • Grab a tube and slide down the runs at Apex Mountain • Snowmobile or Snowbike in the backcountry nearby VISITPENTICTON.COM | 18

There are over 170 wineries operating and producing more than 75 grape varietals near Penticton within three distinctly different wine regions including the Naramata Bench, Okanagan Falls and Summerland. TASTE RESPONSIBLY
What is the BC Vinters Quality Alliance (VQA)? The VQA is a governing body that certifies that the wine you are tasting is 100% grown and made within one of British Columbia’s five recognized wine regions. VINEYARDS
While spending time at the tasting bar, you will hear all kinds of “wine speak” being thrown around, here are a few terms translated. Aroma: What you smell in the glass. Always give the wine a nice swirl in the glass this allows the wine to interact with the air and makes it easy to sniff out the notes on the tasting sheet. Bouquet: No, they are not offering you flowers- this term refers to the scent of the wine, which is often more than just a singular thing. Buttery: A term generally used when describing Chardonnay that has a buttery mouthfeel, or buttered popcorn character. Tannin: Tannins which are extracted from the grape skins and stems – this is what makes you pucker up sometimes. Terrior: This essentially means where the grape was grown. Veraison: Term for when the grapes change color from green to deep purple for red wines or golden and pink for white grapes. Wine drinkers get quite excited about this as it means that harvest and crush are approaching.

WINE TASTING ETIQUETTE
Impress your friends by following these four simple wine tasting etiquette steps to be a tasting- pro while visiting the local wineries. 1. Looks Matter! The color of wine matters and is an indicator of grape varietal and quality. Grab a white napkin and hold it to the glass to admire the color before you drink. 2. Let it breath! Aerate the wine by swirling it in your glass before you drink. 3. Take a whiff! Smell your wine after you aerate it. 4. Taste! Note: Spittoons are a common sight in most wineries and it is polite to use one while tasting multiple wines to avoid drinking too much.
ICE WINE
The Okanagan Valley is ideal for the production of ice wine and at least five wineries near Penticton produce this intensely sweet dessert wine. Ice wine is the product of grapes naturally freezing on the vines in the winter months. Ask the tasting room manager for the best food pairing or call the winery to arrange a winter tasting. • Bench 1775 • Pentâge Winery • Moraine Estate • Red Rooster • See Ya Later Ranch
