From Penticton to the U.S. Border, there are over 170 wineries, operating and producing more than 75 grape varietals. Near Penticton, we have 3 distinctly different wine regions including Naramata, Okanagan Falls and Summerland. WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT? The wineries are busiest during the Summer and Fall months, as this is the peak travel season. This is also a fantastic time to visit the Okanagan Valley. As we approach Winter and Spring, a handful of the wineries remain open daily or by appointment. In these months, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a more personal tasting – you may even meet the proprietor or winemaker. WHEN ARE WINERIES OPEN? During late Fall, Winter and early Spring, it is important that you confirm hours of operation with each winery ahead of time. Some may have more limited tasting room hours or are available by appointment only. WHERE SHOULD I VISIT? With over 80 wineries within a 20 minute drive of Penticton, how do you know which winery is right for you? • Decide which region to visit: Naramata, Okanagan Falls, Summerland or beyond • Plan on visiting between 3 to 5 wineries on any given day • Take time to become familiar with the wines and enjoy your tasting • Allow travel time between wineries

1. Looks Matter - The colour of wine is an indicator of grape varietal and quality. Grab a white napkin and hold it to the glass to admire the colour before you have a drink. 2. Let it breath - Aerate the wine by swirling it in your glass before you drink. 3. Use your nose - Smell your wine after you aerate it as it will change the nose. 4. Taste - Be sure to enjoy the wine. Note: Spittoons are a common sight in most wineries and it is polite to use one while tasting multiple wines to avoid drinking too much. WINE TOURING TIPS Safety First – Ensure you have a designated driver or hire a tour company to drive you to the wineries. Call Ahead – Book tours and tastings at the wineries in advance, especially in the busier summer months. Storage – Ensure you have a cooler to store your wine as it could spoil in your vehicle in the heat. Dine – Stop at one of the many winery restaurants and enjoy a snack, appetizer or a full meal. Have Fun – Don’t forget to have fun while you are touring our beautiful wine region. COMMON VARIETALS Peachland/Summerland – Riesling, Gewurztraminer

VINEYARDS SOAK IN THE SCENERY OUT ON THE PATIO
Aroma: What you smell in the glass. By swirling the glass this allows the wine to interact with the air and makes it easy to sniff out the notes on the tasting sheet. Bouquet: No, they are not offering you flowers. This term refers to the scent of the wine, which is often more than just a singular thing. Buttery: A term generally used when describing Chardonnay that has a buttery mouthfeel, or buttered popcorn character. Tannins: Extracted from the grape skins and stems, tannins describe the bitter, drying sensation you feel in your mouth after tasting certain wines. Terrior: This essentially means where the grape was grown. Veraison: Term for when the grapes change colour from green to deep purple for red wines or golden and pink for white grapes. Wine drinkers get quite excited about this as it means that harvest and crush are approaching. ICEWINE

The Okanagan Valley is ideal for the production of icewine and at least 5 wineries near Penticton produce this "liquid gold" beverage. Icewine is the product of grapes naturally freezing on the vines in the winter months to between -10˚c and -12˚c. The grapes are then picked (usually by hand) and pressed while still frozen. Common food pairings such as cheese, spicy foods, salty foods, rich foods and desserts are all complimentary when enjoying a glass of icewine.
