Welcome The Royal Marines

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth This year’s Armed Forces Day is promising to be a spectacular event, with an exciting and packed programme for the whole family to enjoy and get involved with. As a city with such strong links to the military, we are very proud of our military history and our Armed Forces based in the city. I am particularly thrilled to be able to support this event, which as well as being fun, also carries a strong message. It’s an opportunity to say thank you and show our support to the Armed Forces, from those currently serving to reservists, veterans, cadets and their families. I would like to wish you all a spectacular and enjoyable day. Thank you for your support. Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Wendy Foster

Plymouth is a fantastic place to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Having spent much of my career in Plymouth based Commando units I understand the strength of the connection between the Armed forces and the city of Plymouth. Over the past year (as they have done for hundreds of years) service men and women have used Plymouth as a base to deploy across the globe on a wide variety of operations and deployments. In the end we always come back to Plymouth. It is the support you give to all our serving and retired personnel, their families and the cadets that defines Plymouth as a magnificent military city. The relationship between the local community and the Armed Forces has never been stronger. So if you get the chance today, please speak to the service men and women and share in their adventures, because you are a part of the story. I hope you enjoy the day and thank you for your support. Lieutenant Colonel Nik Cavill MBE Royal Marines Commanding Officer 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group Royal Marines

Community Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant Plymouth Armed Forces Community Covenant is our formal commitment of mutual support between the city’s civilian, Veterans and Armed Forces communities. It raises awareness of the issues affecting the Armed Forces and Veterans’ community and ensures that they are not disadvantaged in any way. Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant has accessed grant funding that is enabling us to lead the way in creating a Forces Friendly Quality Mark for local authorities, that includes the unique Veterans’ Care Navigation Pathway. We have a dedicated Service and Veterans’ Children’s Officer, supporting our schools and settings and our Corporate Covenant runs an annual jobs fair for Ex-Service personnel and their families.

6

We are the only Covenant with a Military Kids Choir provided through our Covenant pledges within our action plan. Plymouth Military Kids Club Heroes is the biggest cluster in the country with over 60 member schools.

Badge Competition To support the Royal British Legion, schools across Plymouth compete to create a badge design which represents the spirit of Armed Forces Day. The badge raises funds for the Poppy Appeal and raised £2,500 in 2016. This year’s winner was Sophia Broome, age 6, from Yealmpstone Farm Primary School. We love the military figures on the badge. The badges will be on sale throughout the day from the Military Kids Club Heroes tent, with all profit from the badges going to the Royal British Legion.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION The Royal British Legion support serving members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans and their families. Our support starts after 7 days of service and continues long after life in the Armed Forces. We help veterans young and old transition into civilian life, helping with employment, financial issues, respite and recovery, through to lifelong care and independent living. From rehabilitation courses, to tailored personal support for recovery, homelessness and financial advice – we’re by veteran’s sides, every step of the way. Every year we even take thousands of families on breaks, so they can spend some much needed quality time together. We give veterans a voice by championing their interests and campaigning on key issues. We often call on members of the public to add their voice to help us make a real impact. The Legion is also the national custodian of Remembrance, safeguarding the memory of those who have fought and died in conflicts past and present, as well as the unique contribution made by all those who’ve served. Every year our Poppy Appeal raises vital funds to support our work. WRNS100 This year the Naval Service celebrates the centenary of the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and its influence on opportunities for women in today’s Royal Navy. In 1917, the Admiralty decided to ‘free a man for the Fleet’ by forming the WRNS – its members soon became known as ‘Wrens’. By the end of WWI over 7,000 had served in a variety of roles: some in traditional domestic and clerical jobs, others in more unusual jobs such as driving and cypher tasks. Strong bonds were formed which led to the formation of the Association of Wrens (AOW) – an organisation that still exists today. Many more Wrens served during WWII and by 1944 the Service reached its peak of nearly 75,000. Officially women did not serve at sea, but many did find themselves afloat, such as Boat Crew Wrens who transported personnel and mail to and from ships in Plymouth Sound. Others embarked in troopships for foreign postings, and some sadly never arrived. Post WWII the WRNS continued in their supporting role enjoying foreign postings in places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Malta and Gibraltar. Subsequently NATO postings took Wrens to Italy, Portugal and America. Gradually the separate service of the WRNS integrated into the Royal Navy. Initial naval training for women moved to HMS Raleigh, Torpoint, and Wrens soon came under the same Naval Discipline Act.

24

Initial training for men and women was combined, while in 1990 women were given the chance to volunteer for sea service to become officially part of a ship’s company. Later, sea service became compulsory for all. The distinctive uniform and blue badges worn by Wrens were replaced with gold badges, as worn by the men. In November 1993 the WRNS was disbanded and all women transferred into the Royal Navy. Since that day of integration, naval woman have gone from strength to strength. Today’s women of the Royal Navy serve alongside their male colleagues at sea, in the air, under the sea and on land. Woman now have command of air squadrons and ships, ranging from small patrol craft to destroyers. More recently, in September 2016, the Royal Navy’s initial training establishment, HMS Raleigh, welcomed its first female Commanding Officer. One hundred years on, the Naval Service celebrates equality for women.
