Local produce Plymouth is fortunate to be surrounded by the sea with a fish port and market where local fisherman deliver delicious fresh seafood daily. You will find many of our restaurants source local produce and shop locally with Sutton Harbour Fisheries and the Plymouth Fish Market supplying the majority with fresh seafood. It also benefits our local economy as every £1 spent with a local business generates £3, through the additional money spent on local goods and services. 4
Sustainable Sourcing: ‘Food Plymouth’ is a city-wide partnership working to create a sustainable food city. We are a founder member of the UK Sustainable Food Cities network and are currently working to achieve the first ever UK Sustainable Food City accreditation, in recognition of the work taking place across the city which is helping to make Plymouth a more healthy and sustainable city.

Annual Food Events Flavour Fest: Plymouth is home to the South West’s largest free food festival held in the middle of August every year. With over 120 regional food producers and top chef demos, it is not to be missed. Plymouth Seafood Festival: Every September the harbour comes alive with an exciting quayside celebration of the city’s fantastic locally caught seafood in this annual event.
5
Plymouth City Market The bustling and popular Plymouth City Market is in the heart of the City Centre’s independent shopping quarter. As well as the market you will find a selection of shops and eateries along New George Street and Cornwall Street.
6
There’s been a market in Plymouth since the 14th century and although today’s 100-business market is packed full with a variety of retailers, with everything you could imagine from household goods to handbags, the array of food provision is a real boost for westcountry shoppers.
Plymouth Food Guide 2015
Local people still love the opportunity to browse the variety of foods on offer and the Market is still the focal point of activity in this part of the city, with a 90% occupancy rate even in these changing times on the high street. The City Market provides food lovers with the finest West Country fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and deli products. There’s not much you won’t be able to find as they stock pretty much everything you could want, and at competitive prices. The fish traders will fillet as well as advise you on some tasty recipes to try out, while the freshest fruit and vegetables on offer will complement any of your dishes. Seek out the butchers for the finest meat the West Country has to offer.
There are a number of tea shops, diners and cafes making it a great place to stop to enjoy a freshly cooked full English Breakfast, traditional roast lunch or just a welcoming cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Reflecting the city’s growing reputation as a foodie destination, the City Market also features a number of popular African, Caribbean and Thai food outlets, with speciality products on sale as well as freshly made, authentic hot meals to savour, either eat in or to take away. So, why not seek out the delights of Plymouth City Market, just a few minutes walk into the Independent Quarter and explore the tempting selection of products we’ve got on offer.
The seafood and deli counters offer a massive selection of tasty treats from fresh crab to speciality cheeses and cured meats. They have plenty of savoury snacks to choose from, as well as freshly baked bread, cakes and of course Plymouth’s famous pasties. There are also a number of scrumptious sweet and chocolate stalls to entice you.
Other markets There are also two monthly local produce markets in and around Plymouth. • The Good Food Market at the beautiful Royal William Yard held every first Sunday in the month. With over 30 stalls showcasing some of the best local food and drink in the South West you’ll be spoilt for choice. • The Mount Edgcumbe Local Produce Market is held every second Sunday each month.

Celebrity chefs Dine in Plymouth and you can sample dishes from some of the UK’s top chefs, including TV chefs and Plymouth brothers Chris and James Tanner.
Plymouth Food Guide 2015
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Gary Rhodes and Mitch Tonks have also chosen the city for their restaurants.
Why Gary Rhodes Chose Plymouth… What a city Plymouth is becoming! For me, opening Rhodes @ The Dome was an absolute ‘no brainer’ as Plymouth continues to build on and expand its reputation as the ‘foodie capital’ of the South West. Coupled with some of the finest produce in the world, stunning views and wonderful local community I simply had to come to Plymouth. Having spent a lot of my time in the South West (it was whilst working down here I won my first Michelin Star) I felt it right to move back down to the Plymouth area, when I visited Plymouth Dome, a former museum, I fell in love with the place. A lot of people can brag about their city or their views but I really do feel we have one of the finest views in the world with stunning panoramic views across the Channel and Devon/Cornwall coastlines.
around the city. Indeed I fell so much in love with the city, it is now my sole UK restaurant – who needs the stress of London when you can have the sand of Devon?! We’ve worked really hard to fit into the city’s already amazing culinary scene offering something for everyone from homemade Devon Cream Teas to our British Tapas all the way up to stunning four course meals. One thing is certain in my mind – Plymouth’s time has come to shine, as the capital of tourism in the South West.
We’ve been here for nearly two years now and I’ve loved every moment of it, from meeting the local fisherman at Plymouth Fish Market to exploring the coastline and moors

Chris & James Tanner Barbican Kitchen It was a childhood dream of the Tanner Brothers to own their own establishments. The Barbican Kitchen offers local, seasonal and affordable food. Opened in 2006, Chris and James Tanner have established a vibrant, modern brasserie.
Housed in the 15th Century Gin Distillery, service is relaxed and informal, with the menu focusing on westcountry fish and meat. All dietary requirements can be catered for. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. They also have restaurants in London, New York and France.

The River Cottage Canteen and Deli opened its doors in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard in 2011.
Rockfish is a relaxed place to enjoy some great fish and shellfish, located close to the finest fish markets in the country, the morning’s catches of prime fish and shellfish are on your plate that very same day.
It has built on its initial success in Axminster, recreating its unique food offering in a stunning waterside ex-Naval heritage building. It features a triple-height ceiling and has a large outdoor terrace, affording spectacular views of the River Tamar, looking towards the Sound and across to Cornwall.
Their menu allows flexible dining, for those looking for just a plate of award winning fish and chips with the family or for those looking for a seafood feast!
