Community Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant Plymouth Armed Forces Community Covenant is our formal commitment of mutual support between the city’s civilian, Veterans and Armed Forces communities. It raises awareness of the issues affecting the Armed Forces and Veterans’ community and ensures that they are not disadvantaged in any way. The Covenant is championed by a co-operative, community steering group, seeking to meet its aims through a flexible and ever evolving plan of action. Plymouth is unique in that it has the first and only active Corporate Covenant of local businesses, working alongside the Community Covenant to develop good practice and maximise the impact of the wider Covenant agenda.

Did you know? Plymouth Covenant has accessed £300,000 of grant funding for the city over 3 years. Plymouth is one of the very few councils with a dedicated Service Children’s officer supporting all our schools. We are the only Covenant area with a Military Kids Choir provided through our Covenant pledges within our action plan. Plymouth HMS Heroes is the biggest cluster in the country with 54 member schools.
Badge Competition To support the Royal British Legion, schools across Plymouth compete to create a badge design which represents the spirit of Armed Forces Weekend. The 2016 competition has seen an astounding 350 entries overall. Last year HMS Heroes raised a whopping £2010 for their charity. This year's winner Dylan Ellis - aged 12 from All Saints Academy submitted his fantastic, creative design and won a cash prize! Please help us raise more for this cause; badges will be on sale at the HMS Heroes tent.

The Rifles
Freedom of the City The Rifles have been granted freedom of the city, allowing them to march in a parade through the city this Saturday afternoon. This ancient honour is granted to martial organisations allowing them to march into the city in a musical, colourful parade.
The old comrades will follow marching directly up onto the Hoe promenade via Hoe Road after the main parade has left the Citadel.
The marching contingent will be composed of two guards units, together with old comrades of the Light Infantry Association and the Devon and Dorset Regimental Association who will form up in the Royal Citadel. The parade will be led out of the Citadel by The Rifles Band and Bugles; the parade route will be as follows: Hoe Road leading onto Citadel Road, turning left up Elliot Street and onto the Hoe. The parade will proceed across the promenade. The parade will then return to the Citadel via Hoe Road.

Royal Marine Cadets Corps of Drums and Drill Display team The Royal Marines Volunteer Cadet Corps is a Naval Cadet Force (NCF) sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and has been associated with the Royal Marines since its formation on 14 February 1901. There are currently three ‘Divisions’, located at Portsmouth, Plymouth and Lympstone (near Exeter). The RMVCC exists alongside its sister Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps units at HMS Collingwood and HMS Sultan.

Pipe Band Formed in 1975 the band has gone from strength to strength, boasting over 30 members; a mix of Scots, English and Irish now perform to an array of spectators. The Band is privileged to have the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Alderman Ian Gordon and Commander Charles Crichton OBE as patrons. Their aim is to foster and enhance pipe band music for the enjoyment of its members and the general public, which it has done on everything from the television to aircraft carriers and frigates.

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth The Band of HM Royal Marines, Plymouth is based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, Cornwall – the premiere training establishment of the Royal Navy. Their primary role is to provide musical support to the Naval Service in establishments and to the general public at venues in the UK and abroad.

Veterans Village Why not come along to this year’s Veterans Village, sponsored by the Royal British Legion to support our former service men and women, and learn about Plymouth’s historic links with the military. More than 80 organisations and charities will be represented with people on hand to offer information, advice and support on a range of issues.
Joining the Veterans parade will be a mix of men and women, who have served our country all over the world, accompanied by cadets and more than 30 Royal British Legion Standards.
There will be exhibitions and individual stalls representing organisations ranging from the Armed Forces Bikers to the South Devon Parachute Regimental Association, as well as historic vehicle displays.
Other organisations and charities on the day include Help for Heroes, Forces Support, Devon and Dorsets Regiment, the Association of Wrens and Plymouth Homes for Veterans.

SSAFA Plymouth’s 130th Anniversary SSAFA is the oldest tri-service Charity, with the Plymouth branch being the oldest in SSAFA. Royal Navy Village The RN village is on hand to offer hours of entertainment with an exhibition of static displays, interactive tasks and exhilarating drill displays. Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams will educate you on the intricacies of the armored truck, medics will demonstrate how they save lives in the field and cadets will showcase their drum and drill techniques, so there’s sure to be something for the whole family to enjoy.
Southern Diving Unit Come and visit the unit of highly trained, incredibly skilled divers, watch in awe as they perform challenging underwater tasks in a full sized demonstration tank. If you think that’s impressive, wait until you see their bomb disposal robot demonstration! Submarine School Display This isn’t a normal school as you know it! Here officers and ratings specialising in Weapons Engineering and Warfare operations receive a variety of training to allow them to operate below the waves.
Come along and suss out what it would be like to live on a submarine with interactive training technology displays to get involved with. RN Devonport Heritage Centre The centre is one of Plymouth’s treasures, with records dating as far back as 1300 about the development of The Dockyard and Plymouth’s pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy through major conflicts, this display is a must see. If you’re intrigued and inspired by the pictorial interpretations and

Army Village A continued success at the annual Armed Forces event, the Army Village will excite and intrigue visitors this weekend with an array of activities, technical displays and career advice. Test your agility and stamina with an inflatable obstacle course, mechanical enthusiasts can learn the workings of engines on display and you can feast your eyes on the large wheeled tanker on site. 165 Port & Marine Regt with sub-unit 265 Port Sqn Royal Logistics Corps Based across the South West this Regiment is unique within the Army Reserves, as port operators in order to load and unload ships. These specialists will be on hand to explain the equipment needed for successful operations which will include, cranes, rafts and much more.
130 Field Company with sub-unit 105 Battalion Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers Come along and see their impressive Man Recovery Truck and speak to the engineers about their rewarding careers as reserves.

Defense, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Extraction (SERE) Training Organisation (DSTO) RAF St Mawgan is the centre of excellence for all SERE training; this is a fantastic opportunity to learn the ins and outs of survival equipment. DSTO will be on hand to explain the captivating displays. It’s a Tri-Service organisation formed by the colocation of the Royal Navy and RAF survival schools and the Resistance Training Wing.

Royal Marines & Emergency Services This area will stimulate the curiosity of the masses with an array of displays, from vintage fire engines, an air defence missile and a rib on behalf of the Coastguard. Both areas have something for little ones, The Royal Marines have a small children’s obstacle course and the Emergency Services have a cops and robbers photo board, the adults may enjoy this too!

Meet and interact with Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, Devon & Cornwall Police and the Coastguard. This area is popular with young and old alike, explore the display of vintage and modern fire engines, camera safety van and Coastguard equipment. The Fire Service will be on hand to supply home safety visit information.
30 Commando IX Group will have a number of displays for you to explore; motor fanatics won’t be disappointed with the various vehicles at the event including, a military Land Rover with mounted machine guns and an all-terrain vehicle. They will also have various weapon systems on show ranging from pistols to machine guns.

29 Commando Royal Artillery 2016 is a special year for 29 Cdo Regt RA; 300 years of the Royal Regiment of Artillery, 350 years of the Royal Citadel and 100 years since the batteries that now form today's Regiment first united on the Western Front as 35th Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

With the guns pre-positioned, the RSM will march the Regiment and the Band of HM Royal Marines on to the Hoe. The Commanding Officer, Second In Command and the Adjutant will already be on parade with the VIPs. The handover of the Regiment will precede the inspection by the VIPs. On completion of the inspection the order ‘Take Post’ will be given by the RSM, which will be the start of the Feu de Joie. Once ‘Cease Firing’ has been given the vehicles will enter the parade enabling the Guns to be hooked up, all vehicles will then drive past the dais, with BCs, BSMs and No1s saluting. The VIPs will then be escorted to the Officers’ Mess by the 2IC.
Royal Citadel – Open Day 12.30pm to 4.30pm 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery will be hosting an open day at the Royal Citadel as part of the Plymouth Armed Forces Weekend celebrations. Fairground rides, animal shows, stalls, live entertainment, food and drink and Regiment displays will make the day. Entrance is free with a small charge for rides.

Feu de Joie To mark these three anniversaries and to celebrate the Regiment's special relationship with the city and people of Plymouth, 29 Cdo Regt RA will fire a Feu de Joie with 6 x 105mm Light Guns as part of Plymouth's Armed Forces' weekend. This will be a central component to the displays taking place on the Hoe, with the Red Devils Parachute Display Team dropping in after 1300hrs. 29 Cdo Regt RA will show the people of Plymouth the often unseen side of Commando Gunners by conducted a ‘Feu de Joie’ with class, precision and accuracy, highlighting their professionalism and Commando ethos.

Devonport Field Gun Association
This years Armed Forces Weekend sees the first ever Junior Field Gun Tournament take place. The Devonport Field Gun Association created the group with the aim to develop and nurture teamwork, fitness, physical and emotional resilience and mental agility. Alongside this they bring young people, school staff and parents together to help raise self-esteem and confidence. It is expected that twelve crews from nine primary schools will take part in the Tournament, battling it out to win one of the four trophies up for grabs. The crews will have a chance to get warmed up before going head to head to run three times in competition against other crews in the Plymouth Hoe Arena. Visit the Association’s exhibition gazebo where restbite from the healthy tension of the Tournament will be provided. To get a teaser of what is to come, be sure to catch the demonstration runs by Pennycross Primary School and Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps – Junior Field Gun crews on Saturday 25 on the Hoe. The Tournament will be taking place on the Sunday of Armed Forces Weekend – 0900 to 11am and 1.45pm to 3.05pm.

Air Displays Sunday 1pm – 4pm Red Devils Parachute Display Team Back for another year, the fearless and exhilarating Red Devils are here to thrill and amaze onlookers. Made up of jumpers from The Parachute Regiment and the British Army, the highly skilled team can jump almost anywhere completing around 60 displays each year.

BBMF RAF Dakota The Dakota, manufactured in the USA in 1942 was initially issued to the United States Army Air Force. This diverse aircraft has been used for a number of tasks including dropping Paratroops. This Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will grace the skies this weekend.
Blades Display Team Catch the World renowned, record holding, civilian aerobic display team take over the sky. Made up entirely of former RAF Red Arrows pilots, the team led by Andy Offer OBE (ex-leader of the Red Arrows) will mesmerize the crowd with their dynamic and adventurous manoeuvers.
TRIG Aerobatics Team If you’re looking for vintage glamour and awe striking formations this team is here to delight. The Pitts bi-planes were designed in the 1940’s and continue to impress crowds throughout Europe with their agility and unbeatable character.

Having been fully trained, John was called up in 2012 to deploy to Cyprus as part of Operation TOSCA.
John Amos-Yeo John Amos-Yeo is an Army Reservist with 165 Port and Maritime Regiment in Plymouth. 165 Port and Maritime is a regiment of trained Port Operators who take responsibility for unloading and delivering stores and equipment from Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) support ships to British Forces operating overseas. Before becoming a Reservist, John worked split shifts as a barman at a pub in the village of Kilkhampton, near Bude. The job offered him some spare time during the day. He also held an HGV license. Wanting to make the most of the time and his driving skills, John signed-up as a Reservist with 155 Transport Regiment, which later re-rolled to become 165 Port and Maritime Regiment.
“Becoming a Reservist is the best thing I have ever done” said John. “I served alongside Regulars in Cyprus as part of the UN Peace Keeping Mission and I’m now working on a permanent basis for the Regiment as a Reservist Recruiter; attending events and shows countrywide. I certainly don’t have much spare time now, but I enjoy it and there is never a dull moment.” John and his fellow Reservist Recruiters will be in The Village area along The Hoe at Armed Forces Weekend.

Reservist
Andy Netherton Andy Netherton is a Combat Medical Technician (CMT) Reservist with Army Reserve Battalion, 6 RIFLES. The Reservist Infantry Soldiers of 6 RIFLES are trained for front line operations and for the same demanding roles as full time soldiers. Routine security patrols, training National Security Forces, intelligence gathering, assisting with the provision of logistics supplies for the battle group, and close combat with the enemy were all in a day’s work for 6 RIFLES Reservists deployed in Afghanistan alongside Regulars between 2007 to the end of combat operations in 2014. Andy first became a Reservist in 1991, spending his first four and a half years with a field hospital unit based in London. Missing the great outdoors, which is Andy’s passion, he came back to Plymouth and joined The Dartmoor Rescue Group. He returned to the Reserves in 2006, signing-up with 6 RIFLES.

Andy said “As part of an infantry battalion I spend a lot of time outdoors completing my soldier training and I’m regularly using my medical skills as well. It’s an ideal role for me.” In 2008, Andy was mobilised to Afghanistan for 6 months as part of Operation Herrick 9, the codename under which all British operations in the War in Afghanistan were conducted. “We had 3 months pre-deployment training and on our return to the UK, we received a further 3 months of post-deployment exercises. But it’s certainly not all work and no play! Some of the training can be overseas. I’ve been to America, Cyprus and Germany. Skiing in the Alps, sailing in the Caribbean and playing football in the USA are examples of the adventure training activities available to us” said Andy. Andy’s advice to anyone wondering about being a Reservist is not to automatically assume it is not for you. There are lots of different roles available. You can put in as much or little time as you want, make new friends, visit new places and enjoy new experiences… speak to the Reservist Recruiters at Armed Forces Weekend! Cadet Opportunities in Plymouth The four Cadet Forces based in Plymouth provide a wide array of activities ranging from military skills training, Target Rifle Shooting, Flying and Gliding, Sailing and other water bound activities to Music, First Aid, Duke of Edinburg’s Award Scheme, Ten Tors and other outward bound activities. All contributing towards BTEC awards within their respective service syllabus training. They make lifelong friendships, gain valuable leadership and personnel development skills and training, equipping them for further and higher education or going into the workplace.
In order to be able to offer these opportunities to the young people of Plymouth, we need volunteer staff to come and join the cadet services. You don’t have to have had prior Military experience, we will train you. There are many opportunities available to you

With its historic roots as a School of Navigation founded in 1862, Plymouth University’s world-renowned expertise in marine and maritime has ensured that it is a natural fit for the Armed Forces in supporting some of its academic training and development programmes. The most significant collaboration has been the 25-year relationship with the Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) at Dartmouth, formalised by an historic accord for the accreditation and delivery of the academic aspects of its officer training programmes. University staff, based at BRNC, run full and foundation degrees covering meteorology, oceanography, sensors and telecommunications, ship technology, strategic studies, and English. BRNC is also helping the University to deliver a new masters degree in strategy and maritime security, in partnership with the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre. Through CENORE – the Centre of Excellence in Oceanographic Research and Education – the University has established a joint venture with BRNC and Flag Officer Sea Training’s Hydrographic and Meteorological (FOSTHM) Training Group to
help Royal Navy personnel adapt advanced academic degrees, and assist with the identification of mutual research and enterprise activities. The University also accredits degrees and foundation degrees with HMS Drake and HMS Collingwood, and accredits the BMus (Hons) Degree at the Royal Marines School of Music (RMSoM), based at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth. The University is also an approved provider of courses for the Ministry of Defence’s Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELCAS) and enrols many students through this process, directly helping service leavers make the transition to new careers and opportunities. Academics have also supported a number of Armed Forces programmes focused upon health and wellbeing, such as researching the experience of military families (in partnership with the Plymouth Armed Forces Community Covenant) and examining a range of issues in relation to veterans.
A pioneering collaboration between Plymouth University and Help for Heroes Plymouth Recovery Centre aims to bring additional therapeutic benefit and value to H4H beneficiaries (wounded, injured and sick serving and veteran personnel, their families and dependents) through educational and research engagement. A former Army Air Corps trooper and H4H ambassador is part of the University’s Project Nevada team hoping to achieve the world handcycling speed record in September 2016.
