Plymouth: Ocean City Festival 2016

Events IMECHE Cardboard Boat Race

Smeaton’s Tower

PDSSA Boathouse, Commercial Wharf, PL1 2NX 11 September. 10am to 5pm

Smeaton’s Tower, Hoe Road, PL1 2NZ 11 to 25 September. 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Sunday

Put your skills to the test in our engineering challenge: Build a boat out of nothing but a few bits of cardboard and some sticky tape, then sail it around a course in Plymouth harbour! This year we have a NEW ‘pre-built category’ for more details about the pre-built event please follow the link below.

A centrepiece on Plymouth’s Hoe, Smeaton’s Tower is one of the South West’s most wellknown landmarks. Originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759, it was taken down in the early 1880s. Now standing at 72 foot high it offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and beyond from its Lantern Room. Are you brave enough to climb the 93 steps to the top?

For the ‘build on the day’ event you and your team will have just half an hour to design your boat (with a little help from some professional Engineers and Naval Architects) and then two and a half hours to build it, before you attempt to sail from Commercial Slipway to the Mayflower Steps. Without sinking…!

Adult £3; Children £1.50 (under 5s free); Students/Seniors £2; Family £8.50. Other group concessions are available. For more information, please call 01752 304774. www.plymouth.gov.uk/ museumsmeatonstower
