About
Plymouth
Plymouth owes its existence to the ocean, with origins reaching as far back as the Bronze Age. From sea captain Sir Francis Drake setting off to circumnavigate the world, to the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620 and the city’s significant naval heritage, the waterfront location plays centre stage.
4
Walking through the city, history is proudly on display. The living memorial of Charles Cross Church, destroyed in the Blitz, and the wide boulevards of the urban centre show a thriving city that rebuilt itself after the Second World War. The Royal Citadel stands proudly on Plymouth Hoe, a dramatic 17th century fortress which was the most important English defence for 100 years. The ancient granite quays and Tudor brick of the Barbican and Sutton Harbour tell stories of centuries past, which you can almost feel in the soles of your feet as you stroll the cobbled streets. So wander the waterfront and breathe the salty tang of the sea air. Take some time to appreciate the view of Plymouth Sound, one of the world’s finest natural harbours. Watch the fishermen land their catch at the country’s second largest fish market. Hop aboard a boat trip or go for a dip in our open air saltwater swimming pool. They’re all part of what makes Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City…
“
The broad sweep of the water viewed best from Sutton Harbour and from the Hoe is something that never fails to draw me in; I love the heritage of Plymouth, the fish market in the seafood quarter, the shipping & naval connections and most of all the boats & the industry & life that shapes our daily lives. A wonderful city by the sea.” Mitch Tonks Chef, restaurateur and owner of award-winning Rockfish seafood restaurants
However long you have to enjoy a break in Plymouth, make sure you fit in some of the highlights! Soak up the incredible views on offer and enjoy a flavour of the rich and varied history of Britain’s Ocean City.

Plymouth Hoe is one of the most impressive city parks in the country, with its wide open aspect, beautiful views over Plymouth Sound and the distinctive red and white stripes of Smeaton’s Tower. Take a stroll along the promenade or sit back and enjoy the view that millions of people – from the Beatles to Sir Francis Drake - have enjoyed before you. Walk along the cobbled streets of the historic Barbican (home to the highest concentration of cobbled streets in England). Browse boutique shops and art galleries, pick up a souvenir to take home and soak up the historic atmosphere. On the Barbican, don’t miss the Mayflower Steps. This is where the Pilgrims set sail for America in 1620 – they eventually landed in ‘New Plymouth’ and over 20 million Americans are believed to be descended from these travellers.
“
I love photography in my spare time and Plymouth is full of interesting places. One of my favourite views is looking back across the city from Mount Batten pier. The vista is stunning and also gives a great perspective on all the maritime activity.” Gordon Sparks Breakfast Show presenter at BBC Radio Devon. 7
The Royal William Yard is a Grade 1 Listed former Naval Victualling Yard and an awe inspiring example of Georgian architecture – it’s worth a visit to appreciate the buildings alone, but take some time to enjoy the laid back café culture. Visit the home of one of Plymouth’s best-loved and most famous exports: Plymouth Gin. Brewed in the Black Friars Distillery on the Barbican since 1793, you can book a tour of the building and even make your own gin. Indulge in some retail therapy with top-brand names in Drake Circus and independent retailers and the 150 stall indoor Plymouth City Market in the West End. Unwind and relax at the luxurious Gaia Spa located in Boringdon Hall on the edge of Plymouth, which was named Best Destination Spa in the UK 2018 by the Condé Nast Johansen Awards.
