About Plymouth Plymouth owes its existence to the ocean, so that’s probably the best place to start in understanding and appreciating it. Follow Sir Francis Drake’s footsteps onto Plymouth Hoe, and gaze out over the magnificent Plymouth Sound – among the world’s finest natural harbours. Wander the waterfront and breathe the salty tang of the sea air – the scent of our city. Watch fishermen landing their glistening catch at the country’s second largest fish market – and even experience the excitement of hooking your own on one of our fishing boats, and the pleasure of preparing and eating it. Cruise around the warships and submarines berthed in Devonport, the biggest Naval base in Western Europe or dive into our shoreline saltwater swimming pool. They’re all part of what makes Plymouth our ‘Ocean City’. The city’s early prosperity was built on maritime trade and Naval defence. That legacy lives on in former tall ship docks transformed into first-class yacht marinas,

and the Georgian-era Royal William Yard, re-imagined as a nationally-acclaimed cultural and culinary centre. The heart of the city’s heritage lies in Sutton Harbour and the Barbican, where Plymouth’s history is written in stone; ancient granite quays and Tudor brick. You can even feel that heritage through the soles of your shoes as you stroll the narrow cobbled streets, now buzzing with boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, cafés and bars.

One of Plymouth’s principal attractions is that the great variety of a city comes packaged with the intimacy of a town. From there, just a ten-minute stroll forward through the centuries carries you to the wide boulevards and modern urban malls of the city centre, which was completely remodelled following the Blitz.

Family attractions Fair weather or‌.not quite so fair(!)‌ Plymouth is packed with family attractions, inside and out. The National Marine Aquarium in Sutton Harbour is the largest in the UK with the most shark and ray species in the UK - and rather less fearsome-looking clown fish and pufferfish - among the resident attractions.

Take to the water yourselves with a boat trip from the Barbican wharves across the beautiful Devon and Cornish coasts. If you are feeling active, the Plymouth Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre offers sessions for all abilities – and for a bigger thrill, try the 650 metre toboggan run. Perhaps drop into the Super Tramp indoor trampoline park – the South West’s premier trampoline park!

Or visit Dartmoor Zoo – just 15 minutes from the city – the inspiration for the best-selling book and subsequent Hollywood film, starring Matt Damon, ‘We Bought a Zoo’. Meet lions, wolves, otters, meerkat and deer or visit the Monkey Sanctuary in Looe, home to 36 individuals; each with their distinct character and personality.

Heritage attractions The Barbican alone boasts more than 200 listed buildings; turn any corner or explore any cobbled lane and you’ll be faced with a Tudor or Jacobean gem, such as the facades of Merchant’s House on St Andrews Street and Elizabethan House on New Street. Another of those jewels in the city’s crown – or perhaps the olive in its Martini – is the world-famous Plymouth Gin Distillery on Southside Street, a former Black Friar monastery dating back to the 1400s. Take a tour, see how it’s made – and taste the tipple.

The nearby Mayflower Steps commemorate the Pilgrim Fathers’ departure in 1620 for a new life in the New World; some 50 years later the imposing Royal Citadel fortress was established on The Hoe and was later joined by the city’s iconic landmark, Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, rebuilt here in 1882. Climb to the top and on a clear day you can still see the original base of

the building, standing on the notorious Eddystone Reef 14 miles offshore. Around the Sound, the Royal William Yard complex, constructed in the early 1800s, is the largest collection of Grade I Listed naval buildings in the UK and full of enticing restaurants showcasing the very best local cuisine.

Parks, gardens and idyllic green spaces If the Barbican is the bustling historic heart of the city, Plymouth Hoe is its natural extension. The green-lawned expanse commands breath-taking views of Plymouth Sound, Mount Batten, and the mile-long breakwater built by French prisoners of war in the 1840s. Here, reputedly, Sir Francis Drake refused to allow the inconvenience of the Spanish Armada’s arrival to disrupt his game of bowls. Today, it continues to host some of Plymouth’s biggest events.

The Hoe is just one of a chain of green spaces occupying more than a third of the city’s area; public parks including Freedom Fields, Millbay Park and Devil’s Point, and eight nature reserves. These are linked by a city nature trail (of which more later). On the city outskirts the 500-acre Saltram estate owned by the National Trust, set around a magnificent Georgian mansion and plantsman’s gardens, offers beautiful estuary and woodland walks overlooking the River Plym. Even the centre of the Barbican has an oasis of peace and tranquillity – for a few moments of unexpected calm, step into the delightful little Elizabethan Garden, tucked away in a quiet courtyard off New Street created within the ruins of tiny former cottages.

Shopping The shopping opportunities in Plymouth should quicken the pulse of even the most jaded consumer; with ‘something for everyone’. The city centre, with its mix of large department stores, high street staples and boutique shops, is a spacious pedestrianised precinct, easy to access and navigate. With free outdoor WiFi across the city centre, Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican, makes it even easier to get information, find out more about the city and to share experiences online. The West End offers a mix of small retailers, cafés and galleries, and the 150-stall indoor Plymouth City Market where goldsmiths rub shoulders with produce growers and specialist delis.
To the east is Drake Circus, with all you would hope for or expect from a modern undercover mall experience – easy parking, more than 60 shops including top brands and a food court to refuel. The Elizabethan streets of the Barbican, by contrast, offer a quirky treasure trove of artisan makers, arts and crafts, prints, paintings and sculpture. And the area is catnip for curio-hunters, rummaging through the back-alley antique shops. All in all, we think that ‘something for everyone’ claim is pretty well justified.

We love events We love to throw a party. We like to bring together as many people as possible to enjoy themselves. And we love a theme, be it musical, culinary, cinematic…or pyrotechnic. Plymouth is an event capital for the region. 2017 will also see a very special display on the Hoe - part of the iconic ceramic poppy installation first exhibited as part of the 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' art installation at the Tower of London in 2014 to commemorate the fallen in the Great War. The breathtaking wave will adorn the Grade I Listed Naval Memorial from 23 August to 19 November. Wave is a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks, created by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper. It’s something of a homecoming, as the Theatre Royal Plymouth made the framework for the original sculpture. 32

Sport and leisure Maybe it’s something to do with the ocean location, but Plymouth does produce some outstanding aquatics athletes: most notably, the swimmer Sharron Davies and the diver Tom Daley.
Meanwhile, for the adventurous, the Mount Batten Water Sports and Activities Centre offers courses in kayaking, coasteering, climbing, stand up paddleboarding, powerboating and dinghy sailing.
We can’t all reach those heights (or somersault from them), but there are many ways to simply enjoy being in, on or under the water here.
Offshore, divers flock to explore wrecks and reefs – as do anglers keen to get among the conger, pollack and bass they hold. The cruising waters of the Sound and the rivers Plym, Tamar and Yealm are, understandably, also a huge draw for sailors – particularly as Plymouth has such fine berthing facilities.

A breath of fresh air A range of city trails invite visitors to stretch their legs…or walk off the night before! Nearly nine scenic miles of the South West Coast Path wind across Plymouth from Admiral’s Hard in Stonehouse to Jennycliff in Plymstock. The Waterfront Walkway is studded with entertaining art inventively relating the city’s past. It is mainly on pavement and much is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs, so it’s a great family walk. Much shorter, the mile-long circular Sutton Harbour Heritage Trail offers an intriguing introduction to the area’s heritage; a similar (although longer, at four miles) trail links the historic and cultural points around Devonport.

Elsewhere, the two-mile City Centre Nature Trail unveils the flora and fauna flourishing in Plymouth’s green spaces and nature reserves. Offering a taste of the countryside beyond the city, the 10-mile but easy-going Plym Valley Trail follows the route of an old Great Western Railway track. It leads walkers and cyclists through glorious oak woodland, past dramatic industrial relics and out into the open landscape, giving great views from a series of viaducts.

CITY CENTRE There are 20 car parks in and around the city centre providing thousands of parking spaces for shoppers. As well as Drake Circus there are the Civic Centre, Colin Campbell Court, Derry’s Cross and the Theatre Royal car parks to name but a few. The car park at Western Approach (near Toys R Us) offers a day’s parking at £5.
PARK AND RIDE Stagecoach operate three park and ride sites in Plymouth; Coypool, The George and Milehouse. Services are every 10 to 12 minutes (can be up to 15 minutes at certain times) Monday to Saturday. Fares are from £1.90 return.
BARBICAN AND SUTTON HARBOUR Park up at the Harbour, Elphinstone or Lambhay Hill car parks for parking close to the waterfront. ROYAL WILLIAM YARD There is limited parking available within the yard.
