Delve into history and be enchanted, from 11th Century trade routes to Elizabethan merchants, Naval prowess to Art Deco decadence and Georgian elegance to 1950’s post war optimism. Take a walk along the cobbled streets of the Barbican and find yourself transported back in time, to history altering moments such as Sir Francis Drake’s victory over the Spanish Armada, the departure of the Mayflower carrying the Pilgrim Fathers in search of the New World, and explorers Scott of the Antarctic, Captain James Cook and Charles Darwin setting sail – all of which took place right here in Plymouth. Feel inspired as you learn about the pioneers and revolutionaries nurtured by Plymouth, including Nancy Astor, the first woman to take a seat in Parliament, and William Cookworthy, who discovered china clay and was the first Englishman to make porcelain.
Plymouth has a strong bond with the armed forces and its Naval history runs deep. There is no better example of that than the Royal William Yard, an impressive and imposing example of the city’s military prowess and the largest collection of listed Naval buildings in Europe. Its past as a victualling yard and store is reflected in its present use as home to some of the city’s best eateries, including the River Cottage Canteen and Deli. Lovers of architecture will revel in Plymouth’s buildings which span the ages, from the Elizabethan Barbican and Georgian Saltram House to the 1950’s post-war rebuilding of the city centre. A City of culture If you love theatre, you’ll love Plymouth’s Theatre Royal, the largest regional producing theatre in the UK. The sheltered waters of Plymouth Sound and the adjacent rivers and estuaries provide the perfect playground for adventurers, with a wide range of activities on offer.
You can also book chartered fishing trips, with the chance to cook the fantastic fresh seafood you catch for lunch. With so many sports and activities to try, Plymouth’s fun filled experiences will provide a city break by the sea to remember!
Whether you’re looking for high octane adrenaline sports such as wakeboarding or coasteering, or would prefer the slightly more relaxing pace of kayaking or stand up paddleboarding, Plymouth has something for everyone. There’s no better place than Plymouth for discovering your sea legs, with both racing and cruising waters just waiting to be discovered. Plymouth Sound has hosted a number of high profile sailing events and was the natural location for the hugely successful 2011 Americas Cup World Series, as well as the internationally renowned bi-annual Rolex FastNet. Boat owners can berth at one of Plymouth’s four marinas and venture further afield to the rivers Tamar and Yealm, or further down the Cornish coast with its picturesque fishing villages and coastal towns. Every year hundreds of thousands of people take to Plymouth’s green open spaces, surrounding waters and to the moors to explore and delight in our impressive natural environment. Our coastal walking ranks as some of the best in the UK, and with the South West Coast Path running right through the city, stunning views off the ruggedly beautiful Devonshire cliffs are just a short walk away. Head inland and you’ll discover the rolling hills of nearby Dartmoor National Park, where with 450 miles of public rights of way there is an abundance of walking routes to suit all tastes and abilities. Plymouth is also positioned perfectly for the pedalling visitor. We’re on the crossroads of National Cycle Network routes and on the edge of Dartmoor, with the Devon coast-to-coast route running right through Plymouth into the Plym Valley and beyond. You can even begin your cycle tour of France and Spain from here, thanks to our ferry routes to Roscoff and Santander. There are also some fantastic parks, gardens, and National Trust properties all within just a few miles of the city centre. Stepping ashore Once you have dropped anchor and found your land legs, there is so much to see and do in Plymouth and further afield - you will be spoilt for choice. Sutton Harbour Marina, Mayflower Marina, Queen Anne’s Battery and Plymouth Yacht Haven offer some of the best berthing facilities in the country and Plymouth boasts the second highest number of Gold Anchor marinas anywhere in the UK. Using it as a base, moor up in any one of the marinas highlighted and you are just minutes away from the Hoe, Citadel and city centre, all so close to the water’s edge. Plymouth has many boutique shops and big name brands and is well renowned for its vibrant history and culture.

Within minutes you can get to local attractions including the National Marine Aquarium, Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre, Drake Circus shopping centre, the Theatre Royal and Pavilions, or the galleries and restaurants of Royal William Yard. The historic Barbican is home to the Plymouth Gin Distillery and you can discover dozens of places to enjoy a bite to eat or drink with waterfront bars, restaurants and pubs in plentiful supply. Having exhausted all that the city has to offer, why not escape and explore the cruising waters around the Sound, and there are also the rivers Tamar and Yealm right on your doorstep.

A perfect location for a city break DAY 1 10.00AM: Make your first port of call the historic Sutton Harbour setting of the Barbican, watch the comings and goings of boats in the Sutton Harbour, wander the ancient cobbled streets – little changed from Elizabethan times – and browse the shops and galleries. Whilst you’re here visit the Elizabethan House and neighbouring Tudor Tea Rooms on New Street or Plymouth Mayflower Museum, in the Tourist Information Centre, which houses an exhibition on the city’s history with experienced staff on hand to provide further information.
11.00AM: From the visitor centre wander across the road to the Mayflower Steps where in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers embarked on the Mayflower voyage to the Americas. Take a picture and drink in the stunning setting of marinas and cobbled streets. From here, head across the footbridge and explore the underwater world of the National Marine Aquarium – the UK’s largest aquarium.
LUNCH: Wander back over the footbridge towards the Barbican and just past the Mayflower Steps you’ll find the Barbican Landing Stage where a short water taxi ride will take you across Plymouth Sound – with stunning views of the city from the sea – to Royal William Yard, a former victualling yard for the Royal Navy.
3.00PM: Exit the Plymouth Gin Distillery onto Southside Street and explore the fabulous shops, boutiques and galleries that line the cobbled streets. The antique shops on New Street are well worth a visit, with a mesmerising collection of curios, artefacts and collectables all for sale at the right price.
4.30PM: From the Barbican you are just 5 minutes walk away from the stunning Plymouth Hoe. The city’s waterfront park, the Hoe is the heart of the city and offers breathtaking panoramic views across Plymouth Sound over towards Mount Edgcumbe and the Cornish coast. The tended gardens of the Hoe are home to the iconic Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse and the Royal Citadel, home to the Royal Artillery – both open to the public – as well as the city’s war memorials and the famous green where Sir Francis Drake played bowls awaiting news of the Spanish Armada.
DINNER: Plymouth is a food lover’s delight – with celebrity chefs, cooking with fantastic locally sourced produce in restaurants in stunning locations. For fine dining try the award-winning Tanners restaurant run by celebrity chefs Chris and James Tanner, located in the Prysten House, one of the oldest buildings in the city – exquisite food in a wonderful atmospheric setting.
Open to the public for the last few years, Royal William Yard is now home to a fantastic range of Cafés, bars and restaurants. You’ll find Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli here – perfect for a spot of lunch (advance booking advisable).

Staying overnight? DAY 2 10.00AM: Start the day with some retail therapy - Plymouth is the regional capital for shopping with big name brands and high street favourites sitting alongside hundreds of independent shops and a vibrant City Market. The city centre’s wide tree-lined pedestrianised boulevards make for stress-free shopping and are a product of proud post-war re-development. Be sure to look up above the shop fronts and facades to see the designs in Portland stone that inspired TV’s Kevin McCloud to declare Plymouth’s post-war architecture ‘beautiful and heroic’.
LUNCH The city centre has a wide range of Cafés and coffee shops where you can stop for a light lunch. The Treasury Bar, just off Royal Parade, is two minutes walk away from the main shopping district and offers a chic venue for lunch. With fresh coffees and an impressive cocktail menu The Treasury also serves delightful afternoon tea in gorgeous vintage china.
Plymouth Boat Trips also offers guided fishing trips, with experts on hand and all the kit you need, you can even cook your catch for dinner at the Boathouse Café when you return!
DINNER If you haven’t been fishing and caught fish to cook on the quayside, you’ll want to head out to dinner. Sutton Harbour has a fantastic choice of wonderful restaurants serving cuisine from all around the world from Italy and Spain to Morocco and Asia.
7.00PM: Plymouth Pavilions, the Theatre Royal, Plymouth Arts Centre and the Barbican Theatre all provide a great range of theatre, dance, film and music performances for your evening entertainment.
10.00PM: When the sun goes down there’s still plenty to keep you entertained in our fair city. The bars on the Barbican really hot up later in the evening, with live music, stand-up comedy and dancing til the early hours - enjoy!
2.00PM: The City Museum and Art Gallery, just opposite Plymouth University on North Hill, is well worth a visit, showcasing a permanent collection documenting the city’s history as well as a programme of exhibitions spanning a wide range of themes. There’s also a great coffee shop for a midafternoon caffeine hit.
4.00PM No visit to Plymouth is complete without a trip out on the water – from the Sound you’ll see the city from a totally unique perspective. Wander down to the Barbican Landing Stage and find Plymouth Boat Trips – who offer a fantastic range of boat trips and tours. Travel up the River Tamar to view the wildlife of the estuary or the historic Naval dockyards – the largest in Western Europe, or why not take a trip over to the idyllic villages of Cawsand and Kingsand on the Rame Peninsula? You’ll disembark right onto a white sandy beach from where you can discover the historic fishing and smuggling villages offering magnificent walks and stunning scenery.

A centrepiece on Plymouth’s Hoe, Smeaton’s Tower is one of the South West’s most well known iconic landmarks The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 but was taken down in the early 1880s. The upper part of the lighthouse was brought ashore stone by stone and rebuilt on a new granite base. Now standing at 72 foot high, Smeaton’s Tower offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room. The remains of the original lighthouse still stand on the Eddystone reef and, on a clear day, the ‘stump’ and the current lighthouse can be seen on the horizon.

Mount Edgcumbe is unique and much loved. Built in the 1550’s the House and Earl’s Garden speak of a quieter world, one where the paintings of Reynolds, Stanhope Forbes, Van de Velde, Conde and Edema can be appreciated without hurry or fuss.
Close to Plymouth’s city centre this exciting museum has nine permanent galleries featuring thousands of objects from its world cultures, Ancient Egypt, archaeology, local history, natural history, fine and decorative art collections. From past to present, Plymouth Mayflower takes you on a unique journey through Plymouth’s world famous harbour and historic Barbican. The Mayflower Steps commemorate the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Plymouth, aboard the Mayflower, on 6th September 1620. The Pilgrim Fathers were Puritans looking for a new way of life, away from religious persecution, in the New World. There were 102 passengers on board the ship. They formed two distinct groups; the ‘Saints’ and the ‘Strangers’. The Saints were religious separatists or Puritans, the Strangers were migrants with an interest in the commercial opportunities of the new colony. The voyage across the Atlantic took 67 days. The Mayflower anchored near Cape Cod on 11th November 1620. Two days later the Pilgrims went ashore and began the search for a site to settle.The journey was hard and conditions on board were cramped. One young passenger died and a baby was born during the voyage, and another born before the Pilgrims final landfall at Plimoth, New England, in December 1620. Visit nearby Island House, one of the lodges where the Pilgrims stayed before departing, and view the names al all those who sailed on The Mayflower.

Travel through time from the early beginnings of Sutton Harbour, then a rocky natural harbour, through to the thriving tourist destination of today. See how Plymouth’s coastal location has shaped its history. From medieval times Sutton Harbour has witnessed many world famous historical events. Some of the greatest seafaring adventures have begun from the quayside, including Drake’s circumnavigation of the world aboard the Golden Hind and many of the expeditions to the New World. It has built on its initial success in Axminster, recreating its unique food offering in a stunning waterside ex-Naval heritage building. The former victualling depot of the Royal Navy, built between 1826 and 1835, is the second River Cottage outpost, serving modern-day Plymouth with locally and ethically-sourced supplies. The Grade I Listed Brewhouse building, part of the historical Royal William Yard scheme, is situated right on the waterfront facing Mount Edgcumbe. It features a triple-height ceiling, and has a large outdoor terrace, affording spectacular views of the River Tamar, looking towards the Sound and across to Cornwall. Getting to Plymouth Plymouth is easy to get to, whatever mode of transport you’re using. By Road: Head for the South West on the M5 from Bristol to Exeter, then the A38 Devon Expressway to Plymouth. Drive-time from both London and Birmingham is around three and a half hours.
Ferry: Access mainland Europe during your visit to Plymouth. Crossings to and from Roscoff in France and Santander in Northern Spain run out of Plymouth by Brittany Ferries.

Cawsand Ferry Connects the city of Plymouth to two wonderful villages on Cornwall’s Rame Peninsula. Departs from the Barbican Landing stage daily Easter to September.
