Mayflower 400 For more than a thousand years Plymouth’s spectacular waterfront has bustled with adventurers, emigrants, merchant traders, soldiers and sailors. The city has marked the departure point for many famous journeys, including the Mayflower in 1620. 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of this historically significant voyage, which saw the Mayflower Pilgrims sail to America seeking a new life and opportunities. This turned out to be one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the
shared history of Britain, the US, the Netherlands and the Wampanoag nation. More than 30 million people can trace their ancestry back to the passengers and crew on board. Plymouth was the Mayflower’s final departure point in the UK and there’s plenty to see and do to mark the anniversary. The Mayflower 400 commemorative programme will tell a holistic view of the Mayflower story with a cultural events and activity programme running into 2021 with representation and involvement from all four nations. See the Mayflower Steps monument, follow the Mayflower trail around the Barbican (search for ‘Plymouth Trails’ in your preferred app store) or learn more with a trip to the Mayflower Museum or The Box. City Centre Half Day Itinerary Take a tour of Plymouth’s city centre, where you will find big name brands, great independents and amazing post-war architecture in the heart of Plymouth.
Shopping Browse big name brands in Drake Circus where you’ll find the likes of M&S, Joules, White Stuff, and more. On either side of Drake Circus, you’ll find the pedestrianised city centre with high street stores alongside hundreds of great independents. Stroll down to Plymouth Market in the West End to find some amazing unique stalls and incredible artisan food and drink.
City Centre Trail Take a journey through Plymouth city centre to discover how the people of Plymouth rebuilt their city after the Second World War to deliver Abercrombie and Paton-Watson’s Plan for Plymouth. This unique post-war architecture was given planning protection in 2019 as the new city centre conservation area. This 1.9 mile trail takes around one hour. It is relatively flat, and suitable for wheelchairs.
The Minister Church of St. Andrew Although gutted by fire during World War II and refurbished in 1957, the 15th century fabric of St. Andrew’s still retains some of its pre-War features. The great bell tower (“Yogge’s Tower”) and many of its memorials survive intact, the bells having been cast in the 16th century to celebrate Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the Globe (including his landing in California on 17th June 1579). The Tower and Central East Windows both commemorate Lady Astor. A few of the fragmented 17th century inscriptions upon the floor stones surviving in the south-east transept name merchants and others who would have been present in Plymouth at the time of the sailing of “The Mayflower” in 1620.

Waterfront Half Day Itinerary
As Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth’s impressive waterfront is unmissable. With quaint historic spots, delicious food and drink and beautiful natural spaces to enjoy, there’s plenty to explore.
Barbican and Sutton Harbour Start your visit in Plymouth’s historic harbour, where you’ll find the highest concentration of cobbled streets in England, lined with cosy cafes and unique boutiques and art galleries, where you can pick up special souvenirs to remember your trip. See the Mayflower Steps monument which marks the Pilgrims departure in 1620 and visit the Mayflower Museum to learn more about their story.
Plymouth Hoe Walk along the waterfront to enjoy this breath-taking panorama overlooking the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound. Stroll along the promenade to see the war memorials and statues commemorating the city’s key historic figures, from Sir Francis Drake to Lady Nancy Astor. You can also climb the former lighthouse, Smeaton’s Tower, for a 360 degree view of the city and surrounding countryside.
Plymouth Gin Distillery Take a tour of the home of Plymouth Gin, the oldest working gin distillery in England. Steeped in history, it’s believed that the Mayflower Pilgrims stayed in the building before their voyage. Sample Plymouth’s most famous export in the Refectory Bar and pick up a unique gift to take home with you in the shop.
National Marine Aquarium Enjoy the largest public aquarium in the UK and home to over 4,000 animals. Come face to face with sharks, sting rays, jelly fish, Neptune the Octopus and Friday, the green turtle.

The Box
Pay a visit to Plymouth’s amazing new museum, gallery and archive. The Box has fantastic galleries and exhibitions including 14 impressively restored ship’s figureheads, beautiful paintings from the city’s art collections and a resident woolly mammoth. Until 18 12
September 2021, the ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition retells the story of this historically significant journey. From 6 November 2021 until 13 March 2022, experience ‘British Art Show 9’ – the UK’s biggest touring contemporary art exhibition.
Royal William Yard
Visit the Grade 1 listed Royal William Yard, former Royal Naval victualling buildings which now boasts a plethora of cafes, retailers, bars and restaurants. Take a stroll by the sea, climbing the staircase that links the Yard to the South West Coast Path.

Look out for the ‘Tax-free shopping’ sign in participating shops to claim a tax refund. When shopping, ask the retailer for a VAT 407 form. It’s important to note not all shops will participate in the scheme and some may have a minimum purchase price (often around £75). They may ask for proof you are eligible so bring a passport or national identity card. To get your money back, show the VAT form, the goods and your receipts to customs at the point when you depart. Customs will approve your form if everything is in order. You then take the approved form to get paid.

There waterfront is a treasure trove of boutiques and art galleries, filled with treats for you, your home and your friends! It’s a great place to browse and find something completely unique. And the flat, pedestrianised avenues of Plymouth city centre are a shopper’s paradise, with popular big brands and luxury names on offer.
Southside Street Enjoy a relaxed browse in the shops and galleries along the main street of the Barbican. 27 New Street In this cluster of old storehouses, tucked away on the Barbican, you’ll find one of the largest collections of antique traders in the South West. It’s as much a curios museum as it is a place to shop and a great place for a wander – who knows what you’ll find!

Visitors to the Barcode will notice a striking piece of artwork on the main staircase at the development. Showcasing Plymouth’s little-known connection to Hollywood, the glass screens on the main staircase feature 12 of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Marilyn Monroe, Richard Gere and Jane Fonda. The design is inspired by the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims who set off from Plymouth to the new world of America in 1620. The descendants of the 102 passengers then went onto become some of the world’s most famous actors, including Clint Eastwood and Sigourney Weaver who also feature on the artwork. The Barcode is now also home to several of the UK’s favourite restaurants, including Zizzi, Five Guys, Nando’s and Cosy Club, where visitors can tuck into a range of cuisines, from Italy’s finest pasta to America’s tastiest burgers.
