Art in Public Places
REDMOND'S ABUNDANT PUBLIC ART IS A SOURCE OF IMMENSE COMMUNITY PRIDE.
e recent renaissance in downtown Redmond has led to a greater appreciation for art and culture, as well as a deeper understanding of how art builds a sense of place, community and aesthetic harmony.
Redmond’s foray into public art began with two generous donations to the City, from a wonderful anonymous donor. is set in motion the creation of the Redmond Commission for Art in Public Places (RCAPP) and through their dedicated e orts and programs, have led to the permanent placement of numerous art pieces throughout Redmond.
With the e orts of RCAPP, the City of Redmond recently changed the city code to permit murals. With the help of a grant from Visit Central Oregon, Redmond now has a colorful new mural in the 500 block of SW Evergreen. Murals are a creative way to tell stories, inspire creativity and to create "Kodak moments", where people want to snap pictures and send them to family and friends.
RCAPP’s Art Around the Clock program features several “on loan” pieces for a two-year showing. is outdoor gallery includes a select showing of juried pieces designed to enhance the beauty and livability of our community. ese creative works of art, displayed on a two-year rotation, are available for purchase by the public and one select piece is chosen by the community to keep.
At the completion of each gallery season, the community eagerly welcomes the opportunity to vote on the “People’s Choice” award. e piece receiving the most votes is then purchased by RCAPP and is permanently added to the City’s public art collection. With each new acquisition, Redmond’s identity and artistic expression is proudly enhanced.
