Convention Facilities Reno Events Center
L
Located in the entertainment center of downtown Reno, the $65 million Reno Events Center offers 118,000 square feet of space for events that range from top-notch entertainment to a myriad of conventions and conferences. “We can do just about anything in this building,” said Joe Kelley, Vice President of Facilities for the RSCVA. “The Association of Progressive Rental Organizations (APTRO) recently held their tradeshow here. This national organization travels to sites all over the country, and their event has large freight considerations and a wide variety of exhibitors — from flat-screen TVs to washers, dryers and furniture.” Other groups to use the Reno Events Center include Kiwanis International, Western Winter Sports Representatives Association and the Western Propane Gas Association, to name a few. The first floor of the facility has 56,000 square feet of floor space, with 7,500 seats that are divided into telescopic

stadium seating, balcony and floor seating. The Reno Events Center also includes four snack bars and elevator- and escalator-access to the second floor. Two 20by-20-foot freight doors provide easy drive-in access to the facility. There are two loading docks, backstage dressing rooms with a dining area, wireless Internet and LAN access, and wheelchair-accessible ticket windows and entrances. On the second floor, the facility offers 10 meeting spaces or suite rooms ranging from 400 to 835 square feet for a total of 4,954 square feet of diverse, usable space. Additional balcony seating, accommodating 285 seats in three rows, is located outside the suites. Perhaps one of the Reno Events Center’s biggest benefits is its location. In addition to its proximity to more than 6,500 hotel rooms and world-class dining and gaming, it’s just across the street from the critically acclaimed National Bowling Stadium and the Reno Ballroom.

Convention Facilities National Bowling Stadium
S
Since it opened in 1995, Reno’s National Bowling Stadium (NBS) — dubbed the “Taj Mahal of Tenpins” by the Los Angeles Times — has captivated more than 900,000 bowlers and guests and has been showcased to millions of fans via national coverage of major bowling tournaments in the last decade. “No other bowling facility in the world can offer this kind of experience,” said Bob Thomas, operations manager for the $52 million NBS. The facility, located across the street from the Reno Events Center and the Reno Ballroom, is within walking distance of major casinos, more than 6,500 hotel rooms, the Reno arts and culture district and an exciting whitewater park. In addition to hosting the largest bowling tournaments in the world, the NBS is home to other big events, including unforgettable activities for meeting and convention planners. NBS boasts a 172-seat, four-story, giant-screen theater

with the ability to accommodate 8/70-format (IWERKS) films with a six-channel digital surround-sound audio system for convention needs; and special lighting and wiring systems for electronic and print media. “The NBS has been the setting for numerous conventions and social events of up to 2,000 guests,” Thomas said. “With a 10,000-square-foot concourse area that can be set up with round tables for a banquet and a staging and dancing area for live bands and DJs, the NBS provides a great party atmosphere.” The NBS hosts the USBC bowling tournaments for men and women. “We have a great professional staff that works with each group to provide first-class service, so everyone is treated like a VIP,” Thomas said. “Because the facility is not open for public bowling, groups can have exclusive use of this world-class facility, making it an ideal location for group team-building and after-hours functions.”

Convention Facilities Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center
D
Don’t be fooled by the name — the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center (RSLEC) is a fitting venue for a variety of events, even those that don’t feature any four-legged creatures.
The climate-controlled main arena has seating for 6,200 people, three show offices and a 150-by-300-foot dirt-floor arena.
Although the RSLEC is the home base for a list of prestigious equine and rodeo events, including the nationally televised Reno Rodeo, it also is a favorite venue for youth and collegiate sporting competitions, motocross and national monster truck events.
The Livestock Pavilion, connected to the main arena via tunnel, comprises a 1,000-seat arena or auction area, a 100-by-125-foot covered cutting area and a 90-by-200-foot outdoor arena.
There is a surprising variety of consumer-based shows that take place at the RSLEC, featuring everything from antiques, trains and cars to RV and boat sales. Every November, thousands of skiers flock to the facility for the highly successful University of Nevada, Reno Ski Swap, looking for great bargains for the soon-to-start ski season. The RSLEC is situated on 43 acres of land located a few minutes from downtown Reno and 10 minutes from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The building features two indoor and two outdoor arenas, 3,100 paved and lighted parking spaces, 660 10-by-12-foot animal stalls and a 20,000-square-foot exhibition hall.

Showcased on millions of TV screens around the world during the Reno Rodeo, the RSLEC rodeo arena has 9,491 seats, plus viewing suites and a 325-by-170-foot dirt-floor arena. The facility’s 20,000-square-foot, climate-controlled exhibition hall has a 100-by-200-foot cement floor. For livestock events, the RSLEC has 19 barns on the property in addition to the stalls, as well as convenient wash racks for horses, 216 multi-use stalls and 266 exhibitor truck and trailer spaces. For caretakers, the center also features 42 full-hookup RV spaces and an RV dump station. Adjacent to I-80 and Highway 395, the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center is easy to access, with a variety of hotels within a short driving distance.

Reno-Tahoe hotels offer a vast array of options
P
Planning a successful meeting or convention means striving to ensure the utmost satisfaction of all attendees, and picking appropriate lodging is central to this goal. Fortunately, as a premier vacation destination, America’s Adventure Place offers a huge array of lodging options. From grandiose casinos and elegant resorts to slope-side lodges and plenty of rooms with a view, the hotels of RenoTahoe have something to offer nearly every event participant. With such a diverse selection of hotels, each within a short distance of the area’s top attractions, convention planners
should have no problem booking rooms that suit their guests — and their budgets. The following pages comprise a sample of the hotels found in the Reno-Tahoe area. Along with a photo of each hotel, you’ll find a description of the lodging and its amenities. Many of the sites offer their own meeting and convention facilities, and the dimensions of these spaces are listed as well. A principal contact is featured for every hotel, so it’s easy to find out more information about the property or to reserve a block of rooms in America’s Adventure Place.

Adventure & Entertainment Outdoor fun swings with the seasons
W
Whitewater eddies and rolling greens surface swiftly as the city’s neon lights start to fade in the distance. Locals and visitors alike call Reno-Tahoe “America’s Adventure Place” because exciting outdoor activities are only steps away from bustling downtown entertainment. Ride the river When Reno completed its Truckee River Whitewater Park in November 2003, it gained national attention as one of the first cities to choose an urban location to develop a whitewater recreational attraction — on a centrally located river. “A large part of the appeal of the Truckee River Whitewater Park is its easy access,” said Jay Kincaid, the 2003 World Freestyle Kayak Champion. “Rather than having to drive for miles and then hike to an access point, I can just head downtown and drop in.”
Go golfing Like Kincaid, many professional athletes have made RenoTahoe their home, as the high desert promises more than 300 sunny days for year-round training. Scott McCarron, for instance, is a 15-year veteran of the PGA tour who has lived and played golf in the area for more than five years. “With so many different and challenging courses in the area and the mild climate making for a long golf season, there’s no better place to be if you love to golf,” said McCarron, a threetime winner on the PGA tour. Annually, Montrêux Golf and Country Club hosts the PGA’s Reno-Tahoe Open with a field of top professionals competing for a $3 million purse. Then there’s the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe, which features the biggest names in sports and entertainment.

Adventure & Entertainment
The tranquility of 50 spectacular golf courses is within a 90minute drive of Reno. The area possibly offers the golf game of a lifetime. “At high altitude, golf balls automatically fly 10 percent further,” said Nick Schon, the assistant pro at Montrêux. Named one of Golf Digest’s “Top 50 Golf Destinations” in 2000, Reno-Tahoe’s impressive selection of signature courses welcomes every level of player to the green. Affectionately referred to as the “St. Andrews of the Sierra,” Northgate provides players with a challenging Scottish links-style experience. Three-time host of the PGA Senior Tour, Wildcreek Golf Course in Sparks offers spectacular views of the city and Sierra Nevada. Hit the trails Away from the manicured greens and raked bunkers, RenoTahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada have a wild side that entices explorers with endless opportunities to wear out hiking shoes and mountain-bike suspensions. “The Mount Rose Wilderness is the closest wilderness to an urban center in the continental United States,” said Holly Coughlin, chair of the Sierra Club’s Great Basin Group. The native Nevadan said she finds solitude in her hikes just minutes away from the city’s front door. In Reno-Tahoe, there is terrain for all levels of ability. Some might prefer the thrills and panoramas of the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail, which circles the ridge line around Lake Tahoe at heights of up to 10,000 feet. Others may choose a leisurely, shaded stroll beneath the cottonwood trees that line the Truckee River. Create your own adventure Visitors can explore numerous parks and recreational areas that are no more than 15 minutes from the heart of Reno. The Sierra is an ideal backdrop for favorite pastimes such as bird watching, horseback riding, rock climbing and even off-road Hummer tours. For a new perspective on things, a plane, hang glider or helicopter might provide a different vantage point. From highadrenaline sky diving to silently floating in a hot air balloon, the skies above Reno-Tahoe hold many unforgettable adventures. With Lake Tahoe and several other surrounding lakes in close proximity, vacationers will get ready quickly to unpack the swimsuits. From boating, sailing and fishing to canoeing, swimming and whitewater rafting, Reno-Tahoe has it all. Play in the powder With 18 world-class ski, snowboard and cross-country resorts and more than 22,000 acres of ski-able terrain, Reno-Tahoe provides skiers and snowboarders with endless powder possibilities. In fact, Reno-Tahoe boasts the largest concentration of mountain resorts in North America, all located within 90 minutes of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The region’s largest resort, Heavenly Lake Tahoe, is a 4,800acre playground with jaw-dropping views of Lake Tahoe. Such inspiring scenic beauty, along with the exhilarating experience of California’s longest vertical drop — 3,500 feet — ranked Heavenly among Ski Magazine’s “Top 20 Ski Resorts in North America” in 2002.

Squaw Valley USA, site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, is another legendary destination. A tram at the resort swiftly connects the new pedestrian village to High Camp with its restaurants, shops, Olympic museum and mountain-top ice rink. At an elevation of 7,900 feet, there’s also Mt. Rose — Ski Tahoe, Lake Tahoe’s highest base ski area. The Chutes, a 200-acre challenge for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders, increase the ski-able terrain at Mt. Rose — Ski Tahoe to 1,200 acres. Long-known as a locals’ mountain, it’s just 25 minutes from downtown Reno to the Northwest Magnum lift. Just across the hill in Incline Village, Diamond Peak’s vertical drop of 1,840 feet offers a high base and summit elevation capturing plenty of snow, along with some of the most impressive highaltitude views of Lake Tahoe. Ski packages and shuttle service from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and many hotel-casinos are available. Many snowmobile enthusiasts also like to zoom through the Sierra Nevada’s fresh powder. Or, for a slower-paced exploration of nature, tour the mountainside on a horse-drawn sleigh or a dog sled, snuggling under wool blankets while sipping hot chocolate. Snowshoeing or cross-country skiing are other ideal alternatives that combine a great cardiovascular workout with the opportunity to catch stunning views of winter’s untouched world. Visitors can find an outdoor winter adventure right in downtown Reno at the seasonal Rink on the River. Rent skates, take lessons or even host a party at this urban ice rink. America’s Adventure Place It’s not hard to tell why Reno-Tahoe is called “America’s Adventure Place,” as visitors here can access an array of outdoor adventures any time of the year.

Adventure & Entertainment Tap into Reno-Tahoe entertainment
B
Beyond snow-covered slopes and sparkling casinos beats a pulse not fueled by adrenaline or jackpot wins. It’s a vibration — a frequency that can be traced only to Reno’s vital arts and culture scene. Museums and galleries, rock concerts and classical ballets, historical landmarks and new shopping establishments all await the guests of Reno-Tahoe, America’s Adventure Place. “Reno-Tahoe has a vibrant arts community — everything from large museums to underground cultural events,” said Ann Wolfe, curator of the Nevada Museum of Art. Reno’s Truckee River Arts District is the place where a multimillion dollar whitewater park runs through a rapidly evolving corridor of hip restaurants, cafés, lounges, museums and specialty shops, all of which are a part of the colorful urban rebirth that has made the district a hub for locals and visitors day and night. These unique businesses are located within

walking distance of downtown hotels and meeting facilities, making it convenient for attendees to explore Reno’s arts, culture and entertainment. Galleries As Northern Nevada’s center for the visual arts and the centerpiece of the Truckee River Arts District, the Nevada Museum of Art (NMA) showcases diverse creations on four levels. Exhibits include regional artists and national shows such as “Andy Warhol’s Dream America” and “Yosemite: Art of an American Icon,” including works by Ansel Adams and David Hockney. Groups can rent the museum’s rooftop sculpture garden, the theater or the grand hall for sophisticated off-site functions of any size. Outside the museum walls, art continues to permeate the social fabric of the area. Sierra Arts, a nonprofit local art foundation, works to weave the arts into education and public
Mere minutes away and housed in an award-winning building, is the Stremmel Gallery, specializing in contemporary art and offering appraisals, framing, restoration and auctions.
To grasp the story of the Silver State fully, a visit to nearby Virginia City, America’s largest designated historic landmark, is in order. Behind swinging saloon doors and wooden sidewalks, restored buildings of this Comstock town silently tell the stories of mining millionaires, as well as literary legend Mark Twain, who spent the early part of his career writing for a local newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise. Festivals
Museums Reno-Tahoe is steeped in history. The best place to explore the region’s past is the Nevada Historical Society, Nevada’s oldest museum. Artifacts here describe Nevada’s native people, first explorers, the discovery of silver and gold, and the emergence of ranching and gaming industries.
With a cultural pulse that never skips a beat, RenoTahoe hosts 175 days of special events — year-round. Hot August Nights celebrates America’s nostalgic love of vintage automobiles. Other highlights include the Reno Rodeo, the Lake Tahoe Jazz Festival, the Great Reno Balloon Race and the National Championship Air Races.
At the May Arboretum and Botanical Garden, animal trophies and remarkable relics tell stories of Wilbur D. May’s 40 trips around the world.
“Our area has so many unique and diverse activities,” said Natasha Bourlin, marketing manager of Artown, a monthlong celebration of cultural diversity and artistic innovation in the Reno area.
For a different taste of the olden times, there’s the National Automobile Museum, which showcases more than 200 antique, vintage, classic and special-interest vehicles in authentic street scenes. Four-wheeled icons like the 1953 Corvette convertible once owned by John Wayne gladly frame unconventional, off-site company meetings. Historic stops A half-hour drive south of Reno is Carson City — Nevada’s state capital — where Northern Nevada’s history is on display at places such as the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
Now in its 12th year, Artown brings the outer reaches of imagination to the center of attention. Each July, the festival hosts more than 300 — mostly free — citywide events. The longest-running cultural tradition in Reno-Tahoe is the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Staged in an outdoor amphitheater in Sand Harbor State Park, the Lake Tahoe shoreline might tame the shrew and put an extra ounce of romance into Romeo and Juliet. “The view of the lake and the mountains makes this one of the most spectacular settings in America,” said Vicki

McGowen, a Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival Board Member. “Now in its 35th season, the festival has continued to increase the quality of performances with better music and better directors.” Performing arts In downtown Reno, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts lights up with productions of Broadway classics such as Evita and Annie. The Masterworks Chorale, the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sierra Nevada Ballet and the Nevada Opera provide audiences with dramatically engaging entertainment. Beneath the Pioneer Center — literally — is Magic Underground, one of only three theaters in the United States devoted entirely to magic. Magicians Kalin and Jinger present impossible illusions and mysterious wonders in an intimate, memorable venue. Across the street, Reno-Tahoe guests will find yet another home for the performing arts — the Brüka Theater, known for quirky plays and clever productions. Shopping, dining and nightlife After a day at the museums or an evening of live entertainment, Reno-Tahoe visitors may wish to relax with a leisurely stroll, perhaps stopping to shop or dine on a tasty meal. At the River Walk in downtown Reno, they can do both. Marble and granite grace the banks of the Truckee River, and bronze sculptures depict Nevada’s wildlife, making the walkway a focal point not just for shopping and dining, but also for the Reno River Festival in May and the Wine Walk on the third Saturday of the month. A few streets over, leisure-seekers will find California Avenue, or as locals call it, “CalAve,” another trendy area for retail establishments and eateries in the Truckee River Arts District. “CalAve is an eclectic mix of stores with one-of-a-kind items you can’t get anywhere else but in L.A., Hollywood or New York,” said Mike Hall, owner of the Kalifornia Jean Bar on California Avenue. Stylish boutiques such as Clay Nichols, Shoe and Liv, an iconic, Planet Blue-inspired body-care store, turn shopping into an art form. Popular dining spots such as Blue Moon Pizza, The Cheese Board, Voila and the chic Chocolate Bar add their own delicious flavors to this district. Whether you’re hoping to find the perfect outfit, the prettiest gift or both, Reno also is home to indoor and outdoor malls that should fit the bill for all your retail needs. outdoor lifestyle mall, with Dillard’s and Orvis as anchors and more than 70 stores, including Banana Republic, Coach, and Pottery Barn. Beautiful bronze sculptures peppered throughout The Summit redefine the art of high-end shopping. Opening in 2008, The Legends at Sparks Marina will feature a 248,000-square-foot Scheels store and many different specialty shops and boutiques staffed by experts. For those who prefer to shop indoors, Meadowood Mall has more than 125 shops and restaurants, including American Eagle Outfitters, The Sharper Image, Macy’s and Sears. Once you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped, head out on the town for a spellbinding night of glamorous fun. The RenoTahoe area bustles with an exciting nightlife that pulses to the rhythms of clinging slots and high-octane entertainment. Keno, poker, blackjack, roulette — no matter what your game, opportunities abound to savor the dizzying exhilaration of putting your luck on the line. If gaming isn’t your thing, take in a show. Reno-Tahoe always has it going on and features live performances every night by legendary entertainers. On any given weekend, national headliners take the stage at area casinos, cabarets, clubs and lounges. In addition, hotel-casinos deal out their own shows such as Dancing Queen — a Tribute to ABBA, or Rawhide, a Greg Thompson-produced, country-themed stage show. Reno’s newest nightclub, Nikki Beach at Grand Sierra, is a celebrity-driven, pool-side hotspot that puts an exclamation mark to the region’s exciting, upscale nightlife. Catch some classic tunes at a rock concert or laugh out loud during a comedy show. One thing’s for sure: There’s something for everyone in Reno-Tahoe. Cultural pulse With every heart beat, Reno-Tahoe sends off a vibe that reminds visitors that America’s Adventure Place has an ace up its sleeve that’s called arts and culture — with which the region turns even the everyday into an extraordinary day.

Rose – Ski Tahoe simplify the experience and make a day on the epic slopes of Tahoe a memorable part of your meeting. Rose can accommodate groups from 10 to 200, and breakfast and lunch options are available. Make it a meeting to remember with a little downtime at Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe.

Record attendance is a hallmark of a Reno-Tahoe meeting. Take advantage of our colorful and welldeveloped attendance-boosting, pre-promotional materials enclosed in your services packet. Your organization qualifies for complimentary materials based on a formula of 1.5 per-blocked sleeping rooms on your peak night. Additional quantities over and above your complimentary allotment may be purchased at cost. Ask us about our photo store. We have a great selection of local area and attraction photos that will add some pizazz to your promotional materials. In addition, we offer logo Web site links.
Note: Registration equipment such as computers, typewriters and cash boxes are not provided by RSCVA. To help us secure proper staffing for your event, requests for personnel should be made at least 30 days in advance of the meeting date. Any requests received after the deadline may not be fulfilled. All requests are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Uniforms are furnished by the RSCVA and are worn by the registration personnel during the meeting’s registration hours. We would be happy to discuss your staffing needs and to provide you with a copy of our Policy and Guidelines. Please contact Bonnie Kriens, Convention Services Manager, at 775-827-7639 or bkriens@rscva.com.
Contact us one year prior to your Reno event to inquire about Convention Services Management attending your organization’s meeting. A Convention Services manager’s presence is to promote attendance for your future event in Reno. Just as important, we’ll have the opportunity to learn how your event works, get an insight into the constituents who attend and be better informed about your needs and requirements in the future. Pre- and post-adventure opportunities are a natural course of events in the Reno/Tahoe area. Come a day early or stay a day later or, as we say here in Reno, “Extend Your Stay.” Visit www.visitrenotahoe.com and click on the “Extend Your Stay” icon. You will be amazed at just how much there is to see and do.

Steamboat Villa Hot Springs Spa 16010 S. Virginia St., PO Box 18106 ■ Reno, NV, 89511 Phone: 775-853-6600 Steamboat Hot Springs Geyser Basin is located 11 miles south of Reno on Highway 395. It is the oldest known site in the world of continuous hot spring activity producing surface mineral deposits. Early visitors to the area were impressed with the power of the Steamboat area. David Palmer wrote in 1861, “The ground trembles here and scalding water sullies forth from cracks in the earth. Jets of steam engulf the land and the air is heavy with the scent of brimstone and sulfur. The most numerous geothermal features on the site are fumeroles, or steam vents, which vary from very small ‘peephole’ to large ‘whistlers’ and ‘blowholes.’”
