ALL YEAR. NOTHING LESS. NESTLED AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE NEVADA high desert and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, this region revels in contrasts. Towering pines and vast desert expanses. Food trucks and five-star dining. Eclectic urban murals and gleaming alpine lakes. The world’s highest climbing wall and Burning Man. No rest from the beautiful here. No breathers for adventure seekers, fun lovers and free spirits. There’s caution-to-the-wind skiing and biking for adrenaline junkies, a hip day-n-night urban scene, museums and music for culture vultures, and gorgeous scenery drenched in 300 days of sunshine. Reno has come into its own with a robust mix of heavy hitters who have set up shop in this techsavvy city, and a burgeoning arts community now takes to the streets with murals, sculptures and installation art. Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, is within easy driving distance of Reno. Its pristine waters are a summer sweet spot for paddleboarders, kayakers and fishing enthusiasts. The surrounding mountains provide a winter playhouse for snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and tubing. No matter how outsized your wishes are or off-thehook your ambitions may be, seek and ye shall find your level of adventure in Reno Tahoe. VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

FULL THROTTLE. WARM DAYS, HOT FUN! Reno Tahoe goes full throttle in
summer with a diverse array of activities to fill your day. Carb-load for the grueling 9.7-mile round-trip hike that takes you to the top of Mount Rose, or explore one of the many trails that wind through Reno’s regional parks. Ascend 164 vertical feet at BaseCamp, the world’s tallest climbing wall. Outside of Reno, worldclass rock-climbing is found at Lover’s Leap, Big Chief, Eagle Canyon and Donner Summit. The Flume Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail reward intrepid bikers with stunningly beautiful scenery, while the Truckee River Bike Path runs through downtown Reno to Sparks. Reno lays claim to the state’s oldest links—Washoe County Golf Course, established in 1934—and Montrêux Golf Club, home of the PGA TOUR'S Barracuda Championship. Edgewood Tahoe, rated one of Golf Digest’s top 25 public U.S. golf courses, hosts the American Century Championship in July. Hone your stand-up paddling skills on Lake Tahoe, or rent a sailboat or kayak and head across the lake for a picnic at a local beach. Rock ’n’ roll through Class I to Class III rapids on the Truckee River. The Truckee River has a catch-and-release section just for fly-fishing. Pyramid Lake, located 45 minutes north of Reno, is a world-class fishing spot, with record-sized trout and other freshwater fish. (These you get to keep.) 4

ADRENALINE RUSH. WINTER BLANKETS NORTH AMERICA’S largest concentration of ski resorts with 400 inches of plush-pile powder each year. It’s catnip for the world’s best skiers and boarders, who descend on Reno Tahoe’s legendary ski resorts to test themselves on impeccably groomed runs and adrenaline-drenched terrain. Tahoe’s world-class skiing is within an hour’s drive of Reno. It’s only 22 miles from a RNO airline gate to the slopes of Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and its 9,700-foot elevation. Diamond Peak is just 11 miles farther—scenic runs perched above Lake Tahoe. There are more than a dozen downhill and cross-country resorts stretching from North Tahoe to Donner Summit, and another three from South Lake Tahoe. Tahoe’s mountains include those famous across the ski and ride world—Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics; Northstar, with its pipes and parks; Heavenly's two-state skiing. Reno Tahoe brings on a blizzard of winter outdoor adventures for the whole family. Cross-country skiers can experience spectacular scenery on the beautifully groomed trails at Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner Ski Area and Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area. Heavenly’s 500-foot long tubing hill, named the #1 Tubing Hill in America, heads a list of tubing and sledding parks located throughout the area. Ice skaters can perfect their triple lutzes on the area’s three outdoor skating rinks. Judges’ ruling: 10! VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

BURSTING WITH VITALITY AND ENERGY, Reno’s burgeon-
ing arts scene has become as much a draw for visitors as the area’s famous casinos and legendary alpine lake. Local and internationally-renowned artists have transformed Reno’s urban landscape into a virtual outdoor gallery of more than 170 vibrant murals, sculptures and temporary art installations. The Nevada Museum of Art hosts both international touring exhibits and special shows, featuring works from its own collection and those of other museums. The National Automobile Museum stores 200 vintage, classic and special-interest automobiles and a priceless collection of horseless carriages. The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum offers hands-on science exploration for all ages. World-class musicians, singers, dancers and other performers take the stage year-round in the Reno Tahoe area. Pops on the River and Broadway on the Beach are popular offerings of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra. Located downtown, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts hosts classic and contemporary works by A.V.A. Ballet Theater and other events. Outdoor venues don’t get more spectacular than the stage and natural amphitheater at Sand Harbor State Park, home to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Outdoor festivals fill the summer calendar with music from Reno’s riverside to Lake Tahoe’s shoreline. VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

DYNAMIC DUO: RENO AND SPARKS. MAKE IT A DAY OF EXPERIENCING the distinctive personalities of these Nevada neighbors. Power up with a hearty breakfast at Two Chicks or another popular Reno MidTown eatery. Then head to Junkee to shop for the hottest indie looks or browse for some more treasures at the Antique Mall. Still need to work off all of that breakfast? Head to the indoor bouldering park BaseCamp, home to the tallest climbing wall on the planet at 164 feet. The park also includes an extensive kids area. If water is your natural habitat, take the plunge at the Truckee River Whitewater Park, which has a kayak course and 11 drop pools with awesome standing waves. The historic downtown of Sparks is a mere ten minutes from Reno. If you're in need of some lunch, grab a burger and a beer at the Great Basin Brewery Company, Nevada’s oldest brewery with award-winning suds, then take in the vintage steam locomotive, cupola caboose and Pullman car stationed outside the Sparks Museum and Cultural Center. Inside the museum, exhibits trace the town’s evolution from a ranching and mining center to its role in the Space Age. Walk along Sparks Marina or head to the Outlets at Sparks for cool shopping and fun at big-name brand stores like Scheels—the world’s largest all-sports store— or the multiple screens of Galaxy Luxury+ IMAX theater. MAKE THE 103-MILE LOOP DRIVE through historic and scenic nuggets of Northern Nevada. In the 1880s, Virginia City was home to the Comstock Lode, the largest deposit of silver ore ever discovered, and one of the largest mining camps west of the Rockies. Stroll the wooden boardwalk in the footsteps of Mark Twain, who started his writing career here. Shop or stop at a historic watering hole; visit Fourth Ward School Museum and Comstock Wild Horse and Mining Museum. Late May through October, hop on the historic V&T Railroad from Carson City to Virginia City. Follow the curves around mountain ridges by car for a taste of why this route is a motorcyclist’s delight. Carson City is capital of the Silver State and home to Nevada State Museum and State Railroad Museum. From there, Highway 50 heads straight up into the mighty Sierra Nevada peaks. Just off Spooner Summit are scenic hiking trails and world-famous mountain biking on the Flume Trail. Highway 28 descends from there to Tahoe’s shoreline, dotted with gorgeous views. Sand Harbor State Park is a scenic gem of white sand beaches and huge granite boulders. Stop in Incline Village for coffee, food or the Tahoe Science Center, with 3-D movies. Then head over Highway 431 back toward Reno, with a stop at a scenic overlook or to stretch your legs on the Tahoe Rim Trail.

RENO HAS BECOME AN INCUBATOR for artistic creativity and experimentation—including vivid murals, sculptures and art installations. Take a self-guided tour of nearly 100 larger-than-life murals by local, national and international artists. Visit artspotreno.com to download maps, or you can join a docent-led tour the second Saturday of every month. The Playa Art Trail explores the city’s growing collection of sculptures created during the Burning Man event. Rotating pieces include the "Space Whale," a 50-foot stained-glass-and-steel humpback whale mother and calf, and a huge electric dandelion. For more information on the displays, go to artspotreno.com. On the first Thursday of the month, participating downtown galleries open their doors to showcase works by local artists. Peruse, purchase and give the artists their props while savoring wine and small bites from local purveyors. Lofts and warehouses in Reno’s Riverwalk and downtown have been converted into creative spaces for artists, spawning open studios and galleries. Watch artists in action at Reno Art Works and stop by the Sierra Arts Gallery along the river. Metro Art Gallery is located on the first floor of Reno City Hall nearby. A few blocks further is the spectacular architecture of Nevada Museum of Art, with sculptures outside and a world-class collection inside.

RENO TAHOE VISITOR PLANNER
GETTING HERE IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK! Several direct flights are available from all parts of the country, including the Midwest and the East Coast. Check out a list of airlines serving the Reno-Tahoe International Airport by going to VisitRenoTahoe.com/flights. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is one the country’s most convenient airports, with baggage claim, rental cars, parking and transportation close to the boarding gates. Many major resort hotels and casinos are within a 10-minute drive, and there are free shuttles from the airport to most hotels. If you travel by car, Reno and Sparks are located at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. 395/I-580. I-80 provides all-weather access across Donner Summit from Central and Northern California. From Southern California, it's a straight shot up U.S. 395 just east of the Sierra Nevada. From the Northwest, take I-5 south to I-80 or, in the spring and summer, opt for the shortcut that leaves I-5 at Mount Shasta and follows California 89 and 44 southeast through Susanville. You can use the railroads as a third option, with Amtrak’s California Zephyr, which arrives daily from the Bay Area and Sacramento to the west, and Salt Lake City and Denver to the east. Trains from the Northwest, coastal Southern California and the Central Valley connect to the Zephyr in Sacramento.
