HERITAGE There comes a time to forget about what’s next and give in to the wonder of what’s happened. Preservation Society’s walking tours to get a fascinating glimpse of our heritage, whether through traces of pioneer wagons or an informal walk through historic neighborhoods in downtown Reno. Nearly all of Virginia City is a historic site. It is the largest federally designated historical district in America. Highlights include the Fourth Ward School, Piper’s Opera House, and the newspaper for which Mark Twain toiled as Samuel Clemens. Don’t miss the V&T Railroad tour, a 35-minute round-trip tour that takes you from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back. Truckee is also rich in historical significance. It was named in 1844 for a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide thousands of emigrants in their westward journey through 40 miles of desert. Truckee is well-known for the unforgiving Emigrant Trail, as well as for the tragic expedition of the Donner Party. You can discover much more about their captivating history at Donner Memorial State Park museum and Pioneer Monument. Lake Tahoe is famous for more than its breathtaking lake and ski resorts. There’s a wealth of fascinating communities and unique historic spots along its 72mile perimeter. Highlights include the Thunderbird Lodge Estate (listed in the National Register of Historic Places), the Erhman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point State Park, the 150-acre Tallac historic site, and the spectacular Vikingsholm Castle at the head of Emerald Bay. Experience the artwork of some of this area’s distant ancestors by visiting one of many ancient rock art sites, some of which date back more than 10,000 years. Explore the fascinating petroglyphs at Grimes Point, ten miles east of Fallon, as well as carvings in solid granite near the crest of Donner Summit at Kyburz Flat. Two other places to view rock art are Hickson summit, just past Austin on Hwy 50 E, and Toquima Cave, located just beyond the junction of State Route 376 and U.S. Highway 50. From unique to chic, Reno-Tahoe is a shopping haven! Barn, Banana Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch, the Apple Store and many others. And of course, savvy shoppers must peruse longtime favorite Meadowood Mall—with over 100 stores including Wet Seal, GAP, Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret. An essential part of Reno’s urban renaissance is downtown Reno’s Riverwalk, built along the revived Truckee River. It’s a great spot for antiquing, dining, and

browsing your way through a variety of boutiques and galleries. With parks, coffee shops, and a boulder-laced kayak course, the scene is nothing short of ideal. Only a few blocks removed from the river is CalAve, a hoppin’ neighborhood retail district of shady lanes and fine restaurants. A few miles upstream from downtown Reno and with a front row seat to the Truckee River, is the Patagonia Outlet Store, located within Patagonia’s main distribution center. You’ll find not only great deals on quality clothing and gear, but you’ll also enjoy a wonderful retreat among hills, cottonwoods and a river beyond the front doors. Complete all of your

outdoor gear needs by trekking to Orvis, Cabela’s, or R.E.I., where local staffers just might clue you in to the best fishing or hiking spots. Nearby Sparks continues the shopping scene with Victorian Square Mall, Legends entertainment complex, and the Sparks Marina. At Victorian Square, in between annual events like Hot August Nights, the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off, and numerous street fairs, including the Farmer’s Market every Thursday during summer, you’ll find plenty of places to dine and shop. Highlights include an excellent brewpub, Mexican and Italian restaurants, and a variety of antiques, jewelry and

gift shops. If location is everything, then Truckee has it all, including shopping. Set cozily between Sierra Nevada peaks, Truckee is just 30 miles west of Reno and 12 miles north of Lake Tahoe. Nestled amidst rich history, towering mountains, trees, and alpine lakes, you’ll find stores of every variety. Shop for antiques, art, books, adult and children’s clothing, home furnishings, jewelry, gifts, and much more. And if you find name-brand savings hard to resist, head straight to the Factory Outlets in Truckee. For shopping with picturesque Lake Tahoe within your sight, visit the Tahoe City Marina Mall and the Boatworks Mall. The Tahoe City Marina Mall showcases the Rubicon Collection shop which features Oriental rugs, creative lighting and home furnishings. The Boatworks Mall offers everything from assorted chocolates and fine wine to home accessories and reproduced hand-painted furniture. The Reno-Tahoe area offers shopping experiences to suit everyone, from the casual shopper to the serious buyer. Find out more at visitrenotahoe.com/shopping.

From comfort food meals to formal, multi-course dinners, from Asian fusion to modern American, we serve up an abundant restaurant scene. In fact, many of our hotel/casinos have drawn the talents of world-class chefs. Their desire to make every meal a superior one has boosted and bolstered our dining options even further. Diversity is one of the keys to Reno dining. You’ll find flavors from all flags: Mexican, Chinese, Indian, French, German, Cajun, Basque, Italian, Japanese, and

Thai, for starters. Whether tiny, hole-in-thewall places or white tablecloth establishments, they bring a richness that reflects the changing palette of American dining. Steak and seafood are also big hits, as they have been for years. The classic fare of big, thick steaks, fresh fish, tangy oysters, and exciting sushi creations can be found in many of the hotels and resorts, as well as those well-loved local spots around town. And no mention of dining is complete without tipping our hats to the fine wines so many restaurants feature. Bring it all together—the atmosphere, the wine, the friendship, and lastly, the food—and

Imperial Bar & Lounge, photo by Niklaus Blades.

Choose your supercharged pleasure: non-stop 24-hour gaming action, or a colorful array of entertainment venues.

ADD MORE LIFE TO YOUR NIGHT. The night side of Reno-Tahoe burns with an intensity that’s equally as bright as the daytime. And since everything is located within close proximity, it couldn’t be easier to experience all of it. Slot machine fans inevitably find the row of slots that’s got a feeling of “just right.” At the same time, those who prefer their fun in the form of cards and dice in time find themselves swept away in a sea of excitement. When it’s time for other diversions, kick back and catch a show at one of the many showrooms that are at the center of the

casino scene. Or slide into the wee, small hours with a touch of song or dance or both at a local cabaret. One of our newest and most exciting attractions is the Reno Events Center. A magnet for top-name performers, the Events Center—near a variety of restaurants, clubs and pubs—is just one of many reasons people are coming to downtown Reno.

Pyramid Lake and Gerlach Pyramid Lake—named for the 22O miles tufa rock formation jutting out from its eastern shore—is as stunning today as it was when John C. Fremont, the first European to lay eyes on Pyramid, named it more than 160 years ago. Pyramid Lake is famous for its abundance of hefty cutthroat trout. The surrounding area is known for it’s ancient Paiute Indian rock carvings. If you’re planning on making a Pyramid Lake side trip this year, take it a bit further and head for Gerlach. This small desert town is the gateway to the Black Rock Desert, home of the “Burning Man” Festival and a beacon for speed freaks. In 1997 on the flat playa near Gerlach, an over-amped hybrid of rocket and race car became the first land vehicle to crack the speed of sound. Eight miles northwest is Planet X, a nationally renowned pottery studio. TRIP LENGTH

Truckee TRIP LENGTH

beautiful Truckee River canyon, eventually arriving at the charming California town that once housed logging and ice manufacturing and now hosts charming shops and restaurants. In Truckee you’re greeted with dining options that range from upscale dining to every manner of bistro, bar, and grille. And when you’re in the mood to shop, you’ll find everything from home furnishings to high-fashion clothing and sportswear to just about every kind of souvenir.

Set aside plenty of time for a couple of must-do’s before you leave: see the captivating museum at nearby Donner Memorial Park, take a deep breath of the fresh mountain air, settle into a beach at Donner Lake, and promise yourself a swift return to this Sierra paradise. From Truckee, drive south on Highway 89 past Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and home to magnificent accommodations, shopping, dining, winter skiing, summer hiking and horseback riding and year-round events.

The Rock Scene, circa 10,000 BC TRIP LENGTH

15O miles There are stories in the hinterlands etched in rock that date as far back as 10,000 BC, petroglyphs that mesmerize today’s visitors. For most, however, those stories are largely open to interpretation as the native North Americans who made their marks on these rocks left no written history. Nonetheless, it’s a riveting tour to environments that have changed little or none since the time these works of art were carved into stone. Most famous and accessible is Grimes Point and Hidden Cave, 50 miles east of Reno, near the oasis town of Fallon. You’ll also find a series of cupules (believed to be signs of fertility) at Kyburz Flat, north of Truckee. For more information go to VisitRenoTahoe.com/rockart.

Downtown Reno Walking Tour How can anyone visit Reno-Tahoe without becoming more intimate with the diversity of downtown Reno? This tour can be experienced by simply hopping aboard the Sierra Spirit bus. You’ll be chauffeured to the Nevada Museum of Art; the Riverside Artists Lofts; all the downtown hotel casinos; the Century 12 Riverside Movie Theaters, near the Truckee River Whitewater Park; north to the University of Nevada, with its historic Quad area where you will find a Gutzon Borglum sculpture of John Mackay; back south to the National Bowling Stadi-

um; the National Automobile Museum; the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts; Reno City Hall; and the Washoe County Library, among many other attractions. And don’t worry about missing your ride. Sierra Spirit’s route takes it by each stop every ten minutes. Thanks to the Regional Transportation Commission and the Reno Redevelopment Agency, Sierra Spirit is free during all hours of operation. What’s the climate for adventure?

There are 1,001 questions that come up any time you’re visiting a place for the first time. Here are a few of the more common ones.

As we see it, we’ve got a monopoly on great weather. By summer you’ve got pleasantly warm days and cool nights in the higher elevations and warmer temperatures in the valleys. Overall, the climate is dry. Precipitation varies between Reno and Tahoe, with Tahoe receiving approximately one inch per month in warmer seasons and averaging about

three feet of snowfall per month during the winter, with most from December through February. Major thoroughfares are plowed and sanded when winter conditions are anticipated; carrying chains is always a good idea. One other thing: we’ve got a freakishly wonderful profusion of sunny blue skies throughout the year.

ASK QUESTIONS NOW. HAVE FUN LATER. We figure the more you know about Reno-Tahoe, the more fun you’ll have when you get here. With that in mind, we’ve included some of our most frequently asked questions, covering everything from weather to attire to weddings. On pages 40 to 41 you’ll discover how easy it is to get from there to here. We’ve listed airlines, rental car and tour bus companies, courtesy buses, taxis, train service, and ski shuttles throughout the Reno-Tahoe area. If you have any additional questions of your own, e-mail us at info@VisitRenoTahoe.com or call 800.FOR RENO.

What should I wear? Although spring, summer, and early fall can be warm and dry, nights can get cool, so bring a light sweater or jacket. Winter days are often sunny and crisp, so you’ll want to bring a warm sweater, a coat, and some layers. We lean toward informal here, so

dress casually. During ski season, you can even dine and play in your ski clothes at most restaurants and casinos. You might want to dress it up a bit, however, when you’re out taking in a nighttime headliner or cabaret show.

If you’re disabled and have special needs, we’ve set it up so that you’re just as able as anyone else to enjoy the wonders of the area. We can help you with skiing, lodging, kayaking, tennis, biking, you name it. We’ve even broken down all of the amenities of the area— hotels, casinos, ski resorts and so on—to make your trip easier to plan. For details go to VisitRenoTahoe.com/ planyourtrip/access.
