you don’t have to go far to get Far from expected. We have this wild, crazy notion about the concept of a “getaway”—it should actually feel like, you know, you’re getting away. Far from the same old, same old…stress, crowds, traffic. Far from what your typical getaway destinations offer. Far from expected. That’s just what you’ll find in Reno Tahoe USA. After all, where else can you hit the ski slopes in the morning, the fairways in the afternoon, and the craps table at night? Where else can you hear the rumble of a big block V8 and feel the tingle of a pomegranate poinsettia martini at the same time? That’s what is so great about this place. There is something for everyone, whether you’re into hot stone massages, stand-up paddleboards, or screaming P51 Mustang planes. For starters, Reno Tahoe USA is home to some of the most incredible scenery anywhere. From crystal clear lakes to sun-dappled rivers to snow-capped mountains, you’ll experience Mother Nature’s finest work here. There are so many ways to explore the scenery, too. You can choose from 18 world-class ski and board resorts with 168 total lifts and some 40 feet of annual snowfall. If golf is your thing, there are over 50 acclaimed courses within a 90-minute drive of Reno. And let’s not forget about the roundthe-clock excitement of the resorts, big-name entertainment, year-round events, and great dining from all-you-can-eat buffets to all-you-can-imagine gourmet feasts. So, dig in and check out a real getaway…Reno Tahoe USA.
meet our official s t at e a n i m a l . And, coincidentally, your tour guide. “Yep, in the true spirit of Reno Tahoe USA, we knew you wouldn’t want just any guide—stuffy, formal and way too uptight. That’s why I’m here instead. In case you’re wondering, I’m a desert bighorn sheep, as rugged, noble and unique as they come. Kinda like the region itself.” “Be sure to look for my handsome mug throughout these pages. See, I’m filled with insider tips on all the ‘sheep’ thrills that can be found throughout the region. Trust me, I’m a local. I know what I’m talking about.”

do yourself a favor And just mark off your entire calendar. Let’s face it. Every destination claims to have special events. Here in Reno Tahoe USA, events fall more into the category of extraordinary. Take the spring and summer season, where visitors are treated to an eye-popping, taste bud-tantalizing, hair-raising event practically every week. The rest of the year brings you even more events that celebrate the snow, the sun, and pretty much everything in between. Speaking of celebrations, nobody knows how to throw a party like Reno Tahoe USA. There are parades down the streets of Reno, Sparks, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe that range from the Street Vibrations motorcycle rally to Hot August Nights, the West Coast’s largest classic car event. People also really like to compete around here. From racing camels to hot air balloons, airplanes to outhouses, paddle-wheelers to bicycles, you’re sure to find someone or something to cheer on. Plus, there’s always an appetite for food competitions here, including the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off and the more obscure Mountain Oyster Festival. So bring your camera and leave your expectations in the hotel room because Reno Tahoe USA’s next big event is your next getaway.

sheep thrills. Get to the ski slopes, dummy. Dummy Downhill “Witness pure lunacy at one of our most unusual and fun events—the Dummy Downhill. Both Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe and Diamond Peak have one annually, as live contestants build their best dummy and race it down the slopes for fabulous prizes (okay, for bragging rights). You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a dinosaur, R2D2 and giant pizza screaming downhill.”

entertainment for the rock star, thespian, high roller, virtuoso and joker in all of us. Entertainment comes in all shapes, sizes and breeds. Reno Tahoe USA knows this. That’s why, on any given week, you can find stuff to tickle your brain that ranges from comedians to crooners, from Shakespeare to show dogs, from daredevils to divas. If you love concerts, you’ll love Reno Tahoe USA. No matter when or where you’re staying, odds are there’s a great show getting ready to crank the volume up to eleven. Start with the state-of-the-art 7,000-seat Reno Events Center. Check out any of the premier showrooms that can be found in most of the major resorts. Or venture beyond the resorts to great venues like the Knitting Factory, Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch, or the Wingfield Park Amphitheatre. Catch free shows throughout the summer at Rollin’ on the River in downtown Reno or the weekly Sparks Farmers’ Market on Victorian Avenue. If you prefer to make your own entertainment, why not hit the town? Wine and martini bars, ultralounges, breweries, karaoke joints, and just plain dives are all packing ‘em in. Dance your way into The Edge nightclub inside the Peppermill Hotel Casino and make waves at The Beach, a poolside nightclub at Grand Sierra Resort. Catch live music all summer long at the Sands Regency Casino Hotel’s Rockin’ Friday Night Pool Parties. Or take part in a monthly themed pub crawl that lets you sample several bars in a single evening while dressed as your favorite zombie, superhero, vampire or Santa.

There’s plenty of unique entertainment to be found, too, like the free circus shows at Circus Circus, Reno, including JR Johns and his show dogs, not to mention the Circus Midway, home to favorites like Chicken in a Pot, skee ball, and more. Or maybe you’d prefer a more laid-back form of entertainment. In that case, warm yourself by the lakeview fire pits at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe as you sip on a Hot Buttered Rum and break out their legendary s’mores kit...Can you say “yum?” And let’s not forget about the 24-hour gaming action. After all, what’s more entertaining than raking in a Himalayan-size stack of chips? If you’re a sports betting fan, head to Peppermill Reno for their high-definition Race & Sports Book theater with over 100 screens. Maybe you’d prefer to channel your inner Sammy, Dino and Frankie at the Cal Neva Resort in Crystal Bay, a favorite haunt of the Rat Pack back in the day. Or if you really want to get your heart racing, find a seat at Zone 21 inside Harrah’s Reno for hot hands, hotter music and the hottest blackjack dealers around. Slots, video poker, keno, bingo, roulette, blackjack, craps…if you can bet on it, you can bet on it being in Reno Tahoe USA.

sheep thrills. Root, root, root for the home team. Reno Aces Baseball Club, Reno Bighorns Basketball, University of Nevada Athletics “Hey, it may be AAA baseball, but the Reno Aces Baseball Club is big league fun with an all-new stadium and great seats for a steal. Plus, it’s walking distance from downtown Reno, right in the middle of the hip-and-happenin’ Freight House District with sweet ballpark views from the comfort of your own barstool. Or if you’re visiting during hoops season, stop by the Reno Events Center to catch some NBA Development League action with the Reno Bighorns. You can even catch a University of Nevada football or basketball game to see some serious hometown talent—and serious competition, too!”

still in denial about getting your cultural fix here? Methinks thou doth protest too much. When you think of cultural meccas, Reno Tahoe USA may not be the first destination that springs to mind. Well, that’s a shame because this little corner of the Earth has experienced an arts and culture boom over the last few years. The Riverwalk Arts District in downtown Reno is home to a thriving collection of artistic communities, shops, galleries, theaters and social gatherings. You can ponder plenty at the Sierra Arts Gallery in the historic Riverside Hotel, or take a short stroll to the Nevada Museum of Art, designed by internationally renowned architect Will Bruder. Here you’ll find a rooftop sculpture garden and world-class touring exhibitions with names like Picasso, Warhol, Morrison, Raphael, Butterfield, Rembrandt, Hockney, Whistler, Starck, Parrish, Rodin, Monet, Adams, and more. Musically, the region enjoys the talents brought to the stage by the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nevada Opera, and the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Or if the play’s the thing, head up to Sand Harbor for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Encircled by the immense beauty of Tahoe’s deep blue waters and nestled in a white sand amphitheater, the Festival pairs nicely with gourmet food and nightly wine tastings. Oh, and don’t forget the coolest party on the planet—Burning Man. Once a year, over 50,000 participants gather to be part of an experimental community—Black Rock City—in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert just north of Reno for the Burning Man Project—an annual event dedicated to art and selfexpression that culminates with the “burning of the man,” a 40+-foot wood, metal and neon sculpture, on the desert playa. You have to see it to believe it. So, come on. You can admit it. Let’s say it together: “I’m going to Reno Tahoe USA to experience a lively arts and culture scene.” See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?

sheep thrills. A stroke of pure genius. Artown “One day of the art scene not enough for you? Then make the pilgrimage to Reno Tahoe in July when Artown comes to life. Here you can dip your brush into the arts scene for a whole month with a community-wide celebration of the visual and performing arts—and most of the events are free! Don’t miss festival faves like the Soul World Music Series, Movies in the Park, or the Discover the Arts Children’s Series. Can’t make it here in July? Not to worry. Artown has big name events throughout the year, too, like Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. Go on, paint the town red…or vermillion…or chartreuse.”

great outdoors? Try ginormously amazing outdoors. You know those idyllic postcards you see in the souvenir shops…the ones that are so jaw-droppingly beautiful that you think to yourself, “There’s no way that shot is real.” Guess what? It’s real, all right, and you can find it every day right here in Reno Tahoe USA. Whatever your perspective—the peak of a hiking trail, the shore of an alpine lake, or the lofty perch of a mountain gondola—you’ll find yourself smack-dab in the middle of your own private postcard. Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevada, Reno Tahoe USA is the ultimate base camp for a full spectrum of outdoor exploration, from easygoing family fun to white knuckle thrills. Lake Tahoe boasts the largest concentration of ski resorts in all of North America, plus an après-ski tradition as legendary as the slopes themselves. However you want to tackle the snow—by ski, board, snowshoe, snowmobile, sleigh or tube—Reno Tahoe USA has the perfect terrain to do it. Choose from marquee resorts like Squaw Valley USA, Northstar-at-Tahoe™ or Heavenly Mountain Resort for world-class skiing, shopping, dining and, well, everything. at local favorite Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, which features some of the steepest, double black-diamond lift-served terrain on the continent just 25 minutes from downtown. Or check out Alpine Meadows Resort’s Olympic-caliber superpipe and hundreds of man-made terrain features. If you prefer the springtime to beckon you from hibernation, Reno Tahoe USA has the perfect wake-up call, with warm weather activities that range from hot-air balloon rides at Lake Tahoe to outdoor decks overlooking the Truckee River for downing gourmet burgers, sampling locally crafted beer, and soaking up the sun. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the region offers plenty of opportunities to grab your golf clubs and take advantage of the thin mountain air for what may be the longest drives and best game of your life. With championship courses to suit every budget and a wide range of terrain—from high desert beauty to storybook forests—you’re just a chip shot away from an unforgettable day on the links. Summer here can’t be beat, thanks to hundreds of hiking trails and a virtually endless array of outdoor activities. Pack a summit picnic and climb to the top of 10,776-foot Mount Rose, which commands sweeping views of the entire region. Saddle up for a leisurely trail ride or gallop among wild mustangs in the Virginia Range. Rent a mountain bike or bring your own and take on The Flume Trail, arguably the most famous bike ride on this or any other planet. And if you’re looking for a change of scenery, autumn is the most stunning time of year to visit. Whether you’re seeking a romantic escape like a Lake Tahoe sunset dinner cruise or prefer the thrill of the catch like fishing the Truckee for browns, brookies, rainbows and cutthroat, your postcard-perfect getaway is standing by.
sheep thrills. Water you waiting for? Wild Island Family Adventure Park, Truckee River Rafting and Tubing “Beat the heat at the region’s only water park, complete with hair-raising slides, a wave pool, mini-golf, go-karts, bowling and tons more. Watch the action at the downtown Whitewater Park, home to 11 pools for kayak play and a kayak racing course. Or laze away a summer afternoon drifting down the Truckee River from its lake outflow at Tahoe City to the River Ranch Lodge. It’s some six miles of Class I and II rapids downstream…pretty mild stuff, so it’s fun and relaxing for the whole family. Bighorn sheep included.”

tons of shops. millions of finds. Hope you packed an extra suitcase. When it comes to shopping, Reno Tahoe USA has it all—fun and funky, upscale and elegant, casual and rugged. Whether you’re shopping for that ideal little black dress or that perfect duck hunting camo hat, you’ll find it here. If you’re looking to go big, there’s no better place than the 125,000-square-foot Cabela’s—the World’s Foremost Outfitter store in Verdi just west of Reno next to Boomtown Hotel & Casino. Hunters, campers, kayakers, hikers, anglers…they all become kids in a candy store here. Or, for a different kind of sporting goods experience, make your way to The Legends at Sparks Marina and step into Scheels—the World’s Largest All-Sports Store. Make-Your-Day Excursions The Most Beautiful Drive in America Mark Twain called it “the Jewel of the Sierra” and many think of it as America’s most beautiful drive. Here’s your chance to embark on a scenic journey around Lake Tahoe’s shoreline and find out why. At 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, Lake Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake. And the water is 99.99% pure and 100% breathtaking. You can begin your journey anywhere along the 72-mile loop, but you might want to start by heading up the sweeping switchbacks of the Mt. Rose Highway (431) just past Mount Rose Summit on the way to Incline Village for one of the best overlooks in the region. Go on. Bask in its beauty, but don’t linger too long because that’s only one of many “pinch me” moments. From there, follow Highway 28 around the north shore through low-key Kings Beach and Carnelian Bay. In Tahoe City, stop off at nearby Fanny Bridge, so named for the rear ends of visitors leaning over the rail to see monster trout finning below.

On the lake’s relatively unknown western shore, stop at Sugar Pine Point State Park and one of the most pristine tracts of forest. Sun-kissed treetops. Pebble-lined shores. The soft lap of Tahoe’s cool, clear water. This is what vacation is all about. As difficult as it may be to pry yourself away from such beauty, there’s still more to behold. Keep cruising to the southwest corner of the lake, and you’ll get to experience the inspirational views of iconic Emerald Bay. While you’re here, take the guided tour of Vikingsholm— a 38-room Scandinavian-inspired beachside summer mansion built in 1929. You’ll also definitely want to walk the easy quarter-mile up Eagle Creek for an eye-popping view of nearby Eagle Falls. The euphoria tour continues in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, home to all sorts of shopping, dining and gaming pleasures, as well as the aptly named Heavenly Gondola—open winter and summer—where you’ll be swept up to the 9,000-foot level to the sprawling observation deck with picnic tables, a café and one killer view. Your drive ends with a stop-off at historic Thunderbird Lodge on a secluded, rocky stretch of the eastern shore—you can even explore the lodge with a guided tour during the summer months—followed by a short few miles back to the Mount Rose Highway, at which point you can finally give Eagle Falls your camera-clicking finger a break. It will be exhausted.

Pyramid Lake is one crazy-cool place. Dissolved minerals in the water have formed the area’s fanciful rock formations, including the towering stone pyramid on the eastern shore, and give the lake a look that can only be described as “exotic.” It’s located 33 miles northeast of Sparks via Nevada Route 445 (Pyramid Way).

All of Pyramid is within the reservation of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which has been living along its shores for centuries. You can explore the tribe’s history and culture at the Pyramid Lake Museum & Visitor Center in Nixon, at the south end of the lake. Pyramid is also a classic spot for fishing and boating. And the west shore has plenty of good swimming beaches, but to get to the best one, take Highway 447 north from Nixon and watch for a signed left turn. A dirt road leads to a beach literally in the shadow of the pyramid itself. Perfect for that Zen moment you’ve been craving. For more information, contact the Visitor Center at 775-574-1088.
Ghost Trail

Ghosts in Northern Nevada aren’t just of the ghoulish campfire variety. Here, they tell stories of the past. They’re colorful characters of the Comstock era, when gold and silver were king and Virginia City was the cultural center of the Western expansion. Whether it’s Lake Tahoe’s smoky showrooms that hosted characters like Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe during the golden age of casinos or the pioneer families of rural settlements like Genoa, the apparitions that appear to some today are a reminder of our connection with days gone by. Passion in the Desert In 1927, with the rest of the country heading into the Great Depression, Northern Nevada discovered other industries to carry it through the down times—industries that forged the area’s early character and still carry traces of that past into the present day. Not always socially acceptable, but certainly lucrative, they were simple industries to develop. All the state had to do was legalize activities that were illegal everywhere else. Nevada adopted what became known as “Sin Solutions” including divorce, gambling and prostitution. These industries groomed this region to become a major entertainment hotspot, becoming the preferred hangout for Louis Prima, Jack Benny, all the Big Bands, Marilyn Monroe, and of course, The Rat Pack. Relive Reno’s heyday from the 1920s up to the 1960s. To learn more, go to visitrenotahoe.com/heritage.
Boom or Bust In 1859 what may be the greatest mineral strike in history was discovered in a mountain to the east of the Sierra Nevada. By the following year, thousands of people swarmed into the surrounding areas where filthy-rich deposits of gold and silver ore laid the foundation for the frontier metropolis of Virginia City. People far and wide came in search of fortune and livelihood here. Some prospered. Some perished. All helped shape a part of our region that is unlike any other. Take the “Boom or Bust” excursion and get transported back in time to the legendary Comstock era. To learn more, go to visitrenotahoe.com/heritage.
Engraved in Stone The ancients have left the stories of their lives for you to discover. On notepads more permanent than paper, in languages we haven’t yet learned, people of the past are speaking to us through Nevada’s rock art. The region surrounding Reno, Sparks and Lake Tahoe is an amazing time capsule carved and painted on stone. This excursion leads you to some of the most famous sites— some dating back 10,000 years. This is a self-guided driving tour with points of interest that include Kyburz Flat about 45 miles west of Reno, Toquima Cave near the town of Austin in the center of Nevada, and many more. To learn more or to view the guide online, go to visitrenotahoe.com/heritage.
Rex, Rover & Reno Dogs need a vacation, too. And Reno Tahoe USA is a pet-friendly destination that offers plenty of tail-wagging moments. A four-legged favorite is the Sparks Marina Dog Park just north of I-80 between North McCarran Boulevard and Sparks Boulevard. Here you’ll find a walking path around the marina, Scraps Dog Bakery, and a fenced, off-leash area with plenty of grass, shoreline and even a fire hydrant. Other area dog parks include Link Piazzo Dog Park, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, Virginia Lake Dog Park and Whitaker Dog Park. Man’s best friend is also welcome at several local eateries with outdoor seating, including Wild River Grille, Java Jungle and Archie’s Grill. If you’re looking for a place to stay, Circus Circus Reno, Grand Sierra Resort, Harrah’s Hotel and Casino, and Sands Regency Casino Hotel are all pet-friendly hotels. ved in Engra Larry

you’ll feel right at home. Assuming home has a casino, showroom, spa and ultralounge. Neon nirvana or lakefront lodge? Spa retreat or cozy inn? However you prefer to stay, you’ll find the right accommodations to fit your getaway. Reno Tahoe boasts dozens of resorts offering the ultimate in escape—from lavish mezzanine walkways to posh spas and sprawling gaming floors. Looking for a romantic fireside bar? No problem. Prefer an oasis-like beach party? Check. Or maybe you’re into your own private alpine village? Got it. In addition to great downtown options like Eldorado Hotel Casino, Silver Legacy Resort Casino, Circus Circus Reno and Harrah’s Reno, consider John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks for beautiful Sierra views and easy access to Victorian Square. Or the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa with its all-new Spa Atlantis, one of only eight spas in the country to offer the highly specialized Pantai® Luar treatment. Or the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, home of the world-class Stillwater Spa that includes two couples sanctuaries, one with a fireplace and the other with an infinity tub. Or the Peppermill Resort Casino with its recent $400-million (yep, that’s not a typo) expansion. If small scale is your style, Reno Tahoe USA has unique riverfront hotels and limited service inns. Don’t forget Incline Village, either, for its quaint inns and mountain retreats. Wherever you stay, you’re in for a serious treat. And we’re not just talking about that little mint on your pillow.

At least you can get here easy enough. Wheels or wings, Reno Tahoe is an easy trip from just about anywhere. Reno-Tahoe International Airport welcomes all the major carriers from around the USA each day, and many non-stops. To help you plan your trip, you can check out all airline flights serving the Reno-Tahoe International Airport by going to visitrenotahoe.com and clicking on “Getting Here” or through the keyword search “RenoTahoe International Airport.” It’s non-stop or one-stop to most anywhere. If you’re hitting the road to get here, Reno and Sparks are located at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. 395. It’s an easy and scenic drive from most of the 11 western states. I-80 provides all-weather access across Donner Summit from central and northern California. From southern California, it’s a straight shot up US 395 along the dramatic eastern front of the Sierra Nevada. From the Northwest, take I-5 south to I-80 or, in the spring and summer, opt for the scenic shortcut that leaves I-5 at Mount Shasta and follows California 89 and 44 southeast through Susanville. A third option is AMTRAK’s California Zephyr, which arrives daily from the Bay Area and Sacramento to the west and Salt Lake and Denver to the east. Trains from the Northwest, coastal southern California and the Central Valley connect to the Zephyr in Sacramento. For more specifics—including access to flights, road conditions, itineraries and other cool stuff—go to visitrenotahoe.com.
