The Wadden Sea is Denmark’s largest national park and one of only three Danish nature reserves on the UNESCO World Heritage List. No matter where you are along the 80 km of the Danish section of the Wadden Sea, you will encounter a magnificent, magical landscape that by its very existence helps us understand our dependence on nature. The Wadden Sea and its marshes form one of the world’s largest tidal areas, of vital importance for breeding birds, fish, marine mammals and plant life. One becomes immersed in the fascinating views of nature constantly changing, as the sea alternates with mudflats teeming with life. The Wadden Sea National Park was inaugurated in 2010. In 2014, the Danish part of the Wadden Sea was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List; so now, the Danish, German and Dutch areas of the Wadden Sea constitute one joint World Heritage Site. SEASON

The Fisheries and Maritime Museum, Esbjerg, is Denmark’s museum about the sea - people’s relationship with it, the culture surrounding it, and life beneath its surface. The Wadden Sea offers many delicacies, and both flora and fauna can be harvested with a bit of effort, glasswort, seagrass, shrimp, mussels and perhaps the most prestigious of them all - oysters. The large Pacific oysters that live in the Wadden Sea are found everywhere, but you have to know exactly where they are, be aware of the tides and be able to know good oysters from bad ones. We recommend taking one of the many guided tours organised throughout the season. Culinary experiences are of many kinds, but nothing beats consuming a newly-opened oyster out in the stunning landscape of the Wadden Sea.

Only a few experiences reveal the majesty of nature as does the Black Sun phenomenon (a murmuration of starlings). It is breathtaking to see the large flocks of hundreds of thousands of starlings, whether they are dancing in the evening sky or simply gathering to find a place for the night among the reeds. During the spring and autumn migration of these birds this fascinating sight may be seen in many places along the Wadden Sea, and you might well be lucky to encounter the flocks. But taking one of the many arranged tours with a nature guide is a good idea, the starlings often change resting places, and local knowledge is needed to forecast the current locations. SEASON

Nowhere can you see Denmark’s largest predator, the seals, at such close quarters as in the Wadden Sea. There are many sandbanks where the seals go to bask and breed. Today, seals are protected, and it is estimated that approximately 5,000 seals live in the Danish section of the Wadden Sea. At Koresand south of Mandø or at Langjord near Sønderho on Fanø you can get close to a seal sandbank on foot, but otherwise the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg is a good place to get to know the seals better. At the Museum’s sealarium, you can see the seals being fed twice a day, hear about their lives and watch them romp in the water.

When birdwatching in the Wadden Sea, you have the opportunity to experience some of the birds that migrate along the East Atlantic Flyway.Just the idea, that several of the birds cross between 25-33 countries, can make one humble to the greatness of nature. Bird watching often starts 2.5 hours before high tide and the birds are pressed against the coasts. The Wadden Sea is in many ways Denmark’s savannah, each species of bird is designed differently and the birds of prey, peregrine falcon and sea eagles set the agenda.

On Mandø you experience nature in all its magnificence. Even getting there teaches you that the forces of nature are to be reckoned with. The tractor bus provides a safe and fascinating ride over the marshlands. Alternatively, you can check the high tide tables and drive over in your own car along the Låningsvejen. As a guest you quickly fall into the rhythm of nature along with the island’s 30 permanent residents. Let the island calm fall over you and focus on local things, the church or Mandøhuset (museum) for example, or just follow the marked paths along the dykes with the rich bird life all around. Experience the uniqueness of the Waddensea on a trip to Mandø and Koresand. Guided walks in Mandø town with fun stories of the islanders can be arranged. We serve local cuisines for lunch with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for both larger and smaller groups. Tractorbus to Mandø 45 min (one way) - A scenic tour across the Wadden Sea with tractorbus of 45 minutes each way. Here you can experience wildlife and watch the tide rise and fall. On arrival at Mandø Inn visitors can enjoy lunch, coffee or a scenic walk before possibly joining the sealtrip. Tractorbus to Koresand - This tour to the sanddune takes 2 hours, return to Mandø Inn, including a 30 min stay half way. Koresand is a 30 m2 island of sand located in the middle of the Wadden Sea, which can be visited at low tides. The Mandøpigen tour ferry offers exclusive and unique nature experiences. The boat is a custom-built amphibious boat that can seat 12 passengers, seats and tables for everyone in the heated salon, and there is toilet on board. Oyster and Seal Safari is a trip of approx. 4 hours. We have waders, buckets and knives for everyone, so we can get off the boat at the oyster bank and pick oysters. Seal Safari is a trip of approx. 3 hours. We sail out into the wadden sea to the sand banks where we know that the seals tend to rest / sunbathe, at a suitable distance there will be good opportunity to see / film the seals. Seals are curious and will often swim very close to the boat. Island hop is a trip of approx. 2 hours, the trip always goes to or from Mandø, with Ribe Kammer Sluse or Juvre on Rømø as another port. Ribe Cathedral is the first thing that catches your eye when you enter Ribe. This is Denmark’s oldest cathedral and Ribe’s soaring landmark for 800 years, visible for miles around over the flat landscape. Begun around 1150, the church was completed about a 100 years later. The walls were built of volcanic tuff, sailed up along the Rhine and used according to the custom of the time to build a three-aisled church with two towers to the west. Later, two side aisles were added, making it Denmark’s only five-aisled church. Today it is both a parish church and the cathedral of the diocese of Ribe. The first north tower collapsed in 1283 and was replaced by the present, larger Commoners’ Tower. A tour of the tower takes you past the Cathedral Museum and provides an unforgettable view from the top over the roofs of Ribe and out over the unique marsh landscape. SEASON

The Night Watchman sings his song and tells the dramatic stories about the history of Ribe. For some, the experience is so special, that it is a standard feature to join in the atmospheric walk when visiting Ribe. During nighttime the Night Watchman was responsible for keeping peace and order, making sure that the streetlights were on, and to raise alarm in case of fire and flodding. Moreover, the Night Watchman marked the strike of the hour by singing in the streets. He sang to reassure the citizens that he was keeping watch, but also because very few people had a watch at that time. Book the Night Watchman for your indoor event. What were the origins of Ribe and how did the town’s inhabitants live when Ribe was a major European trading centre ? Ribe Viking Museum is the place to find the answers. The exhibitions of unique archaeological finds present the history of Ribe from the beginning of the 700s and on through the Viking Age and the Middle Ages to about 1700. In the years 710-850, the Viking marketplace flourished, and the museum’s Viking Age exhibition is packed with beautiful objects from the workshops of the bead maker, the bronze caster and the comb maker. The exhibition about Ribe in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance tells about daily life: play, health and sickness - about religious houses and churches and about the ongoing profitable trading in the town. Riis Museum tells the fascinating story of the Ribe boy who emigrated to America in 1870. About the man who with his hard-hitting articles and photos from the raw, tough life in New York’s slums, opened the eyes of the bourgeoisie to ”how the other half lives”. About his youthful infatuation with the beautiful Elisabeth from the richest family in Ribe, whom, thanks to his perseverance, he was eventually able take with him across the Atlantic as his bride. The story of Jacob A. Riis is the story of almost giving up the ghost in New York’s worst neighbourhoods, and how hard grind, a vision of a better society and belief in himself made the Ribe boy what the president called ”the ideal American”. The best-known Danish witch, Maren Spliids, came from Ribe - she was burned at the stake in 1641 and thus fell victim to the fears of her time. The exhibits help visitors understand the widespread spiritual beliefs that helped ordinary people understand and cope with illness, distress and loss. But visitors will also meet the scholars who maintained that the devil always had a finger in the pie. These two angles on magic merged in the contemporary perceptions of witches and wizards, who were feared at every level of society. HEX ! delves into some very specific processes and also talks about the European rulers who allowed courts to prosecute and condemn those thought to be in the service of the devil. SEASON

Enjoy the view from Esbjerg’s Water Tower - on clear days you can see all the way to both Fanø and Ribe. The water tower was built in 1896-1897 on a burial mound from the Bronze Age on top of the cliff, just above the newly constructed harbor. The Tower was quickly known as Being located on the city’s highest point towards the sea, it quickly became known as Esbjerg’s landmark. The architect behind was C.H. Clausen (1866-1941), who has clearly been inspired by a German presentation: Hans Nassau in Nuremberg, whom he has known from concurrent German architectural works.

Ribe Art Museum was established in 1891 and provides the setting for an internationally recognised collection of Danish art, including works by C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Hammershøi, P. S. Krøyer, L.A. Ring and both Anna and Michael Ancher. The collection unravels the story of art in Denmark over two hundred years. In addition to the permanent collection, Ribe Art Museum collaborates nationally and internationally to put on special exhibitions, attracting the work of recognised artists every year. The museum is housed in a magnificent mansion, quite worth a visit for its own sake, and the cafeteria offers appetizers, beer, water, wine as well as coffee and cakes. This is a vibrant and dynamic cultural centre, annually attracting about 100,000 expectant visitors from all over South and West Jutland to events of all genres and categories: concerts, theatre, opera, comedy, musicals, meetings and much more besides. The Concert Hall seats 1,125 people and the Theatre Hall 471. Esbjerg Performing Arts Centre also has excellent facilities for conferences, parties and meetings of any size. Even when there are no performances, the building itself (inaugurated 1997) is well worth a visit, designed as it was by the world-famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon, in collaboration with his son, Jan Utzon. Near the beach just north of Esbjerg’s bustling port - as if designed to be a thought-provoking contrast - stands a major work of Danish sculpture: Svend Wiig Hansen’s ”Man meets the Sea” (1994). The four figures, 9 metres tall, gaze out to sea with a serene, unassailable tranquillity that is striking even from afar. They form a group, yet are seemingly left to sit alone with their own private yearning. Locally, the sculpture is aptly called ”The Four White Men”. According to the artist himself (1922-1997), they depict the profound connection between nature and the pure, pristine human being emerging from its mother’s womb, before encountering the fascinating confusion of the world.
