RIJEKA: CARNIVAL DJ SESSION 2018 »» 3 February A new feature of this year’s Rijeka Carnival will be the student carnival parade, Carnival DJ Session that will take place on 3 February, culminating with a huge party at Ex-port Delta with its headliner DJ Kevin Saunderson. Carnival DJ Session succeeds the legendary Carnival Party that was spontaneously and somewhat accidentally started way back in 2000 on the “Millennium Bugs” float, in what was a clear nod to the Berlin Love Parade. Since then it has been a mainstay of the Rijeka Carnival and this year’s party will be headlined by a truly big name - Kevin Saunderson, a multi-platinum artist who found fame with the group Inner City. He is also the owner of the KMS record company and the promoter of the Detroit Movement Festival. He is a true innovator in the pop music pantheon, a champion of modern culture and a first-rate DJ. Besides Saunderson, local DJs Addo & Poco Locco, Peznt, Mark Ash, Fryer and Dino Jukić will also be performing.

“Musics of the world – Culture of Diversity” is an important project with which the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc, and for the first time, the Rijeka Youth Theatre Kamov, wish to mark the 15th anniversary of the widely known Educational Concerts. The aim of this project is to allow young people to expand their knowledge and develop a specific sensibility towards culture and ethnic minorities in general. The ultimate goal of the event is to promote tolerance, dialogue and to improve social inclusion of disadvantaged youth. The Educational Concerts, conducted by Maestro Igor Vlajnić, are scheduled for 7, 8, 9 and 22 February at the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc. February 2018 / 3

RIJEKA/BAKAR: MASKED PARIS-BAKAR RALLY »» 3 February The event in which the Rijeka Carnival successfully balances an athletic spirit and pure carnival madness is certainly the Masked Paris-Bakar Rally. This year, a column of “weird octanes” will once again drive their famous route from the Rijeka Paris to Bakar, and the scheduled date is 3 February. The masked “ParisBakar” Rally is a traditional event that has taken place continually since 1990, organised by the “Rijeka” Auto Club as a parody of the world famous rally “ParisDakar” and since then has been a supporting sports event of the Rijeka Carnival. Our Rijeka carnival rally is a unique event of its kind in the world, because the race is driven by masked people in cars and all the participants/competitors, their escorts and referees must be masked, their decorated vehicles being a special highlight. On 3 February, the Rally starts from the Paris of Rijeka at 10:05 am, arrives at Korzo at around 10:30 am, after which the car procession moves on to further challenges in Kostrena, followed by a final inspection and another skill test from 2 pm onwards in Bakar.

RIJEKA: CARNIVAL SNOWBOARD SESSION »» 3 February For the past ten years, the Carnival Snowboard Session has brought snow, snowboarders and an avalanche of fun to downtown Rijeka. This year is the event’s 10th anniversary and it will feature participants from the whole region and beyond. This year, the organizers of CSS have joined forces with Avalanche Risk City Jam, (a team in charge of a similar competition held in Novi Sad). As a result of this cooperation a joint trophy will be awarded to the overall winner of both of these two city competitions. 100 cubic metres of snow will be hauled in by a semi-trailer truck specially for the event. Apart from promoting snowboarding, the organizers also want Rijeka to offer its residents and visitors a chance to experience a different kind of winter. In this case it means giving the general public the opportunity to try out the snowboard piste right beside the sea. Not only will you be able to enjoy the stunts of top class snowboarders, but you can also hang out at the 3rd annual Carnival Snowboard Film Festival, a fringe event that starts at 8 pm on Friday, 2 February, at the Youth Cultural Centre Palach, where screenings of amateur snowboarding films will be held.

RIJEKA: INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL PARADE »» 11 February All parties, concerts, sports competitions and a variety of costume events at the Rijeka Carnival have been leading up to this day and to the pinnacle of carnival madness – the International Carnival Parade. It will take place on Sunday, 11 February at noon. It has rightfully been dubbed „the crown of carnival festivities” in Kvarner and the wider region. This year’s contest of imagination, wit and originality will once again end with a parade of hundreds of floats and thousands of costumed participants. It is an experience that cannot be summed up in words or captured in a few photos or by a single live broadcast. This is why attendance at Korzo is the only way to really understand what makes this event so special. If you are unable to come in person, you can watch the live broadcast of the International Carnival Parade on Kanal Ri or via live stream on Rijeka Carnival’s official website. After the last carnival group of the parade has passed by, follows the burning of Pust, which is organised by the Pom-F-Ri group. This will take place at Adamić Pier and after this the festivities will spread across the entire city. In the end, the keys to the city will be returned to the Mayor, but only for safe keeping until next year and the next Rijeka Carnival.

RIJEKA: CARNIVAL CONCERT CENTRE AT EX-PORT DELTA »» February This year Ex-port Delta will once again be the main concert centre along with Carnival Parties with Zagreb Brewery. The concert season, which began in January, resumes this month with the Carnival DJ Session headlined by DJ Kevin Saunderson on 3 February and performances by the bands Vigor and Night Express on 10 February. The season then closes with the final carnival parade on 11 February, which will start at 2 pm and last well into the night. Admission to the Carnival DJ Session and the closing parade is free, while advance tickets for the Vigor and Night Express show are available at 20 HRK at the carnival booth at Korzo or at the Dallas Music Shop, as well as at Ex-port Delta at the door on the day of the concert for 30 HRK.

KASTAV: WELCOMING THE BELL RINGERS OF HALUBJE »» 12 February The Bell Ringers of Halubje embark on their traditional homeland tour each year during carnival time. During the three-day-tour, on Shrove Sunday, Ash Monday and Mardi Gras Tuesday, the Bell Ringers visit 56 villages in the Halubje region. Each of the tour days begins in Marčelji, early in the morning, and ends late at night. The Bell Ringers band visits about 20 villages a day, stopping in each for refreshment and socializing with the hosts, thus contributing to the feeling of community and honouring the tradition. The Bell Ringers of Halubje were included on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The annual carnival bell ringers’ pageant from the Kastav area has been added to the UNESCO list with the explanation that, during the carnival period, i.e. from 17 January to Ash Wednesday in Kastavština, groups of ten men take tours of their and nearby villages on multikilometre pageants following traditional roadways. Some of them wear masks and some wear various head ornaments symbolizing vegetation and fertility.

VIŠKOVO: THE BURNING OF THE WICKERMAN »» 13 February Mardi Gras Tuesday is the final day of the carnival, and the day of the burning of the Wickerman. On Mardi Gras Tuesday, the masqueraders gather on Brege, followed by an entertainment program and the drawing of the Bell Ringer’s raffle winners.

ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology. The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events

is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» www.astronomski-centar-rijeka.hr

BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.

Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building February 2018 / 15

MUST SEE KORZO

away. Today, it is hard to believe that until the moat was filled and the city walls pulled down, in the second half of the 18th century, this was only gravel seashore with a few wooden quays and storehouses, a shipyard and the city lodge next to which cereals, fish and salt were traded.

ST. VITUS’ CATHEDRAL St. Vitus’ Cathedral is the only Baroque rotunda of monumental proportions built on Croatian soil. The

Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. As early as at the beginning of the 20 th century Korzo started to assume its modern-day outlines. The main promenade and the meeting point for Rijeka’s citizens, as well as the area for erecting the symbolic palaces representing various styles including the Classical, Historical, Secessional, Modernist… The urban regulation, taking place in the mid-19 th century, was only a prelude to a growing pace of reclamation and major public constructions which would soon ensue on the made up ground. However, already at that point the centuries old image of a littoral town straitened by its walls started to fade 16 / www.STADAnas.info

construction of this church, designed by the Jesuit architect G. Briano, began in 1638. It was made on the model of the famous Venetian church of Santa Maria della Salute. The location selected for the construction of the St. Vitus’ church was an elevated area at the heart of the then still medieval urban tissue. Initially, there was a small church of the same name, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The Jesuits, as the creators of the project, primarily decided to use the cult of the Miraculous Crucifix from the small church, which, according to popular legend, started bleeding when a certain Petar Lončarić threw a stone at it after exploding with rage over a gambling loss. The early Gothic crucifix is incorporated into the Baroque main altar of the new church, which, in the spirit of storytelling piety inherent to miraculous relics, also houses Lončarić’s stone and a small bronze hand.

CITY TOWER City Tower, a symbol of Rijeka and a good example of a typical round tower access-point, which lead into the fortified town. Today it dominates the central part of Korzo, although during its lifetime it was overtopped by more recently constructed buildings. It was built in the Middle Ages, probably on the foundations of the Late Antique littoral town gates. Some baroque phases of its construction can be seen on the lower part of

the front of the Tower, which are characterised by a richly decorated portal, an imperial coat of arms carved out of stone and a relief of the Austrian emperors Leopold and Charles VI. Rijeka paid them special respect due to the maritime orientation they introduced into the state policies of the Austrian court. The Tower’s superstructure, on which a city clock has been situated since the 17th century, has been remodelled several times; most significantly at the turn of the 18th century under the guidance of municipal engineer A. Gnamb, the last time was at the end of the 19 th century, based on a design by F. Bazarig.

IVAN KOBLER SQUARE The role nowadays occupied by Korzo, the heart of Rijeka and its busiest promenade, used to be occupied by the Ivan Kobler Square, located next to the former city hall Palac Komuna Rečkog and the City Clock Tower between two department stores that were made on the foundations of demolished old buildings. That very square, which was named after historian Giovanni Kobler, was the place where the living force of Rijeka’s

MUST SEE public life soared and where all of the business was conducted out in the open. Today, such lively images can only be seen in historical films on the Middle Ages. Every day, even on

Sundays, the women coming from places surrounding Rijeka arrived at the Green Square to bring milk, vegetables, poultry and other foods necessary to supply the citizens. Since it was also a former Municipal Loggia, it was the place where judges used to meet to pass sentences, where trading contracts were made and where the City Council held its sessions. Today, the „Old Paper Millestones” fountain (Stari kolodrob) is the centrepiece of the square. Built during the 1970s in accordance with the project made by architect Igor Emilio, it is by the factory Tvornica papira commemorating 150 years of its existence. It is a well that has become a monument. From the parts of an old factory paper millestone, kolodrob, Emili created a unique work of art to commemorate many generations of workers. Just as water flows from the amphora on Rijeka’s coat of arms, so the water pours relentlessly from this fountain, water that has been a blessing in Rijeka since the time of the ancient Roman settlement Tarsatica.

CITY MARKET – PLACA

The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.

KRALJEVICA

THE NOVA KRALJEVICA FRANKOPAN CASTLE

The castle, which is under reconstruction and expansion, tells the story of the two most important Croatian aristocratic families, Zrinski and Frankopan. A completely new residential castle on the peninsula, at the entrance to Bakar Bay is also being constructed.

ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan. The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation

ZRINSKI CASTLE Zrinski castle is a complex castle with two atriums from different times, around which the centre of Kraljevica has formed. The older castle, called ‘Little castle’ was created by reconstructing a medieval, probably Frankopan fortress with the incorporated church of St. Nicholas.

The entry is marked by a štandar (flagpole) with the carving “Kastav va Ustavnom letu 1861.” and a plate bearing the layout of Kastav.

This monumental building is the oldest and largest church in Bakar and the largest church in the Rijeka diocese. Under Saint Andrew’s parish church is a crypt with 85 tombs.

Ronjgov defined the Istrian scale - a set of six tones and semitones. This allowed him to write down the region’s folk songs and compose in the same vein..
