For the third year running, on 8 and 9 March, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral will host the International Wine and Food Festival WineRi, which has been dubbed by the media as „an ode to the Mediterranean lifestyle”. „Trs je naš” (The Grapevine is Ours) is the motto of the 3rd International Wine and Food Festival WineRi 2019, which will gather almost all the producers of indigenous grape varieties from Kvarner as a sort of en primeur for Žlahtina, Jarbola and Kastav Belica. The festival will open its doors to professionals on 8 March at 1 pm, when meetings between winemakers and catering establishment owner, hoteliers, traders and tourism workers will take place, while everyone else can visit the festival from 3 pm to 7 pm. The festival ticket costs 60 HRK, with a glass fee of 20 HRK. The numerous exhibitors, 67 to be precise, six of whom produce „rakija” (fruit brandy) and liqueurs, one makes chocolate, two brew craft beers, six produce food (cheese, olive oil and dry-cured meat), 2 make utilitarian products out of wood and recycled paper and 50 produce wine, are bound to please even the most fastidious of palates. The festival will also double as a fundraiser, with the exhibitors donating all their products, which visitors will be able to buy for a symbolic amount of 50.00 HRK, the proceeds going to the „Hoću - mogu” (I Want To - I Can) association from Pazin for using Vojta therapy with children with special needs. Eight workshops will be held during the two festival days in partnership with associations and sommeliers. This year’s main festival partner is Pink Day Zagreb, which will hold a workshop on the rosé wines of Istria and Kvarner on 8 March as part of the International Women’s Day celebration. Each festival day will be capped off with after-parties at Boatel Marina and Club Bačva on 8 and 9 March respectively.

VIŠKOVO: HALUBJE BELLRINGERS’ PROCESSION
»» 4 March
»» 3-5 March
Since 1949, Carnival Monday has always centred around an authentic old group from the eastern part of the Kastav region - the Halubje bell-ringers. Clad in white trousers and short-sleeved sailor shirts with specially stylised animal head masks, they travel from one village in the Kastav region to another accompanied by the sounds of the accordion, drums and horn, heralding spring, chasing away the winter and strengthening social cohesion among the residents of the coastal area with song and dance. Along the way, from Marčelji to Kastav, they are greeted by the locals from every village with drinks and food. The people of Kastav and a number of visitors gather at Fortica around noon, impatiently waiting for the arrival of the Halubje bell-ringers. The bell-ringers first do a wheel dance in front of Fortica and then rest beneath the Town Lodge. Every year, they are given a hot meal and there is no scarcity of drinks, either. After a short break, they continue on towards Viškovo. One of the distinctive characteristics of Carnival Monday, in addition to the parade of the Halubje bell-ringers, is the traditional egg hunt. Each carnival committee plans and determines the exact order of the visits to the surrounding villages and houses where they will be welcomed by the hosts.
The traditional three-day Halubje bell-ringers’ procession begins in Marčelji on Carnival Sunday on 3 March at 8 am, when they visit their native villages adhering to a schedule they made some time ago. The procession ends on Carnival Tuesday, on 5 March, with their participation in the burning of the effigy of the Pust. The annual procession of bell-ringers from the Kastav region is inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology. The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events

BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.
Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building March 2019 / 15
CITY GUIDE KORZO
away. Today, it is hard to believe that until the moat was filled and the city walls pulled down, in the second half of the 18th century, this was only gravel seashore with a few wooden quays and storehouses, a shipyard and the city lodge next to which cereals, fish and salt were traded.
ST. VITUS’ CATHEDRAL St. Vitus’ Cathedral is the only Baroque rotunda of monumental proportions built on Croatian soil. The
Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. As early as at the beginning of the 20 th century Korzo started to assume its modern-day outlines. The main promenade and the meeting point for Rijeka’s citizens, as well as the area for erecting the symbolic palaces representing various styles including the Classical, Historical, Secessional, Modernist… The urban regulation, taking place in the mid-19 th century, was only a prelude to a growing pace of reclamation and major public constructions which would soon ensue on the made up ground. However, already at that point the centuries old image of a littoral town straitened by its walls started to fade 16 / www.STADAnas.info
construction of this church, designed by the Jesuit architect G. Briano, began in 1638. It was made on the model of the famous Venetian church of Santa Maria della Salute. The location selected for the construction of the St. Vitus’ church was an elevated area at the heart of the then still medieval urban tissue. Initially, there was a small church of the same name, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The Jesuits, as the creators of the project, primarily decided to use the cult of the Miraculous Crucifix from the small church, which, according to popular legend, started bleeding when a certain Petar Lončarić threw a stone at it after exploding with rage over a gambling loss. The early Gothic crucifix is incorporated into the Baroque main altar of the new church, which, in the spirit of storytelling piety inherent to miraculous relics, also houses Lončarić’s stone and a small bronze hand.
CITY TOWER City Tower, a symbol of Rijeka and a good example of a typical round tower access-point, which lead into the fortified town. Today it dominates the central part of Korzo, although during its lifetime it was overtopped by more recently constructed buildings. It was built in the Middle Ages, probably on the foundations of the Late Antique littoral town gates. Some baroque phases of its construction can be seen on the lower part of
the front of the Tower, which are characterised by a richly decorated portal, an imperial coat of arms carved out of stone and a relief of the Austrian emperors Leopold and Charles VI. Rijeka paid them special respect due to the maritime orientation they introduced into the state policies of the Austrian court. The Tower’s superstructure, on which a city clock has been situated since the 17th century, has been remodelled several times; most significantly at the turn of the 18th century under the guidance of municipal engineer A. Gnamb, the last time was at the end of the 19 th century, based on a design by F. Bazarig.
IVAN KOBLER SQUARE The role nowadays occupied by Korzo, the heart of Rijeka and its busiest promenade, used to be occupied by the Ivan Kobler Square, located next to the former city hall Palac Komuna Rečkog and the City Clock Tower between two department stores that were made on the foundations of demolished old buildings. That very square, which was named after historian Giovanni Kobler, was the place where the living force of Rijeka’s
MUST SEE public life soared and where all of the business was conducted out in the open. Today, such lively images can only be seen in historical films on the Middle Ages. Every day, even on
Sundays, the women coming from places surrounding Rijeka arrived at the Green Square to bring milk, vegetables, poultry and other foods necessary to supply the citizens. Since it was also a former Municipal Loggia, it was the place where judges used to meet to pass sentences, where trading contracts were made and where the City Council held its sessions. Today, the „Old Paper Millestones” fountain (Stari kolodrob) is the centrepiece of the square. Built during the 1970s in accordance with the project made by architect Igor Emilio, it is by the factory Tvornica papira commemorating 150 years of its existence. It is a well that has become a monument. From the parts of an old factory paper millestone, kolodrob, Emili created a unique work of art to commemorate many generations of workers. Just as water flows from the amphora on Rijeka’s coat of arms, so the water pours relentlessly from this fountain, water that has been a blessing in Rijeka since the time of the ancient Roman settlement Tarsatica.
CITY MARKET – PLACA
The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.
KRALJEVICA
THE NOVA KRALJEVICA FRANKOPAN CASTLE
The castle, which is under reconstruction and expansion, tells the story of the two most important Croatian aristocratic families, Zrinski and Frankopan. A completely new residential castle on the peninsula, at the entrance to Bakar Bay is also being constructed.
ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan. The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation
ZRINSKI CASTLE Zrinski castle is a complex castle with two atriums from different times, around which the centre of Kraljevica has formed. The older castle, called ‘Little castle’ was created by reconstructing a medieval, probably Frankopan fortress with the incorporated church of St. Nicholas.

This space was used for carrying out sentences, and old documents even mention the burning of witches. The church of Saint Jelena, with its bell tower, is the most dominant building in the whole of Kastav. It was built on a hill 377 m above sea level. Today it has 3 aisles but until the 17th century it only had one. In the 18th century, it was redecorated in the Baroque style with a rich interior, boasting choir benches and pews, a baptistery and silver candlesticks dating back to the 17th century. The church also features drawings with motifs from the Ten Commandments above the pillars dividing the main and side aisles. The church is completed by a 32 m high bell tower from 1724.
