RIJEKA: TOMISLAV GOTOVAC RETROSPECTIVE »» 22 September-26 November The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka is being relocated in September and the doors of its new home will open with a big retrospective exhibition of the works of Tomislav Gotovac. The first retrospective of Tomislav Gotovac a.k.a. Antonio G. Lauer is being staged seven years after the artist’s death and provides a cross-section of his artistic oeuvre that had spanned 60 years. The retrospective meanders between various media and the artists’ different phases by combining his earlier and older work, his more obscure and more prominent artworks, and the author’s actions that extend into newspapers and documents from court trials. It does not attempt to confine the artist within the gallery walls, but instead allows him to roam freely on his well-worn paths at the boundary of the movie theatre, gallery and street. His hundred or so works unravel like a film reel from the Rikard Benčić complex to Art kino Croatia and roll through the public space.

Porto Etno is a festival that mixes the folk music and cuisine of the national minorities in Rijeka and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. You can already smell the programme, the international musical guests are slowly starting to pack their suitcases, so make a mental note of the date and location of the event, which will be held on 9 September in the courtyard of the Benčić complex. Seventeen national minorities and friendship societies from Rijeka and PrimorjeGorski Kotar County are being included in the programme in various ways: everyone will be preparing meals just like their grandmothers used to make, while a few will also make other contributions. Cooking requires inspiration, which in this case is conjured up by the sublime music provided by international bands with a taste for a blend of traditional and contemporary music. Porto Etno will feature performances by the Karandila Gypsy Brass Orchestra from Bulgaria, the Arakne Group from Italy, Vasil Hadžimanov from Serbia, Nika Solce from Slovenia and the Croatian Porto etno orkestar. In addition to music and food, there will also be a kids’ programme.

RIJEKA: THOUSAND ISLANDS RACE »» 14 -24 September For the fifth year running, the Sailing Club of Rijeka and the Porto Montenegro Yacht Club will be organising the Thousand Islands Race on the course from Rijeka to Tivat and back again. The race, which got its name for passing between more than a thousand Adriatic islands and having a course that the organisers consider to be the best boat race course nature can design, will be held from 14 to 24 September. The race has two stages, with the first one starting on Sunday, 17 September in Rijeka, after which the fleet leaves the islands of Unijae, Susak, Premuda, Dugi Otok, Kornat, Vis, Lastovo and Sveti Andrija on the right and ends in the new Porto Montenegro marina in Tivat. Along the 280 NM route, the fleet will be facing technical navigational challenges as the boats manoeuvre between the myriad islands and channels of the Croatian coast and the mesmerising Bay of Kotor, but will also be rewarded with the stunning sight of the gorgeous and world-famous scenery. After the victory ceremony for the first stage in Porto Montenegro on Wednesday, 20 September, the fleet begins the second stage on Thursday, 21 September taking the same course but in the opposite direction, and heading back to Rijeka. The race will end with a victory ceremony on Sunday, 24 September in Rijeka.

ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA
The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, open-air summer concerts and theatre performances as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. Within the Trsat Castle you’ll find the Trsat Castle Info Point
The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology.
BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.
Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» www.astronomski-centar-rijeka.hr September 2017 / 15
MUST SEE KORZO Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. Rijeka’s citizens are loyal to Korzo in both their winter coats and fluttering summer dresses. They equally visit it under umbrellas and when blown by the bora, a wind that is, just like Korzo, a specific feature of this town built along the riverbanks, oriented towards the sea for centuries. They are here to repel the autumn sorrow and to be the harbingers of spring. Inextricable are the threads connecting Rijeka’s “number 1 street” and its citizens.
Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

GAŠPAR’S MILL Grobnišćina, or more precisely Martinovo selo, is the home of Gašpar’s mill, the only mill in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County that has been working for centuries. It was built in 1650, and since then the mill wheel was only still for 10 years, between 1982 and 1992, when a renovated Gašpar’s mill opened with a huge popular celebration. Other than being a still-functioning cultural monument, the Mill is definitely the most visited site at Grobinšćina. Most visitors come during Bread Days, but it also has numerous visitors throughout the year, when it welcomes kindergarten and elementary school children. Since its restoration, many generations passed through the mill and received a crash course on milling in Grobinšćina. Gašpar’s mill is also a popular location for wedding photos.
HAHLIĆI The untouched nature of Grobničke Alpe, commonly known as Hahlići, is an inexhaustible source of hiking trails, but walking trails as well. The
CITY MARKET – PLACA
The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of
JELENJE
The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.
highest peak of the group is Obruč (1 377 m) which was included in the Ecological Network of the Republic of Croatia. Several hiking trails lead to Hahlići, there is Borovica for a pleasant trip through the woods, Pakleno for an endurance test through a rugged wooded valley, and Mudna dol - a magnificent pass cut deep into the mountain, at places only a few feet wide. The Hahlić mountain lodge (1 097 m) is located on the southern slope of Obruč, offering a view of Rijeka Bay and Učka.

Since 1985, the Rječina Canyon has been protected by law – and not without reason. This protects the rich flora and fauna, such as lush forests of oak, beech and hornbeam. From the source to the mouth of Rječina, there is a paved walking trail that can lead you to Rijeka in five hours of walking through pure serenity.
Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan.
CREKVINA

BAKAR
ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH WITH CATACOMBS Crekvina was built by Jesuits in the 17th century, at the same time as the St. Vitus’ cathedral in Rijeka. It is still not certain whether the church was completed or whether it collapsed after completion, as evidenced by local Kastav legends. Now Crekvina is a pleasant promenade and, during the summer, a stage for theatrical plays, concerts, etc.

VIEWPOINTS (ŽUDIKA, THE CHURCH OF SAINT JELENA) The term Žudika (from the Italian giudicare - to judge) refers to the space behind the Saint Jelena parish church and the tallest tower of the town walls.
