FIUMARE »» 1 - 8 June
From 1 to 8 June Fiumare, a festival of the sea and the littoral tradition with a Kvarner spirit, takes us back 100 years into the past, to the time when the Dead Channel was a venue of daily bustling commerce. By connecting the maritime and commercial traditions of the past with the everyday life of today, Fiumare will once again serve as a time machine at the authentic locations of the Dead Channel and Verdi street, while traditional boats will once again reach the very Korzo and dominate the waters and port of Rijeka. Wooden sail boats anchored in the Dead Channel, merchants and craftsmen in traditional garb from all over Kvarner, interactive workshops of maritime and fishing skills, the promotion of old customs, local foods and wines, organized tours of historic locations in the very heart of the city, traditional sail boat regattas, exhibitions, lectures, open deck and museum days.... That is only a part of the programme offered by Fiumare. The grand opening will be held on 2 June in front of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc and will feature a rich cultural and entertainment programme and a formal parade of the Bakar City Guard and the Bokelj Navy, “Bakar captains and gentlemen” and the Friends of the Town of Trsat Club.

MALIK FEST »» 4 and 5 June
On 4 and 5 June, the Trsat Castle will once again travel in time to bring you the 6th Festival of Istria and Kvarner Myths and Legends - Malik Fest 2016. The visitors to the fantasy festival Malik fest can, even if just for a short while, experience the atmosphere of a bygone and forgotten time, in which the imagination and reality overlapped and nature was interpreted through the supernatural. During the two days of the festival, from noon to 8 pm, children and adults will have the opportunity to enjoy children’s plays, performances by knights, mythical creatures, a knight camp and an old crafts fair, exhibitions of zvončari, old games, handicrafts and local food. We would especially like to emphasise a gastronomic novelty - autochthonous medieval food served in a medieval tavern, which means that visitors will be able to spend almost the entire day having fun and making friends while tucking into interesting delicacies.

This year’s Ri-gastro days are dominated by the number seven: 7 foods - 7 days - 7 Ri gastros. Cherries, one of the signs of summer, are at their best in June, just in time for the feast of St. Vitus, the patron saint of Rijeka. The cherry is a member of the rose family; during its week it will be featured on the inside and outside of various sweet (and maybe savoury) creations. It will be represented in the menus of restaurants in Rijeka and the region, but will also have an educational and entertainment purpose, especially for little foodies. Bistro patisserie Cukerin will host a children’s dessert workshop and the children’s department of the Rijeka City Library invites the little ones to come and see the „Psst... story“ programme and check out a new picture book by Velid Đekić and Ivan Mišković. ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA
The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, open-air summer concerts and theatre performances as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. Within the Trsat Castle you’ll find the Trsat Castle Info Point
The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider
BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.
region with digital technology. Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» Web: www.astronomski-centarrijeka.hr June 2016 / 28
MUST SEE KORZO Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. Rijeka’s citizens are loyal to Korzo in both their winter coats and fluttering summer dresses. They equally visit it under umbrellas and when blown by the bora, a wind that is, just like Korzo, a specific feature of this town built along the riverbanks, oriented towards the sea for centuries. They are here to repel the autumn sorrow and to be the harbingers of spring. Inextricable are the threads connecting Rijeka’s “number 1 street” and its citizens.
the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.
relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the
Grobnišćina, or more precisely Martinovo selo, is the home of Gašpar’s mill, the only mill in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County that has been working for centuries. It was built in 1650, and since then the mill wheel was only still for 10 years, between 1982 and 1992, when a renovated Gašpar’s mill opened with a huge popular celebration. Other than being a still-functioning cultural monument, the Mill is definitely the most visited site at Grobinšćina. Most visitors come during Bread Days, but it also has numerous visitors throughout the year, when it welcomes kindergarten and elementary school children. Since its restoration, many generations passed through the mill and received a crash course on milling in Grobinšćina. Gašpar’s mill is also a popular location for wedding photos.
MUST SEE KRALJEVICA
THE NOVA - KRALJEVICA FRANKOPAN CASTLE
This monumental building is the oldest and largest church in Bakar and the largest church in the Rijeka diocese. Under Saint Andrew’s parish church is a crypt with 85 tombs.
THE FRANKOPAN KAŠTEL The oldest and most attractive building in Bakar used to be the seat of the Frankopan and Zrinki aristocratic families.
BAKAR DRY-STONE WALLS
The castle, which is under reconstruction and expansion, tells the story of the two most important Croatian aristocratic families, Zrinski and Frankopan. A completely new residential castle on the peninsula, at the entrance to Bakar Bay is also being constructed.
A protected cultural monument – vineyards used for growing the Belina variety for the purpose of making the Old Bakar Water.
KASTAV
CREKVINA
ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan.
the carving “Kastav va Ustavnom letu 1861.” and a plate bearing the layout of Kastav.
VIEWPOINTS (ŽUDIKA, THE CHURCH OF SAINT JELENA) The term Žudika (from the Italian giudicare - to judge) refers to the space behind the Saint Jelena parish church and the tallest tower of the town walls. This space was used for carrying out sentences, and old documents even mention the burning of witches. The church of Saint Jelena, with its bell tower, is the most dominant building in the whole of Kastav. It was built on a hill 377 m above sea level. Today it has 3 aisles but until the 17th century it only had one. In the 18th century, it was redecorated in the Baroque style with a rich interior, boasting choir benches and pews, a baptistery and silver candlesticks dating back to the 17th century. The church also features drawings with motifs from the Ten Commandments above the pillars dividing the main and side aisles. The church is completed by a 32 m high bell tower from 1724. The church gives a breathtaking view of the entire Kvarner Bay and Učka.
TUNERE
VIŠKOVO
Tunere is a traditional, centuries-old system of tuna fishing, consisting of nets, guards, portić and a covered and closed accompanying space. They were located in coves along the City’s coast; so far only the best known, the Bakar tunere, have been restored as a protected ethnological monument.

BAKAR
ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH WITH CATACOMBS
Crekvina was built by Jesuits in the 17th century, at the same time as the St. Vitus’ cathedral in Rijeka. It is still not certain whether the church was completed or whether it collapsed after completion, as evidenced by local Kastav legends. Now Crekvina is a pleasant promenade and, during the summer, a stage for theatrical plays, concerts, etc.
