The re-enactment will take place on 2 June in the aquatorium opposite Gat Karoline Riječke, with the boats Kraljica Mora, Otac Roko and Paša, as well as the traditional sailboats of Istria and Kvarner participating in the event. RIJEKA: RI GASTRO »» 1-8 June Sardine is IN »» 8-15 June Cherry Week Early in June, Ri Gastro will immediately place the humble but magnificent sardine under the spotlight. The sardine, which is a favourite among fishermen and has been dubbed “The Queen of the Sea“, is living and swimming proof that healthy food doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. Between 1 June and 8 June, sardines will be placed at the forefront of menus in restaurants and taverns in Rijeka and its ring, during which delectable creations made from this small but valuable fish will be revealed in all their glory. The reign of sardines ends on 8 June when they will be ousted by cherries, which will take their place in the limelight during Cherry Week. Cherries are at their most succulent in mid-June, right around the Feast Day of St. Vitus, the patron of saint of Rijeka, and you can get a sweet bite at one of the designated locations until 15 June. Gourmet Story, which will take place on 1 June from 6 pm to 7:30 pm in front of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc, will once again serve as a tasty introduction for these two gastro weeks, during which caterers will have the chance to showcase some of their sardine- and cherry-themed delicacies, which will be sold for 10 HRK a piece, with all of the proceeds going to charity. Gourmet Story will be followed by a performance of Molière’s comedy The Misanthrope by the Croatian drama ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc at 7:30 pm.

The 7th annual Festival of Myths and Legends of Istria and Kvarner – Malik Fest 2017 – will be held on Saturday, 3 June and Sunday, 4 June at Trsat Castle. At this year’s Malik Fest, children and adults will once again be able to enjoy children’s plays, performances by knights, mythical creatures coming to life, knights’ encampments, old crafts and games, workshops and the offer of handicraft and local delicacies. ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA
The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, open-air summer concerts and theatre performances as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. Within the Trsat Castle you’ll find the Trsat Castle Info Point
The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology.
BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.
Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» www.astronomski-centar-rijeka.hr June 2017 / 19
MUST SEE KORZO Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. Rijeka’s citizens are loyal to Korzo in both their winter coats and fluttering summer dresses. They equally visit it under umbrellas and when blown by the bora, a wind that is, just like Korzo, a specific feature of this town built along the riverbanks, oriented towards the sea for centuries. They are here to repel the autumn sorrow and to be the harbingers of spring. Inextricable are the threads connecting Rijeka’s “number 1 street” and its citizens.
Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

GAŠPAR’S MILL Grobnišćina, or more precisely Martinovo selo, is the home of Gašpar’s mill, the only mill in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County that has been working for centuries. It was built in 1650, and since then the mill wheel was only still for 10 years, between 1982 and 1992, when a renovated Gašpar’s mill opened with a huge popular celebration. Other than being a still-functioning cultural monument, the Mill is definitely the most visited site at Grobinšćina. Most visitors come during Bread Days, but it also has numerous visitors throughout the year, when it welcomes kindergarten and elementary school children. Since its restoration, many generations passed through the mill and received a crash course on milling in Grobinšćina. Gašpar’s mill is also a popular location for wedding photos.
HAHLIĆI
CITY MARKET – PLACA
The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of
JELENJE
The untouched nature of Grobničke Alpe, commonly known as Hahlići, is an inexhaustible source of hiking The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.
trails, but walking trails as well. The highest peak of the group is Obruč (1 377 m) which was included in the Ecological Network of the Republic of Croatia. Several hiking trails lead to Hahlići, there is Borovica for a pleasant trip through the woods, Pakleno for an endurance test through a rugged wooded valley, and Mudna dol - a magnificent pass cut deep into the mountain, at places only a few feet wide. The Hahlić mountain lodge (1 097 m) is located on the southern slope of Obruč, offering a view of Rijeka Bay and Učka.
