RIJEKA: THEATRE PREMIÈRES IN MARCH
ČAVLE: AMATEURS SHOW »» 11 March
March brings several premières to the theatres of Rijeka. Ri Teatar - Kalvarija Cultural Centre is organizing its famous project once again, this year under the name “Every 4 weeks – one première”. After the first première played in February, this month on 11 March we will see the première of the comedy “Fasada” directed by Bojan Lakoš. The Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc has prepared three premières; the first is the musical comedy “Cabaret D’Annunzio”, a co-production with the Teatro dei Borgia, which will take to the stage of the Rijeka National Theatre on 17 March. The next one is the opera “The Barber of Seville” adapted and directed by the national champion of the Rijeka Opera, Giorgio Surian, on 25 March and for the very end of the month, Theatre Zajc has prepared the première of „The Bat”, a performance that has become synonymous with the operetta genre.
As it approaches its significant 100 th performance, Amateurs will show you how they used their own version of an existential crisis to make packed auditoriums laugh. As they were being led to the very edge of existence, the antiheroes of this tragicomedy, the plumber loser Krap, the frustrated coward Grga, the neighbourhood clown Kuka and the experienced prostitute, decided to take a desperate step: they decided to film a porn movie Made in Croatia, which would save them from the edge and fill their pockets with money. The hit show Amateurs, with its style of expression taken from Gogolj, laughing until you cry, very quickly became a favourite with the audience as well as the professionals, which has been affirmed with many awards, not only for the show but also the excellent cast.

ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA
The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, open-air summer concerts and theatre performances as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. Within the Trsat Castle you’ll find the Trsat Castle Info Point
The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology.
BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.
Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» www.astronomski-centar-rijeka.hr March 2017 / 15
MUST SEE KORZO Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. Rijeka’s citizens are loyal to Korzo in both their winter coats and fluttering summer dresses. They equally visit it under umbrellas and when blown by the bora, a wind that is, just like Korzo, a specific feature of this town built along the riverbanks, oriented towards the sea for centuries. They are here to repel the autumn sorrow and to be the harbingers of spring. Inextricable are the threads connecting Rijeka’s “number 1 street” and its citizens.
Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

GAŠPAR’S MILL Grobnišćina, or more precisely Martinovo selo, is the home of Gašpar’s mill, the only mill in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County that has been working for centuries. It was built in 1650, and since then the mill wheel was only still for 10 years, between 1982 and 1992, when a renovated Gašpar’s mill opened with a huge popular celebration. Other than being a still-functioning cultural monument, the Mill is definitely the most visited site at Grobinšćina. Most visitors come during Bread Days, but it also has numerous visitors throughout the year, when it welcomes kindergarten and elementary school children. Since its restoration, many generations passed through the mill and received a crash course on milling in Grobinšćina. Gašpar’s mill is also a popular location for wedding photos.
HAHLIĆI
CITY MARKET – PLACA
The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of
JELENJE
The untouched nature of Grobničke Alpe, commonly known as Hahlići, is an inexhaustible source of hiking The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.
trails, but walking trails as well. The highest peak of the group is Obruč (1 377 m) which was included in the Ecological Network of the Republic of Croatia. Several hiking trails lead to Hahlići, there is Borovica for a pleasant trip through the woods, Pakleno for an endurance test through a rugged wooded valley, and Mudna dol - a magnificent pass cut deep into the mountain, at places only a few feet wide. The Hahlić mountain lodge (1 097 m) is located on the southern slope of Obruč, offering a view of Rijeka Bay and Učka.
MUST SEE RJEČINA
ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH
KASTAV
A typical karst river with deep canyons and many rapids – the pearl of Grobnik area. It springs at the foot of the steep cliffs of Kičej hill. It is 18 kilometres long and 9-16 meters wide. Since 1985, the Rječina Canyon has been protected by law – and not without reason. This protects the rich flora and fauna, such as lush forests of oak, beech and hornbeam. From the source to the mouth of Rječina, there is a paved walking trail that can lead you to Rijeka in five hours of walking through pure serenity.
Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan.
CREKVINA
ZRINSKI CASTLE Zrinski castle is a complex castle with two atriums from different times, around which the centre of Kraljevica has formed. The older castle, called ‘Little castle’ was created by reconstructing a medieval, probably Frankopan fortress with the incorporated church of St. Nicholas.
BAKAR
ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH WITH CATACOMBS Crekvina was built by Jesuits in the 17th century, at the same time as the St. Vitus’ cathedral in Rijeka. It is still not certain whether the church was completed or whether it collapsed after completion, as evidenced by local Kastav legends. Now Crekvina is a pleasant promenade and, during the summer, a stage for theatrical plays, concerts, etc.
KRALJEVICA
THE NOVA - KRALJEVICA FRANKOPAN CASTLE
FORTICA
This monumental building is the oldest and largest church in Bakar and the largest church in the Rijeka diocese. Under Saint Andrew’s parish church is a crypt with 85 tombs.
THE FRANKOPAN CASTLE
The castle, which is under reconstruction and expansion, tells the story of the two most important Croatian aristocratic families, Zrinski and Frankopan. A completely new residential castle on the peninsula, at the entrance to Bakar Bay is also being constructed.
The oldest and most attractive building in Bakar used to be the seat of the Frankopan and Zrinki aristocratic families.
BAKAR DRY-STONE WALLS A protected cultural monument – vineyards used for growing the Belina variety for the purpose of making the Old Bakar Water.
What was once a fortress is now a promenade and a pleasant spot for taking a break in the shade of horse chestnuts and linden, with a stunning view of Kvarner and Učka. The entry is marked by a štandar (flagpole) with the carving “Kastav va Ustavnom letu 1861.” and a plate bearing the layout of Kastav.
VIEWPOINTS (ŽUDIKA, THE CHURCH OF SAINT JELENA) The term Žudika (from the Italian giudicare - to judge) refers to the space behind the Saint Jelena parish church and the tallest tower of the town walls. This space was used for carrying out sentences, and old documents even mention the burning of witches. The church of Saint Jelena, with its bell tower, is the most dominant building in the whole of Kastav. It was March 2017 / 17
MUST SEE built on a hill 377 m above sea level. Today it has 3 aisles but until the 17th century it only had one. In the 18th century, it was redecorated in the Baroque style with a rich interior, boasting choir benches and pews, a baptistery and silver candlesticks dating back to the 17th century. The church also features drawings with motifs from the Ten Commandments above the pillars dividing the main and side aisles. The church is completed by a 32 m high bell tower from 1724. The church gives a breathtaking view of the entire Kvarner Bay and Učka.

PROMENADES AND FOOTPATHS The promenades beckon you to take a pleasant walk for two in the forest, or to come with a larger crowd or with your pets - regardless of whether you want to rest, relax or enjoy the fresh air. The trail leading to Lončeva griža takes you on a pleasant walk to the village of Skvažići. After the “petroleum road” and the last houses, it turns into a steep climb into the limestone rocks of the Lončeva griža cliff. The viewpoint gives a stunning view of Kvarner, Velebit, the Grobnik hinterland, Gorski kotar and the neighbouring Slovenia; it features an educational trail with boards giving walkers and hikers information on stone masons and the former quarry. Below the viewpoint, the limestone rock houses the unique Pogled s kamika exhibition by members of the amateur artists association “Braća Baštijan”.
