RIJEKA (PARIZ) – ČAVLE – ŠKRLJEVO – KOSTRENA - BAKAR: MASKED PARISBAKAR RALLY »» 11 February The event in which the Rijeka Carnival successfully balances an athletic spirit and pure carnival madness is certainly the Masked Paris-Bakar Rally. This year, a column of “weird octanes” will once again drive their famous route from the Rijeka Paris to Bakar, and the scheduled date is 11 February. The masked “ParisBakar” Rally is a traditional event that has taken place continually since 1990, organised by the “Rijeka” Auto Club as a parody of the world famous rally “Paris-Dakar” and since then has been a supporting sports event of the Rijeka Carnival. Our Rijeka carnival rally is a unique event of its kind in the world, because the race is driven by masked people in cars and all the participants/competitors, their escorts and referees must be masked, their decorated vehicles being a special highlight. On 11 February, the Rally starts from the Paris of Rijeka at 10:05 am, arrives at Korzo at around 10:30 AM, after which the car procession moves on to further challenges in Kostrena and Bakar. Wacky speed addicts will gather in Čavle at 11:30 am and are expected to arrive in Škrljevo at 12:15 pm, after which they will test their driving skills at 1 pm in Kostrena, followed by a final inspection and another skill test from 2 pm onwards, while the awards ceremony will begin at 4 pm.

RIJEKA CARNIVAL RIJEKA: CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL PARADE »» 18 February Whoever wants to experience the future of the Rijeka Carnival should show up at Korzo on 18 February. On this Saturday, an army of the cutest masked kindergarten and elementary school children will dance through the city centre, united in a large, colourful and noisy Children’s Carnival Parade. Adults can often learn a lot from children, and this is one of those occasions because the creativity, effort and joy invested in the development and presentation of the masks in the “junior” parade is not in the least inferior to the International Carnival Parade. The Parade starts at 1 pm and face painting will also be organised at a number of checkpoints around the city centre. Carnival enthusiasts who will not be able to come to Korzo on that day can follow the Children’s Carnival Parade by watching the direct transmission on Kanal Ri or at www. rijecki-karneval.hr.

RIJEKA: THE CONCERT CARNIVAL CENTRE IN EX PORT DELTA »» from 4 February This year, Ex port Delta is once again the main centre for concerts and carnival parties organised by Zagrebačka pivovara. The concert season will be opened by the famous singer Jole on 4 February, followed by one of the biggest regional live attractions, S.A.R.S., a group from Belgrade, performing on 11 February. Jelena Rozga will warm up Ex port Delta on 18 Februaryand the last event is the huge Carnival DJ Session on 25 February with DJ Stefan Noferini and all-day carnival party with surprise guests on February 26.

RIJEKA CARNIVAL

RIJEKA: INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL PARADE »» 26 February After a month and a half of carnival entertainment, concerts, music and dance, sports, gastronomy and charity events... the 2017 Rijeka Carnival will reach its peak on 26 February with the International Carnival Parade. Rijeka’s Korzo is certainly the best place to be on that Sunday, and more than 10,000 participants in more than 100 carnival groups promises hours of fun. What the groups from Rijeka and its closer and farther surroundings from Croatia and abroad have come up with since the last carnival, what made them laugh or angry and inspired them to comment through humorous allegories... we’ll see in the big procession that starts at 12 noon and ends at around 8 pm. Following the passage of the last group, the traditionally spectacular Halubje bell-ringers, the carnival “pust” will be burned at sea, directed by the group Pom-F-Ri, after which the carnival parties will continue until late at night. Although it is something that simply has to be seen live, the parade can be followed from the comfort of your own home through direct transmission on Kanal Ri or at the Rijeka Carnival website at www.rijecki-karneval.hr.

RIJEKA CARNIVAL – A SMILING CRITIC OF SOCIAL REALITY Rijeka is, in many ways, a specific city and along with these specific features it has “that certain something” that makes it different from the rest of the world. “That certain something” is its fifth season. While everyone else’s year has four seasons, Rijeka, stealing mostly from the winter and a bit from the spring, has created its own one-of-a-kind fifth season. Carnival is its name. And in Rijeka Carnival has always been written with a capital “C” and enjoyed wholeheartedly for as long as people can remember. THE AWAKENING OF THE CARNIVAL RIJEKA To talk about Carnival’s beginnings in the city lying on the Rječina river, is to recount many centuries of history during which, regardless of whether Rijeka was in bad, good or its best shape, and regardless of whether it was a part of this or that state, it has always had its fifth season. The Carnival season! Let the yellowing pages written by the feather pens of chroniclers tell you about Rijeka’s masked past, while a tale worth telling is the story about its recent past, whose countdown started exactly thirty years ago.. Even the masked sparrows in Kvarner’s tree tops know that Rijeka’s carnival present was initiated by three masked groups – the Bell Ringers of Halubje, Pehlin’s Party People and the “No Problem” group - who strolled down the main city promenade on a winter Sunday in 1982. No matter how spontaneous their walk seemed, it was no coincidence. On the contrary, the said three carnival groups had been invited by the Tourist Board of the then Municipality of Rijeka, i.e. today’s City of Rijeka, thus giving back to Rijeka its carnival costume that had lain forgotten in the closet for decades. NOT ONLY A BRAND OF RIJEKA Rijeka’s fifth season starts on 17th January, on the Feast Day of St. Anthony, or as the local people call it - Antonja. It starts with the raising of the carnival flag which always takes place in a different part of the city. And once the flag starts to flutter, the carnival wagons drive along one by one, seemingly in no particular direction, but, in fact, following a well-marked route as well as a well-planned itinerary. The particularity of the Rijeka’s Carnival is that behind every, seemingly unplanned occurrence, there is a detailed carefully planned carnival procedure. Hours of deliberation, reaching agreements and acting. Lots of effort and sleepless nights. And what is it that makes Rijeka’s Carnival? First of all, the people through whose veins the “carnival blood” has been flowing for centuries, that is, the blood that has been passed down from generation to generation. But also a number of traditional, cultural, entertainment, sporting and similar events that, thrown into Rijeka’s carnival pot, create a unique “delicacy” of Rijeka, thus creating a brand!

ONE EVENT AFTER ANOTHER And so it goes on without stopping, one event after another, day after day, night after night. It sometimes lasts longer, sometimes shorter; it all depends on what Ash Wednesday or Easter will say. However, the finale of Rijeka’s carnival, which usually lasts for about ten days, is a real carnival hell. During this finale no one sleeps, not a wave nor a stone, none of the city’s neighbourhoods and, of course, none of its inhabitants. All the events are a prelude to Children’s Carnival Parade that passes through the city streets a week before the final one that people call the Big one or the International Parade of Rijeka’s Carnival. It’s hard to say which parade is the most impressive or the most popular, the Small one, i.e. Children’s parade, or the big final one, each precious and special in its own right. Few can resist the „colourful candies” in Children’s Carnival Parade, in which some barely know how to walk and others, along with the allegorical floats, have their own strollers pushed by their kindergarten teachers or their mums. It’s no wonder that there are tens of thousands people in the audience. THE CARNIVAL D DAY The D Day of Rijeka’s Carnival, that is, the Day of the big International Carnival Parade is the sublimation of everything that preceded during the fifth season. It is a parade of Rijeka’s distinctiveness based on the tradition that lives on even today cleverly contemplating its carnival future. Each stitch of the beautiful costumes, because Rijeka’s Carnival is first and foremost beautiful and luxurious, each screw of its allegorical floats, each city and suburban carnival group reflects the distinctiveness of Rijeka– the dearest and the most beautiful city to us, and extremely interesting to the rest of the world. And what else to say except invite you to come to Rijeka’s jubilar fifth season and greet with Rijeka’s carnival greeting whose four words contain the whole truth of Rijeka’s Carnival - RATHER DIE, THAN SURRENDER! ASTRONOMICAL CENTRE RIJEKA

The Trsat Castle represents a strategically embossed lookout on a hill 138 meters above sea level dominating Rijeka. It was mentioned as a parochial centre for the first time in 1288. At this same site there was a Liburnian observation post from prehistoric times, used for monitoring the roads leading from the hinterland to the coast. This location served well to the Romans to establish their defence system, the so-called Liburnian limes, whose starting point was the Tarsatica fortress town – which was situated at the site of today’s Old City of Rijeka. The plateau of the Trsat Castle offers a magnificent view of the ruins of these limes situated on opposite hills, Katarina and Kalvarija, as well as of the whole area of the Rijeka’s Old City. The Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast which preserves the features of the early medieval town construction. Today the Trsat Castle has been enriched by new facilities and events – visual arts gallery, open-air summer concerts and theatre performances as well as fashion shows and literary evenings. Within the Trsat Castle you’ll find the Trsat Castle Info Point

The Astronomical Centre Rijeka is the only facility of its kind in Croatia. It was opened in 2009 above the city, in the former fortress which dates back to the Second World War. In 2001 a telescope protected by a mobile dome was installed in one of the four fortress towers. Today it is the first astronomy centre in Croatia that includes both an observatory and a planetarium. It is also the only planetarium in Croatia and the wider region with digital technology.

BREAKWATER – MOLO LONGO The current Breakwater in the main port basin is known as “molo longo” due to its 1707 m length. It is used as a passenger terminal and promenade. The construction plans and preparations for the Breakwater began in 1872 and it was completed in 1888. It was named Molo Maria Teresa after the Empress for her historic influence on the development of the city. It was planned to be an administrative centre for Hungary by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal. The construction work was performed by, among others, a Parisian railway construction company. In the 20 th century, the Breakwater was enlarged, a pier used to close the Breakwater was erected in 1908, and the final enlargement to the Breakwater was constructed in 1934. During WWII, a range of diversions were conducted in the Port of Rijeka area. The greatest amount of damage was caused by the German forces in their retreat on May 1945. The grand restoration of the port basin was conducted immediately after the war ended and lasted until 1961. Special pride was placed in the restoration of the Breakwater cranes. They were a technologically revolutionary accomplishment and could thus elevate the Port’s status to a higher level.

Its programme takes place within a spherical dome which can host up to 52 visitors. Here you can enjoy films and presentations dedicated to the immensity of the universe. The planetarium is part of the International Planetarium Society. The centre includes lecture halls and workshop areas, a bar and a terrace with a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay. It is reachable by city bus, which is very rare when such facilities are concerned. The building is completely adapted for disabled persons. »» Address: Sveti križ 33 »» www.astronomski-centar-rijeka.hr February 2017 / 27

MUST SEE KORZO Rijeka is reflected in Korzo, at Korzo you can read Rijeka. Anyone who, at least once, had a coffee at one of the terraces of numerous and picturesque café bars lined along this unusual promenade, would agree. Anyone who was at least once sitting on one of the benches placed at Korzo, precisely for this purpose, as well as-those who were looking at the most picturesque city’s street from the “top” of some of the most popular meeting places of Rijeka’s citizens, located at the top floors of buildings. Rijeka’s citizens are loyal to Korzo in both their winter coats and fluttering summer dresses. They equally visit it under umbrellas and when blown by the bora, a wind that is, just like Korzo, a specific feature of this town built along the riverbanks, oriented towards the sea for centuries. They are here to repel the autumn sorrow and to be the harbingers of spring. Inextricable are the threads connecting Rijeka’s “number 1 street” and its citizens.

Rijeka’s Office for Architecture, the construction of two pavilions began in 1880, next to the fish market. That was how other vendors found themselves with a roof over their heads. All of the buildings were constructed on the sea area created by filling. The architect used the top solutions of his time by utilising steel grid-like construction and glass. He remained faithful to the previous, historical experiences in other construction elements by decorating the façades with reliefs depicting fruit and vegetables.

GAŠPAR’S MILL Grobnišćina, or more precisely Martinovo selo, is the home of Gašpar’s mill, the only mill in the Primorje-Gorski kotar County that has been working for centuries. It was built in 1650, and since then the mill wheel was only still for 10 years, between 1982 and 1992, when a renovated Gašpar’s mill opened with a huge popular celebration. Other than being a still-functioning cultural monument, the Mill is definitely the most visited site at Grobinšćina. Most visitors come during Bread Days, but it also has numerous visitors throughout the year, when it welcomes kindergarten and elementary school children. Since its restoration, many generations passed through the mill and received a crash course on milling in Grobinšćina. Gašpar’s mill is also a popular location for wedding photos.

HAHLIĆI

CITY MARKET – PLACA

The main City Market has been the place chosen by the people of Rijeka as the best place to dine since the 19 th century. It developed next to the sea shore, near the wooden pier, where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and take it in baskets to the market to sell. Fish, crabs and seashells were first sold in the open, but in 1866 a fish market was erected. In line with the project by Izidor Vauchnig, the director of

The untouched nature of Grobničke Alpe, commonly known as Hahlići, is an inexhaustible source of hiking The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage centre of Western Croatia. Its foundation is reported to be, according to tradition, related to the miraculous transport of the Nazareth Barn, and its stay on Trsat (1291 – 1294). Shortly after the relocation of the Mother of God’s house to Loreto, Prince Nikola I of Krk built the first small church on the place where the barn stood on Trsat. Marija`s Trsat became a pilgrimage point of convergence, the reputation of which was strengthened by the astounding painting of the Lady of Trsat, which was a gift given to the inconsolable Croats in 1367 by Pope Urban V for the loss of the Holy Barn. In the XV century, the Sanctuary was taken over by Franciscans, who have remained its guardians to the present day. On 8 June 2003, Pope John Paul II attended a long pilgrimage procession.

trails, but walking trails as well. The highest peak of the group is Obruč (1 377 m) which was included in the Ecological Network of the Republic of Croatia. Several hiking trails lead to Hahlići, there is Borovica for a pleasant trip through the woods, Pakleno for an endurance test through a rugged wooded valley, and Mudna dol - a magnificent pass cut deep into the mountain, at places only a few feet wide. The Hahlić mountain lodge (1 097 m) is located on the southern slope of Obruč, offering a view of Rijeka Bay and Učka.

MUST SEE RJEČINA

ST. NICHOLAS’ CHURCH

KASTAV

A typical karst river with deep canyons and many rapids – the pearl of Grobnik area. It springs at the foot of the steep cliffs of Kičej hill. It is 18 kilometres long and 9-16 meters wide. Since 1985, the Rječina Canyon has been protected by law – and not without reason. This protects the rich flora and fauna, such as lush forests of oak, beech and hornbeam. From the source to the mouth of Rječina, there is a paved walking trail that can lead you to Rijeka in five hours of walking through pure serenity.

Judging by the preserved stone, the first church of the chapel of Saint Nicholas was built by the existing fortress as early as 1471 during the governance of Martin Frankopan.

CREKVINA

ZRINSKI CASTLE Zrinski castle is a complex castle with two atriums from different times, around which the centre of Kraljevica has formed. The older castle, called ‘Little castle’ was created by reconstructing a medieval, probably Frankopan fortress with the incorporated church of St. Nicholas.

BAKAR

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH WITH CATACOMBS Crekvina was built by Jesuits in the 17th century, at the same time as the St. Vitus’ cathedral in Rijeka. It is still not certain whether the church was completed or whether it collapsed after completion, as evidenced by local Kastav legends. Now Crekvina is a pleasant promenade and, during the summer, a stage for theatrical plays, concerts, etc.
