welcome to falls park!

Free parking throughout the park! Falls Park Visitor Information Center 605-367-7430 The Falls of the Big Sioux River have been a focus of life in the region throughout history. Native Americans were the first to visit the Falls and bring stories of them to European explorers. The Falls have been the center of recreation and industry since the founding of the city of Sioux Falls in 1856. At Falls Park, located at 900 N. Phillips Ave., visitors can see the city’s namesake, as well as some of the first buildings built in Sioux Falls. Today the park covers 123 acres. An average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second. NOTE: Buses and campers traveling to Falls Park via Phillips Avenue, please be advised of a 12-ft. train trussel before entering the park.

If you’d like additional information about Sioux Falls, contact the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau at 605-275-6060 or log on to VisitSiouxFalls.com.

Falls Overlook Cafe

Enjoy dining with a view! Falls Overlook Cafe is located in Falls Park in the old Sioux Falls Light and Power Company hydroelectric plant, which was completed in 1908 and housed three 500-kilowatt generators. See page 53 for more details.

Winter Wonderland at Falls Park

From mid-November to mid-January each year, Falls Park becomes a spectacular “Winter Wonderland” with breathtaking lights throughout the entire park. Don’t miss this enchanting winter attraction! See ad page 16.

Falls Park Open Air Shelter

The Falls Park Open Air Shelter is home to the Falls Park Farmer’s Market and is available for large picnics, special events and more. The Shelter is 200’ long by 42’ wide with a 30’ wide concrete walk. Electrical service is provided to each column and water service is available at both ends. An accessible restroom and playground are adjacent to the shelter.

Biking & Hiking Trails

The bike trail in Falls Park connects to over 26 miles of Big Sioux River Recreation Trail and Greenway as it follows the Big Sioux River and loops around the city. The existing trail system provides access to scenic areas along the river and provides recreational opportunities for many parts of the city.

Horse Barn

Built in the late 1800s as a horse barn, perhaps to house horses that must have worked any of the eleven stone quarries in existence at that time. Possibly it was part of a local creamery. No records exist to tell us, but the building is charming, none-the-less.

Phillips to the Falls

Downtown and Falls Park are joined by “Phillips to the Falls”, a walking/driving route down Phillips Avenue from 5th Street to Falls Park. Explore the park, then find your way to great shopping, dining, historical sites and the fascinating “SculptureWalk”.

Queen Bee Mill American Farmer Sculpture

American Farmer was created by Sondra Jonson of Cambridge, NE. This bronze sculpture won Best of Show in SculptureWalk 2004. American Farmer focuses on the patriarch of a rural home. Jonson says she wanted to capture a man of strength and determination who is resolute and pragmatic.

Visitor Information Center

The Visitor Information Center offers guidance to those visiting the city, as well as a five-story viewing tower for breathtaking views of the park and the city. Your HOT SPOT for Sioux Falls memorabilia. See page 6 for hours.

The Queen Bee Mill ground its first flour on October 25, 1881. At the time of its construction, the seven-story mill was one of the most advanced in America. The mill burned in 1956, destroying the wooden roof and interior walls. It was constructed of Sioux Quartzite quarried on site. Home to Sounds at the Falls and more—see Calendar of Events.

Millrace & Dam

Originally constructed to provide power for the Queen Bee Mill in the 1880s, the dam was raised in 1908 to supply power to the hydroelectric plant. Today the millrace is a viewing platform.

gardens and parks

Bike a trail, take a swim, bring a picnic, hear a concert—Sioux Falls boasts over 80 beautiful parks, only a few of which are listed here. A complete listing of parks can be found at www.siouxfalls.org/parks. Contact the Convention and Visitors Bureau at 605-2756060 or the Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation Department at 605-367-8222 for more information. Enjoy!

Arrowhead Park • east of F-10

1600 S. Riverbluff Rd. (Two miles east of Sioux Falls on Hwy. 42, with entrance off 26th St.) The park is named after a large arrowhead shaped granite quarry which is one of three historic quarries that are now lakes. The area is now a bird sanctuary—a haven for bird watching. Stones from these quarries were used to build several buildings in downtown Sioux Falls including the Old Courthouse Museum. The City’s Parks Department has planted native prairie grass and developed a network of hiking trails on the land, which was donated by Dale and Dorthy Weir. Be sure to see the restored 1888 barn, which some claim was designed by famous architect Wallace Dow.

The Big Sioux River Recreation Trail & Greenway

The over 26 mile trail begins at Falls Park and loops around the city. Walk, jog, bike or rollerblade your way along the Big Sioux River as it flows through Sioux Falls. The River Greenway offers a paved bike trail that winds through scenic urban and wildlife areas. The trails are maintained in the winter as well, so enjoy a nice crisp winter walk for year-round outdoor enjoyment.

September 2013 brought the completion of Phase II of the Greenway with the installation of an interactive water feature marked by unique spray nozzles shooting streams of water from rock to rock. The pedestrian bridge linking the River Greenway to the Downtown district was also refurbished. Not surprisingly, the River Greenway has quickly become a hot spot for events and entertainment. Be sure to check out the events schedule at www.SiouxFalls.org/Parks-Calendar!

Falls Park • E-6 900 N. Phillips Ave. See pg. 4 Enjoy magnificent rock formations washed by water of the Big Sioux River. Viewing areas, walkways and picnic areas allow sightseers to enjoy the area’s scenic beauty and to survey some of the city’s earliest buildings built at Falls Park. These include the foundation of an 1887 mill, a replica of its turbine house and Sioux Falls’ original hydroelectric plant built in 1908. The plant has been renovated and re-opened as the Falls Overlook Café. Plan to visit the Falls Park Visitor Information Center with a fivestory observation tower, Horse Barn and Monarch of the Plains buffalo statue. You will find the park

transformed into a Winter Wonderland as the entire park is adorned in holiday lights from mid-November through mid-January.

Great Bear Recreation Park • C-9 5901 E. Rice St. (I-229 Exit 7, 3 miles east) 605-367-4309 www.greatbearpark.com Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowshoeing. 14 downhill trails, one quad chair lift, one handle tow, conveyor lift for beginner area, terrain park with 350 ft. fun pipe and 6k of groomed cross-country ski trails, tubing park and lift. Hiking opportunities in summer include 6k trail system with varying degrees of difficulty. Full food service concessions.

The Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum and East Sioux Falls Historic Site • east of F-10

1900 S. Perry Pl. (2 miles east of Sioux Falls on Hwy. 42 with entrance North off Hwy. 42.) The site will eventually provide recreation—including an extension of the Sioux Falls Bike Trail System—and education of earlier culture’s interaction with the environment.
