SPOKANE IS A COOL CITY.
It’s one of the last bastions of America that hasn’t lost its historic charm to the cold steel of tech highrises and overdevelopment. It’s a mid-sized city with character, good food, craft beer, wineries, a thriving arts and music scene, beautiful hotels, boutique shopping, outdoor adventures, and pedestrian-friendly walkways. The outdoor spaces aren’t overcrowded, things are accessible, and you’ll find friendly faces greeting you as you walk downtown. Like any aging pop star, Spokane has reinvented itself over the decades–always building on its existing foundation. Sometimes in a Paul McCartney way, maybe in a Taylor Swift way, and sometimes in a Keith Richards way, but we promise it’s always entertaining.
WELCOME.

The iconic neon lights of The Garland Theater beckon and serve as the anchor to the quirky Garland District. When you walk down the main drag, you’ll understand why many major films–Benny & Joon, VisionQuest, and Why Would I Lie?--made the area their backdrops. Coeur d'Alene,
LIBERTY LAKE
ONCE THE SUMMER PLAYGROUND FOR OLD SPOKANE, THE LAKE REMAINS A TOP ATTRACTION. MODERN LIBERTY LAKE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE LAKE– IT IS ALSO GOLF, HIKING, FOOD, AND WINE. THE CITY IS ALSO HOME TO MANY TECH COMPANIES, MAKING IT A HOT SPOT FOR INVESTMENT AND GROWTH.
PLAY
Liberty Lake has no shortage of things to do. Hiking trails offer challenges, the lake is a place to cool off in summer or ice skate in winter, and the HUB Sports Center is a sanctuary if you want to play pickleball, badminton, or basketball. Fern Plant Shop and Collected Goods will make you want to spend your green.
Plan a camping trip and stay at Liberty Lake Regional Park. Trek up the Liberty Lake Loop Trail, breathe in the scents from the ancient cedar grove, and peek at the waterfall. Book a guided trip with Mica Moon Zip Tours & Aerial Park. Or spend a casual summer afternoon tearing up Liberty Lake or MeadowWood Golf Course greens. Take the kids to play at Pavillion Park, then swim at the public beach at Liberty Lake Regional Park. The seasonal Liberty Lake Farmers’ Market is excellent for fresh fruits, veggies, and locally made goods.
EAT & DRINK
Like its population, Liberty Lake is small but has everything you need. Start your day with breakfast, coffee, or boba tea at Bocopop or New Love Coffee. Fresh juice at Liberty Lake Juice is always a healthy choice. For lunch, try Versalia or Palenque Mexican. Palenque has golf course views and fantastic margaritas.
We recommend Barlows, Hay J’s Bistro, Fujiyama, or Piccolo Artisan Pizza Kitchen for dinner. Hold court at the Pentagon; it’ll take days for the garlic breath to fade. Sweet Annie’s Artisan Creamery is a dessert favorite.
Go to Trailbreaker Cider, a family-friendly establishment that also offers food. They press the locally grown apples on site. Hop over to craft brewery Snow Eater. For a truly delightful wine experience, go to Liberty Lake Wine Cellars.

New Love Coffee

COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO
Make a run for the border (no, not Taco Bell) and spend an afternoon in the lovely resort town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The former lumber and mining town is a very easy 30-mile commute east of Spokane. It is a must-stop, must-see resort town with something for everyone year-round.
PLAY
Watersports are the name of the game in this true resort town. The city sits on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, which is massive and sports a public beach and dock. Summer months make for a packed downtown filled with people dressed in swimsuits and carrying paddleboards. We highly recommend staying at least one night at the spectacular Coeur d’Alene Resort. Golf the course with the world’s only existing floating green. Hike Tubbs Hill and jump off the rocks into the water below–a favorite activity with the locals–or bike the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. You may just see a moose. Zipline with Timberline Adventures
Take a scenic water tour with Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises. The cruises run year-round, and the holiday-themed “Journey to the North Pole” cruises are very popular in winter.
Wander through The Shops. Make sure you walk up and down Sherman Avenue, the main drag in downtown Coeur d’Alene. The street has locally owned boutiques and art galleries. The kids will adore Figpickels Toy Emporium
The Museum of North Idaho is always educational.
EAT & DRINK
Start your day at Anchored Coffee Shop or try Coeur d’Alene Coffee Company. Pull into The Dockside inside the Coeur d’Alene Resort for more typical breakfast fare.
For lunch, you must go to the iconic Hudson’s Hamburgers. The same family has owned the restaurant for five generations. Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese is another popular spot with the locals. Crafted is always lovely. Honey Eatery has some of the best fried chicken you’ll ever try.
For dinner, we recommend Moon Time. Try the corn pasta salad. Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery is a perfect stop. Cedars Floating Restaurant offers lake views and a daily fish special. But if fancy is the name of the game, go to Beverly’s. You’ll impress your friends and family.
In true Northwest fashion, wineries and craft breweries are plentiful. For wine, try Coeur d’Alene Cellars or Rivaura Estate Vineyards & Winery. Trickster Brewing, Daft Badger, and Mad Bomber for craft beer.
22
Coeur d'Alene Moose Statue, Libby Kamrowski
Coeur d'Alene Lake, Libby Kamrowski
The city of Millwood is quaint. A historic main drag and adorable side streets hug the Spokane River as it meanders quietly to the roaring Spokane Falls in downtown Spokane. Millwood is an old mill town with a still functioning paper mill across from the historic business district.
PLAY
The first thing you notice in Millwood is its proximity to the Spokane River. Floating the river and hiking along the Centennial Trail are popular activities. The Millwood Farmers’ Market is always fun in summer and nods to nearby Spokane Valley’s agricultural history. Rock climbing reigns supreme at Minnehaha.
EAT & DRINK
Drop into The Rocket Bakery for an espresso and pastry. Diners would do well at Joe’s House. Stick with burgers from Hangry’s, and the owners promise you’ll leave happy. A fixture since 1941, Old Mill Bar & Grill is also an option if you want to blend in with the “millbillies” as the locals call themselves. Whistlepunk East is an oasis of craft brewing. The gorgeous Arbor Crest Wine Cellars is on a hilltop over the Millwood district. A trip to the winery’s historic Cliff House is necessary. A glass of wine is encouraged. The winery hosts outdoor concerts during the summer.
23 MILLWOOD
The Corner Door Cafe, Millwood, NIck James Spokane River in Millwood, Nick James
SPOKANE VALLEY
The City of Spokane Valley is a family-friendly community directly east of Spokane. It offers all the fun, shopping, and outdoor activity you can imagine.
PLAY
Outdoor activities are the prime entertainment option in Spokane Valley. With access to the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River, the Dishman Hills Natural Area, and Antoine Peak, walkers, bikers, and hikers will fall in love. We recommend hiking the Rocks of Sharon for stunning views of the Palouse. 55 acres at Mirabeau Point Park is a stroll made in heaven, and the kids will love Discovery Playground.
Shop at Spokane Valley Mall, home to H&M, Old Navy, and Nordstrom Rack stores. For sports fans, summer brings Spokane Indians Baseball games.
Spokane Valley also has annual events like Crave! and Spokane Valleyfest.
EAT & DRINK
Sticky buns at the Skyway Cafe at historic Felts Field are a good start to the day. Watch the planes take off and land. Cottage Cafe is also a popular breakfast spot. Spokane Valley is a barbecue hotspot. Roll
into Outlaw BBQ, Smokeridge BBQ, or TT’s Old Iron Brewery & BBQ for lunch. Dinner options include Craft & Gather, Ambrosia Bistro & Wine Bar, Twigs Bistro, or Max at Mirabeau
The craft beer scene is quickly becoming big in Spokane Valley. Try YaYa Brewing, Badass Backyard Brewing, No Drought Brewing, Bardic Brewing and Cider. For those who love wine, try Latah Creek Wine Cellars, one of the oldest wineries in Washington.
Craft cocktails are at The Boneyard, The Rock Bar & Grill, or iolite Lounge. Stop at Beard Papa’s for dessert, where cream puffs reign supreme.
WEST PLAI
SNThe West Plains comprises three distinct areas, and all are worth checking out. The charming college town of Cheney, the bustling business hub of Airway Heights, and the more rural area known as Medical Lake are a quick drive from Spokane.
PLAY
Northern Quest Resort and Casino is a mini-Las Vegas filled with concerts, dining, drinks, a cigar bar, and shopping. If you go, get a
cocktail at Highball. Drop the kids off at Kids Quest, a supervised space where kiddos can play. Cyber Quest has arcade games for all ages.
You’ll also do well to stop at The Spokane Tribe Casino. The ever-expanding location in Airway Heights has several restaurants, a casino with a hotel, and an event space that frequently hosts live music and comedians.
Family and crafting are the inspirations behind Ree Creations, a Cheney shop named for the owner’s grandmother. In the summer months, go jump in Fish Lake in Cheney. If you visit in the fall, a football game at Cheney’s Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field is perfect.
Go to Turnbull Wildlife National Refuge in Cheney for bird watching, hiking, and running.
EAT & DRINK
For coffee, try West Plains Coffee Roasters in Cheney. For breakfast, go to Benes. As the name would suggest, it serves up inventive variations on the beloved eggs benedict. Barrelhouse Pub & Pizza in Cheney is perfect for lunch. Lefevre Street Bakery is a sweet spot in Medical Lake for breakfast and lunch.
The Rusty Moose in Airway Heights serves up healthy portions for casual dining.
For meat lovers, try Longhorn Barbecue or Masselow’s Steakhouse at Northern Quest Resort and Casino in Airway Heights. If it’s Asian food you seek, go to East Pan Asian inside Northern Quest.

Expo' 74 in Riverfront Park, Public Archives
IN 1974, SPOKANE BECAME THE SMALLEST CITY IN HISTORY TO HOST A WORLD’S FAIR. As an environmentally focused event, the Spokane World’s Fair sparked a transformation in the heart of our city that became the catalyst for sustainable growth in our region. In short, it turned into a righteous party!
In 2024, from May to July to be exact, visitors during that time will enjoy a two-month-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Expo. The celebration aims to reignite the nostalgia of this international milestone in Spokane’s history and invite new generations to carry the mantle of creating a cleaner and brighter tomorrow.
FLIP THE PAGES QUICKLY TO SEE THE EXPO THEN AND NOW.
RIVERFRONT PARK
Fifty years ago, Riverfront Park didn’t exist. The area was a polluted eyesore caused by decades of railyard waste. Pioneering civic leaders used the Expo as an excuse to turn it into the gem you see today.
We invite you to reap the dividends of the risks taken by those visionaries and play in the park.
ICE AGE FLOODS PLAYGROUND
Let your children play and learn about the events that shaped the region’s geography! The Ice Age Floods Playground features a splash pad, a skateboard park, a three-story slide, and basketball courts.
GARBAGE-EATING GOAT
This iconic metal sculpture, created by Sister Paula Turnbull, has a vacuum that sucks up your trash.
GREAT NORTHERN CLOCK TOWER
A remnant of the Great Northern rail depot, the tower is a silent sentinel tracking the time. It takes a technician 99 cranks to keep the clock going for one week.
LOOFF CARROUSEL
The carousel was hand-carved by Charles Looff in 1909 as a gift for Looff’s daughter and her husband.
NUMERICA SKATE RIBBON
It’s ice skating in the winter, but in the summer months, you can roller skate.
NUMERICA SKYRIDE
The lilac gondolas, the World’s Fair relics, take riders over the lower Falls. The cars are ADA-accessible and hold six passengers.
PROVIDENCE PLAYSCAPE
The city’s first all-inclusive playground, Providence Playscape, allows free movement for children with assisted devices.

ADVENTURES
If you’re the type who loves a little fear and excitement with your vacation, we have some ideas.
SOAR
Mica Moon Zip Tours & Aerial Park (micamoon.com) is a must. The tour, which involves nine zip lines, two hikes, and one 3500’ zip, is about five hours, so plan to make a day of it. Make time to monkey around on the ropes at the aerial park. Or head to Idaho and take a zip tour with Timberline Adventures. (ziptimberline.com)
PADDLE
Rent kayaks or paddleboards from Fun Unlimited, Inc. at their Post Falls, Idaho location. (cdasports.com)
Take a guided whitewater rafting trip on the Spokane River with Wiley E. Waters (riverrafting.net) or ROW Adventure (rowadventurecenter.com), which offers guided St. Joe and Clark Fork Rivers trips.
CLIMB
Get your rocks off climbing at Deep Creek in Riverside State Park (parks. wa.gov/573/Riverside). Rock climbers will also do well at Minnehaha or Rocks of Sharon in Spokane Valley.
RIDE
For one of the best bike rides of your life, head east to the Route of the Hiawatha. (ridethehiawatha.com) The scenic trail rolls along 15 miles of the old Milwaukee Rail Line. Bring your headlamp; the trail goes through 10 dark rail tunnels. The best part is that it’s mostly downhill, with the option of a shuttle to bring you back up to the parking lot.

SPOKANE
Spokane’s golf scene is underappreciated and unbelievably robust. When the average round of golf costs $35, you can’t go wrong. Golf enthusiasts would do well planning an entire vacation around golf in the region. In addition to lovely public courses, you’ll find stunning private courses, too.

HOW SPOKANE WON OVER THIS TRAVEL WRITER
SPOKANE IS THE RIGHT-SIZED CITY WITH INEXHAUSTIBLE VACATION OPPORTUNITIES
By Brandon Withrow
Perched on the rocky basalt ledges along Rimrock View Trail, I stopped for a stunning panorama of the city of Spokane. It rested comfortably in the valley below, framed by Douglas-firs, ponderosa pines in the foreground, and a backdrop of mountain slopes behind it. This unassuming presence, though, belies its lively energy.
This was not my first time visiting Spokane as a travel writer, and it wouldn’t be my last. My first trip
was just a short few days. I knew little to nothing about this right-sized Washington city that wasn’t Seattle. It’s not uncommon for a travel writer to visit places they know nothing about—that’s why we travel—but Spokane pleasantly surprised me.
As the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis and between Calgary and Salt Lake City, Spokane is big enough to check many of my boxes when it comes to recommending a city. For one, it has an international airport, so it is accessible from almost anywhere. Check. You can also get almost anywhere around the city within 20-30 minutes. Check. It has trails,
Monroe Street Bridge, Ben Matthews 48
mountains, and beautiful parks. Check. It has a vibrant food scene and a nightlife with enough cocktail bars for evening escapes. One very-big check.
If you love the outdoors, Spokane has plenty of places to play.
Parks, gardens, and trails surround the city for every level of activity. You can get a casual morning walk in at the five peaceful gardens of Manito Park or soak in a sunset hike at High Drive Bluff. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of the Spokane River and the falls from the accessible greenspace of Centennial Trail along Riverfront Park, where outdoor events are held. Riverfront Park is where Spokane hosted Expo ’74, the first environmentally themed world’s fair. Kids can also enjoy riding the historic Looff Carrousel at the park or the Numerica SkyRide gondola over the falls. Riverfront Park also displays some of Spokane’s quirky side, with the ever-popular, trash vacuuming Garbage Goat or the giant Red Radio Flyer, which has a slide.
Thousands of acres of trails are within driving distance from the city. If you’re craving a more challenging outdoor adventure, try scaling the steep switchbacks of the Rocks of Sharon trail loop at Dishman Hills Conservation Area until you reach its arresting views from its granite outcroppings. Bring lunch because it is the perfect place to eat. Or follow trails to the spectacular peaks of Mount Spokane and Mount Kit Carson. And if you feel the need for speed, each zipline of Mica Moon’s Classic Zipline Tour builds in intensity until you reach a crescendo, soaring along a sloping mountainside at 50 miles per hour.
“Inexhaustible” is the word for Spokane’s food scene.
For breakfast, satisfy your sweet tooth at The People’s Waffle or brunch with the comfort diner menu at The Yards. For lunch, pick up a fresh and generously sized sandwich from local staple Domini’s, get craft beers and creative Neopolitan pizza at The Flying Goat, or try the revolving international menus of Feast World Kitchen, where
immigrant chefs get a chance to showcase their cultural favorites.
For dinner, visit Zona Blanca’s Mexican coastal flavors from two-time James Beard finalist and former Top Chef contestant Chad White, or taste the popular Latininspired menu of Kismet in the historic Hillyard District. For after-dinner drinks, stop in to visit Cease & Desist Book Club—a speakeasy with a secret bookcase entrance and a great selection of craft cocktails. Rumor has it that prohibition-era tunnels still exist under the city.
Spokane is many things, but for me, it is a place where outdoor adventures and great food come together, wrapped in a mid-sized city package. It’s also beginning to feel like home. I come from a mid-sized city, so I tend to be biased, but Spokane is rightfully a destination of its own. I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what is available there, which is why I’m returning this year for more. If you’re passing through Washington or want to visit a city that is not trampled by overtourism, Spokane has you covered.
Also, did I mention the food?

Soccer enthusiasts from the Inland Northwest can do more than just “BELIEVE” that professional soccer has landed in Spokane. It’s here in 2024, and organizers say fans can expect it will be better than homemade biscuits wrapped in a pink box.
Like so many times before, life will again imitate art in Spokane. Indeed, visitors to the city may find it shares many of the attributes of the show’s main character. It’s affable, kind, means well and doesn’t always win, but you end up loving it despite itself.
But downtown Spokane’s new 5,000-seat outdoor stadium north of Riverfront Park is anything but a movie set. It is home to the men’s and women’s teams, both affiliated with the United Soccer League.
The men’s team, the Velocity, starts its inaugural season in March 2024. Leigh Veidman from Liverpool, England, is the Velocity’’s first-ever head coach. The women’s team, the Zephyr, will begin their season in August 2024. Scan the QR code to see the teams’ schedules. Single-match tickets go for $20.
The serious Ted Lasso fans may look for some serendipity with the Velocity’s first home match facing Richmond (Virginia, that is. Not the Greyhounds), but we’re pretty positive Roy Kent won’t be there.

Continually voted a top roadside oddity, Spokane’s giant red wagon is a popular spot for the young kids in Riverfront Park. It doubles as a slide and monkey bars.

If the peace of a cemetery is your jam, visit this spot, but you must find “the steps.” Legend has it that the ghosts haunt the steps outside the graveyard.

Please remember that this is a private residence.
TRANSCEND THE WHAT??

High atop the “Lantern” sculpture tucked behind the First Interstate Center for the Arts in Riverfront Park is a hidden message. Local artist Harold Balazs left the quirky surprise. While we don’t recommend climbing the sculpture to see the message, we can recommend Googling it.

Breakfast is one of the greatest meals in the lineup. Spokane runs the gamut from basic diners to fancy brunch spots. The trouble is choosing where to go.
The food case at Madeleine’s Café and Patisserie (415 W Main Avenue) brims with delicious French goodies, making it difficult sometimes to choose. Any way you slice it, you’ll find something tasty.
Chap’s Diner & Bakery (4237 S Cheney Spokane Road) is a sweet little cafe and bakery off Highway 195 in south Spokane. Guy Fieri visited once and featured the spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
Crepe Cafè Sisters (441 N Nettleton Street) in Kendall Yards is inventive with its crepe menu. Oui, oui!

WHO RUN THE WORLD?
Spokane is full of surprises, but it should be no surprise that many of the innovative tastemakers kicking some hiney are women. Here’s our list of some of our must-visit, women-owned restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, breweries, wineries, and bars. The list of boss women is so long that we had to narrow it down to only a few.

WINE
You could spend an entire weekend dedicating your efforts to wine tasting in Spokane. Sixteen wineries dot the Spokane landscape. Many have tasting rooms in downtown Spokane.
Aside from downtown Spokane, the area also features two additional wine tasting clusters. A short drive to the northeast you’ll find the Green Bluff Cluster and just minutes east of downtown, the Spokane Valley Cluster, both featuring award winning wineries.
For a complete list of Spokane area wineries, scan the QR code, but here are a few wineries worth checking out.
Located on an estate built by an eccentric inventor in 1924, the winery overlooks Spokane and often features live music.
BARRISTER
1213 W Railroad Ave barristerwinery.com
Fun fact: thousands of trains rumble through downtown Spokane yearly. This gentle rumbling slowly rocks the wine as it ferments at Barrister, so there’s no need for the winemaker to turn the barrels.
LATAH CREEK WINE CELLARS
13030 E Indiana Ave latahcreek.com
One of the oldest wineries in Washington is Latah Creek. Make sure you try the award-winning Merlot.

Be sure to try a chilled Rosé on a warm summer day on the patio overlooking the Spokane River.
WILDLAND COOPERATIVE

Considering its geographic isolation on the map, getting to Spokane is surprisingly easy. Once you’re here, it’s even more accessible. Let us break it down for you.
FLY
Spokane International Airport has 20 nonstop service destinations and is an easy 12-minute drive to the city center. Stress-free is Spokane’s middle name.
RIDE
All the usual suspects can help you get to your hotel. Grab a cab, Uber or Lyft. Public transportation is also available. Be sure to try the all-electric City Line bus system that runs through downtown. The sleek new buses are a deep purple, so you can’t miss them. In the summer months, hop on one of the myriad electric scooters or bikes available to rent.
WALK
Downtown Spokane is compact, safe, and walkable. Stroll down bustling streets, wander through Riverfront Park, and make sure you walk the Centennial Trail.
