Arriving in Spokane via Amtrak train is an experience unlike any other. The train travels alongside the Columbia River Gorge from Portland, Oregon, amid a dazzling display of lush forest, pristine waters, and rising peaks, offering ample sightseeing before even reaching the city. Spokane’s convenient location along Amtrak's Empire Builder line (which also leaves from Seattle) makes a stop here too enticing to pass up. As it turns out, it’s one that’s worth every minute.
Here are some tips for making the most of your own 36 hours in Spokane:
12:15 a.m. On Arrival
The train arrives in Spokane during the late evening/early morning hours, so book an Uber from the station and bed down at one of the city's downtown Davenport hotels. With hand-painted frescoes and meticulously-restored ballrooms, the ornate Historic Davenport Hotel is an attraction within itself. For sleek and modern decor, try the nearby Davenport Tower.
10 a.m. Easing In
Savor a latte and bowl of housemade granola at Atticus Coffee & Gifts, then make your way to Riverfront Park, a once-railway yard transformed for the Expo '74 World's Fair. Now the heart of the city, it’s 100 riverside acres with attractions galore—including an LED-illuminated, open-air pavilion hosting free light shows on weekend evenings and Spokane’s beloved Garbage Goat. This steel goat sculpture sucks up small pieces of garbage through an interior vacuum.

Spokane is perfect for people who love being outside. If you’re not a local, it’s tough to figure out where to go. Save your energy for the hills because we’ve made it easy for you and chosen the most popular trails in the area. They’re all mixed-use and perfect for running, biking or hiking.
This trail system sits on 1,000 acres of public and private land. With 30 mountain bike trails to choose from, you’re sure to have fun. The elevation gain is moderate, with the highest point at 2,604’ above sea level.
Centennial Trail Spokane, WA Trail: Easy Parking: Depends on where you start

Make a day of it and start in Riverside State Park, where the Centennial Trail begins. Bike the entire 40 miles across state lines to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The whole trail is paved and flat.
This hike follows the Little Spokane River on an old railroad grade. This hike is not very hard, nor does it change elevation too much. The suspension bridge is the perfect spot to view the rocks that resemble a bowl and pitcher.
High Drive Bluff Trails 3418 S Jefferson Drive Spokane, WA Trail: Easy/Intermediate Parking: Free
Mount Spokane State Park 26107 N Mt Spokane Park Drive Mead, WA Trail: Easy/Intermediate/Difficult Parking: Discovery Pass Required
You’ll fit in with the locals on these trails that allow for spectacular views of southwest Spokane. Go at sunset to have your socks knocked off by brilliance. You don’t even have to climb to get the views; they magically appear the second you get on the trail.
Iller Creek/Rocks of Sharon 9100 E Rockcrest Lane Spokane Valley, WA Trail: Intermediate Parking: Free Located in Spokane Valley right off Dishman-Mica Road and Appleway Boulevard, you'll find a small parking lot and south entry to Rocks of Sharon. This hike has various trails to the top, including more challenging terrain, including a 1,200 ft gain in elevation. Don't be intimidated.
Liberty Lake Loop Trail 3707 S Zephyr Road Liberty Lake, WA Trail: Difficult Parking: $2 Parking Fee TLC got it wrong. You should go chasin’ waterfalls but do it on the Liberty Lake Loop Trail! The trail is an 8.5-mile trek filled with cedar groves, a cute little waterfall and beautiful views of Liberty Lake.

This vast state park has plenty of trails. If you're looking for something easy, you'll find it. If you want something challenging, you'll find steep inclines! Mount Spokane is enjoyable all year long. You will pass through alpine meadows and rocky slopes along this climb before reaching the summit.
Dishman Hills Natural Area 625 S Sargent Road Spokane Valley, WA Trail: Easy/Intermediate Parking: Free Dishman Hills is a tremendous four-mile, out-and-back trail located in Spokane Valley. Most cyclists and hikers love the options it provides. This area is unique because it's a neat woodland tucked away in a residential area. The gradual incline makes it a fantastic choice for families.
Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail palousetocascadestrail.org Trail: Easy/Intermediate Parking: Discover Pass Required The Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail is an up-and-coming 250-mile trail that crosses multi-state trails. Start with the portion that begins in Tekoa or Rosalia, WA, and head west to the Cascades.
Black People Hike @BlackPeopleHike Inclusivity is vital to the Spokane outdoor community. You’ll find it in groups like Black People Hike. The group was founded in 2016 by Dorian Waller, Clarence Henderson, and Toiya Taylor. They found most people of color were hesitant to participate in the Pacific Northwest’s plethora of outdoor activities due to the microaggressions experienced by being a person of color in non-traditional spaces like ski slopes and hiking trails. Shamefully, segregation in the 1960s prohibited Blacks in most National Parks. Black People Hike is working to change perception and introduce people of color to the beautiful outdoors. The group hikes, led by Joseph Thaddeus, focus on exploring trails all over the State of Washington. Also included are rock climbing, river floats, and nature walks. Find your next adventure and follow Black People Hike on Instagram. BPH is not exclusive to people of color; all are welcome.

Enjoy the Gardens of Spokane
Sitting at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Spokane has an abundance of snowshoeing trails to choose from, ranging from family-friendly to snow-pros only. Head to Mount Spokane State Park and discover the Centennial Hut Trail and Mount Kit Carson. For other places nearby, venture out to Big Rock Trail in Iller Creek Conservation Area after a big snow. You can also cross the state line into Idaho, and take a guided snowshoe tour at Schweitzer Mountain - all-inclusive with snowshoe rentals and an informative guide.

Spring is one of the best seasons for outdoor activities in Spokane - it’s called the Lilac City for a reason. Take some time this season to explore the abundant and gorgeous gardens and greenways in the city. Stop by Manito Park and take a stroll through the Duncan Garden, Japanese Garden, and the Lilac Garden on a warm, spring day. You can take a walk near Kendall Yards on the Centennial Trail through downtown, and admire the community gardens along the way. If you have a green thumb, this is a great time to attend outdoor events like the Friends of Manito Plant Sale for local goodies and lots of knowledge from master gardeners.

Plan a Day At The Lake
Book a Stay at Quartz Mountain Lookout
With the abundance of lakes surrounding Spokane, it’s only natural to seek them out during the hot summer season. With 76 lakes within a 1-hour’s drive of Spokane, you can plan a day trip by the water and still be home by nightfall. Relax at Eloika Lake, Badger Lake, Newman Lake, or Horseshoe Lake (to name just a few) for easy and convenient day access. Most day-use areas provide picnic tables, bathrooms, and areas to set up lawn chairs and let children play near the shore. Looking for something a little more daring? Try cliff jumping at The Cove in Fisk State Park or at Tubbs Hill near the Coeur d’Alene Resort.
Quartz Mountain Fire Lookout was once on top of Mount Spokane but was decommissioned and moved in 2001 to become a recreational rental. Reservations are available until September 30th, so snag a spot in the fall to savor those last mountain sunsets of the year. Quartz Mountain Lookout can sleep up to four guests and makes for a fun, unique alternative to regular tent camping in the fall. From the scenic drive to the Selkirk Lodge (where vehicles park for the day), and the trek along with huckleberry dotted trails to reading a book or playing cards, there is so much to love about renting a fire lookout on Mount Spokane.

It’s impossible not to notice the river running right through the middle of the city. That’s the Spokane River, and you can raft it, paddleboard it, kayak or swim it. Expert guides from Wiley E. Waters and ROW Adventures will take you for water adventures that begin just below the Spokane Falls in downtown Spokane and take you along the river gorge to Riverside State Park. If you’re looking for calmer waters, grab a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from Fun Unlimited at the river access point under the Division Street Bridge and make your way through the waters of the upper Spokane River. It’s an urban water adventure and affordable too!
Hiking, running, meandering. Whatever you prefer, you’ll find it in the state's two largest state parks: Mount Spokane State Park and Riverside State Park. The two cover a combined total of nearly 25,000 acres. Riverside State Park 9711 W Charles Road Nine Mile Falls, WA 509.465.5064 You’d think a park as vast as Riverside would be a trek. You thought wrong. Located just nine miles northwest of downtown Spokane, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast. The 40-mile long, paved Centennial Trail starts here. Follow it to the end, and you’ll end up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The park has hiking and biking trails, horse trails complete with an obstacle course, and a 60-foot round pen, plus it is ORV friendly. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention plenty of campsites.

Climb
Basalt makes up a good portion of the geologic makeup of the Spokane region, making it perfect for rock climbing enthusiasts. Deep Creek in Riverside State Park (parks.wa.gov/573/ Riverside) has some of the best climbing in the area. You’ll also do well at Minnehaha or Mirabeau Point Park in Spokane Valley.

It’s 100-acres of beauty, filled with family-friendly attractions and peaceful park settings. 50-years ago, it was a brownfield polluted by decades of railyard waste. Thanks to the pioneering spirits of a handful of civic leaders, the area was cleaned up and turned into the 1974 World's Fair site-the first to be environmentally themed, no less.
Ice Age Floods Playground
Let your children play and learn about the events that shaped the region’s geography! The Ice Age Floods Playground features a splash pad, skateboard park, a three-story slide and basketball courts.
US Pavilion
It’s the center of the Riverfront Park universe and now, thanks to recent renovations, a shining beacon. The new light blades on the cables make for a cavalcade of color every night. Grab a blanket, and some snacks, and make a night of it.
Providence Playscape
The city’s first all-inclusive playground, Providence Playscape, allows free movement for children with assisted devices. It’s sensory-rich and designed to promote physical activity and gross motor development skills.
Numerica SkyRide
The lilac gondolas, relics of the World’s Fair, take riders over the lower Falls. The cars are ADA-accessible and hold six passengers.
Great Northern Clock Tower
Looff Carrousel
Handcarved by Charles Looff in 1909, the carrousel was a gift for Looff’s daughter and her husband, who owned Spokane’s Natatorium Park. That park is long gone, but the carrousel remains and delights both young and old.
Numerica Skate Ribbon
It’s not your typical skating rink. The Numerica Skate Ribbon meanders through the west end of Riverfront Park. In the winter, it’s ice skating, but in the summer months, you can roller skate.

A remnant of the Great Northern rail depot, the tower is a silent sentinel tracking the time. It takes a technician 99 cranks to keep the clock going for one week.

Upper Falls
The upper falls are easy to find on the park's north side. Walking through, you’ll come upon two suspension bridges next to the stately white Washington Water Power building. The water is high enough during the spring runoff that it often soaks the pedestrian bridge. It’s the best way to get up close and personal with the Spokane Falls. Better yet, grab a drink at Clinkerdagger (621 W Mallon Avenue) or Anthony’s by the Falls (510 N Lincoln Street) outdoor patios for leisurely views. When you finish gazing at the upper falls, head to the lower falls.
Lower Falls
Perhaps the most spectacular place to view the lower falls is Huntington Park, which sits west of Riverfront Park between Mobius Discovery Center and City Hall. Stop at the Tribal Gathering Place, the plaza surrounded by soothing water features and basalt stonework. Walk straight ahead to the viewing areas and take in the panorama of the lower falls below, framed above by the historic Monroe Street Bridge. If you want to skip all the walking and would rather sit in comfort, the Numerica SkyRide is ADA accessible and offers a 20-minute fly-over for a bird’s eye view. Considered one of the best cable car rides in the world, you’ll gradually descend 200 feet for some great vantage points.

You can eat your way through Browne’s Addition and die happy. Sunday brunch at Browne's Bistro is a classic affair. A prime lunch spot is The Elk, which sits inside an old pharmacy and soda fountain. University District
Spokane’s youngest neighborhood, the University District, is about innovation and entrepreneurship. As the name implies, it is home to six universities and two med schools.

Jack & Dan’s should be top of the list of all the places you should go. The college bar is a Spokane icon. Just across the street is Logan Tavern. You’ll mingle with a mass of college students that may make you feel young or old, depending on your outlook. One of Spokane’s most prolific craft breweries, No-Li Brewhouse, is in the area and well worth a visit. Try Tasty Bun or grab a quick bite at Caruso’s Sandwiches for dining. Pete’s Pizza is another tried and true that claims to have some of the best calzones ever. No visit to the U-District is complete without a stop at Donut Parade. The shop has been making and selling donuts since 1961.

Guests at downtown Spokane’s Feast World Kitchen dine on cuisine from different countries almost every day of the week. But the ever-changing menu of ethnic dishes — from Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea to Ukraine, Venezuela, Vietnam and more — is just one of the things that makes this nonprofit restaurant so special. This humble eatery embraces a huge mission: supporting Spokane’s immigrant and refugee community by serving delicious dishes from around the world. It partners with some 75 chef-entrepreneurs who come from nearly 40 different countries and take turns renting the kitchen to serve specialties from their homelands. Afghanistan. Brazil. Colombia. “less fear, more falafel.” “We feel strongly that there need to be positive spaces in the community for us to get to know each other instead of forming opinions about groups of people without actually interacting with them.” Some of Feast World Kitchen’s chefs and their families came to Spokane from desperate circumstances, such as fleeing civil war or uprisings and living in refugee camps. The nonprofit provides them with a way to earn supplemental income, share their culture, connect with people and resources, and participate in food safety and other training. Twice a month, they’re invited to workshops on the food industry, small business, and immigration issues, such as English language learning and record-keeping.
Feast World Kitchen rents the building from First Presbyterian Church, and some church and community members volunteer at the nonprofit, which employs six staffers, including some from the local immigrant and refugee community. For example, chef program director Maisa Abudayha emigrated from Jordan with her husband and four children in 2013.

Spokane is a city bubbling with energy. That energy is evident in the region’s bustling craft beer scene–30 breweries and counting–and manifests in No-Li Brewhouse owner John Bryant. He's in constant motion, his mind racing with ideas for his brewery, from the addition of a game area for adults complete with Skee-ball to the freshly opened No-Li Bier Hall. The space is adjacent to the current pub near Gonzaga University. It offers all of the No-Li favorites, plus guest taps from other craft breweries from around the Pacific Northwest. This spirit of lifting others permeates the Spokane craft brew scene. "No-Li's focus is to serve the underrecognized, marginalized, and under-served," says No-Li owner John Bryant. "We believe in giving more than we take and to be engaged, community participants." No-Li leads by example, giving back to the community with its "25 Days of Christmas" campaign. Each day during the first 25 days of December, No-Li donates $1,000 to a different Spokane area charity for a total of $25,000. "No-Li has raised and donated $550,000 into communities through 75 plus charitable and non-profit community organizations since COVID started, says Bryant." It isn't just No-Li who uses its power for good. River City Brewing has long donated sales of its Riverkeeper IPA to Spokane Riverkeepers; the group committed to keeping the Spokane River a safe, clean place to explore. YaYa Brewing in Spokane Valley donates sales from its Dishman Hills Pilsner to the Dishman Hills Conservancy. Brick West Brewing's many fundraisers have already made a difference over its two years of existence. The soon to open Common Language Brewing hopes to help women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ advance in the world of craft brewing. The brewery also plans to donate a portion of its profits to organizations that support women, children, and BIPOC. The Spokane region’s breweries embrace collaboration, frequently teaming up to make IPAs, Pilsners, and other delights for customers. Lumberbeard Brewing-YaYa Brewing's Couples Skate hazy DIPA is a perfect example. As John Bryant puts it, "It has taken the collective effort of entire communities, partnerships, and collaborations to make this happen."

A great cocktail is more than just a well-prepared drink. It's also about the feeling that the place and the people give you when you're enjoying it. I've never had a good drink served by bad people. So let's look at all that’s good in Spokane.
Volstead Act

Other things you should know: They serve free popcorn. You can order food off the Cochinito menu from Volstead Act. At midnight the Volstead Act transforms into an industry bar. They open at 3 pm most days, an hour earlier than most happy hours downtown.

Located on the bottom level of the historic Peyton Building is the bar Volstead Act. The vibe welcomes you as soon as you walk in the door. The bartenders always see you coming in with the bar anchoring almost the entire back wall, and I've never walked in without being greeted. It's as approachable as a craft cocktail place can be. Most nights, Volstead Act is run by the ring leader of the craft cocktail scene in Spokane, Roman Harner. When I asked other bartenders who their favorite bartender was in town, they all mentioned Roman. The soft-spoken, reserved young bartender is talented at his craft and passionate about his place. Volstead Act was the first place that Harner ever had a cocktail at 21 years old, and it has been his spot ever since.
Emma Rue’s wraps the corner of Howard and First on the ground floor of the Historic Symons Block Building. When you enter Emma Rue’s, this new place does not follow the trendy, masculine, whiskey den, and leather couches type of feel. The french inspired color palette and wall art have a feminine and sensual tone without feeling girly. The art was a deliberate choice and created by local artist Hazel Miller, an authority in the art of the feminine figure. Emma Rue’s signature cocktail is not on the menu until this spring, but you can ask for it now and look like you know what you’re doing. The Murder She Wrote can’t be found anywhere else because Hein made it up on the fly when a customer ordered a Bourbon Renewal, and he had to improvise some of the ingredients. Hein replaced what he was lacking with an Icelandic Crowberry Liqueur. Yes, a group of crows is a murder, and that is how Hein came up with the name. The bourbon renewal guy loved the drink.

Located on the ground floor of the Historic Bennet Block, Purgatory just feels like the perfect neighbor for Carharrt. Right? Whiskey and workwear just make sense together. Purgatory hits you on the nose as soon as you walk in the door. The smell of cedar chips and barbeque combined with the beautiful woodwork gives you a warm feeling. And then, you see the whiskey wall. It’s a beautiful thing. With over 600 bottles, Purgatory’s selection should be the most impressive thing about the place, but I am here to testify that its bartender Phoebe McShane’s energy and skill behind the bar are that will impress you most. But the humble mixologist prefers to talk about her struggle making Purgatory’s signature cocktail, the Up in Smoke Old Fashioned. The Up in Smoke Old Fashioned is a seamless blend of sweet and smoky accented with hints of citrus. It’s named the Up in Smoke because Phoebe lit her hair on fire on her second day working at Purgatory while trying to make the drink.
Hogwash Whiskey Den
Hidden in the basement of the Washington Cracker Building, Hogwash is the type of cool that you can’t fake. The low ceilings combined with the charred posts from a warehouse fire in the basement of this early 20th-century industrial space create an authenticity you cannot replicate.

As you duck walking down into Hogwash, you feel like you just discovered something, and trust me, you have. Simon Moorby runs Hogwash. He is the master of the milk punch and a respected bartender in the craft cocktail scene.

On the first floor of the Historic Legion Building, Cease & Desist has made itself a little harder to find than the typical cocktail bar in Spokane. Like any good book club, there has to be a secret bookshelf that opens to let you inside.

Clarified milk punch is sweet, citrusy, smooth, and clear. The heavy consistency seems in brilliant contrast with the clarity of the drink. Moorby’s milk punch unifies the complex blend of tastes under a single note. It is as close to creative perfection as you will find in Spokane’s craft cocktail scene. Moorby always rims the glass with lemon and sprinkles with nutmeg before serving. It’s the best thing you’ll order in 2022. Trust me.
Charles Bukowski once spoke about the importance of style, and this book club’s foremost mixologist, Ben Butler, heard the message loud and clear. The tall, charismatic barkeep is unarguably one of the best in Spokane, but what’s more, is that he does it with a charm that makes you feel like your drink is the only one he’s making that evening. Butler has a simple philosophy of brokering the correct cocktail to the right person, so when I asked him what drink he would make us, he said the Randhattan. Yes, my last name is Rand, and the drink is named after me. It is a delicious spin on a classic. The Randhattan is made the same way as a Manhattan but with minor tweaks. First, China-China replaces sweet vermouth. It’s a bitter French liqueur. After the drink is shaken and strained into a cocktail glass, a floater of Grand Marnier is added before serving. The small changes rid the classic of the vermouth after taste and make it more citrusy on the finish.

While some towns struggled through the reshuffling of Minor League Baseball teams in 2020, the Spokane Indians elevated to High-A status and became an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. The Indians now host 66 home games at Avista Stadium during their 132-game season.
The Sp’q’n’i Indians (Spo-ka-NEE) are notorious for their hospitality and a season filled with family-friendly themed event nights. The baseball franchise works with the Spokane Tribe to honor the heritage of the region. Avista Stadium is adorned with Salish language translations and historical markers, providing spectators the chance to engage in the region’s rich Native American history.

Famous for its red turf and tailgates, Roos Field is a short 25 minute drive from downtown Spokane in the heart of the charming town of Cheney.

Martin Stadium Pullman, WA Season: August-November The Cougs are celebrated by locals as a hometown team, and experiencing a game at Martin Stadium is always worth the 90-minute drive south from Spokane through the rolling hills of Eastern Washington’s Palouse, one of the country’s lushest farmlands.
