Turning bags into bread

How many plastic bread bags and shopping bags do you throw out every week? What if these bags could be upcycled into something that could generate income to buy bread for another household?

// About Bags4Bread

Visit Stellenbosch launched the socio-economic initiative, Bags4Bread, in March 2022 in collaboration with seven incredibly talented female crocheters in Kayamandi. These women used their crochet skills to turn a humble plastic bread or shopping bag into a uniquely South African product that is both useful and sustainable. Every product sold will help a local Kayamandi family put bread on the table and reduce plastic pollution.

Environmental Impact

When we make a conscious effort to reduce our plastic waste, we can inspire others to do the same and help create a culture of sustainability. By keeping plastic bread and shopping bags out of landfills, we can encourage more responsible consumption. We are also now using old VHS cassette tape for wine bottle bags.

Just one upcycled product takes numerous plastic bags out of our rivers and landfills.

Here’s how much just one product make a difference:

How to order?

• Email us at bags4bread@visitstellenbosch.org with the number of lanyards, slings, bags or keyrings you’d like to order. We’ll advise payment details.

• You are welcome to contact us for custom orders. Our team can manufacture different items, such as bigger bags or tablet covers, etc. If you think of it, we will do I best to manufacture it.

• Please note: Each bag is truly unique, made with love and care. Please allow at least a couple of weeks turnaround time for a larger order – we’ll be able to give estimates when you advise your requirements.

• Place your order as early as possible to ensure it is ready for your conference or event well in advance.

How to donate VHS Tape cassettes, bread and shopping bags?

If you would like to donate used plastic items, including VHS Tape cassettes, bread bags and plastic shopping bags, please drop them off at the Visit Stellenbosch office at 47 Church Street. You can also post them to Postnet Stellenbosch Eikestad.
