Raise the Roof

For over 100 years, a tiny house situated on the roof of a commercial building has left visitors and locals alike wondering what’s the story here. In 1937 the daughter of the man who built the former H.A. Moyer Carriage Factory explained that this tiny home was an “architectural gimmick” used to attract additional attention to their business! Well over 100 years later the tiny home has gotten a makeover and still creates conversation around town.

Just a mere 13.9 feet across and only 11 feet wide on the inside sits the skinniest building in the city of Syracuse. Francesca’s Bake House is a business that has expanded from Francesca’s Cucina, an Italian keepsake located in Syracuse’s Little Italy. Originally the skinny skyscraper started out as Fresh Italian Products, a pasta house, and was most recently a photography studio until the restaurant purchased the building in 2023.

Retro Roads

These cars were cruisin’ through ‘Cuse on retro roads during the 1970’s on Syracuse’s I-81 near the now Destiny USA mall. In the distance one can spot the tanks in what was known as “Oil City”, a site where several dozen petroleum storage tanks were located prior to the mall.

A Heart for SYR

Historically Syracuse has always been a melting pot of culture, creation, and churches. Assumption Church has been spreading their message of peace, reconciliation and love to our neighbors on Syracuse’s Northside dating back to its founding in 1845. fair haven beach state park

Situated between Great Lake Ontario, the Tug Hill Plateau & Oneida Lake, Oswego County’s unique geography provides a variety of year-round recreational opportunities. Reel in a recordbreaking catch on the famous Salmon River. Fire up the sled to ride hundreds of miles of trails covered in lake effect snow. Kick back on a white sandy beach to enjoy a breath-taking sunset. Oswego County made its mark on New York State & American history due to its strategic location on Lake Ontario, which provided a wealth of natural resources. Today, these natural resources are the foundation of the area’s tourism industry, attracting visitors to enjoy four seasons of fun. The unique role the county & its residents have played in history is documented in local museums, historic sites, cemeteries & libraries. With great outdoors, notable history, family-friendly festivals & welcoming hospitality, it’s always a great time to visit Oswego County.

Auburn was once a hotspot of activity in the abolitionist, suffrage & civil rights movements. Given this, notable figures such as Harriet Tubman, William H. Seward & Emily Howland once called the county home as they lived out their legacies. All it takes is a short walk down historic South Street to see how much history is housed here. Outside the city, enjoy a breath of fresh air as you take in the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes. Scenic driving routes, wooded areas, cascading waterfalls & lakeside views only scratch the surface. Cayuga County is beautiful and accessible all year long.

The neighborhoods in Greater Syracuse are filled with charm, beauty, and adventure. Living here you’ll experience a mosaic of customs and people, contributing to a year-round variety of art, history and culture.

Welcome to the neighborhood Strathmore

The stickley House Foundation Michael o’connor

Located near the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Burnet Park, Upper Onondaga Park and Hiawatha Lake , on the southwest side of Syracuse, this charming neighborhood is filled with homes built in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Many were designed by Ward Wellington Ward and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You’ll find a mix of modern ranches, mission style cottages, traditional colonials and more lined with beautiful sidewalks for easy walkability.

FUN FACT: This neighborhood association is very active and hosts many annual events such as Art on the Porches and a holiday decorating contest. This area also has one of the best views of the Syracuse skyline.

This vibrant eastside neighborhood is home to many Syracuse University students and faculty. Westcott Street was created in the late 1800’s and named after Syracuse Mayor, Amos Westcott. It was one Syracuse’s earliest streetcar suburbs. Many homes in this neighborhood still reflect the Queen or Princess Anne style with steep roofs, cross gables and expansive porches. The arts and culture are big in this community. The annual Westcott Street Cultural Fair is celebrated in September.

FUN FACT: The Gustav Stickley House, a threestory wood frame Queen Anne style, is in this neighborhood at 438 Columbus Avenue. Gustav Stickley was a famous designer and furniture maker known as the father of the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

sedgwick Skaneateles

This neighborhood was Syracuse’s first residential historic district. The SedgwickHighland-James Preservation District was established in 1977 and includes more than 200 homes. These homes were products of the finest Syracuse architects and builders like Ward Wellington Ward, Dwight James Baum and Archimedes Russell. Colonial Revival, Italianate and Tudor Revival homes can be found on the winding roadways near James, Dewitt, Farmer and Oak Streets.

FUN FACT: The house on 1500 James Street is one of only six remaining Sears Magnolia model homes in the country. It was a mail order from the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog and sold between 1918 and 1922. It was delivered in two railroad boxcars, ready-to-assemble with nails and a 75-page instruction book.

Skaneateles will provide you with the “frozen in time” feeling.
