Total eclipse in the heart of New York
Visit Onondaga County on April 8, 2024 and you’ll experience a historical event first-hand — the 2024 total solar eclipse! Syracuse and Onondaga County are in the path of totality, meaning the moon will completely cover the sun, making the city go dark at 3:23 p.m. for about 1 minute and 24 seconds in downtown Syracuse.
With our impressive variety of venues, Syracuse is the ideal destination to make this celestial event your most memorable one yet. Get an extra dose of education and take the kids to the Museum of Science and Technology or hear the sounds of the wild at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo . Choose a historic spot to pair with this historic event. The Erie Canal Museum , Clinton Square and the Everson Museum of Art are some of the most iconic and historic spots in the city. Since the darkness only lasts a short time, pair it with some fun time at Destiny USA for shopping and entertainment or Upstate Medical University Arena at the War Memorial for big hockey action on the ice (Go Crunch!). Be one with nature and explore one of our many parks such as the Old Erie Canal State Historic Park , the Onondaga Creekwalk (a fantastic multi-use trail to take in the sights of downtown Syracuse) or Upper Onondaga Park to get the best city skyline view.
This event is happening just before dinner, so why not make some reservations or hit up a local restaurant you won’t find anywhere else? Sample out-of-this-world barbeque at Angry Smokehouse , go for the Harvest Moon salad at Bull & Bear Roadhouse , get a half moon cookie at Lyncourt Bakery , or a cosmic cocktail at Peacock Bar and Grill . Sample flavors from
around the planet at Salt City Market on historic Salina Street. This new food hall and public market serves up everything from cakes to cocktails, with multi-ethnic menus featuring everything from Vietnamese to Ethiopian, Burmese, Middle Eastern and more. And with plenty of hotel accommodations for you to enjoy, you’re all set to make the most out of your 2024 solar eclipse experience too.
Totality in Syracuse will be totally worth it. You won’t have another chance for an event like this in the United States for at least another 20 years! Book your stay and get ready to play.

stories in history
The flying elephant
Did you know that the classic story of Dumbo originated in Syracuse? “Dumbo: The Flying Elephant” was written by Helen Aberson Pearl (Helen Mayer) and her husband Harold Pearl before being sold to another Syracusan, Everett Whitmyre, who suggested they sell the story to Walt Disney. Disney quickly gave the couple an offer agreeing to publish the story and make it into a movie. A third collaborator on the project, Helen Durney was also a Syracuse native. Durney is believed to have created the original sketches and illustrations for the story. Durney’s papers, including drawings related to Dumbo, can be found at Syracuse University in the library archives.
Long-lost friends
The beloved children’s book illustrator and author, Eric Carle, was born right here in Syracuse, NY! Author of the world-renowned story, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” Carle, fondly remembered his childhood days in Syracuse. In fact, Carle hoped his book “Friends” would help him find a friend he knew from Syracuse when he was three years old, before his family moved back to Germany when he was six. Eventually in 2015, another Syracuse native and author, Sean Kirst, helped Carle find and reconnect with this childhood friend, Flo. Just recently a sign was installed outside Carle’s childhood home on John Street in Syracuse.
Syracuse is a city rich in history. From the origins of democracy with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy to salt-mining and the Erie Canal, the stories of Syracuse are many. Discover some of our lesser known historical tales and visit Syracuse to unearth some of your own
Breaking barriers
The daughter of Jermain Lougen, once hailed as the “Underground Railroad King,” Dr. Sarah Lougen Fraser was a local African-American leader in her own right. In 1876, Lougen became the first African-American female graduate from Syracuse University’s Medical College and one of the first four AfricanAmerican female doctors in the nation. By 1883, Lougen had moved to the Dominican Republic and became the first female physician in the history of the Dominican Republic. Lougen eventually moved back to Syracuse, settling on Wescott Street while continuing to practice. She later moved to Washington, D.C. to be with her daughter. She is remembered locally through the Dr. Sarah Lougen Fraser Center, Upstate Medical University’s children’s health clinic located on Salina Street. Find out more about the Lougen family with the Freedom Bound exhibit at the Onondaga Historical Association . Considered the epicenter of the women’s rights movement, the Finger Lakes region celebrates trailblazers such as Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Iroquois matriarchs who paved the way toward a brighter future for women across the country. Celebrate the forward-thinking female pioneers

Whether you’re looking to take on the ultimate gastro challenge or you’re reminiscing about the Half Moons from back home, check out these other signature Syracuse dishes and where to find them.
Half-moon cookies
. A fluffy vanilla (or chocolate) cookie, flipped over and topped with half vanilla frosting and half chocolate — if you know it, you love it. Hailing from Utica originally, this sweet treat can be found all over bakeries in Syracuse. WHAT TO ORDER + WHERE : the classic Half-Moon Cookie at Harrison Bakery or Lyncourt Bakery, a “Full Moon” (all white frosting) at Green Hills Farms grocery store in Nedrow.

Food host Adam Richman took on the 6-pound frittata challenge at Mother’s Cupboard during his Syracusecentric episode. WHAT TO ORDER + WHERE : “The Whole” Frittata at Mother’s Cupboard , the Meat Frittata at Finally Ours Diner on Onondaga Hill.
Chicken riggies
. An ItalianAmerican tradition that was cooked up in nearby Utica, NY, chicken riggies are a staple throughout kitchens in the greater Syracuse area. A perfect blend of rigatoni pasta, chicken, peppers and a spicy tomato and cream sauce, there are dozens of places to sample this savory specialty, many with their own take (and varying levels of heat) on the
original recipe. WHAT TO ORDER + WHERE : Chicken Riggies at Pastabilties, Francesca’s Cucina or The Preserve
