Welcome TO CHRISTMAS IN TRURO
I
t’s the most wonderful time of the year! Celebrate Christmas in Truro with festive fun for all the family, including new events that we’re sure you will love, and some of Truro’s most treasured pastimes. What does Christmas in Truro mean? It means the Farmers Market, where you can get a taste of a true Cornish Christmas, where the smell of tempting Christmas treats fills the air. It means the Hall for Cornwall, where you can go to the pantomime and shout ‘it’s behind you’ at the top of your voice. It means late night shopping, navigating your way around the cobbled streets under the mesmerising Christmas lights, with the sound of those classic Christmas tunes ringing out around the city. This year, we are also going to make new memories. Father Christmas himself will be ready and waiting in the Crypt at the Cathedral, ready to hear all about what your child wants to find under the tree on Christmas morning. You can also relax in Victoria Gardens in the glow of the new Christmas lights, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Use this guide to find out more about how we are celebrating Christmas in Truro this year. For more detailed information and updates, please go to our website, visittruro.org.uk, and follow our social media pages @visittruro. From everyone here in Truro - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Festive
FRIDAY
Festive Friday marks the start of the Christmas celebrations in Truro.
F
estive Friday will be on Friday 19th of November, and many events will be taking place across the city to welcome the festive season. The main event will be the Christmas lights switch-on, in partnership with Pirate FM and Truro BID. Pirate FMs Johnny Cowling and Lucy Start will be broadcasting from Boscawen Street from 3pm, building up to the much anticipated switch-on. There will be special entertainment at 6.30pm from the stage in Boscawen Street, organised by the Hall for Cornwall. The lights will then be switched-on by Johnny Cowling, Truro’s Town Crier, Lionel Knight, and cast members from the Hall for Cornwall’s Christmas show, Cinderella. Following the switch-on, Father Christmas will take to his sleigh for a parade around Truro. To see the parade route, turn to pages 6 and 7, where the route is marked on the map.
2
Along with the City Centre Christmas Lights, you can experience new festive lighting in Truro’s beautiful Victoria Gardens. Just follow the festive lit path around the upper end of the gardens and you’ll find a collection of colourful, giant illuminated Christmas decorations amongst the trees, including a huge gift box which doubles up as a perfect selfie spot! The Victoria Gardens lights will be switched on during Festive Friday celebrations from 7pm until 8pm. Thereafter, the lights will be illuminated daily between 8am and 10am, and again from 2pm to 5pm. On Wednesdays, the lights will be on for an extended period until 8pm, so all you late night shoppers can take a break and relax in the glow of the lights. Elsewhere in the city, Duchy Fairs will be bringing their Big Festive Cornwall Shop Small Market to Lemon Quay on Friday 19th and
Search Truro’s' Reindeer Trail
Saturday 20th November. Over 60 local traders will be on the Quay across the weekend, helping you to find the perfect Christmas gift. Truro Farmers Market will also be on the Quay across both dates, giving you a taste of a perfect Cornish Christmas. Both markets will be on Lemon Quay until 9pm on Festive Friday to coincide with the lights switch-on. Is there anything better than shopping under the stars? The reindeer trail will also begin on Festive Friday. Illuminated reindeers will be taking pride of place in shop windows, so keep your eyes peeled for our lovely decorative reindeers and see how many you can find. So we can all enjoy Festive Friday safely, the main shopping streets will be traffic free from 11am, including Boscawen Street, St Nicholas Street, King Street, Princes Street, and Duke Street. Park and Ride will also operate later on Friday 19th November, with the last services leaving the City Centre at 9.30pm.

Christmas Father at Truro Cathedral FINDING
Join Coppice Theatre this December for a unique storytelling and grotto experience.
F
ather Christmas is hiding in his grotto somewhere in Truro Cathedral and the elves need your help to find him. As you walk around the Cathedral, you will hear the stories of James Bubb, the first Clerk of Works of Truro Cathedral in the 1800s. You will also hear the tale of the Cathedral Mouse, who wishes they could sing with the children in the choir. This Christmas, their
dream comes true and you will be able to hear the mouse sing in St Mary’s Chapel. You will then get the chance to meet Father Christmas once his hiding place has been uncovered, where you will be able to tell him all about what you would like for Christmas and you will receive a gift. Each show is 30 minutes long and requires walking between spaces and traversing staircases.
Enjoy the festivities at Truro Cathedral with a range of carol services, as well as the traditional Midnight Mass and Christmas Day service.
