What’s in a name?

Downtown Vacaville is home to several of the city’s most popular bars. Whether you’re singing along to dueling pianos at Mäksē or dropping in on happy hour at Merchant and Main, you’re in for a good drink and a good time!
exploring downtown
This expansive playground is a wonderland just waiting to be explored. With climbing structures, slides, swings (including accessible options), a tiny tots play area, a giant dragon sculpture, and more, this spot is a perfect place for families visiting downtown to expend some energy while having lots of fun!
Historic Homes
Get the feel of walking through time as you stroll down Buck Avenue. With everything from Victorian, Colonial, Mission, and Ranch style homes along this historic street, you’ll get a glimpse of Vacaville through the ages. Get a look at the famous Buck Mansion at 225 Buck Avenue (this is a private residence, so please do not disturb the occupants).
Housed in a beautiful restored and converted Victorian home, Vacaville Art Gallery is a perfect spot to explore a blend of artistic styles and mediums created by local artists, including the wellknown giant microscope created by Phillip Glashoff that stands just ouside the gallery. Walk across the bridge on the corner of Davis and Main and you’ll find yourself in Andrews Park, home of the Friday night Creekwalk Summer Concert Series from June-August. This vast park, sprawling over the creek and up the hillside to Monte Vista Avenue, is a peaceful place to explore the creek trail, enjoy a family picnic, or challenge someone to a game of catch.
Get to know Vacaville’s history at the Vacaville Museum. Featuring historic photographs and exibits on the region’s agricultural history, it’s a perfect place to get lost in the past. Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the aforementioned Historic Homes self-guided tour while you’re there.
Explore unique boutiques like Pretty N Chic or Rise and Redemption, for everything from clothing to home decor. Downtown Vacaville hosts specialized stores like DeBartolo Jewelers, Ray’s Cycle, and Pawsh Pet Boutique.
Built in 1907, Vacaville’s old Town Hall was one of the first reinforced concrete structures in the West. This building once housed the city’s government offices and the town jail. Now, it houses the Vacaville Heritage Council and tons of historic documents and artifacts.
This open space in the heart of Downtown is where you’ll find a collection of restaurants and coffee shops, and a perfect spot to sit and rest during a stroll through the city’s historic district.
Experience this remodeled theater, where you can relax in comfy recliners and even sip on an adult beverage (or a variety of other snacks and drinks) in plush, cozy comfort.
Glide across the ice at the coolest spot in town! Vacaville Ice Sports offers skate rentals, a small arcade, and concession stand to keep visitors entertained and active all year-round.
PLAY 4 ALL PARK VACAVILLE
Play 4 All Park opened in late 2022 for children of all ages and abilities. The park had been something our community has wished for, for many years. It is located at 815 Elmira Road, just east of Leisure Town Road.
With major fundraising, grants and support from the community, Play 4 All Park began building in two phases. The first phase of the park included a playground with activities that are safe and fun for children that use wheelchairs, walkers or with special needs, a We-Go-Round, a We-Saw, large wheelchairaccessible swings, and a zipline. All equipment was constructed by Landscape Structures, a Minnesota based company. The park was conceived and designed by Play 4 All’s President, Tom Phillippi of Phillippi Engineering.
The second phase of the park features two Challenger League Ballparks, two dog parks, a grassy play area, walking paths and additional parking. This phase of the park will be completed later in 2023.
A huge thank you to the whole community of Vacaville and everyone involved in making Play 4 All a reality for our children of all abilities to experience!
Donations can be made online at Play4allvacaville.org/donate or via snail mail at the following address:

BE A ROCK STAR
You’ll find more than 50 boulder problems on the rocks in the Browns Valley Open Space on the north side of Vacaville.
Most of the climbing here is on the easy to moderate side, with the most difficult problems in the V7-V9 range. The boulders are easy to get to and on a clear day you can see the Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance.
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT
The Nut Tree Boulders are easily accessible from either Interstate 80 or the 505, and you’ll find more than 50 problems in the easy to moderate range. The rock here is basalt, which means the good holds are really good, but there can also be some loose stuff in there. It also means you can’t climb here after it rains or the holds could break. The Nut Tree Boulders are not as busy as other climbing areas, and are split into three sections: Boxcar Woody Boulders, Hillcrest Boulders, and Woodcrest Boulders.
The Boxcar Woody Boulders are a popular after-work climbing spot because there is no approach - the boulders are right next to the road. The Hillcrest Boulders are a little more spread out, but have the most problems, as well as the area classics. The hardest problem in Vacaville is found at Hillcrest (Scott’s Traverse, V9). The Woodcrest Boulders are more concentrated and is the most popular area in the Nut Boulders. It’s easy to run a circuit on the problems in this area and there’s also a short approach The area is still being developed, but most problems fall within V0-V5. The majority of the boulders are around 10-20 feet, but there’s the occasional 30-foot climb if you like exciting highballs. The best time to come is in the winter and on cooler spring or fall days.
DIRECTIONS, PARKING, & REGULATIONS
The trails in the Browns Valley Open Space are not marked, so you have to do a bit of exploring to find the boulders. There are several entrance spots for the open space area- look for cattle grates and signs posted.
Parking is available by the corner of Wrentham and Vaca Valley Parkway. Please be courteous about parking in the residential neighborhood.
There are also cattle in the area (vaca does mean “cow” after all), and you shouldn’t approach them. Because of the animals in the area, be extra diligent about packing out whatever you take in
There’s no camping in the area, but there are plenty of hotels and RV parks in town.
Basalt can be very fragile when wet and easily break, so you should not climb here within 24 hours of a rain.
tips
Difficulty- 2 stars
Most of the bouldering here is in the easy to moderate range.
Time to Complete- 2 days
There are definitely enough problems to come back again and again, but most people head out for a weekend.
Seasonality- Fall/Winter/Spring-the best time to climb here is in the winter when temperatures are cooler. You can climb on cooler days in the spring or fall, but June through September is usually too hot. You can’t climb here within 24 hours of rain or holds could break off.
Dog-Friendly- Yes, on-leash or at least under voice control due to the cows roaming around the area.
6 MUST-DO HIKES IN
& AROUND
LAGOON VALLEY PARK
Peña Adobe Road just off of Interstate 80, Vacaville
Difficulty: Easy to Strenuous
The scenic 470-acre Lagoon Valley Regional Park includes the historic Peña Adobe home, barbecue areas, horseshoe pits, multi-purpose field, bike trails, a 30,000 square foot fenced-in dog park, and fantastic hiking complete with beautiful views. There are multiple trails to choose from, depending on how hard of a workout you’re looking for. For a flat, easy walk, take the 2 mile loop around the lake. This half dirt, half paved track offers an easy pace and great views of the surrounding hillsides. For a bigger challenge, tackle one of the tougher climbs into the hills. The Tower Trail, a 1.5 mile trail with a 620 foot elevation climb, is a local favorite and will give your quads a workout!
LAKE SOLANO
8685 Pleasants Valley Road, Winters
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
VACAVILLE
ROCKVILLE HILLS PARK
Rockville Road, Fairfield
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Pick a trail, any trail! The Rockville Hills Regional Park encompasses nearly 600 acres of grasslands and oak woodlands, and features more than 20 trails, many with gorgeous views of the surrounding hills. Whether you are looking for a quick hike or an all-day adventure, there is something for everyone. Rock formations, cool caves for exploring, picnic areas, a lovely little lake, and over 30 miles of tracks and trails makes Rockville Hills a must-see hiking destination in Solano County. Each trail is wellmaintained, but we would recommend printing out a map of the trails beforehand as some of them are not clearly marked. Rockville Hills is great for kids, and dogs are permitted on leashes.
Tip: There is a $3 per person and $1 per dog entrance fee that is strictly enforced.
Lake Solano is known as one of the best fly fishing spots in the Sacramento Valley, but there’s plenty for boaters, swimmers, hikers, bikers, nature lovers, campers, and picnickers to do as well. The lake was formed by the Putah Diversion Dam and also offers 90 campsites. Lake Solano is a great spot to take little hikers, where they can see gaggles of peacocks and enjoy some beginner level trails.
BROWNS VALLEY HILLS
Vacaville, CA
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
Although there are no officially-marked trails, the open space areas in the Browns Valley hills are a favorite spot for local hikers. Steep slopes give way to spectacular sweeping views of Vacaville, and it’s a great place to explore with furry friends. Bonus points if you visit the Instagram-worthy tree swing! There are a few different entry spots- take Browns Valley parkway, left on Wrentham Drive, left on Rambleton Drive, and look for an entry way to walk up into the hills.
SKYLINE WILDERNESS PARK
2201 Imola Ave, Napa
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
The Sugarloaf Mountain trail in Skyline Wilderness Park is definitely one of those Napa hikes worthy of your attention. The trail leads you through grasslands and chaparral, winding uphill through oak forest and ultimately providing great views from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. Reaching the summit involves a challenging, but short, section of steep trail which takes careful negotiation and is not great for little hikers, but that just makes reaching the summit more rewarding. The trailhead is accessible from inside the RV park at the end of Imola Avenue. A day-use fee is charged per vehicle, at which time you can pick up a copy of the park map. Adequate parking is available.
COLD CANYON- PUTAH CREEK STATE WILDLIFE AREA
2201 Imola Ave, Napa
State Highway 128, 7 miles west of the town of Winters
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
The Cold Canyon Reserve is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System and one of the few UC Reserve areas open for public use. It is located within the Putah Creek State Wildlife Area, where trails range from moderately easy to strenuously difficult. The Stebbins Cold Canyon Loop trail is a 5 mile loop that takes you up to the rim of the mountains surrounding Lake Berryessa. On a clear day you can even see all the way to the Sacramento skyline from the top of the trail. Although there are other less strenuous trails that are dog and kid friendly within the Putah Creek Wildlife Area, the Cold Canyon Loop has steep stairs and some rocky areas to navigate through, so it is not great for little ones or pets. Plan for about 2.5 hours to complete the hike. A day-use fee is requested.

outdoor expeditions
Grab a shake or avocado toast at Virtue Juice Bar or Healthy Life Shakes and tackle one of the challenging hiking trails at Lagoon Valley Park. The tower climb is a local favorite: its 620 foot elevation gain gives climbers who make it to the top unbelievable views of Vacaville, Fairfield, and beyond. Or head to the North part of town to explore the Browns Valley Open Space, where enormous basalt boulders offer climbs from easy to challenging. Bring a crash pad if you plan to tackle the more difficult holds!

farm to fork flavors
Ready to wind down and explore the outskirts of town? Cruise through the historic agricultural heartland of Pleasants Valley to find farm-fresh lavender, eggs, cheeses, and produce. Longtime Vacaville institution Morningsun Herb Farm carries herbs, vegetables, ornamentals, and fruit trees that you won’t find anywhere else. Across town, Lockewood Acres presses fresh jellies, syrups, and shrub (a fruity, sweetened vinegar) from produce grown in their orchards and fields. Sample these and other one-of-a-kind local products when you explore Vacaville’s farming community.
packs of ‘pacas
Vacaville is also home to Menagerie Hill Ranch, an alpaca farm that is packed with sweet, gentle alpacas and all sorts of ‘paca products like yarn, clothing, and more! Alpaca fiber is warmer and lighter in weight than cashmere wool and can be used in knitting and weaving, so make sure to pick some up for yourself or a friend during your visit. The farm is open by appointment only (except during National Alpaca Days in September, when they open their doors to the public for a whole weekend) so please call ahead or visit their website for more information about their tours or to set up a time to visit!
AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO LAGOON VALLEY PARK
Lagoon Valley Park is a welcome respite along the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and the Bay Area. It’s located on the outskirts of Vacaville, a charming Solano County community that borders the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area. With its grass-covered hills rolling over the horizon, stately oak trees, a small lagoon that shimmers in the sun, and 470 acres of hiking and biking trails, this park is a delightful Northern California escape.
HISTORY
Most of the park land was acquired by the City in the early 1970’s, but the park was developed under an agreement between the City and Solano County. Responsibility for the operation of the park was transferred from the County to the City of Vacaville in 1994, but the history of Lagoon Valley and the people who lived here goes back long before that. Until the 1800s, this land was inhabited by Native Americans. By the 1840s, the region that would one day become Solano County was settled by pioneers, including the prominent Vaca and Pena families. To this day visitors can explore an old cemetery located in the park as well as the Pena Adobe, one of the oldest structures in the county.
CLASSIC ADVENTURES
Lagoon Valley is a relatively small park, but there are plenty of adventures to be had within its boundaries. Hiking and dog walking are among the most popular activities here, but it’s also well-loved for fishing and non-motorized boating in the lagoon, trail running, disc golf, and mountain biking. The scenery is golden later in the year but crisp and green in the springtime.
From the short and flat 2-mile loop around the lagoon to the harder switchbacks into higher elevations, this park has something for everyone. Kick it up a notch and tackle the 20-mile loop around the entire park. Keep an eye out for native wildlife as you hike, but also enjoy the sight of grazing cows that roam the lower fields of this oasis.
A popular trail run is to follow the route chosen for the classic Vacaville race, the 10K Tower Challenge. It starts with the short loop around the lagoon before ascending a gravel road to a radio tower on one of the park’s highest hills. It features about 620 feet of elevation gain between miles 3-5.
If you prefer to explore the trails on two wheels rather than your own two feet, the park is also one of the premier mountain biking destinations in Solano County. A good place to start is with the 7.5-mile trail that you’ll find on the left as soon as you enter the park. Continue on past the wooden bridge and follow the trail to the tree line before ascending 1,181 feet in elevation on this thrilling loop.
Lagoon Valley is one of the most dog-friendly places around. In addition to the walking trails, you’ll also find a 30,000-square-foot off-leash fenced-in dog park for your four-legged family members to run free. Horseback riding is also allowed at the park, so keep an eye out for equestrian users on the trails. There’s also a 27-basket disc golf course in the park, and the Lagoon Valley Disc Golf Club meets at the course weekly. Anyone can join them, and they’ve put in a lot of work to improve the course over the last year.
Last, but not least, go for a paddle around the lake. It’s not very deep (it’s around six feet) and is not stocked with fish, but it makes for a peaceful day on a paddle board or kayak.
SECRETS OF THE PARK
With its rolling hills, dramatic skies, and surprisingly charming landscape, Lagoon Valley Park has tons of scenic viewpoints and quiet spots just waiting to be discovered.

Early morning is a great time to explore the park, although it is rarely crowded during any time of the day. Early in the day, you’ll be treated to dewy views, cool mists, and lovely golden light casting over the hills. In the afternoon and evening, however, there are some incredible places to watch the sunsets, especially if the sky is in the process of clearing from a recent storm.
One of the best places to catch a sunset is the picturesque wooden swing that is well-loved by professional and amateur photographers alike. It’s located at the top of one of the peaks along the 7.5-mile mountain biking and hiking trail mentioned above. It’s somewhat hard to find, but you can follow the directions on page to find it, and the view from the top is worth the effort, whether you file it away as a mental image or add it to your Instagram feed.
ENTRANCE FEE AND DIRECTIONS
One of the best parts about Lagoon Valley Park is that it is so easy to access. Located right off I-80, it’s the perfect place to break up your daily commute or get out of the city on a weekend. Take exit 51B off I-80 onto Pena Adobe Road. The park’s entrance is just off the freeway and very obvious. As of the winter of 2021, the fee is $5 to park your car each time you pull into the park, although $50 annual passes are also available for purchase ahead of time.

TENNIS COURTS community parksDISCOVER VACAVILLE’S TREE SWINGS ALONGSIDE FOUR OF OUR FAVORITE LOCAL ADVENTURERS AS THEY SHARE HIKING DIRECTIONS, TRAIL TIPS, AND HELPFUL INFO TO GET YOU TO THE TOP AND READY TO SWING!
THE LAGOON VALLEY SWING
LOCAL EXPERT: ANGIE SMITH
“It’s the simple things in life that often make us smile the most. The tree swing at Peña Adobe Park is definitely on the list for sure. I discovered this hidden gem a few years ago while hiking on one of the many trails throughout the park.
DIRECTIONS:
Enter the park off I-80 in Vacaville. As you enter, follow the signs to the dog park. As you pass the dog park you will want to head up the gravel fire road, continuing through the gate up the hill till you come to where it turns and levels off a bit. At the turn, there will be a trail on the left-hand side going the opposite direction of the road. Take that to the large oak tree where the swing is located.
ADVICE:
I would rate this as a moderate hike due to the fact that it is a gradual uphill climb. A shoe with good tread is recommended since the terrain is gravel and dirt trail. The conditions will vary depending on the weather. This is not a shaded hike so don’t forget the sunscreen and some water. It should take about 20 minutes to reach the site where you can take in the view while swinging under the canopy of one of the oak trees in this amazing place.”
LOCAL EXPERT: MIKE MORA
DIRECTIONS:
“The first time I encountered the tree with the swing on top of the hill was actually a happy accident. I parked at the Peña Adobe parking by the lake and took the gravel road up to the radio tower in the distance. Before arriving at the tower I took a left onto another trail when I saw the tree. When I arrived at the tree with the swing it did not disappoint, the view was majestic and I could not wait to bring my friends one day to what I had discovered. Sure enough, my friends and their kids loved it, the kids could not get enough of the swing.
ADVICE:
My advice is to arrive early to get some swings in as the sun rises, or sunset is also a sight to behold. Remember to take some hiking shoes or boots as prickly bushes are commonplace in summer. Overall, it is my favorite landmark of Vacaville and a great place to share with a loved one.”
@asmithpics @mike.mayhen
EXPERT: SANDRA ROSA - BELLA FORMA JEWELRY
“Sometimes there are a few special spots in your town that you just love to visit over and over and it never gets old. This lush lonely tree with the yellow wooden swing is special. I’ve nicknamed it Swing Tree Hill as it’s one of my break spots during my hill runs at the Lagoon, it reminds me of simple times and simple pleasures and I always feel like a kid again soaring into the sky.
DIRECTIONS:
Located in Lagoon Valley Park, once you pass the gate shack, follow the road in and park in the large parking lot on the right after the dog park. If you see a green park bench memorializing my dear friend Mike aka “Papa Mitt”, you are in the right place. Across the road you will see a large openspaced, tree-lined path leading up the hills, this is where the path starts. Just pass through the heavy metal gate. You will hike approximately 3/4 of a mile, and due to the moderate incline, it should take you about 20 minutes. The path is clear most days unless you encounter a cluster of cows. It is their territory so you will likely see them elsewhere if not on the path. The trail is kid and dog-friendly, but please keep your dog leashed at all times. You will be making a left off the trail when you see a wide opening and barbed wire fencing running all the way up the hillside. Once you make this left off the main trail, you will see a sign that directs you to Spreading Oak Spur. Keep going and the giant tree should be in sight. Enjoy the views and the shady refuge, and turn the yellow swing over to discover a special message written underneath.
ADVICE:
My recommendation is to avoid going in the middle of the day during the summer as the temperatures get really hot and the path is not shaded at all. It is a dusty trail and very likely your footwear will get dirty. Bring water, stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Going before noon or after 6pm are the best times. If you are visiting between December and April it could be very muddy if we’ve had a lot of rain, but generally, the ground is very dry and kids may want to wear long pants as the low brush near the tree may scratch their legs.”
THE BROWNS VALLEY SWING
LOCAL EXPERT: TRAVIS WILLIAMS
Do you know what I think is the best part of swinging? It’s that fraction of a second when you reach the top of your upswing, just before you come back to earth. It’s that moment of stillness where you can see your world from a slightly different perspective, and if you go high enough, get that tiny bit of weightlessness. You’re already treated to beautiful views of Vacaville from the hike you need to take to get here, but this swing can get you a little more up and over the city with Rio Vista’s windmills in the background. It might seem a little scary at first because of the downhill descent the ground takes in front of the swing but it adds so much to the feeling of being in the air that it’s easy to get over. With all that being said, this is one swing you need to try.
DIRECTIONS:
Most people use Wrenthram Drive to get there, then park along Vaca Valley Pkwy. You’ll be at the trailhead of the Browns Valley Hillcrest Boulder Loop (shout out to all my rock climbing friends!). Take the smaller dirt trail through the public fence and turn right. All that’s left is to follow the trail until you get to the swing.
ADVICE:
This is a moderately challenging hike (about 1 mile and quickly elevating) on an unpaved trail where farmers graze the namesake of the city: cows! (the town was actually named for founder Manuel Vaca, the word vaca means cow in Spanish, which makes “cowtown” a pretty irresistible nickname) So, I recommend hiking shoes and clothes and watch out for cow patties. Once you get there you’ll have access to a picnic table and a bench supplied by the Boy Scouts. For those that like to rock climb, continue up the path a little farther for some pretty epic boulders to climb.
LOCAL @bellaforma_jewelryVacaville sits on land that was granted to Juan Manuel Vaca and Juan Felipe Peña in 1843. Originally called Rancho Lihuaytos - the name of Putah Creek at that time - the land eventually came to be known as Rancho Los Putos. In 1850, Vaca sold one square league (about 9 square miles) of land to William McDaniel with the provision that one square mile (640 acres) would be used to create a township called Vacaville. The sale caused significant controversy, as Vaca did not speak, read, or write English and later claimed that William McDaniel had misled him into selling 9 miles instead of the 1 mile he had agreed to, and the attorney for McDaniel, who profited
from the sale of the land, acted as interpreter during the transaction. The land sale caused a rift between the Vaca and Peña families. Following the quarrel, Vaca sold his adobe to John Wesley Hill, prior to Vaca’s death in 1856. The Vaca adobe was destroyed during the Vacaville-Winters earthquake in 1892, but the Peña home has been carefully preserved thanks to the stewardship of the City of Vacaville and the Peña Adobe Historical Society. Visitors can tour the adobe and the accompanying Mowers-Goheen Museum, whose collection includes children’s toys from the Peña family, clothing from the turn of the century, and even a woolly mammoth bone.
Back in the Nut Tree’s heyday, Vacaville had quite a few celebrity visitors. Here are a few you might have heard of: President Ronald Reagan, President Richard Nixon, Queen Elizabeth II, Danny Kaye, Bozo the Clown, and Bing Crosby. Hankering for some throwback Nut Tree experiences? Explore the Nut Tree’s history on page 53.
FAMOUS FOOTBALLERS
When you think football, Vacaville may not be the first city that comes to mind, but many previous residents became professional football players! Jarret Bush played at Will C. Wood High School and became a cornerback for the Green Bay Packers. Other players include Vince Newsome (NFL player for Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens), Xzavie Jackson (ex-defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals), Josh Kaddu (linebacker for the Miami Dolphins) and Kyle DeVan (offensive guard for the Tennessee Titans).
Other famous athletes from Vacaville include Andy Bloom (Olympic shot putter, NCAA champion in the shot put and discus), Dennis Alexio (kickboxer, eight-time world champion), Jermaine Dye (Major League Baseball player; 2005 World Series MVP with the Chicago White Sox), and Stefan Janoski (skateboarder).
Rooted in Nature
California’s most renowned botanist, Willis Jepson, was raised in Vacaville. In 1892, at the age of 25, Jepson co-founded the Sierra Club with John Muir. He went on to have a career as a botany professor, a botanical writer, and a conservationist. Willis Jepson Middle School in Vacaville is named for him, and you can spot a big, metallic bunch of flowers and fronds on Leisure Town Road near Orange Drive that pays tribute to Vacaville’s favorite botanist.
Vacaville is home to Icon Aircraft, an aviation game-changer, and manufacturer of the world’s first light-sport aircraft. The ICON A-5 is an amphibious sport-plane that can fold up to be towed behind a vehicle. Coupled with the Nut Tree Airport and the Rowland Freedom Center, aviation is an intrinsic part of Vacaville’s past, present, and future!
An Aviation IconA longtime favorite roadstop for aviators and road-weary travelers in need of a break and a bite to eat, the Nut Tree has grown and changed dramatically from it’s humble beginnings as a roadside fruit stand. Explore the history of California’s Legendary Roadstop and the modern day attractions you’ll find during your visit!
Harbison House is the family home around which Nut Tree grew. Luther and Hester Harbison built the home in 1907. Their youngest daughter, Helen Harbison, married Ed “Bunny” Power on the porch in 1921, and opened the fruit stand they named Nut Tree in the same year. Harbison House stands today as one of the last architectural elements of the former Nut Tree.
Nut Tree made quite an impression. For almost 75 years it stood as a vibrant stop along Highway 40. The Nut Tree showcased the fresh flavors of California’s harvests, the energy of California’s people and the diversity of California’s experiences. It was fun, it was food, it was shopping, it was private aviation, it was entertainment. In the words of Alan Temco of the San Francisco Chronicle it was “an oasis of good taste.”
After 75 years in business, the original Nut Tree closed its doors in 1996. In 2006, the Nut Tree re-opened under new management with a bold new look, a unique mix of popular retail stores, restaurants and services, as well as beloved and newly renovated Nut Tree Plaza, featuring the Nut Tree Train, carousel and other elements of the original Nut Tree. Today a visit to the Nut Tree is sure to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for the whole family.
On July 3, 1921 The Nut Tree is born! As a last resort in a terrible crop year, Helen & Ed “Bunny” Power set up a small fruit stand on the side of the road under the walnut tree Helen’s grandfather had planted and sold fruit to passers-by.
By its second year, the Nut Tree had begun offering prepared food, serving an average of 950 cars per day!
The flower shop and a gift shop opened in the main building of the Nut Tree.
Nut Tree Restaurant was serving 1,000 meals a day, and had acquired a national reputation for its cuisine, which combined “comfort food” with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Credited as the pioneer of “Farm-to-Fork” cuisine.
Due to its free pineapple appetizer, the Nut Tree grew to be the 3rd largest importer of pineapples from Hawaii.
The Nut Tree retail store was opened. Nut Tree Airport recorded 25k fly-in passengers.
Coffee Tree opened to accommodate customers looking for a faster meal off the newly built I-80.
Nut Tree opens a toy store and railroad.
Grand opening of the Nut Tree Plaza.
Nut Tree celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Its 500 employees dedicated the founders’ tree to Bunny and Helen Power.
Don Birrell was hired as Design Director, and his vision and ideas would shape the look of Nut Tree from then on.
Nut Tree Airport was opened, as a way to attract pilots to the already popular road-stop.
Richard Nixon visited during a campaign stop. The 72 foot high Nut Tree Tower sign was installed. Each of the handcrafted panels weighs 12 tons.
The first annual “Great Scarecrow Contest.”
Unable to compete in the fast paced, consumer and technology driven 1990’s, Nut Tree closed its doors, ending an era rich in atmosphere and innovation. Nut Tree re-opened as a mixed use development, nodding to its past with historical elements while reaching into the future with new shopping and restaurants.
Catered the luncheon given by Governor Deukmejian for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at the State Capitol.
Celebrating 100 years, Nut Tree continues to grow, offering timeless moments to a whole new generation of visitors.
