LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Where to stay is one of the top questions visitors ask when looking to vacation in Indian River County. It can be tough to choose, especially if you’ve never visited. Each city has its own unique flavor. If you’re a beach lover, you’ll definitely want to consider Vero Beach, a place where sunrises dominate and local mom and pop restaurants and boutiques welcome travelers. Maybe you prefer an intimate, walkable riverfront town with easy access to the Indian River Lagoon. A sail-worthy river teaming with local fish and a variety of plant and animal life that is hard to find anywhere else in the Sunshine State. Or, would you be happier in the natural Florida of rural Fellsmere? This is a place where thousands upon thousands of undeveloped acres exist and osprey nests outnumber people. Paddle through a grand forest of blue cypress trees and encounter bass fishermen who understand preservation is the key to productive fishing grounds. Indian River County is a distinct destination dotted with thriving boutiques, hotels and rare, independent family-owned properties. While chain hotels are also part of the mix. The area offers 30+ overnight accommodations for all budgets and tastes, and a variety of Airbnb stays, too. We totally understand why this is one of our most popular questions, so we’ve developed a list of places you’ll want to stay.

WHERE BROWN PELICANS RULE Magnificent brown pelicans dotting the Florida coast almost didn’t survive the “feather fashion craze” prevalent during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. In fact, Roosevelt declared Pelican Island National Refuge the country’s first wildlife refuge. Located along A1A, this historic refuge is surrounded by a 5,445-acre nature preserve about three miles north of the Wabasso Bridge in Vero Beach. Canoers and kayakers can access the area via Indian River Lagoon and should watch for manatees and endangered sea turtles, which frequent the refuge. Green, Hawksbill, and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are an extraordinary sight. Additionally, guests to this serene sanctuary can hike, bank fish, or fish by boat. Recreational shellfish harvesting is permitted in Sebastian within the open waters of the Indian River Lagoon. The refuge is supported by the Pelican Island Audubon Society, and birding aficionados should be on the lookout for more than 30 different bird species. It is a rookery, roost, feeding ground, and loafing area.
GREEN ACRES Green seekers will not want to miss the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area, a joint project between the citizens and government of Vero Beach in conjunction with the St. Johns River Water Management District and Indian River County. Visitors to the area will enjoy the Herb Kale Trail, named for a leading Florida ornithologist. This trail is vital and known for migrating songbirds such as the American redstart and gray catbird, which flourish in the hardwood hammocks and scrubby pine flatwoods. Kayak and canoe the mangrove forests and beyond to spot royal terns feeding, loafing, and nesting on the unspoiled islands and sandbars of Indian River Lagoon. Or catch a glimpse of tricolored herons, spotted sandpipers, and blue-winged teal from the trail, observation platform, or elevated tower.
A MODERN-DAY MIRACLE Some call the Vero Beach West Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility Wetlands a modernday miracle. The simple, eco-friendly technique of
“washing wastewater” inspires a pristine, birdfriendly environment. Cattails and bulrush remove excess nutrients like phosphates and nitrates to prevent harmful downstream algae blooms that clog and obstruct native aquatic life. Today, the facility is a birder’s dream nestled in a man-made wetland complete with a boardwalk, covered pavilion, and observation tower. The marsh is an active birding site with spring and summer easily attracting more than 170 documented birds.
A SUNRISE BEYOND THE BEACH Orchid Island in Vero Beach houses one of the largest remaining maritime hammocks, Captain Forster Hammock Preserve. The preserve is open from sunrise until sunset with guided and selfguided tours. Forster’s Hammock Trail, a primitive foot trail, leads to two small seasonal ponds. There are a few short trail loops branching off the main path; one to note is Warbler’s Walk. The area offers a slice of natural Florida that is hard to find nowadays. Each spring and fall, the songbird migration is an epic event when bird enthusiasts can view auch species as Black and White Warblers , Blue-headed Vireo, Ovenbird, Scarlet Tanager, and many more
A DIVER’S PARADISE There aren’t many places in the world where active dive sites still exist. A few hundred feet from the shores of the Atlantic coast in Vero Beach lies a “diver’s paradise.” Sunken treasures and a real-world shipwreck, the SS Breconshire, provides a thriving habitat for coral and while the artificial reefs make the perfect place for fish to hide and slumber .

THE REEFS There are four artificial reefs along the beaches, approximately 200-300 feet offshore. The first reef was deployed in 1987 by FP&L and is located along the southern shores of Vero Beach at a depth of 38 feet. The remaining three reefs, placed in 1999 by Indian River County government, are situated at depths of 66, 71, and 73 feet along Vero Beach’s oceanfront.

THE CORAL Divers and snorkelers take note, this area is a nursery for all types of marine life - turtles, lobsters, manatees, rays, sharks, and 200+ species of fish. Plus, the ivory, tree-like coral Oculina Variscosa and Oculina Diffusia are an incredible sight to behold. The ivory brush coral, a species of concern, begin near Sebastian Inlet and run unbroken to Riomar, south of Sexton Plaza. These viable coral reefs are viewable at low tide.
UNTOLD TREASURE This magical underwater world is known for shipwrecks, subsequently the designation of Florida’s “Treasure Coast.” A sunken fleet of 11 Spanish ships left millions in undiscovered gold, and today travelers from around the world come to seek their fortune. Imagine kayaking through a lake where old cypress trees reign and more than 200 osprey nests can be seen during nesting season? Maybe your morning routine includes a workout, start the day with a glorious bike ride, or paddle the lagoon, lakes or the Atlantic ocean in and around Vero Beach, Fellsmere, and Sebastian. SUN. SURF. SAVOR. Beaches, the natural cure. What is it about beach vacations that quickly relaxes us? Is it because we’re at ease, connecting with things we love like family, friends, a good book, fresh food, floating in the water for hours, or learning something new? Or does our happiness stem from something deeper? Color therapists believe blue produces security and relaxation — is that why so many of us are drawn to the ocean? And spa experts continually tout the virtues of salt baths and salt scrubs to rid a body of toxins. Do the salty ocean waters deliver on this promise as well? What if the connection between being at the beach and happiness is interrelated to how they make you feel? We at Vero Beach offer untold encounters in and nearby water. This beach is serene and is sure to bring joy.
MAKING A FAMILY CONNECTION Humiston Park Beach, north of Sexton Plaza on Ocean Drive, may be a smart choice for those who wish to bond with friends and family as it’s been rated a top family beach by Family Vacation Critic. Beyond the gorgeous beaches and connecting with family and friends, why not also ignite your five senses? Every Saturday morning from 8 am–noon, beachgoers can walk on over to the farmer’s market to enjoy the sights
and sounds of a bountiful market where colorful fresh fruit and plum vegetables wait to be purchased. Visitors will also be entertained as the many farmers proudly showcase their offerings and answer all your questions. A deep satisfaction comes from knowing where your food was grown, and this is a fabulous time to teach children about healthy eating.

A BLUE WATER DELIGHT Round Island off of A1A is a “blue water delight.” This beach has access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon and is the perfect place to watch manatees and dolphins at play. It’s also a place to spot egrets and pelicans, hike a trail, or be a kid again and climb the lookout tower, taking in 360° panoramic views of the area. If you didn’t bring a kayak or canoe, no worries as equipment rentals are available for delivery.
MAKING THE CONNECTION Google Ocean Drive and Mango Lane to arrive at Jaycee Beach and spend a pleasant day reconnecting with family. This park is an active family beach and boasts the longest boardwalk in Vero Beach — great for a leisurely walk with the little ones. If your kids get hungry, just walk a few steps to the Seaside Grill, which serves traditional American fare. There’s something on the menu for everyone. Ample parking is available, too. A fun way to connect with the entire family.
SLOW YOUR ROLL LIKE A SEA TURTLE We basically run through life like the proverbial chicken with our heads cut off. Shouldn’t vacations be the opposite? Why not slow your roll with an unforgettable summer experience at Sebastian Inlet State Park, 9700 South Highway A1A? During the height of summer, in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, mighty sea turtles make their annual trek to the beach to lay their eggs. These prehistoric sea creatures have been making this yearly trek for 100 million years. Visitors and locals will witness a breathtaking site as the park’s rangers host nighttime tours to observe nesting sea turtles; reservations are required. Come prepared to roam the beach for at least a few hours to spot these fascinating, endangered creatures. These tours are best suited for children 10+.
LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WITH A FASTER PACE? Then wax your board as the inlet is renowned as a surfer’s paradise. In fact, world champion surfer Kelly Slater got his start here, plus surf competitions are always fun to watch. Beyond the surf breaks, the park is filled with eager fishermen who come to enjoy either the Atlantic or the Indian River as fishing jetties

extend from both sides of the inlet into the ocean. Other popular activities include swimming, camping, bird watching, boating, and diving. Both locals and visitors can be seen observing ospreys and a variety of shorebirds who call this environmentally-friendly beach home. It’s a magical place in the area’s beach line-up.
NATURE’S MEDICINE Mingled amongst sea grapes and sea grasses, if you look closely, you may be lucky enough to spot the highly endangered, adorable beach mouse. Treasure Shores Beach gets its name from the area’s association with sunken treasure, plus this beach provides a climbable pirate ship for kiddies. Walking trails are available at this unguarded beach.
A DAY INSPIRED BY BEACHES, DISCOVERY, AND GOLD A day of discovery awaits at Wabasso Beach, 11300 North A1A, as this beach is a few swim strokes away from one of the world’s most famous sunken treasures, the Queen’s Jewels. One of Florida’s rarest reefs leads to a Spanish shipwreck the, SS Breconshire, which found a new, unplanned home off the shores of Vero Beach some 100 years ago. In 2015, 350 gold coins valued at $4.5 million were found six feet off the beach shore. Treasure hunt anyone? Surfers also find this beach to be rich in surf breaks as either side of the jetty offers exceptional reef breaks.
PLAN A WELLBEING WEEKEND Solitude, serenity, and miles of shoreline littered with seashells are what you’ll find at Tracking Station Park, 800 46th Place North A1A. Horseshoe crabs show you how to dance and sea turtles can be spotted having fun rolling in the waves. Or catch a sunrise and then watch the seas sparkle as the glistening rays rise into the morning sky. This is one of the most photographed
beaches in Vero Beach and one of the locals best kept seaside secrets. You may need more than a weekend to get the full benefit of this hidden natural retreat.
FIND YOUR BLISS ON OUR LAKES & LAGOONS We would be remiss not to mention one of the state’s most glorious lakes, Blue Cypress Lake in pastoral Fellsmere. This magnificent lake is approximately seven miles long and three miles wide with 21 miles of shoreline surrounded by 29,000 acres of marshes, swamps and cypress forests. It’s a place of complete surrender to Mother Nature as blue skies give way to bluehued water, which some say occurs because of the reflection of the blue cypress trees on the lake as the morning sun rises into the sky. The lake is home to the largest osprey nesting sight and blue cypress forests. Spend a magical morning paddling through the cypress trees and look up to spot ginormous osprey nests and a plethora of additional winged creatures; bald eagles, egrets, great blue herons, owls, storks, and hawks. It’s nature at her finest. The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse lagoons in the world. It inhabits Sebastian and Vero Beach and is an aquatic wonderland. Nature lovers travel far and wide to explore more than 3,000 species of plants and animals along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Manatees, dolphins, turtle nesting spots, small stingrays, hundreds of fish, and 300 bird species are located in and around the lagoon. It’s a glorious Eden.

adventure is not for the faint of heart. This 22,000-acre park offers 60 miles of hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and equestrian trails. Pack the binoculars as the preserve is a part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, a top birding spot on the East Coast. Keep the binoculars handy as endangered species like manatees, scrub jays, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and bobcats (to name a few) can be spotted in the area throughout the year. Camping is available.
BEACHSIDE TREASURE SEEKERS Skip the kitschy retail stores and instead opt for a day of beachside treasure hunting with a metal detector. Since you are visiting one of the most treasure-filled areas in the USA, the Treasure Coast, you may be more likely to discover a gold Spanish doubloon. Even if you don’t find a
rare gold coin, maybe you’ll stumble on a piece of jewelry or any number of exciting valuables. If you don’t have a metal detector, the Mel Fisher Museum offers rentals.
LIGHTS OUT The park rangers at Sebastian Inlet State Park offer a unique nighttime program to witness one of the most magical moments in Mother Nature endangered sea turtles (Green, Loggerhead, and others) laying their eggs, covering their nests, and making their journey back to the sea. Programs are offered in June and July. They start at 9PM and may go until the wee hours of the morning. Remember, turtles aren’t on a schedule, which means you may have to walk a mile or two to spot one of these prehistoric creatures. Bring bug spray, water, and supportive shoes. Kids under seven probably won’t ‘dig’ this outing.
REWARDING, HUMBLING AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING Fellsmere hosts Florida Tech Challenge Courses, such as Tarzan, Field Leadership, and more are conducted on an 80-acre wilderness preserve in Fellsmere, Florida, a rural wonderland. Youth groups, father and sons, mother and daughters, couples and business team-building alike will
find these eco-adventures courses affirming while also developing skills that will last a lifetime.
AIRBOAT ADVENTURES Imagine a day speeding across the water at 130 miles an hour as your airboat traverses Blue Cypress Lake. This is a fantastic journey into protected marshes and wetlands with majestic Blue Cypress trees that house ospreys, hawks, and bald eagles. Be on the lookout as Florida alligators play hide-n-seek amongst the nutrient-rich seaweed and colorful lily pad laden waters.
SNORKEL A SHIPWRECK A short swim from the shore lies a reef structure unlike
any other in Florida, a shipwreck that settled in 15 - 20 feet of water, off the coast of Vero Beach. Parents and children alike can snorkel the SS Breconshire shipwreck where you can plainly identify boilers that powered engines and clearly see the shape of the bow, which is surrounded by rich sea life. Snorkelers may spot lobsters, stingrays, and jewel-tones tropical fish. And, if you’re lucky enough, you may even observe an endangered loggerhead sea turtle.
RIVALING THE EVERGLADES The undeveloped backcountry waters of Blue Cypress Lake covers 6,599 acres, rivaling the Everglades. Kayakers may want to paddle the west side of the lake to experience a forest of moss-laden Blue Cypress trees that are both eerie and captivating. This forest extends into the water, so paddlers will actually row through the trees, which some years have more than 300 osprey nests! The lake is known as the largest Osprey nesting site in the state. Blue Cypress Lake also attracts a variety of wading birds including great blue heron and limpkin, along with an alligator or two.

the walkable riverfront town of Sebastian. The second week of March has shrimp lovers and craft beer enthusiastic marking their calendar for the annual Shrimpfest & Craft Brew, Hullabaloo. Not a fan of shrimp, no worries as plenty of traditional food is available as is local music, and festival festivities, making this event a top bucketlist contender. This three-day shrimp-lovers fest supports youth sports in Indian River County The Sebastian Clam Bake. Fourteen years ago, The Sebastian Clam Bake, a nonprofit organization launched a festival that would deeply impact the local community. Today the organization has raised more than sixhundred thousand dollars with monies being distributed to local non-profit organizations impacting residents in ways that positively affect their daily lives. The organizers believe that exceptional food, soul-stirring music, historical re-enactments and plenty of family fun make this a festival an easy way to give back. Destructive and tasty, these words are often followed by Lionfish, a devasting, invasive fish which isn’t native to the Atlantic Ocean, and waters of the Caribbean and Gulf. These fish are predators and eat more than 50 different species of fish and invertebrates, triggering extinctions and severely altering ocean habitats. Help reduce Lionfish populations and mark your calendar, for the 4th annual Sebastian Lionfish Festival. Spend a delicious day eating the enemy. Once the chef removes the spine the Lionfish is safe to handle and ready to cook. Be prepared to enjoy this mild tasting fish in a variety of different ways; fried, grilled in a taco and broiled. The event takes place at Capt Hiram’s, in Sebastian during the third week in June. Enjoy eating the enemy and feeling good about it as proceeds from this event benefit Coastal Connections Inc., an educational organization that protects coastal habitats.

A DOUBLOON’IN GOOD TIME If you don’t already know there is a boatload, pun intended, of golden treasures off the coast of Vero Beach.
